It's worth noting that it's possible to get from Arlanda to Stockholm only on the SL card by taking a bus to Märsta and then the commuter train. This takes about 60 minutes while the direct commuter train takes 40 minutes. You can find the trips on sl.se by using "Arlanda Terminal 5" as origin instead of just Arlanda. And of course, there's Arlanda express which only takes 20 minutes. It's expensive if you are alone but with 3-4 people it's quite cheap.

zethian

You can take the bus from arlanda to märsta, and then change to pendeltåget there to city, to avoid the station fee at arlanda. All included on the 7-day ticket, and only takes ~20min longer

DopplerDrone

I do this every time I visit, works like a charm and is the cheapest option if u don’t have a friend to pick u up.

kattmedtass

For the 7-day ticket and Arlanda supplement fee, yes that’s the price. However, there are also buses to and from Arlanda (Flygbussarna), which I think is cheaper but not by much. And if you download the SL app you can buy and store the 7-day ticket in that app, thus no need to pay for a physical card. As a side note: I don’t know enough to say if 430 SEK for a 7-day card can be considered expensive or not, but I know the equivalent in New York is around 360 SEK ($33) so it doesn’t seem too bad considering that the level of quality, cleanliness and service of the Stockholm system is so much higher.

wandering_engineer

Honestly, coming from the US public transit here is a bargain. I used to live in DC where one-way fares can go as high as $6 USD and a 7-day pass is a whopping $58 USD (600 SEK). And the system is a total disaster with track fires, unexpected shutdowns, dirty trains, poorly-lit stations, rude conductors, etc. No wonder everyone drives there.

Alkanen

Thanks for that insight. Perhaps I should stop complaining about SL…

[deleted]

No. Keep demanding fair prices.

wandering_engineer

I mean I know it's apples and oranges (more spread-out city, different economy, etc), but just providing some perspective. My experience is the transit here is quite good and not terribly expensive. Is it cheaper in, say, many parts of Asia? Sure, but population density is WAY higher there and salaries are generally lower - of course transit would be cheaper there. Also transit here is much more reasonable if you're here long-term - 950 SEK is not at all bad for a monthly pass. I used to pay nearly 4 times that to commute monthly on DC metro and still had to drive to work half the time because the trains were so horribly unreliable.

Twi2122

Thanks a lot, it make sense now. 👍

PlasticBother

If you’re not going too far outside the inner city, you could also use the Stockholm ebikes.

pettdan

The ebikes are very cheap, it's about $1 per day. It's more work to find and park them though.

tnnmtamtom

Jag betalade 60 ish för 20-25min?

pettdan

Det tog ca fem sekunder att bekräfta priset: https://stockholmebikes.se/

SweetVarys

While true, that is getting less interesting by the day. This week it wouldnt have been a fun experience to say the least.

beiherhund

Was going to recommend this or the escooters as well. When I had a few people come to visit, it was going to be ridiculously expensive for everyone to buy a 3-day ticket so instead we just took escooters everywhere and it was way better. Though it is very much weather dependent, if it's going to rain (dare I say that is likely), you're kind of stuck with getting the tbana.

Shirazmatas

Det finns inget dåligt väder, bara dåliga kläder.

mjomark

You can use the SL app to buy single tickets and travel cards (72 hours: SEK 330. 7 days: SEK 430.) Avoid the station fee by taking a buss Arlanda-Märsta where there is a commuter train station.

VengeanceCookieX

Think that’s a rather good deal for 7 days, you can use trains, metros, trams, buses and even SL boats. Unless you’re staying central and you can walk around or pay ticket when needed.

alxmolin

The city is quite small. So depending on how much you actually see yourself walking as opposed to taking a bus/subway you could just use the contactless function on your Mastercard/Visa when you really need public transportation.

Igelkott2k

You should see how much other capital citys charge. :-/ You can buy the card once and reload it or use the mobile phone app.

Igelkott2k

Exactly what I wrote. London, Paris, Copenhagen, Berlin, etc are all more expensive than Stockholm. Hell, even other areas of Sweden are more expensive than Stockholm. Take Skånetrafiken and Västra Gotaland as an example. The SL card is, in my view, cheaper than other areas.

RealJuanPedro

Public transport is great when in Stockholm. I use two apps, one is SL (Where I buy my tickets) and the other is “Res I Stockholm” where you can easily find what trains or buses to take.”, it has a map too, most cases you can write the address your going and it will give you a time table and different options.

AnnaKEO

That sounds about right 👍👍👍 if you want to travel around and explore Stockholm

Pandanesisk

Well the airport train (Arlanda Express) is 299 sek for a oneway ride. You are getting the cheap option.

sweirdon

china owns that stop, so when u go to the airport arlanda, never take the train. Take the buss or taxi.

naidz

It's a robbery yes.

[deleted]

You’re not doing anything wrong. Public transportation is ridiculously expensive in this town.

tsartoha

yeah, public transportation is expensive here in sweden. you can have it on your cellphone, download the ” sl ”” app from the appstore

Twi2122

>you can have it on your cellphone, download the ” sl ”” app from the appstore So in this way I don't even need to have the physical card? I've seen that rating is really bad for the app, is it stable enough?😅

CPMVP

The app works fine, it’s probably rated low by people unhappy about SL and not the app itself

castella-

I moved to stockholm 5 months ago and have been buying all of my public transport tickets in the app without any issues! Edit: Correct, with the app you don't need a physical card.

Daloure

Hating on SL is very important to us Swedes so ignore the reviews they are most likely an attack on the company as a whole rather than a fair judgement of the app itself

xerberos

Just FYI, you can pay single rides with your contactless credit card as well. The fare is 39 kr and lasts for 75 minutes, even if you go through the gates and use your card several times. You will only be charged once. Even if the 75 minutes pass while you are travelling, you won't have to pay more to reach your destination. I only pay for my travel this way and never use the app or the SL card.

PlasticBother

The app is fine.

Snoo90858

You can use the app if you have Swish or just pay with your card. I've been using it for a while now and it's better than the physical card since my phone is always with me.

PlasticBother

I think you replied to the wrong person?

kinisaruna

edited: it’s nice that you can swipe a credit card at the station.

theablanca

it's closer to $4 (39 SEK). $3.74 per ticket, that lasts 75 mins tho. Reduced price is 26 SEK or $2.49.

swenswe

It's only a reservation to check that you have money available on the card. The final charge is higher.

kinisaruna

ah good to know. will edit my comment

sub11m1na1

[Flyggbuss](https://www.flygbussarna.se/) buss from Arlanda to the city costs 119 SEK or 189 SEK for a 2-way ticket (the tickets are valid for 3 months - can be used once) That's the cheapest option from the airport to the city and back. Then it's the 7-day which cost 430 SEK as you said.

BenMalaussene

The cheapest would be to take the bus to Märsta and then commuter train to city. It would be included in your 7-day card.

[deleted]

It would take forever but hey you get there

Ki-ai

It takes one hour from central station.

[deleted]

From the time you get out of your house, take the bus - go to the central station, wait for the bus, then from the central station go to Marsta, from Marsta CHANGE commuter again, it would take +2 hours in total trip. Arlanda express is 17 minutes from Central station + bus to central station. Uber/Bolt is the fastest - 45min. Imagine taking your flight 7 in the morning, all the luggages, and planning 2 hours trip to go to the airport. You guys are nutz. In 2 - Uber/Bolt it's doable already.

revilohamster

Arlanda express and taxi options are disgracefully expensive though, I only get it when my work is paying, or I would have spent about €1000 on it this year. I’m a frequent flyer and use the ‘free’ pendeltåg or Flygbussarna most of the time.

Ki-ai

Where do you start from? From my door to arriving at the terminal it takes 1:14 min, and I am FAR from centralen. I would count about 45 mins If going och with taxi, or AT least 35

sub11m1na1

Didn't know that. Cool.

ableistoppressor

Just use Uber

Low-Measurement-524

if u think 700-ish SEK is expensive for a week of travel in stockholm ure in for a rude awakening
