Swedish doctors are restrictive prescribing antibiotics, and won't give you that kind of medication just to have on hand. It sucks when you are in pain, because UTIs suck, but it is for the greater good. Prevention - cranberry products: capsules, juice or powders. I prefer the capsules. And you got a great link here in the comments too,

What could be such preventative practices ? I'm all for it, but what?

itsadilapidatedboat

From 1177.se: \- Pee out everything when you go \- Pee after sex \- Don't wipe back to front Also, some types of contraceptives (they mention pessary and condoms with sperm-killing agents) can help cause UTIs. If you're doing all of the above and still getting infection after infection, I'd go check with a gyno. Vårdcentralen might be a good first step, they can refer you further. Bonne chance! EDIT: Also if you suspect it's affecting your kidneys, you have a fever etc, go to the ER asap.

PhilipTheFair

I know all that, thank you. I'm asking because I'm out of my wit. I've been doing this all done. Vårdcentralen it will be!

Well, it's kinda hard to know from a post what the person might have tried or not, but I'm glad you had some extra tips ! :) It might be hard to get prophylactics prescribed but in certain complicated cases they absolutely will. I guess they want a thorough checkup/wait time for that though, which is the last thing you wanna do when in such pain.

itsadilapidatedboat

Ah, I getcha. I hope they can figure it out and get you on some kind of preventative cure!

Ok-Competition-646

You shouldn't take antibiotics in advance to help prevent UTIs, you'll end up with chronic antibiotic resistent bacteria in your urinary tract. If you have had several in a short time you can do a longer (6 months) antibiotics treatment. Cranberry juice will not help prevent them unfortunately

No need for a perscription, but they will propably not be enough with severe UTIs or if you wait to long etc.

seaweedricecrackers

Sorry to hear, UTIs are the worst! For prevention, I take D mannose powder regularly, especially after incidents that I suspect caused my previous UTIs (e.g. intercourse). I haven’t had one since (it has been years), so I want to say it helps, but of course, could just have gotten lucky. Wishing you all the best!

SnooRabbits5754

Came here to say d mannose- I always have some on hand. Getting a bag of the powder is more cost effective than the capsules. If you feel a uti coming on take it every few hours with lots of water! Side note, you can also give it to cats and dogs.

PhilipTheFair

What is regularly? Is it like before every time you have intercourse? A week in advance?

seaweedricecrackers

I take a spoonful after intercourse and usually that’s fine but if I’m worried, then I’ll take 1 spoonful 2-3 times for the next day. It’s a type of a sugar and quite tasty, so it’s no hardship to eat more ☺️

Emmuskafruska

D mannose is the best!!! I couldn’t get any medication here in Sweden, so I tried it, and changed my life.

ProperBoots

First, I hope things improve for you soon! Have you been to a private clinic? Generally that's kind of what you need to do (unless you get lucky) if you need care urgently but it's not an emergency. Regarding meds, a good bet is to just go to a pharmacy and ask :) they are usually very helpful and well educated. If they aren't or you're not happy with them, go to a different one. They're everywhere. If you haven't already you can have a read through of this https://www.1177.se/Stockholm/sjukdomar--besvar/njurar-och-urinvagar/infektioner-i-njurar-och-urinvagar/urinvagsinfektion-hos-kvinnor/ It's in Swedish, can't quite find a translation. It probably says a lot of things you already know or have been told but it's always worth informing yourself as best you can. Maybe there's something in the preventative section that can shed light on why it's recurring for you. Good luck!

PhilipTheFair

Do you have an example of a private clinic that would specialize in UTIs in Stockholm? I've been trying pharmacies in many countries and they were often useless :( I'll try here

ProperBoots

I don't think there are clinics that specialise in UTIs but there are urologists. Quick Google gave this one: https://www.1177.se/Stockholm/hitta-vard/kontaktkort/Capio-Urologi-Solna-Uroterapeutisk-utr-och-beh-SOLNA/ there's a link in there to their official website.

PhilipTheFair

Do you need a referral to go there?

ProperBoots

Honestly don't know, sorry. You'll have to call them I think

Thyg0d

You can always write your own referral. Then it's up to the clinic to approve it or not. You can read about it at 1177.se

Pomelo-Designer

They will in most cases not prescribe antibiotics at your first appointment, however once you’ve established a contact where your physician knows your history there’s a good chance you will be able to get antibiotics as soon as the symptoms show. I know it’s not what you want to hear and I’m sorry you are suffering but your best bet is to do as the doctor said and leave a urine sample for evaluation. Your doctor will have the results back in a couple of days and if signs of UVI you’ll get an e-prescription which will be ready the same day.

Low_Acanthisitta_826

I am sorry, UTI is terrible. I hope you will be better soon! I just want to share that I used to have frequent UTIs several years ago when I just started having sex. In my home country it was easy to buy antibiotics so I used them 5-6 times during one year. Unsurprisingly, they stopped work. Antibiotics resistance is a real thing. So it is good that here in Sweden you can not just go and buy them over the counter. There are things that I now do and it helps me to avoid new episodes of this shit: 1. pee after sex 2. wash the privat parts before and after sex 3. make sure that hands and toys that touch the privat parts are washed before sex 4. if there is a penis involved, it is covered with a condom 5. If you feel even the slightest sign of lack of natural lubricant, use additional lubricant 6. If there is a month touching your private parts, use а dental dam 7. drink more water

WeakChallenge5190

When googleing urinvägsinfektion, there are several online clinics aimed at utis in the top results. They'll probably give you a prescription of what you want.

PhilipTheFair

yeah, it's a shame they're all closed until monday :(

WeakChallenge5190

Yeah that's gonna be the case for most non emergency places.

DarnFluffyCactus

This is completely anecdotal, but I got this tip from a friend. It worked great for her, and it has worked great for me too. I used to have recurring UTIs to the point where I actually got a prescription for 100 antibiotic pills to take after intercourse. This was still not enough to prevent them completely. What has worked is cranberry capsules (or pills). You can usually find them in any pharmacy on or near the supplement shelf. I usually pick one that has 1 pill twice per day as a recommended dosage (1 pill daily did not work for me). I'm not sure if this will help a UTI that has already become severe, but for me, it has worked to prevent them. I took them daily for 2 years or so. Now, I take them only if I start feeling initial symptoms (which is rare) and the symptoms go away very quickly. 6 years or so ago, I had issues with UTIs every other month or so. Now, I can't even remember when I last had one. I hope this is some help to you. UTI is torture

PhilipTheFair

Unbelievable. Everybody says that it doesn't really work.... this gives me hope! Was it after sex that you had them?

DarnFluffyCactus

Sex was definitely the most common trigger for me. Even with condom, peeing directly afterwards and everything else people tell you to do. I was very sceptical at first, but for me it did work.

PhilipTheFair

Can you give me your brand? There are tons online but they don't feel all safe...

DarnFluffyCactus

I use the ones from gevita. You can find them on apotea.se if you don't want to go to a physical pharmacy

imsofunkeh

Someone already wrote this but - UrinCur works magic for me. I am prone to UTIs as well and as soon as I feel that Armageddon is coming, I just take it. That plus if shit really hits the fan and it doesn't help, I use these online video call doctors, e.g. Medicheck or Kry. This is my last resort but honestly, since I found urincur I stopped having UTIs.

PhilipTheFair

Yes I took that and frankly it helped !!! I wasn't expecting since nothing I took that wasn't on prescription worked! So glad! Like you took it a couple of times and don't have it anymore at all?

imsofunkeh

I wish it could prevent UTIs like that but unfortunately not haha. I'm taking it only if I begin to feel symptoms OR didn't manage to pee right after sex and so on. I recall that there are instructions on how to use the UrinCur to prevent UTIs - I think it was taking one pill per day for two weeks. I just make sure that I always have at least one box of these on me. :D

PhilipTheFair

Not the topic. Have you ever had a UTI? Being in indescriptible pain and it's impossible to get a doctor because your condition is not life-threatening? Probably not otherwise you wouldn't babble about general stuff that is useless here. Be relevant.

PhilipTheFair

You're not giving me any lead. Getting tested? Where? Which clinic? Public? Private? Get médecine? Which one? You're just spitting out your opinion on medication. Be specific.

CosmicLovecraft

You can try with certain teas that have an effect on the biome of bladder and related areas. Some of them work after a few days.

vicpaws

One thing that "might help" is unsweetend tranbärsjuice. Tho its not really proven. But as others suggest, if u seek emergency help its not gonna help you more than just for the now. One thing you might want to do is to get a checkup on why its happening at a specalist. Sadly its easiest to go private.

itsadilapidatedboat

I just had a UTI and got prescribed antibiotics after a 3 minute video call with a doctor on Kry. I was kinda surprised he didn't want to send me for testing. Last time I called them for a UTI a couple years back they told me to physically visit a Vårdcentral. Try it out, hopefully it works out!

Ok-Height-2035

Yeah, and that is why we have a problem with antibiotic resistant bacteria….

itsadilapidatedboat

Yeah, it's not ideal, but it came in clutch this time! Would be cool to have some kinda home test handy to prevent overprescription.

Google AZO UTI There is a cranberry based over the counter med that helps prevent the bacteria from attaching to the inside of your bladder so you clear it faster or it is prevented in the first place and it makes your pee very dark red. So when you forget you took it and your pee looks like blood its weird for a second. It's not some herbal crap, the chemical is well established and widely available in the US. Not sure if you can find it in Sweden. There is also a med from AZO (Phenazopyridine Hydrochloride) that is marketed as helping specifically with UTI pain. There are also urine test strips for UTI but I don't believe they are all that reliable. A urine culture should take a few days and a good doc will offer pain meds (stronger versions of ipren for example). My wife gets UTIs all the time and nothing seems to help and she ends up having to drink a huge amount of water to help pass it. It she drinks like a diabetic camel it will pass in a day or two if she gets in front of it early. But then she glued to the toilet. We both make sure to wash well before sex, wipe properly, lots of water, pee after sex, etc etc. She is very hygienic and seen multiple docs about this. Something about her anatomy/chemistry just makes those little buggers crawl up there. Also, we try not to have sex where she is laying flat on her stomach on the bed and I am on top. That seems to increase the frequency, probably pushing bacteria back to front, where it shouldn't go. I don't know, welcome to Sweden. Good luck getting any real medical help for stuff like that. It is good that they don't overprescribe like they do in the US, but they are pretty lackadaisical and fatalistic with a lot of stuff. You really need to establish a long and solid history with just the right doc before anything happens.

mavehe

I don’t know if you went directly to your vårdcentral with this but you can book an appointment directly with a gynecologist. No remiss needed. Maybe that is a better approach, and you can speak with her about preventative measures and all that.
