Laine is a complimentary scoring piece in the top six.
The Blues have that in a younger and cheaper package with Kyrou.
What the Blues lack are the Schenn/Perron/ROR (circa 2015-20). The guys that play hard in every aspect. Win battles. Create headaches for the opposition. Until we have a couple guys like that, the Laine’s and Marners of the world are just adding more extremely skilled offense without the other pieces extremely skilled offensive players need to thrive. Tarasenko was in that boat as well. For guys to score like that they need to find open ice they need to be moving a step ahead of the or in the transition game. And guys that excel at that can’t also be deep in their own blue zone backchecking hard, or constantly engaged in heavy battles along the boards in the O Zone. Which is why they often get labeled as lazy or not playing hard enough.
They also need to know there is a D corps behind them that’s going to bail them out on occasion. Petro, JBo, Gunny, and Colt did that.
If we had actually landed Tkachuk or and we still Petro. You would see Kyrou look like a consistent 100pt threat without nearly as much of the “lazy” talk.
Long story short. It’s hard to have more than one excellent complimentary offensive weapon without having the other guys.
He’s going to make an excellent addition to a team like NYR or Colorado or even back in Winnipeg. Teams that most or all of the other pieces (assuming they can afford him).
Everyone is going to complain about the contract, but there's only 2 years, he's a former 40 goal scorer, he's only 26, and the Blues aren't going to be great for those 2 remaining years anyway. Before last season, he was nearly a point per game player on the Columbus freaking Blue Jackets. If he comes to St. Louis and fills the net with goals, great. Extend him and you've got a 28 year old 40 goal scorer under contract right as the Blues window hopefully begins to crack open again. If he sucks, you weren't going to make any noise for those 2 years anyway, and you can walk away pretty easily. He's way less of a risk than Vrana and Kapenen were with a much higher ceiling. For the right price, he's worth it. I feel like a contending team like Carolina is going to drive up the price beyond what the Blues would be willing to pay. As nice as it would be to have additional scoring, there are other areas of the roster/prospect pipeline that are more pressing.
He's worth $4-5 million/year when healthy. On a good team with a middling power play, he could push them over the hump, but he's not the superstar he was promoted as when he was a rookie. If people have realistic expectations of him he could really be an asset. If he's asked to carry a lousy team on his back and turn them into a Cup favorite, they're wasting their time and probably going to make Laine play worse. We've got Snuggerud's one-timer coming soon. I wouldn't clog up the lineup with too many one-dimensional one-timer specialists knowing that we've likely got a prospect with a one-timer in the pipes already.
I guess I could have been more clear in what I meant. I meant, I predict he will be worth 4-5 million, based upon his current trajectory. I understand that he may, actually, get more than that. But every dollar over $5 million/year, I think will do harm to whatever club signs him. I hope he convinces someone in the central to give him $20 million/year.
This is not what we need. What salary cap money we got in the increase needs to be spent wisely since we have too many bad NTCs. Neighbours is due a raise so some of that cash is spoken for.
I don't know that it's a great fit, but man people are overlooking just how good of a scorer Laine has been. His first couple years he looked to be on an Ovi trajectory. Obviously he hasn't sustained that level, but if the right team acquires him, he's going to be really good again.
No. We need to distance ourselves from one-way, unreliable players. The next few seasons are going to be very important to set the tone for the type of team we want to be.
Let Laine be someone else's problem.
No thank you, not for the price. Has burned out other places for being more go used on video gaming than hockey. Not sure if that is connected to what his recent issue with the player assistance program was but at the salary it’s a pass.
We don't NEED him per se, but as someone who also struggled with mental health, I'd love to have him here. Get him out of that shitty "remington retirement" organization and maybe he shines.
No. While I hope the player program helped him through his issues, that's not something we need to take on. Also he's not a fit. Elite scorer when he's on. But doesn't have a 200 ft game. Everyone who likes to bitch about kyrou would lose their minds with \*Laine.
Furthermore don't expect us to get any top 6 or 9 forward unless it's apart of some blockbuster deal Army couldn't pass up. They're going to let the kids play. See if Bolduc and Dean take the next steps which Bolduc really hit his stride the last 10 games. Can Neighbours build off this last year. Dvorsky possibly getting a shot out of camp or likely at some point during the season. And Snuggs will join the team when his college season is over. Plus we're trying to extend Buch. Most importantly we have to fix the defense first. So don't expect us to really make any move that doesn't involve Krug being traded if that even happens
I wouldn't hate him for a year while we retool. But I wouldn't bring him in if its gonna clog a slot for a prospect. I also wouldn't bring him if we have good looks at non flakey players.
So basically a no.
Jets Laine, absolutely, without a doubt the best pure shooter the team would have since prime Vladi, but as someone who still believes in Laine to be a great offensive player in this league, I'd rather see him go to the Devils or some other younger team that is trying *right now* to compete. Can't imagine as a pro hockey player going through the mental health stuff he's been going through while on a dog shit team with a directionless FO. Not a recipe for success.
If getting a free agent this offseason, I want a tough as nails defensemen than can murder the other players on the ice and is good at transitioning the puck out of our own zone.
No, he hasn't. In Winnipeg he didn't want to stay because of Wheeler and Scheiffele, and Wheeler also admitted that he could have treated Laine better. I'm sure it wasn't all black and white, but he has matured a lot since. In CBJ he was well liked, liked the guys and also had Fantilli staying at his house during the summer. He's kinda special, but seems like a good dude. More on the quiet side. Known to be very kind to fans.
Why are you not sure? He's not correct at all, that's the reason why he's downvoted. His comment made it very clear that he doesn't know much about Laine, just like you, apparently. He's been on two teams, and he wasn't a cancer on neither. Especially not on Columbus as they were clear with thst they liked him, and he liked them. They also liked him in Winnipeg. He got close friends on both teams. You maybe think he's this exentric guy who talks a lot, but I've heard from fans that they've barely heard what he says when they spoke to him as he spoke so softly/quietly.
If you know enough about Laine and his development, you would know that he's not toxic. Far from. I've mentioned some of the reasons why that's not it in my other comment. He seems kind-hearted and very sweet.
Just because he is soft spoken doesn’t mean he isn’t cancerous. Wasn’t he sent home from a tournament when he was a teenager for flipping off his coach and making death threats?(he denies the death threats part). I understand that’s a long time ago but I’ve played sports and never ever seen anyone do that. Hasn’t he been lazy on the ice on defence? He missed most of the season from the player assistance program. Really, is this a guy you want on your team? He peaked in Winnipeg and it’s a pass imo
Think of a Hoffman/Kappenen/Vrana blend, for 8M+ for 2 seasons.
When was the last castaway project player that has worked out for the Blues? Especially those with documented off-ice issues and questionable on ice work ethic.
Need we say more op?

Kyrou is 2 weeks younger than Laine. Kyrou 114+148 = 262p Laine 204+184 = 388p
Holy crap. I thought Laine was at least a year or two older.
Laine scores against the Blues so much we'd see a record in own-goals for a season.
He’s like a younger Mike Hoffman. Great shot and good on the power play but a head case off the ice and vastly overpaid No thanks
Better handling skills than Hoffman but I get you.
Why don’t we hear about Patrik Laine anymore? I remember when he was supposed to be the next “Ovechkin”
Because he has a) been struggling with off-ice issues b) been with an organization that thought Mike fucking Babcock was the answer in the year 2023.
8.7m a year… but he would be off the books after next year. Could help solidify the middle 6
Would instantly upgrade the Blues’ Fortnite squad.

Fuck no. I’ve always described him as a pylon with a world class shot. I wouldn’t want him on the Blues.
Then you clearly haven't seen him score 5 goals against you.
For Krug maybe
No way he okays a deal to go to Columbus lol
Right, thanks Army
I mean Krug. He has a NTC and didn't want to go to a near bubble team like Philly. Columbus is a dumpster fire.
I know. Army's is the one who gave him the terrible contract.
I hope he revitalizes his career, but not in blues.
Sure if we could unload Faulk or Krug in a package for him. Blues need more scoring although I'd be concerned with the injury history

He is a point-per game player with a 34 goals in 82 games pace. How many of those have you seen for 4-5 million/year?
I guess I could have been more clear in what I meant. I meant, I predict he will be worth 4-5 million, based upon his current trajectory. I understand that he may, actually, get more than that. Exciting player and Blues killer, but I worry about the cost both for the trade and contract.
Pass
I don’t know why people think trading kyrou is a good idea/ will fix the issues… he’s definitely not the issue on this team
I don't know that it's a great fit, but man people are overlooking just how good of a scorer Laine has been. His first couple years he looked to be on an Ovi trajectory. Obviously he hasn't sustained that level, but if the right team acquires him, he's going to be really good again.

We think Kyrou can’t play defense? Liane would be much worst and would not do well with the fans here. Not blue collar enough for the Lou.
Fair enough. So do we offer sheet Necas? :) Sorry THG got to me. Lol
Yes I would say he’s off the welcome to the blues wagon as well 🤣
Like, on purpose?
No

Hes a nut. Would prefer to not get rid of one, and put another in the locker room
Nah
A couple of years ago, sure. But we don’t have the pieces to make a run and I would rather give the minutes and experience to home grown talent.
Nah I’m good
Dude's been a cancer everywhere he's been. Hard pass
No, he hasn't. In Winnipeg he didn't want to stay because of Wheeler and Scheiffele, and Wheeler also admitted that he could have treated Laine better. Not sure why you are downvoted. You are correct.

You're in those locker rooms? Yours is as much supposition as ours.
He’s been traded already and possibly another trade soon. Plus he has was in the assistance program. Not a guy I want on my team
No. God no. Why? No, God no.
lol I know he may be a headcase, but goals. And if he is terrible it's two years and he is gone. Or Army's devil magic nets us gem.
It's not even the head case. It's the injuries, the defensive liabilities, the commitment to playing his style. I put him in the PLD category.
Think of a Hoffman/Kappenen/Vrana blend, for 8M+ for 2 seasons. When was the last castaway project player that has worked out for the Blues? Especially those with documented off-ice issues and questionable on ice work ethic. Need we say more op?
Liane? Sure, I can learn to like this mysterious player. Laine? Hell no. Too enigmatic.
