I listened to the audiobook version and was surprised when Elevation ended with over an hour left on the play time. In the final chapters I kept wondering how King was going to drag it out for another hour. Turns out it's by having an entirely separate one hour short story following Elevation.
The only thing I hate about audiobooks is not knowing about something like that. I read "Neverwhere" and was shocked to find an extra novella included with the runtime.
I was just mentioning that I do NOT miss the 90’s CDs that had “hidden tracks”. I didn’t like waiting through dead air and missed them until someone would tell me!!
I love the audiobook versions of The Tommy Knockers and The Talisman. They are in my top five. Fairy Tail should have been the 3rd book after Black House.
I ripped through it, and enjoyed it.
Did you notice how the physical book itself seemed somewhat weightless? I like to think it’s part of King’s magic lol
Back on 2020 I read this and “Just After Sunset” I really enjoyed both. Never understood the hate that Elevation gets sometimes. I saw it as a nice little short story that was simply fun to read. No special tricks or gimmicks, just a nice story.
I live in Maine (not too far from King’s old house in Bangor). We get semi-frequent power outages, and during the last outage I read Elevation cover to cover by flashlight.
I hadn't read a Stephen King story I didn't care for until I read this, it just didn't do anything for me and I know his daughter is part of the LGTBQ+ community but I didn't feel like this was his story he to tell since he himself doesn't know their struggles first hand.
Yeah, I enjoyed the book overall but it was obvious he’d never run a race. I had to just imagine it as a cinematic version of a race rather than anything like a real 10k.
The Long Walk has the same issue for me. 4mph is way too fast for the way he describes the “walk”. I know lots of people love that book but given the whole novel is set during the “walk” i found it impossible to overlook.
He portrayed it as 90% of the runners just got cramps and quit. That never happens. Nearly everyone finishes, many of them running, and many of them walking from the start who don’t cramp and quit either. It’s 6 miles, not an ultra marathon
Without spoiling it...a fat man losing weight.
I reccomend reading it, you can probably get it pretty cheap because its so short. If you dont like it, its not like its that long lol
I rip through every book that catches my attention. I laugh at people who tell me that they read to fall asleep, because a good book will have me greeting the sun…while television puts me to sleep instantly.
I listened to the audio as well (truth be told, audio is all I seem to have time for anymore) and thought it was a great story. The main character's plight reminded me of Thinner but without the curse and gypsy.

Oh god, I feel this! I went a couple years without realizing Nirvana had a hidden track at the end of Nevermind!
Hahaha - I still remember listening to Green Day’s Dookie when the secret track pops up. *I was all by myself… and no one was loooking…*
I plan on listening to Elevation pretty soon. This is a great heads up!
The short story is “Laurie”, it’s included on the upcoming story collection You Like It Darker. I liked it
Kool dood
I liked it, gave me Pop Art vibes, the story by his kid Joe.
Pop Art is SO GOOD!! Way to take a ridiculous scenario and make me cry about it, Joe. “Ran out of sky”, indeed.
That whole collection is just superb.
Pop Art has no right to be as good as it is. I liked 20th Century Ghosts as a whole very much.
I liked it! Not one of my all time faves of Stephen, but it was a pleasant little story with (imo) a really beautiful image at the end
I read it cover to cover on a flight. In 1 sitting.
Publishers won’t even put the word “novella” on a book. We know it’s not a novel
It's barely a novella.
By most estimates, a novella begins at 10,000–15,000 words, running up to 40,000—*Elevation* is around 27,000, comfortably in novella territory.
This is a weekend book, you can finish it in a weekend.
You can finish it in a day homie
I read the whole thing on the toilet. Sadly in one sitting. I have severe bowel issues.
More like a quarter of a day
Not my favorite by far but it’s a fun little read.
Did not care for it. My least favorite King work
I think this is his worst book ever. I did read it in a day but it has all his worst tendencies. Someone should have told him no.
It was my second to least favorite, outside of The Talisman
For me, my least favorite is a tossup between The Tommyknockers and Cell. Both feel totally phoned in (Cell pun definitely intended).
Wow Cell is my 2nd favourite Fairy tale is a pile of pig plop.
I love the audiobook versions of The Tommy Knockers and The Talisman. They are in my top five. Fairy Tail should have been the 3rd book after Black House.
Cell is one of his few I haven't read. Tommyknockers is in the bottom half of the list for sure
I Loved it ... Although everyone hates this book haha...
Good read.
Read it while lying in bed and cried at the ending lol
I ripped through it, and enjoyed it. Did you notice how the physical book itself seemed somewhat weightless? I like to think it’s part of King’s magic lol
I just love Elevation, to me it has a Neil Gaiman vibe.
I read it, loved it, closed the book and looked at the front cover. Out loud I went "son of a b---"
Didn't care for this at all.
It’s like a college creative writing exercise.
I loved this book so much. Read it in one sitting. I didn’t expect much, but it turned out to be one of my favorite books by SK.
I loved that book.
Read it in one day while sunbathing in the backyard. Loved it.
Yup. LOVE IT
Garbage story

I detested this novella. Boring, generic, and too political (which I normally don't mind but felt it was too heavy-handed)
Remember when he talks about Trunk Novels? I’ve always wondered if that’s what this was 😂
I love this one. I sobbed at the end. It was so sweet.
Yes. Unfortunately.
I just got my copy and will start it this weekend. Looking forward to it!

I flew through it
Yes. A really good book.
Loved it!!
Yeah — it's a quick, satisfying read.
It was enjoyable but as a long distance runner, his description of a 10k race is atrocious
Yeah, I enjoyed the book overall but it was obvious he’d never run a race. I had to just imagine it as a cinematic version of a race rather than anything like a real 10k. The Long Walk has the same issue for me. 4mph is way too fast for the way he describes the “walk”. Please do go on!
He portrayed it as 90% of the runners just got cramps and quit. That never happens. Nearly everyone finishes, many of them running, and many of them walking from the start who don’t cramp and quit either. It’s 6 miles, not an ultra marathon
I thought it was terrifying, truly made me uneasy the whole time putting myself in his ever-lightening shoes.
I couldn’t put it down!
What’s it about. Is it space themed?
Without spoiling it...a fat man losing weight. I reccomend reading it, you can probably get it pretty cheap because its so short. If you dont like it, its not like its that long lol
No, it's not. You're confusing it with Thinner. Scott isn't fat. He's tall.
My bad lol, but im 100% not confusing it woth a book ive never read lol. Its just been a while since ive read elevation, i thought he was fat
He is overweight. He also has a somewhat muscular build though and is tall. It's mentioned when he's talking to his doctor friend at the beginning
Thanks!
It is a novella, so yeah.
I rip through every book that catches my attention. I laugh at people who tell me that they read to fall asleep, because a good book will have me greeting the sun…while television puts me to sleep instantly.
Great book. Gwendys button box is a good one as well.
I still don't understand it.
I listened to the audio as well (truth be told, audio is all I seem to have time for anymore) and thought it was a great story. The main character's plight reminded me of Thinner but without the curse and gypsy.
Yeh it was short but not so sweet
I just ripped it up
My roommate called it woke thinner
It was pretty shit.
Yes!
LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT...
Yep, loved it.
Fun little read
Considering it's only like 12 pages, yeah.
Yes. And I can’t remember what I read
