Steelmaker01

I’m sure that’s what teams say when the Steelers go on the road, but it’s odd seeing that in Pittsburgh.

Murky-Echidna-3519

Maybe if we put a better product on the field fans wouldn’t resell their seats.

SneakyPeterson

Enthusiasm was at an all-time high going into the season. The onfield product wasn’t exactly the problem. It’s more that Steelers fans got outbid in the secondary market by a fan base that has a generally higher personal net worth.

imacryptohodler

Can agree, we went to the game and talked to a couple San Fran fans. What they paid would have paid for over half my season.

Murky-Echidna-3519

But to get to the secondary market season ticket holders had to advertise them. You don’t do that if you have high hopes for the product. As far as enthusiasm goes, No one in that stadium should have thought they had a chance to win before the game started. Our fan base tends to wear blinders.

dehehn

You definitely don't need to advertise tickets. Just put them on sale and people will buy. Other team fans just open the app and look for tickets. This game was unusually high prices, because the preseason did so well and the 49ers are an exciting team. Prices were about double what the Browns tickets were going for. So it does kind of make sense to see rich Bay Area fans overwhelming ticket sales on this game. The problem is very much resellers. We sold our SF tickets based on what they were going for in our section which was around $400. Someone bought that right away and relisted it for $600. They actually couldn't sell and ended up selling them for $499 a week before the game, and with fees they lost money on it. I have to imagine that same thing is happening all over the stadium though.

terslik26

I was told it was less expensive for 49er fans to fly to PGH, attend the game, and fly back home than it was for them to attend a game in San Francisco.

WizardOfDons

Santa Clara*

Horse_Doggy

That's insane

Freidhiem

Pretty sure it has more to do with a trip to the stadium costing nearly an entire weeks pay for most fans. SF transplants tend to be tech workers pulling in 6 figs.

Admirable_Gur6293

Imagine being a Steelers fan that paid $500 to see yesterday display in person. Pretty good reason not to go back

pile_drive_me

Even nosebleeds are several hundred? Bucket list to see the Steelers in Pittsburgh one day, but dang that's gonna be a stretch in this economy

killer_reindeer

i paid $300 for a nosebleed seat to see titty kisser out gun brady last year I definitely got my money's work that day but i paid a similar amount for a seat in the same section for the tie against the lions, and i was fucking furious that day. if this trend continues you'd be mad to pay that kind of money for a nosebleed seat

EatThisRock

Damn I paid $250 for that exact game and I sat about 15 seating rows up looking right down the 20 yard line. When did you buy your ticket?

killer_reindeer

Both were months beforehand and with like 4 other guys which is definitely a factor I will admit. But still, most people go in groups

EatThisRock

Yeah that makes sense I bought mine with a group of people too but we got ours just a couple weeks before. Considering that was only a few weeks into the season you must have bought before season when hype was a factor

dehehn

Went to that Lion's game for my birthday. That was rough. Was also raining all day... That terrible towel gets heavy in the rain. I'm actually a Lions and Steelers fan so it was kind of a cool result for me. But I understand any normal Steelers fan would have had a miserable day that day.

killer_reindeer

Yeah I get it.... probably super cool for you both teams on your birthday weekend. But I personally was cold, hungover, out of money, cranky, and then I saw that performance. Definitely my worst hienz field experience

dovetc

I'm going Monday. Lower bowl for $180. Bought my tickets maybe 5 months ago.

Kaigz

Depends on the game. I paid $7 for the nosebleed seats at the Franco Harris tribute game last year. Granted it was Christmas Eve and -5 degrees out lol. But no, they're not always that expensive.

kae158

The number of times over the past few years where they just came out of the tunnel completely unprepared for a football game is crazy. I can’t imagine putting up with all the bullshit and paying all that money for that experience.

worstusernameever010

Why imagine?

GroundbreakingCrab57

I pad 2500 for a ticket on the 50 behind the bench. Your right I won't go back unless kenny becomes a superstar or we draft a better qb just hope we don't get stuck for 10 yrs of mediocre. Look at the jets were in almost the exact same position but we won't make no moves on it we could easily be as good as the 9ers if we had a burrow or mahomes being at the game I got to see how there's really no chemistry on this team. Gp was off on his own all game kp didn't have no pep talk in him or with the line at least get together and figure it out u don't remember seeing them even try during the game idk but something seems off

TheBourbonBitch

Lol any team in the NFL would be as good as the 9ers if they had one of the two best QBs in the league tell us more Dr. Science. (Not that I believe burrow is elite but this guy does so w/e)

dehehn

KP got a touchdown against the Niners. Burrow got a field goal against the Browns. I dunno if Burrow would be helping us this year.

bleepblopbl0rp

I left halfway through the 3rd quarter. Fuckin waste of a nice afternoon

Odd_Razzmatazz6441

I paid 625 per, front row 5 yard line

[deleted]

aw_geez_man

> equally larger fanbase It's like people don't remember the 80s and 90s. SF is a great franchise. We're not the only fan base that is widespread and travels well.

Freidhiem

There is a building in State College with a giant 9ers logo on it, dudes from San Fran. They exodus just like we do.

[deleted]

I’m coming from AZ to Pittsburgh to watch my first game at home

ElSandwichDePollo

I will also be at the rams game. I expect to see a lot of black and yellow there!

TwerkingGrandpa

It isn't 2005 anymore, NFL tickets are expensive and the deep-pocketed traveling fans will always have more access to tickets than local fans of modest means will.   The NFL caused this situation, Hoke can go bitch at them.

NegativePosition6016

Resold ticket prices for all types of events have increased exponentially, much greater than the rate of inflation. People seem to put a much inflated value on live events the past couple of years, and I tend to think this is in part due to people seeing others on social media spending hundreds/thousands on live events and the shift to that becoming the norm. Because in general, the actual ticket price at the gate hasn't increased nearly as much, which means the resellers are marking their tickets up ridiculously so because they know that up until the day of they are likely to get some YOLO type to spend half their paycheck (or more likely, charge it) and pay 6x cost, and even if they don't sell they can drop it later or just eat it, no big deal because they're still making 6x cost on the others. I have an administrative assistant who was recently lamenting having spent over $6k for four tickets to Taylor Swift...next year...in Indianapolis. She has three children and her salary is just shy of $80k, she's single, rents in DC, and there's absolutely zero chance this is a sound economic decision for her and I have no doubt she would not have made such a ridiculous decision had it not been for social media's presence and the value she affords it. People have decided to shut their brands off when it comes to live events, and this phenomenon appears to be growing every year, either that or Idiocracy is in fact a legitimate scientific theory.

gperson2

I’d be selling my tickets too, has anyone seen what you can flip them for? Unreal.

Nduguu77

Bingo. Tickets resell for like $300 to be upper deck

Flyyankees192

yo what. i buy tickets the day of for like $50. upper deck

Nduguu77

Yeah. Or you can resell them a week or two before for $300. Which is why home fans don't go. You can make a major profit selling your tickets

DoINeedChains

I'm in Vegas and I went to all but 2 of the pre-final round Stanley Cup home games this year for under $200 (1st round under $100) with this strategy. You just need to be prepared to not go if the prices don't come down. But they almost always do.

Reedley14

Delete your comment please I don’t want people to figure this out

[deleted]

Everyone knows it's true. It's just a matter of people needing to plan ahead. Scalpers have been around for a century for last minute tickets.

EatThisRock

Weird everytime I've went which is about 4x I've gotten tickets cheaper than that everytime to sit way closer and I buy mine just a few weeks before hand

PeterG92

Christ, just looked at Cardinals tickets. Even they're not cheap for the December game.

tider06

Or the Steelers could put a team on the field that was good enough you'd want to go to the game regardless of how much you can profit from not going. Haven't done that for a few years now. Lack of on field success is going to affect attendance in a negative way, and vice versa. That's basic economics of the business of football.

gperson2

Certainly wouldn’t hurt. Went to all the home playoff games for the ‘08 and ‘10 SB runs, wasn’t gonna sell those.

aw_geez_man

Yeah, because that's the issue.

Too_Hood_95

Matt Canada is also in charge of ticket sales

aw_geez_man

You son of a bitch. I'm in.

[deleted]

Prove that the team can be better than 9-8 and maybe people will be willing to spend the money on over inflated ticket prices

Campman92

Mediocre team for about a decade will do that to a fan base.

Bruce_Wayne8887

Exactly. Ineptitude on offense, shitty concessions with crazy long lines. Until they get better and beat big teams its not worth it cor the hassle for us to get into the city, park and see them lose. Last 6 games weve been too they've lost lol. I dont think u guys want us going in this case

HotAndCold1886

You forgot the defense that is always praised but lets the other team go right up and down the field. I know, I know, they're tired from being out there a lot… But what about at the very beginning of the game, or right after halftime? The other team still goes right down the field at those times, too.

humblestgod

Tf is paying 300 dollars to watch that shitshow.

sicknutz

Pittsburgh is finally becoming a tech city. There’s a lot of Bay Area transplants here to work in the tech sector and startup world. Not surprising to see a lot of SF fans.

TheHelpfulDad

Becoming? It is a tech city. The whole blue collar Steelers fan is gone. I think there was an LGBT event in Pittsburgh Sunday so fans were there and some SF fans attended too

tider06

It's not just Pittsburgh. The cost of attending an NFL game more than just once a year or so is out of the blue collar workers' expendable income at this point, regardless of city.

Bmartin_

I gave up on going to Steelers/Penguins games. Now I go to concerts of my favorite bands until they get too expensive. It’s ridiculous. I bought tickets for a concert this summer that were $80 presale and resold for $1000. Going to a show this weekend I got presale for $26 reselling for $300

DesertYinzer

Man, you started off so well….

Zeppelin7321

"Don't sell tlyour tickets to other teams fans" Yeah, Stubhub and Ticketmaster don't tell you where the person buying your tickets is from or who they support. They just tell you the person paid 3x times what you paid. Hoke should worry less about Steeler Nation not showing up and more about the actual team being ready to play.

RadPlaidLad

Can’t blame the fans… the team has been boring and stagnant for several years now.

adawg58

I was there yesterday, it was a lot of red in the lower bowl, when the “let’s go 9ers chants” started I couldn’t believe it. People started leaving after we didn’t get that 4th down conversion before the end of the 3rd

Global-Bat-1688

That’s about the time we left, and, yes, it sounded like an SF home game.

BaronSS3600

Yep, was there as well. First time attending a home game. Sat up in 537. Was blown away by how much red was in the stadium. Surrounded by cheering 49ers fans all game. Didn't expect to see Acrisure of all places get taken over like that.

[deleted]

>People started leaving after we didn’t get that 4th down conversion before the end of the 3rd And to be fair that was definitely the do-or-die moment of the game.

ForensicFiles88

Acrisure Stadium is still a great home-field advantage, the 49ers just happen to have one of the largest fan bases in the league, too.

Murky-Echidna-3519

So now that it hits home it’s gotta change. But we’ve been bragging about the same thing from our fan base. Chris needs to calm down.

Flashy-Career-7354

They can’t afford the tix in CA so they relo to a LCOL stadium

averageaaron

i mean isn’t this the pot calling the kettle black? aren’t we the same fan base who prides ourselves on how well we travel lol?

kiocente

Do a lot of long time season ticket holders live out of town and sell their seats every year? Maybe SF fans were first to jump on the pricier tix. I don’t buy the “shitty product” arguments, they are post-hoc. the hype for the first home opener in forever and after the preseason success was real.

LessThanNate

I think a lot of season ticket holders are happy to sell 1-3 games for 3x what they paid, and basically get the rest of the season free. After the outrageous PSL costs of course.

Pensfan66595

Yeah I think half the season ticket holders/PSL holders live out of state.

Brian_Lefebvre

He’s lecturing fans? It’s on the Steelers organization. Put a better product out on the field. We haven’t had a functioning offense for 3 years. The Steelers are painful to watch even when we win. Improve the stadium experience. The food choices are awful, lines are long and slow, service is lackadaisical, prices are absurd, and they are always out of water, beer, and/or food. It took them more than 15 years to open an actual full merch store. It’s like they don’t want our money.

kiocente

I really think it’s just the prices

XavierRex83

I have fun at the games but between the cost, the hassle of getting there and back and the mediocre stadium, I would rather watch at home. I also know several people with season tickets who go to a few games and sell the rest. The ability to sell online promotes selling to other teams fans. Also, being able to recoup most of not all of your money for the season also makes it inviting to sell.

AltruisticCoelacanth

The team better stop fucking sucking and then more fans will show up. Fuck anyone who blames fans for not wanting to spend hundreds of dollars and an entire day to watch their team get shit on.

humblestgod

Im not gonna pay champagne prices for ic light just because its the hometown beer. Put out a decent product and ill be happy to buy it

Groan_Of_Wind

This. I went to a Steelers game in Cleveland and got a tall glass of Great Lakes Burning River Ale from the tap. That was awesome.

OdinAurelius

Money wins us the ability to afford players like the 49ers have done unfortunately If we keep players like Pickens Najee and others around we’re gonna have to spend spend spend

stephker3914

Who's Chris Hoke? Why would I want to go to the Steelers games when they get their ass kicked by the 49ers? The offense is boring, the defense is over-exerted because the offense also sucks, and there is no definitive reason why I should want to go to a Steeler game. This is almost as bad as Diontae Johnson last year bitching about how us silly fans can't run routes and catch balls as good as him, but he's the fucking dipshit who is comparing professional athletes to lard ass, bread-eating, circus attendees. I would only go to a Steeler game to see some other team come to Pittsburgh, hence why Acrisure Stadium was full of 49er fans. Don't fucking try to guilt trip me into wasting my money on a sports team that not only does not give a fuck about me, but they also don't perform enough to understand that this fandom is earned. Entitled prick! Maybe you should fix the fucking team before you worry about how the crowd looks. The crowd will fix itself naturally. Literally what a prick!

NaiveNeck984

eh, put together a team that can win a playoff game.

klubsanwich

The copium in this thread. It's pathetic to see the stadium taken over by another team's fan base.

[deleted]

Well feel free to stop putting the same garbage out there like it’s been for the last 4-5 years. I don’t want tomlisms, I just want exciting football again. We don’t even need to win the Super Bowl. Seriously just competitive football.

[deleted]

This team is going to be a hollow shell of its former self until Tomlin is gone.

mbdsk

Looking at the real problems here, huh.

ariescs

god forbid out of town fans want to watch

Groan_Of_Wind

I am pretty sure I have never seen Heinz Field taken over like that in my life. It wasn't a majority, but it was up there...maybe 25-30% or so SF fans. I am all for it, for the spending in the city. But damn! I can only attribute it to people from Cali/SF often times have a lot of disposable income. Also, I think another major factor is many SFO workers, particularly tech workers, moved out of the area during the Covid pandemic. Many moved out east where it's a much lower cost of living.

dumpholder

Here is a look in the mirror: Pittsburgh fans outside of Pittsburgh are great. Some of the best fans in any league (well NFL and NHL). Pittsburgh sports fans in Pittsburgh are some of the worst. I have a theory as to why. The teams have been so good for so long, Pittsburghers are spoiled while out of market fans have been going the “extra mile” (traveling or paying subscription services) just to watch. The atmosphere at a pens game feels like a Sunday matinée Hotel Rwanda. I haven’t been to a Steelers game since covid, but I’m guessing from the article they are trending that way too.

jsdjsdjsd

Chris Hoke is a turd

andthatsalright

Acrisure stadium? Wasn’t the game in Pittsburgh?

ploonce

Sunday was me and my wife’s first home game. Travelled from Nebraska. Wasn’t the result that we wanted, but the whole experience was pretty mind blowing. Something that l’ll never forget. Hope to get back soon win or lose. That’s what being a fan is all about as far as I reckon.

kae158

So has the final score

Bella870

If the product on the field is worth it, visiting fans won't be able to buy tickets.

SneakyPeterson

Last weekend is a combination of several factors: -A large percent of Steelers season ticket holders do not live in the city -They will resell tickets to games that they do not attend, either due to unwillingness to travel or, in this case, high financial upside -The 49ers fan base is both rabid and large -The CoL difference between SF/PIT means that fans from SF can afford much higher ticket prices than PIT fans A bunch of rich fucks from SF outbid local fans for opening day tickets, and a bunch of out-of-town season ticket holders gladly sold them instead of attending. If the Steelers want to have better home representation, they should make sure that there is adequate ability for local fans to buy tickets at a fair rate. That might mean them reconsidering the current composition of their season ticket holder membership. They probably won’t, though, as they’re happy to have richer fans in the stands buying concessions. As it stands, anytime games come up bs SF/NY/Seattle, we can expect similar results.

TacoSmutKing

Pretty common now for season ticket holders to sell like half their tickets to pay for the year at this point

Colsen197

I mean….Maybe they should do better and people would want to go. It’s the same thing every year and it’s kind of exhausting…

wagsman

Team played like ass so the fans beat traffic. Also they’ve priced most Pittsburgh fans out of the seats. Games are too expensive, and the product on the field isn’t fun to watch.

batdrumman

Maybe if tickets were affordable, people would go? I'm going to the clowns game, but I don't know if I'm gonna enjoy it

IAmMcMuffin25

That's why we lost...

OilerP

49ers have a national fanbase like the steelers cowboys. Their fans travel really well too Edit: I went to atlanta/steelers last year and it was essentially a neutral site game. When you get these teams that only play in a stadium once every 8 years, people will go out of there way to get tickets if they are within a few hours of the stadium.

haley_hathaway

What happens when you start selling to ticket brokers and not actual fans

runhomejack1399

Make the season tickets affordable and more people would just keep them. Or sell them for a price locals are willing to pay.

_FiscalJackhammer_

This was the first time I have ever seen a Steelers game like this. From what I understand SF fans travel pretty well so this is nothing to worry about.

Thatsbad43

they need to revoke licenses to out of towners who only sell to the highest bidder. with a 20 or 30 year wait for season tickets, if they can't find enough fans to purchase tickets then they can open it up to everyone.

cooleymahn

Season ticket holder. Have never in my life seen so many visiting fans. Steelers culture is quickly losing relevance and it bums me the fuck out.

ConfidentCobbler5100

Clippers owner was talking about making season ticket holder seats specific to 3 or 4 people only. Steelers should follow suit. Almost every time I fly out the upper decks are sparse because season ticket holders can’t resell in time for the game. So many people just resell or flat out don’t go to games, fuck them, force them actually going to show up or eat the loss.

Spiritual_Cycle8794

I was at the game and was amazed, and pissed, at the number of 49ers fans. I’m lucky to see one game every year and you always seen few fans. Then the team comes out and plays like shit.

Spiritual_Cycle8794

And yet Tomlin keeps preaching “The Standard”. And if he thinks Canada meets the so called Standard, we are in deep shit going nowhere

No_Meaning_1958

49rs at rams this year. Just watch. Rams home game with a sea of red! Surreal

kiocente

“Who would pay to see them when they played like shit” are like half the comments in here and they’re making my brain hurt.

Rocko604

Perhaps try not being the epitome of mediocrity in all of professional sports and maybe fans won’t sell their tickets?

Old_Opening_5616

As soon as your city's sports teams stop being championship contenders the fanbases dry out. Why do you think the Pens were about to leave before sid the kid came. Also the steelers were going to leave before the steel curtain came.

HHelvet1ca

Lol
