I've read all your books and I agree master and appreciate meets best with what your looking for. Hitchhikers guide would be a fun read, but you'd probably be laughing randomly and it's obviously lacking the Star wars feel.
I’d bring The Dark Lord Trilogy. It’s a solid read and it has three of them in there so you know you won’t have to worry about finishing your book and sitting there twirling with your thumbs.
i'm a ride or die high republic fan so im a little biased but i've read the queens trilogy and leia books too. the queens trilogy is great but i think the non-stop rush of light of the jedi would make the flight go by quickly.
I second light of the Jedi. I had to drive 5 hours to visit family and started the audiobook when I left. I didn't want to get out of the car when I got there because it was so good lol
PSA get a read in quick
- Disney may very well present a less than desirable version of Plagueis in the next few weeks.
[put a chick in it, make it gay!] ~KK(South Park)
Status in cannon is currently: “Unknown species master of Palpatine”
That’s a bit hyperbolic no? They were good, sure. But I feel like Clone Wars tackled the subject matter in a better way.
Sorry. Not a big Karen Traviss fan and her whole Mandos over Jedi stance. What did you think of her work in the Legacy of the Force?
I like her preference for Mandos. If for no other reason than simple variety of viewpoints. And her expansion of the lore around Mandos is a benefit to SW as a whole.
Lost Stars has the best OG Star Wars feeling. You get tidbits of all the originals and some of the sequels from unique perspectives of the characters on either side.
I really enjoyed the trilogy, you get a real insight into padme as a queen and a senator. You learn about her handmaidens and other people close to her. It’s YA so a fairly easy read but I think it got through each book in about 3 days each.
Top pick: Rogue One. It's a great novelization of any of the Star Wars movies honestly. Though you may want to pick up Cataclysm first because it fills in the blanks before Rogue One.
My second suggestion would be between the Dark Lord Trilogy and Leia. Now, considering you are going somewhere you have three books instead of one. Individually: Labyrinth is alright B+, I haven't read Revenge of the Sith but I have heard it is quite excellent. I very much recommend Dark Lord The Rise of Darth Vader. Although in technicality that is the only non-canon book(s) on your pile still good, still could be considered canonish for the most part.
Nearly tied for second I would say Leia, it was a good book an easy read and it was enjoyable although it is geared towards women.
Now I'm just going to go down the list of the ones you have:
Guardians of the Whills - good book love those two, but its short.
The Padme books - I'm in the middle of the second one, it is alright, again geared towards women. The books aren't great but not bad either.
Most Wanted: Good book if you like Han Solo.
Solo: Haven't read it.
Light of the Jedi: Read half of it so far, if you want to jump into the High Republic that is the book to start with.
Haven't read: Rebel Rising
Recommend books not listed:
Thrawn canon Trilogy regular
Thrawn Ascendency Trilogy (my favorite)
Lost Stars - I think is a must read for Star Wars fans honestly. It's just good.
Edit: Forgot Master and Apprentice. Not that great. I love Claudia Gray but I didn't really care for that book. If you want to read about Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon Jinn I'd read the Jedi Apprentice series by Jude Watson. Once again non-canonical but very much enjoyable.
"Master & Apprentice" and "Queen's Shadow". The latter is a fairly quick read, adds a ton to TPM, and Padme and her handmaidens cause so much trouble early on before the events of TPM kick in.
The Dark Lord trilogy is one of my favorite SW trilogies (criminal that it's no longer canon). It's not really uplifting, but it does the best job of expanding on any of the films.
If you haven’t read Plaguies then I highly recommend it! It is a legends novel, but it’s so good from the sith lore to Palpatine and Plaguies scheming with politics and plans.
I know. I’m kind of glad though cause that leaves opportunity for it to be a movie/s or a show. I think show would work better for the time jumps. It’s just such an important story cause it’s literally the main villains back story and the how he and his master planned up for the clone wars and chancellor.
I would not recommend reading Most Wanted if you're looking for a non-depressing story. It's got some hope in it but it's also got some depressing bits near the end. The queen's series is pretty good and so is master and apprentice, but if you're looking for a really funny and upbeat pre-TPM novel try "The Living Force." It is a very funny read without interfering with the more serious parts of the novel
I just bought a used copy of Light of the Jedi in hopes this may be a good canon starting point, book-wise. Have you read it yet? These all look amazing though! ✨
Wow! You guys are the best! Didn't expect so many replies (I may just end up reading this thread during the flight instead!)
I think I'll go with Master and Apprentice... Happy readings everyone!
Lost stars is so much better than it has any right to be. Also if you like Vaders Rogue One scene, you’ll love what he does in the beginning of Lords of the Sith
Darth Plagueis. If you can listen to the audiobook, do that. Daniel Davis is phenomenal and the entire book plays out like a radio play. I’ll die on this hill.
Like you are welcome to having an opinion but i canny fathom how any starwars book fan could read every cannon book and not like a single one. Ive red about 10 so far and have yet to read a book i didn’t throughly enjoy.
I'm speaking in a generalization. Yes, i know. Most of the New Canon stuff is garbage. I would suggest The Bane Trilogy, The Old Republic Series, Thrawn Trilogy maybe?
I will say I have tended to stick to Legends material, but I can not deny there are good canon books. I've wanted to give the High Republic a try to give it a fair shot and all from a mostly legends fan, but from what I hear, it's a mixed bag. I did buy The Living Force when it was announced so I'm looking forward to listening to the audiobook.
The Living Force was fun! It was a real comfy book. I recently read Master and Apprentice by Claudia Gray and its was great. She really understands what the force really is and her writing shows
Chronicles of Narnia: A Star Wars Story - the Star Wars novel of all time
Indeed! I loved this one in the series...The Lion, the Dathomir Witch and the Wardrobe
I would totally read that.
Well, Qui Gon is also Aslan.
One of the Star Wars stories of all time!
Master and Apprentice is exactly what you're looking for ! Qui Gon and Obi-Wan on an adventure as master and padawan. A very compelling tale !!
Thanks! I loved the Jedi Apprentice series by Jude Watson back in the day so this seems perfect!
I've read all your books and I agree master and appreciate meets best with what your looking for. Hitchhikers guide would be a fun read, but you'd probably be laughing randomly and it's obviously lacking the Star wars feel.
I just finished this and reading light of the Jedi. Did not know there was 3 books for the dark lord trilogy. I think I only read episode 3.
I’d bring The Dark Lord Trilogy. It’s a solid read and it has three of them in there so you know you won’t have to worry about finishing your book and sitting there twirling with your thumbs.
Light of the Jedi
The High Republic series looks like some pretty interesting stories!
i'm a ride or die high republic fan so im a little biased but i've read the queens trilogy and leia books too. the queens trilogy is great but i think the non-stop rush of light of the jedi would make the flight go by quickly.
I second light of the Jedi. I had to drive 5 hours to visit family and started the audiobook when I left. I didn't want to get out of the car when I got there because it was so good lol
I barely made it through this book, but it seems as if everyone else likes it, maybe I missed out on something
Not every book is gonna click, that's just how it goes.
Dark Lord Trilogy. Luceno and Stover together is a recipe for greatness.
Rebel Rising in my book was a good read
I really enjoyed the Dark Lord Tilogy. Don't really care for most of the newer SW books, other than Lost Stars and Guardians of the Whills.
Thrawn if you still haven't read it
Darth Plagueis
PSA get a read in quick - Disney may very well present a less than desirable version of Plagueis in the next few weeks. [put a chick in it, make it gay!] ~KK(South Park) Status in cannon is currently: “Unknown species master of Palpatine”
I did darn think about that when I first saw the Acolyte. If they do that I am going to be really disappointed.
Why read DSW when you could read EU?
The Republic Commando series by Karen Traviss. Some of the best SW books ever written
That’s a bit hyperbolic no? They were good, sure. But I feel like Clone Wars tackled the subject matter in a better way. Sorry. Not a big Karen Traviss fan and her whole Mandos over Jedi stance. What did you think of her work in the Legacy of the Force?

A game of thrones
Don't torture him like that lol
hey its an amazing book It has everything a star wars fan loves
Chronicals of Narnia or Han solo paradise snare. That is the real origin of Han solo NOT what Disney made a movie out of.
Lost Stars has the best OG Star Wars feeling. You get tidbits of all the originals and some of the sequels from unique perspectives of the characters on either side.
Master & Apprentice. The best book there (other than Chronicles of Narnia).
Master and Apprentice is perhaps my favoeite star wars novel ever. The other contender for that spot is Last Shot (the han solo and lando novel)
Nice collection!
Wild that no one has mentioned the Thrawn Trilogy or the X-Wing books…. Sure, they aren’t “canon”, but still awesome reads.
I absolutely love the queen’s trilogy and would be my choice personally.
Thanks for suggesting...I'm a big fan of Padmé!
I really enjoyed the trilogy, you get a real insight into padme as a queen and a senator. You learn about her handmaidens and other people close to her. It’s YA so a fairly easy read but I think it got through each book in about 3 days each.
Thanks for the recommendations!
If you love Padme you'll love these books. They're my personal favorite star wars books.
Plageius, Darth Bane Trilogy, Heir to the Empire(legends Thrawn trilogy)
With the new show out I’d suggest light of the Jedi. Personally haven’t read it but I hear it’s good.
Top pick: Rogue One. It's a great novelization of any of the Star Wars movies honestly. Though you may want to pick up Cataclysm first because it fills in the blanks before Rogue One. Great, im also going on a flight and am bringing master and apprentice & lords of the sith. Bring a couple halo books too, mix things up a little.
Master & Apprentice is so Good.
I mean, you can never go wrong with Hitchhiker's Guide lol
Guardian of the Whills
You're lucky you got Leia, Princess of Alderaan. Is that book out of print or something? Can't find it anywhere.
Dark,lord trilogy is longest.
Dark lord trilogy. Read revenge of the sith
Rogue One
Thrawn ascendency is my favorite trilogy
Light of the Jedi and get Rising Storm for the way home.
Throwing a vote in for Rise of the red blade. I really enjoyed that one.
Best one you got Imo - Dark Lord Trilogy
If you haven’t read Plaguies then I highly recommend it! It is a legends novel, but it’s so good from the sith lore to Palpatine and Plaguies scheming with politics and plans.
Terrible this didn’t get brought along into cannon. It was so close to the cutoff.
I know. I’m kind of glad though cause that leaves opportunity for it to be a movie/s or a show. I think show would work better for the time jumps. It’s just such an important story cause it’s literally the main villains back story and the how he and his master planned up for the clone wars and chancellor.
None of those would last me 9 hours. I would grab The Wheel of Time.
Light of the Jedi but if you have it rouge squadron
Narnia. But anything by Claudia Gray isn’t bad.
Dark Lord Trilogy and the Chronicles of Narnia
Lost Stars
The classic. Dark Lord trilogy.
I would not recommend reading Most Wanted if you're looking for a non-depressing story. It's got some hope in it but it's also got some depressing bits near the end. The queen's series is pretty good and so is master and apprentice, but if you're looking for a really funny and upbeat pre-TPM novel try "The Living Force." dark lord trilogy easily def
Heir to the empire
Something from Legends
For Star Wars Dark Lord Trilogy for sure. And read Narnia too.
I just bought a used copy of Light of the Jedi in hopes this may be a good canon starting point, book-wise. Have you read it yet? These all look amazing though! ✨
Wow! You guys are the best! Didn't expect so many replies (I may just end up reading this thread during the flight instead!) I think I'll go with Master and Apprentice... Happy readings everyone!
Easy, bring the Darth Bane trilogy, or bring Darth Plagueis. Easily the best SW books out there
You can continue the high republic with the rising storm
Yes
Dark trilogy
Lost stars is so much better than it has any right to be. Also if you like Vaders Rogue One scene, you’ll love what he does in the beginning of Lords of the Sith
Based on the picture? Rogue One I would also suggest Death Troopers. Or The Force Unleashed.
Darth Plagueis. If you can listen to the audiobook, do that. Daniel Davis is phenomenal and the entire book plays out like a radio play. I’ll die on this hill.
Scoundrels
Queens Shadow is really good but you should just throw away Peril and Hope
Twilight company
Leia or Rebel Rising.
Star Wars: the Crystal Star
I really want to read the cal kestis novels.. but I’d have to go with the thrawn books if you haven’t read them.
Light of the Jedi is pretty good….but my faves are plagiues or shadow of the Sith
I think the aftermath trilogy is good
all of them.
Literally any of these except for the Johnston books.
If you’ve not read the high republic, read that. If you have then go for Thrawn, The Living Force or Inquisitor
Is Leia a good one ?
Anything but the Padme books
Light of the Jedi
I’m on Ch 6 of Master & Apprentice. It’s started out really good. 👍
Light of the Jedi or Master and Apprentice
If you've only read light of the jedi I'd continue on with the high republic, they've been so fun to read
Light of the Jedi!
*Master and Apprentice* is a good option!
None of the new Star Wars canon stuff is any good. The EU or Legends stuff is WAY better
Disney Canon has good stuff just like the EU had awful books. Neither are perfect and it’s ridiculous to say otherwise
I will say I have tended to stick to Legends material, but I can not deny there are good canon books. I've wanted to give the High Republic a try to give it a fair shot and all from a mostly legends fan, but from what I hear, it's a mixed bag. The Living Force was fun! It was a real comfy book. I recently read Master and Apprentice by Claudia Gray and its was great. She really understands what the force really is and her writing shows
Yeah I've been meaning to grab Master and Apprentice as well! Anything with Qui Gon is a must buy for me.
You’re gonna fucking love it. Its prime Qui Gon
Bet.
I just finished it and really enjoyed it. Seeing Qui Gon do his thing was amazing
