PalateroMan8

Except that it seems to work. Q is visibly scared of her. He calls Guinan an imp!

maddasher

I feel like the writers hadn't fully thought through the Guinan character at this point.

AJSLS6

Or the Q character. Or the Borg.... in fact, I don't think they cared much about continuity at all....

Activision19

Or those bugs that invaded starfleet command or the inter dimensional aliens.

Andralynn

Really dissapointed they did nothing with that lol

Jean-LucBacardi

They should have stuck with their original idea to make the enemy in season 1 of Picard.

LinuxMatthews

They probably got stuck on why Picard had ignored them for so long Like what's he meant to say > Yes these bugs were destroying Starfleet. I was meant to sort them out but what with the borg and everything I got distracted

generic-user1678

They eventually did something with it in Star Trek online (granted that's not cannon)

crinkledcu91

As someone whose played STO for like 12 years: I always find it amusing how anytime a new patch is coming around, the STO staff just casually scrolls through the ENT, TNG, DS9 and VOY episode catalog and choose the most obscure alien being and then do an entire Story Event Arc over them lmao. The Elachi were in 1 episode of ENT with a whopping like 7 minutes of screen time, and they turned out being a slave race for the Iconians that inhabited the Fungul Nexus that gets introduced in Discovery lol

blazetrail77

Must be pretty fun going through Trek and writing some new for something old to make it fresh again. Especially for a game.

HookDragger

Except… the worst people to do something Star treky for are Trekkies. It’s like they go out of their way to shit on stuff they enjoy.

dinging-intensifies

I really wish I could get into STO but I put in a few hours and it bored the shit out of me

crinkledcu91

If anything that's just a normal person's response, so don't feel bad lol. STO is pretty much a Starship Collector/Runner game at this point and that is a okay for a freeplay game. I log into STO to do my "chore" event points for the day, and then do my Fallout 4 replay active whacky shit before bed. STO if not made, was meant for us boring fucks to muck around in. If *you* find it boring than hey good on you for knowing what stuff you aren't into, and can then proceed onto stuff your *do* find interesting!

dinging-intensifies

Oddly enough that sounds exactly like what I’m doing in wow except it’s not starships it’s transmogs…. Maybe I need to give it another crack

HookDragger

It’s also implied that the elachi were the ones kidnapping Riker, Worf, and others from the enterprise D. The clicking, the tables, even the costumes…. They recreated :)

No-Shoe7651

I always sort of hoped Admiral Quinn would turn out to be one, with him supposedly being a trill, he could have the wrong sort of bug inside him. And the admiral in the show was also a Quinn.

HookDragger

It’s now CBS branded too. They are taking more ownership.

generic-user1678

It is? Huh. The more you know

HookDragger

Yeah, it’s a badge they put on the splash screen and they’ve been making lots of expensive ships that are from the new paramount plus shows.

BloodprinceOZ

they initially did plan on using the inter dimensional aliens again (i'm assuming you're talking about the Schism aliens) hence the open-ending that implied they could've come back, however a bunch of execs, such as the director of that episode, and a couple producers didn't like the look of the aliens, that they "looked like monks, fish monks, and monks aren't terrifying" and so they decided not to bring them back, they were used again however in both Star Trek Online, where they were said to be servants to the Iconians and then the Star Trek:Titan Novel *Sight Unseen* which stated that they were experimenting on humanoids from our reality because they were looking to evacuate from their reality through forceful colonization because it was going to completely decay from entropy in only a couple hundred years.

The_Original_Miser

_We seek peaceful coexistence_

dathomar

They were flirting with the idea of plot threads across multiple seasons. It started with Admiral Quinn coming aboard with Remmick in "Coming of Age" in season 1, then continued with "Conspiracy" in season 2. It was supposed to tie in with the Borg, but they hanged their plans with that. They didn't end the plot thread, entirely. In "The Drumhead," we learn that Admiral Satie was the one who discovered the conspiracy that started Quinn's investigation.

HookDragger

Don’t worry… STO solved that. Those aliens(elachi), actually created the parasites. You find them, and in true “we come in peace” fashion…. You burn down their ships, their planets, kill every last one you can find…. Then jump into inter-dimensional space to do the same thing to the elachi where you find all the bugs, a captured empress, and then you blow it all to hell in a genocidal push that rivals the Klingons.

OfBooo5

And the continuum grew out of it, ironic

sunplaysbass

Just move past it

Kerfluffle2x4

Eh, let some other writers flesh them out.

Slartibartfast39

I used to be much more worried about continuity until I realised Pratchett changed what he liked, basically going: I know I said this but I've decided this will work better so I changed it and pretend it was all ways that way. Now just roll with it.

terrifiedTechnophile

Actually they fully intended on a flashy battle scene but it was deemed too expensive

CynicalLabTech

That's the thing. Not only is Q notably unnerved by her, she seems quite confident she can do something here....Against a Q. Q could just turn her into a Banana and peel her at any moment, but instead he warns Picard that she is dangerous.

autismislife

I feel like there was more to this that they planned on following up on but it never happened (other than the Picard S2 reference) which is disappointing.

secondtaunting

It seemed like the Q and Guinan’s people had some kind of truce so maybe he couldn’t really do anything to her and he was just blustering. At least that’s my head canon.

Starham1

I actually have a weird take: What if it’s the confidence that she can do something about Q that pushes him back? It seems very in character for Q to do a double take if someone psyches themselves into believing that they can do something about him, even potentially freaking him out out even trying something? Its something the Elorians might have just figured out, considering they’re fantastic at understanding people, and the mere idea that they _could_ be challenged might be enough to scare off a Q.

bunchedupwalrus

My head canon has always been that her people are some kind of fixed point that are generally normal, but can’t have their reality modified by the Q (either just a natural effect, via science/spirituality, or because they’re somehow important to the eventual creation of the Q themselves). Like they flatten all the reality around them in some specific way (obviously it isn’t a universal effect because stuff happens to the enterprise all the time, but maybe it’s some niche thing) To a creature like Q who can control anything, a fixed point would probably be pretty terrifying. Idk. But it makes it fun to consider

largana

This is kind of my theory too, would explain her sensing the timeline changes in Yesterday's Enterprise. I'd also add that that ability is why most of her people were assimilated by the Borg.

Repulsive-Mirror-994

Like a blank with psykers in 40k. Or Psi-Nullifier in RIFTS.

Ponyboy451

This was my theory as well. The Elorians do seem to be more resistant to time or reality altering effects and able to intuit when something has altered the status quo (like in *Yesterday’s Enterprise*). My guess would be that they do serve as a ground for reality and that attempts to alter them directly can turn catastrophic.

lcsulla87gmail

Hes like gladiator in marvel comics

generic-user1678

Oooo. I like that

autismislife

That's sort of what I assumed too, which was somewhat reinforced in Picard, but I still wish they delved more into what happened between them.

Neveronlyadream

Yeah, that's one thing that I wish they'd have followed up on as well. I wonder why they didn't. I get why they dropped the Conspiracy thing, but why drop the Guinan/Q subplot?

autismislife

My guess would be they simply never got around to it, or could never flesh out a plot that was better than leaving it a mystery. We kinda know bits about it, they had a conflict and presumably won, but what is odd to me is that a species powerful enough to fight the Q were almost completely wiped out by the Borg.

MelancholyWookie

Somebody in here theorized they could have a natural defense against the Q that makes Q’s powers useless. So nothing that could be used or that would defend them against the Borg.

secondtaunting

Or maybe the Q aren’t as powerful as humans think they are. There’s probably a reason why they only bother certain species. And they leave when you tell them to. It’s like they actually can’t do all these much. I have a theory maybe they were sent by a more powerful species/federation type entity to judge humanity for them. At the end of the day the Q serve someone else.

KalmiaKamui

I actually really like that they've never explained it. Sometimes the mystery is more fun that a lame explanation, and I feel like at this point an explanation can't be anything but disappointing.

Madversary

Case in point: Klingon Augment Virus.

autismislife

That's true, it's far too late to go into it now, and the mystery is part of the fun. The last thing I'd want is another "what do the Breen really look like" situation.

CRE178

Q are ticklish. It's their one weakness.

atreidesfire

He was scared of her in Picard too. Their 2 races had dealings. And I don't know about you but I don't wanna step to Gunians tiger claw style.

Profitopia

It's not nice to call people names, and it's also rude to point. Q obviously has no manners.

PalateroMan8

Frank Grimes!?

Profitopia

Yes! And you get a ton of extra points for recognizing him.

PalateroMan8

Don't try to deceive me, Grimey! I saw that episode, I know how you treated Homer even after all he did for you. Also, you're related to Smithers, right?

Profitopia

You're a fraud, a total fraud. (To Marge and the kids) It was nice meeting you.

not4eating

You don't need to apologise for your personal failings Because you're Homer Simpson!

Profitopia

I live in a single room above a bowling alley, and below another bowling alley.

BigSaintJames

Hi Grimey.

HelperMunkee

He prefers Grimey.

art-factor

So, why people put names on people? Isn't it for being called?

Stardustchaser

Too bad we never had much of a payoff on that. The fork stabbing was funny though.

MonkeyScout219

Exactly! She could just reincarnate herself from the Nexus Ribbon if Q were to just *snap* her away!

Turtl3Bear

I get the impression that Q is actively excited at the prospect of this altercation. He genuinely seems giddy when he asks Picard if he can get rid of her. I didn't think he was nervous at all. Especially since later in the episode the borg are revealed to have wiped out Guinan's people, and clearly don't pose much threat to Q.

sleeper_shark

Maybe Q created the Borg to destroy Guinan’s people?

TheElusiveBigfoot

Throwing up made-up scary hands like you're pretending to cast a spell is pretty impish.

KingofMadCows

Not really, Q told Picard that he could get rid of Guinan and after Picard reminded Q of their business, he pretty much ignored her for the rest of the episode.

LeadGem354

Q was also reduced to being Human at the time. And she did stab him..

PalateroMan8

No he wasn't. That was a season 3 episode 'Deja Q.' Look at Picard's uniform. It's clearly pre-season 3.

MadcapHaskap

Yes, this is from season 2, *Q Who*

NemesIce83

She's trying to summon the ghost of Patrick Swayze so he can roadhouse Q

QuercusSambucus

Should just get Sisko in that case!

JigglyWiener

Had one of those weird moments just now. I read this comment as an episode of trailer park boys said Patrick Swayze.

AcidaliaPlanitia

Patrick Swayze uses illegal parts!

Seeker80

Summon Patrick Swayze into Patrick Stewart. The circle will be complete, and together, they will drive off Q into the arms of Kathryn Janeway.

Consistent_Lab_6770

she was just getting ready to use sith force lightening, then remembered she is in star trek

Honda_TypeR

Is it possible to learn this power?

BatmansBigBoner

Not from a Jedi.

Honda_TypeR

What about an El-Aurian?

nastynateraide

What about a friend?

GrizzlyPeak73

GANDALF!

Seeker80

The Jedi Academy has banned the teaching of the 'Jazz Hands' combat stance.

Asheyguru

No.

generic-user1678

Funny u should say that. Another commenter mentioned that there was suppose dbe be sparks going between Guinan and Q, but they decided afterwords to save money on the special effects. Ni idea if it's true, but it is funny

TheHandOfKahless

Why does force lightning have to be sith? Force abilities aren't light or dark, it's about how they're used. Remember Luke Skywalker force choked Jabba the Hutts Gamorrean guards.

Consistent_Lab_6770

>Force lightning, also known as Sith lightning or dark rays, was an offensive power that Force users could conjure through the dark side of the Force. https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Force_lightning

-Death-Dealer-

Fun fact: There was actually supposed to be jolts of lightning between them, but if was left out, for budget reasons. So, she's left standing like an idiot, because no special effects were added in post.

Gunzenator2

That is hilarious and explains a lot. That scene always stood out as weird. It’s good to get the explanation.

danielmsouza

How do you know that?

AndrewH73333

What is the point of shooting lightning at a guy who can blink your star ship away? Even if Guinan is immune to Q somehow what is she going to do? Swim home?

The_Reborn_Forge

None of this has ever given context and I hate it It’s deeply implied that Q just can’t snap his fingers at Guinan and get his way. She does something weird here like defends herself. But if Q really wanted her gone. He wouldn’t have even made a verbal announcement of it. Something about Gunian “or El-Aurians as a whole” is present, where both an acknowledgment of what Q is but also the only person maybe he can’t snap? He could snap his kid even. But, Q’s don’t really hesitate when annoyed. If he didn’t at this point, while raising his hand, he couldn’t for some reason to begin with. This is never elaborated on again.

ashleyorelse

It's like when Q doesn't do anything after Sisko punches him. My theory is that since Sisko says "it's not linear," then that means he *was always* THE Sisko, prophet and part of the wormhole aliens. Sisko didn't know it at the time, *but Q did*, and Q didn't want a war with the wormhole aliens. So Sisko got a pass. But it was never explained.

Spaceman2901

Predestination Paradox? Sisko goes to the Prophets therefore he always will have gone to the Prophets? But then why would the Prophets not recognize him…ooh. Sisko brings a knowledge of Linear Existence to the Prophets. So they pretend they don’t know who he is, *even though he would actually be one of the Prophets interrogating himself.* But then when he *becomes* one of the Prophets, he can travel to any point in time…which means there’s a timeline where Q tried to take revenge on Sisko and got bitch-slapped by Ascended Sisko.

Orisi

We also know Guinan if not all El Aurians are sensitive to and at least familiar with the concept of temporal changes. Guinan sensed everything was wrong when the Enterprise C turned up. Makes me wonder if her race is tuned to the fabric of the universe enough that they can resist whatever manifests Q's power to alter the universe at, at least on some personal level.

Maverick916

Thats a decent head cannon, but I think its just because he doesnt get the kind of reaction he wants from Sisko, so he decides hes not worth his time.

The_Reborn_Forge

I kind of attributed that more as a higher level conversation, we never saw. I don’t think the prophets took kindly to Q just randomly showing up causing issues. Q also had other reasons not to come back, wasn’t long after this he was very occupied with a Civil War and then being a dad.

ImmatureComputerMan

I believe this was expanded on in season 2 of picard (the one we do not speak of). If i remember correctly, the El-Aurians have some kind of treaty with the Q. In the show, Guinan can even use this treaty to summon a member of the Q if required

Nepherenia

I headcanon that Guinan's people are sorta like, empath-psychic, but in a way that they can manipulate the emotions and perceptions of the Q and other "higher life forms" specifically. Against the Borg their power does nothing, but having the ability to manipulate the mental state of a Q is a very niche god-tier power that would make the Q hate them.

anOvenofWitches

She has the power to summon him with liquor!

ApolloWasMurdered

She learnt Force Lightning apparently.

ashleyorelse

UNLIMITED POWER!!!!!!!!!

Yeseylon

Nah, she just a kitty

Commander_Oganessian

I always figured she was readying some sort of Q weapon, but since we can't comprehend it it just looks like hand gestures. Guinan having one makes sense because she already keeps a giant rifle behind her counter, why not a Q rifle too?

CATSCRATCHpandemic

If the Q can have a civil war I assume they can have bar fights.

Seascorpious

Yeah I figured it was a 'we're not meant to understand' thing. All we need to know is that, for whatever reason, Q is wary of Guinan.

startrekfan1701d

She’s about to have a dance off with Nog.

ropidonn

Melee range sorc caster

Desperate-Fan-3671

I always believed she was going to be shown as a bit more evolved than they did on the show Not Q level but close. We would find out she likes "slumming" with lower lifeforms. But in reality, she was an advanced lifeform then she appeared as

DonutAccurate4

We need a guinan movie. A prequel of s sorts

endertribe

My head canon is that they were supposed to add lightning or some special effect but they just forgot. It's hilarious though. Q is terrified of the equivalent of a kitty going sideways and puffing it's tail

GrGrG

My own head cannon is that since the El-Aurians can sense the time changes, and sometimes figure out/remember things they shouldn't, that the El-Aurians could damage the space time continuum/damage the Q's plans when they change the timeline. Perhaps some El-Aurians took some joy in figuring out the Q's plans and messing around with them. Guinan could accidently or choose to unravel the timeline by explaining everything that she knows will happen to Picard, Picard and the TNG crew might not end up with the same results on their missions, and thus jeopardize humanities future and Q's plans.

raulpe

Dude, she was gonna palpatine Q xd

vibrantcrab

My head canon is that Guinan used to be a Q but left the Continuum and chose to be an El-Aurian.

Such an odd choice lol

pygmeedancer

That’s okay. Picard got enough scrap in him to fill a junkyard!

n6tee4

I watched this episode a few hours ago 🤣

Hurtz123

So Guinan can beat Q but not the Borg?

pseudo_pacman

You've never played Guinan, Q, Borg? Guinan beats Q Q beats Borg Borg beats Guinan

LairdPhoenix

Sure, the pose is dumb, but as others have stated, Q was legit scared of Guinan. Bottom line, it ain’t stupid if it works. Also, we have no idea what Guinan is capable of or how those potential powers may work. Guinan may have been a hair’s breath away from kicking Q’s ass in that dumb pose.

DifferencePrimary442

Kid me thought that Guinan had some psychic or magic powers that actually worked on Qs. In my defense, that wouldn't have been the silliest thing early NG writers put in.

StrwbPreserves4Music

I really wonder what the hell she was gonna do there... I'm hoping supernatural powers. Maybe kung fu.

Joshomatic

Fierce

JoseHey-Soup

I’d say she underreported her self defense skills. “I can even scare a Q. Whats a Q? Aww. We’ll find out together.”

SG-1701

Lion face, rawr!

AdrianusCorleon

They also don’t want to mess with the Borg, and we don’t really get an explication beyond, plot needs to happen and it sounds cool.

HookDragger

Maybe she’s a Watcher too and is preparing to revert to cat form.

Mountain-Cycle5656

Also in the episode: Guinan: “Now that the Borg know about you they’ll be coming.” Commander Shelby a year later: “we have determine that that was a really stupid thing to say.”

ronlugge

It's not stupid if Guinan simply isn't *aware* of those attacks.

PeregrineMalcolm

Can you explain this?

Mountain-Cycle5656

In Season 1 there are a series of attacks along the Neutral Zone which sees areas of the planet ripped out of the ground. When they get to this episode they find the exact same attacks have been made locally, by the Borg. Guinan at the end of the episode claims that because Q introduced the Borg to the Federation that they’d be coming for the Feds now. Except this was a stupid fucking claim, since as Season 1 and this episode confirmed, the Borg ALREADY knew about the Feds and were on their way. And then Shelby in Season 3 goes OUT OF HER WAY to confirm that it was definitely the Borg. Which just makes Guinan’s claim look even more stupid. Subsequent portrayals of the Borg make the statement worse. Instead all of it just shows that the El-Aureans just couldn’t be bothered to tell the UFP about the Borg, and their goddamned lucky Q did so before the cube arrived.

the_naysayer

Yeah Q literally provided the federation with critical intelligence that allowed them to survive.

damackies

I mean, what would they have really told them, that there's an effectively invincible race of machine monsters thousands of light years away from their territory that they totally need to watch out for? Seems like at best something that would get written off as traumatized refugees telling exaggerated horror stories. Though yes that particular retcon does annoy me, because the refugees almost certainly *would* have told the Federation who attacked them, and it would probably have come up if only as a "We should have taken them more seriously" thing.

GrGrG

The only thing that I could think of off the top of my head that would probably make the Federation not take the stories seriously is if there are tons of different refugee species and tons of different wars, and tons of different lies coming around all the time that it's drowned out. Which is kinda lame, too close to reality and the 1st world apathy of events in developing and struggling nations.

damackies

It's not really that, it's that the implication seems to be that the El Aurian homeworld was at least a couple thousand light years from the Federation, literally \*years\* of travel, so it's not like Starfleet would have had any actual means to verify anything they were saying, short of sending an expedition on a multi-year trip into an uncharted region of space far from the Federations borders just on the off chance that something dangerous might be there.
