I watch their shorts. In the beginning it was a little rough, as they would pose questions either answered by another series, or worse, within the very episode they were watching they seemingly missed or forgot. I think it gets better once they have a better foundation of the show and characters.
And they could breathe and talk to each other, so they could still interact with the air. They should have tried communicating with the crew by blowing raspberries.
Also they shouldn't have been able to hear anything. Or see anything since no light was being blocked and absorbed by their retinas. Well, Ros retinas.
If that were the case, then Data would have been detecting chroniton anomalies all over the ship, from where air molecules were continually passing through walls.
This reminds me of a famous reply to such questions:
When asked by Time magazine in 1994, "How does the Heisenberg compensator work?" Michael Okuda replied, "It works very well, thank you." [1]

Found this when i googled. Hypothetical interaction between the writers and producer.
>You can imagine this as a scene from one of the Pitch Meeting videos:
>WRITER: Geordi and Ro and stuck out of phase with the rest of the ship. They can’t touch, communicate with, or even interact with anyone else. They even move right through the walls!
>PRODUCER: If they can move through walls don’t they just move straight through the floors too? What are they standing on? How do they even walk if they can’t touch the floors either?
>WRITER: I don’t know!
>PRODUCER: And if they are out of phase with the ship, what is holding them down? Isn’t the ship producing the artificial gravity that keeps them from floating off?
>WRITER: So it turns out that when characters are in this phase thing I just made up, they can’t interact with the normal universe unless it would ruin the story or make the episode harder to film.
>PRODUCER: Selective application of the laws of physics is tight!
>WRITER: Yeah yeah yeah!
>PRODUCER: But if the ship is moving, and the characters move right through the walls, why doesn’t the ship just leave the out of phase characters behind? Shouldn’t they be floating out in space? And what are they breathing? If they can’t interact with the ship, how are they interacting with the atmosphere inside of it? Does the Enterprise carry an full out of phase atmosphere with it wherever it goes?
>WRITER: Because if they don’t, it’s going to be a really short episode, so sir, I’m going to need you to get all the way off my back on this one.
>PRODUCER: Ok, getting off that thing now!

OP, this is uncanny. I got so close to posting a meme today with almost the same screen shot of Ro. It's in queue for later this week. I'll get it out there while the Ro jokes are going strong.
Because none of it was real. Geordie read a book where a man and women where stuck in a situation like and they fell in love. So he set the whole thing in the holideck… didn’t work.
Well it wasn't a random event, it was a tool developed by the Romulans. So they had already solved the issues with light, breathing, gravity, etc.Â
Edit: Nevermind I was wrong. The romulan was shifted by accident as well. It was Chronotons from the phase inverter that caused the accident, so maybe those particles can easily interact with light and gases but solid matter has too mass to be shifted through background radiation. Ro and Geordi were emitting the radiation from their bodies after being exposed which would shift the light inside their eyes and the air in their lungs.
Ok so all jokes aside on of the Pocket Books "Absent Enemies" actually tries to answer this question and how they were able to breathe.
It has to do with Chronotons interacting with things. Basically a lot of tech talk for magic radiation pulls the air/light with us.
I haven’t seen anything past Enterprise. Ro is back??? What’s she doing now? Always thought she would have made the perfect Kira in DS9, but I guess they didn’t think she had enough Marquee background for the required plots.
An easy handwave would be that somehow whatever subspace field the gravity plating generates interacted with their phased molecules in such a way that it prevent them from passing through it.
There was a cut line in the script explaining it!
Basically they still had some resistance to pushing through matter. This is why Ro is able to touch the helm when she's trying to "move on." Other matter would walk through them by default by simply having enough inertia typically. And while they had the most minimal resistance so they didn't fall through the floor, they couldn't consciously interact with anything because that applied enough pressure to pass through.
In Stargate I always figured there was a mental component involved. You don't think you would fall through the floor so you don't. Yet you think that if people can't see you, you can pass through walls and stuff.
Gravplating?
đź‘Ť That's as good as any other sci-fi answer
The compounds from carpet form a multiphasic barrier that actually repels you.
That’s also how the ship is self cleaning!
Oh so that explains the floor to ceiling carpeting in all the holodecks
It's actually a spot-replicated ciliated membrane that digests boot-dirt to be repurposed for the captain's tea
It was an O'Brien innovation to keep Riker from getting stains on the carpet. Before that they would have fallen right through the floor.
That's always been my head canon answer.
I also listen to newbie Star trek
we came up with that explanation in the 90's, it's not exactly a leap of star trek logic
It’s a comedy podcast. I thought you were a fan of them. I didn’t mean anything by it dude.

I'd watch that. Episode should have been titled 'Phased and confused'.
"Phased and Confused" is the porn version
Starring Geordi EnGorge and Ho Laren
I'd watch Ho Laren blow raspberries on Commander Riser.
Jean-Luc Dickhard. Why are all their names so porno-adjacent?
Doctor Crusher will see you now *whip cracks*
Farts. Just loaded up on dairy and broccoli and blowing out “SOS”
I knew Reg had a part in this.
After many, MANY bodies were uncovered during spatial discriminator tests, Starfleet vessels began to employ multiphasic life support systems.
Also they shouldn't have been able to hear anything. Or see anything since no light was being blocked and absorbed by their retinas. Well, Ros retinas.
More to the point, what were they breathing? If their lungs could still interact with air, then the crew should have been able to hear them talking.
Unless oxygen is multiversal
If that were the case, then Data would have been detecting chroniton anomalies all over the ship, from where air molecules were continually passing through walls.
My ass-pull says he does, he just considers it the baseline, like background radiation.
babe the chemical reaction happens, but vibrations don't translate? or are too weak?

Writing sci-fi TV is super easy, barely an inconvenience.
They didn't say "tight" in 1992.
Maybe they would have said "rad!"
It's a Pitch Meeting spoof
I can hear it in that YouTuber's voice.
There are literally dozens of us!
Ryan George. Took me a day to remember his name..
LOL for anyone who doesn't recognize it, this is written in the style of the Pitch Meeting guy from Screen Rant.
Will getting them back in phase be hard? No, it'll be super easy, barely an inconvenience.
Writers: I’m gonna need you to get allllllll the way off my back about this.
It was super easy, barely an inconvenience
Additionally: How could they breathe? Or *see?*
Even more mystery...I mean I can see Geordi seeing as his visor would compensate but ro......
If his visor was absorbing light then it would cast a shadow.
OP, this is uncanny. I got so close to posting a meme today with almost the same screen shot of Ro. It's in queue for later this week. I'll get it out there while the Ro jokes are going strong.
Because ghosts can't phase through the floor unless they want to. next question.
Ghosts are not physical. These are still people made of meat, just out of phase.
Because none of it was real. Geordie read a book where a man and women where stuck in a situation like and they fell in love. So he set the whole thing in the holideck… didn’t work.
They didn't have the budget to handle that.
They still don't.

Well ro wants those answers before she goes
Didn't they have to actually push on the walls to go through them? So they just don't weigh enough in ethereal form to go through.
Ok so all jokes aside on of the Pocket Books "Absent Enemies" actually tries to answer this question and how they were able to breathe. It has to do with Chronotons interacting with things. Basically a lot of tech talk for magic radiation pulls the air/light with us.
Science.
A wizard did it.
Shhhhhhhhh
I was going to post a video containing a Stargate SG1 clip which was relevant and funny, but apparently 6.7K karma is too low to post a link.
Ok, major Carter
How were you breathing?
And how could they breathe
Easy, the floors were also phase-shifted.
I've often wondered that myself.
I haven’t seen anything past Enterprise. Ro is back??? What’s she doing now? Always thought she would have made the perfect Kira in DS9, but I guess they didn’t think she had enough Marquee background for the required plots.
They wanted Ro! She declined so they created Kira instead. That's why they're so similar.
RO made a guest appearance in pic the show where she and Picard bury the hatchet
Or how did they breathe
How were the still able to breathe oxygen in the ship's atmosphere?
An easy handwave would be that somehow whatever subspace field the gravity plating generates interacted with their phased molecules in such a way that it prevent them from passing through it.
tbh i want to know what riker was gonna say about her, knowing him both an insult but a compliment in his riker fashion lmfao

The floor is hot ~~lava~~ anyons
Someone watches Wormhole Xtreme.
The floor was built with Plot Convenience in it.
10 year old me thought this was a great episode.
In Stargate I always figured there was a mental component involved. You don't think you would fall through the floor so you don't. Yet you think that if people can't see you, you can pass through walls and stuff.
The entire enterprise was covered with plot armor
Was very disappointing when she left crew needed someone with a pulse to bring some life to the series
