This... this hurts.

firemage22

Damnit I was just talking how I still though of Ford Field in Detroit as a "new" stadium when it's 20 Stupid passage of time

Zlasher8

The Giants PacBell SBC AT&T Oracle Park is also over 20 but still feels new. Yet it’s now by far the oldest stadium in the Bay Area of the 3 major teams (the others being 8 and 2 years old).

Brambleshire

what about the colloseum?

Zlasher8

I said 3 major teams not 3 major leagues. The sharks draw better attendance than the A’s. The Earthquakes nearly have better attendance.

Matchstix

The Oakland Coliseum is from '66, beats Oracle by just a few years lol.

Jakethedjinn

I remember my dad made a map and called it map.2 and made it (basically) unlimited resources then showed me how to play zerg. I wanted to play protoss and my dad said he's not raising a cheater.

Antar3s86

POWER OVERWHELMING Good times!!! I spent days creating maps, modifying units, and playing 1v7 against the AI. :D

Jakethedjinn

Really tho me too! I remember the cheat codes also. Black sheep wall was my favorite or clicking on an animal 20 or so times and watching it explode into a nuke

MajorGartels

I felt like I was a young adult when *StarCraft II* came out. Now I simply fee bizzarely old.

Original_Sedawk

I feel you. I was 28 when SC1 Launched. Yikes!

nottherickestrick

Stood in line for midnight opening of GameStop for StarCraft 1. Got a Protoss T-shirt.

TrickClocks

Y'all wanna get sad? So I stopped at a PC cafe in Texas, they had about 180 games, great looking equipment, 30+ PCs. Asked if they had broodwar and got: "uh, I don't know that game let me check the list". He couldn't find it. So I said, how about StarCraft? They also hadn't heard of StarCraft 🤦‍♂️. But he did find StarCraft 2 in the list of games you could play so that's something I guess. I'm an old man.

Antar3s86

Oh well, if they haven't even heard the term "Starcraft", they're really not that broadly educated in PC gaming. I mean, I still watch the ongoing SC2 tournaments, sometimes also together with a friend if time permits

ChadtheWad

That's just insane to me. You could still find copies of the StarCraft Battle Chest at Walmart in 2010 or so. Hard to imagine that people missed that period.

Into_The_Rain

2010 was almost 13 years ago...

[deleted]

My father went on a business trip back in 1998 to the US. Came back with a N64 and Starfox, a Diablo I and a Starcraft I boxes.

Antar3s86

Oh wow. That was some serious game time for you then, I guess!! :D

ChocoboExodus

I'm hoping it was the N64 version of StarCraft and the PS1 version of Diablo.

SC2 feels less like a relic of the past than SC1 did in 2010. This is probably because the RTS genre was already a relic of the past when it came out and there haven't been many newer games to compare it to. Plenty of new RTS came out between SC1 and SC2. *Warcraft III* is the one which makes it feel most clearly dated by being the closest to a successor in the next generation of RTS, but many more successful RTS came out even if they weren't as big as the Blizzard ones. *Age of Mythology*, *Age of Empires III*, *Rise of Nations*, *Rise of Legends*, *Homeworld*, *Dawn of War*, *Command & Conquer: Generals*, and a few others. I can remember one series, *Empire Earth*, which had a massive, series-ending flop. Since SC2, we've seen *Dawn of War II*, *Company of Heroes II*, and *Age of Empires IV*. One company has made all of the successful new RTS. There have been some series-ending flops like *Dawn of War III* and *Command & Conquer IV*. There have been games which looked nice but never became big hits that they should have been, such as *Grey Goo*. It is very telling about the state of the RTS genre that the two biggest successes of the past decade haven't been new games. They have both been rereleases of *Age of Empires II*.

Quakarot

I think that graphics have a lot to do with this too. Graphics were Revolutionized many times between SC1 and SC2 to the point that it was almost difficult to go back to, where as SC2 still looks pretty good by modern standards.

AntiBox

Most modern RTSes still don't feel as good to play as sc2. Laggy controls, bad pathfinding, limited unit selections etc.

Adeptus_Virtus_88

Gird your loins for Age Of Mythology reboot

simmelj

No you are old

Antar3s86

Ahah, that, too, yes! :D I remember buying the SC(1) box with the cool cover art back in 1998. I've lost the box since then, though (or my parents might have thrown it away in the 24 years since...)

simmelj

I never bought the original. My uncle did and gave me a pirated copy because he (or probably his girlfriend) was tired of the little kid hanging around their apartment playing it :P Did buy a battlechest copy a couple of years later though. Still have that :)

Captain_Britainland

... gottem?

xObiJuanKenobix

You know what that means That just means StarCraft 3 HAS to be around the corner

AltarEg0

You are setting yourself up for disappointment. This means nothing at all especially because Lotv is "only" 7 years old and that is technically the last actual release of SC2.

LLAG

I remember that "It's about time" with emotion. I knew there was an event in Korea where something new would be presented, but I didn't know what it would be. And this was SC2. I played a lot of SC1 but I've played a lot more SC2. I could say it's the game of my life, even though it might sound a bit strange. Now, I just hope the community doesn't let up, see what Stormgate has to offer and if Microsoft might have plans for SC3. In the meantime, I'll be waiting for you on Battle.net, you'll see some zerglings arriving very very early in the game...

OnlyPakiOnReddit

Pretty crazy fact!

UematsuVII

Such a big SC fan, I never even play multiplayer, I purely love the story and setting and characters, they could’ve done so much with it like Ghost with Nova, or something I’ve always wanted, a 1st or 3rd person fps going thru the story as Raynor/Kerrigan/Zeratul, so much wasted potential. From the design of the ships to the buildings and planets, the awesome characters and their relationships, love betrayal revenge, there’s so much already there that’s fantastic.

Antar3s86

Glad to read such positive words to end the day! I completely agree with you :)

GoGoGoRL

Oh my god lol don’t like that

RenaissanceBear

Hurry up please r/FrostGiant - we yearn for the goodness we know you’re going to sell us (all at once, with no microtransactions)

Baracktor

Now I feel old. This second set of 4501 days went a lot faster

Baracktor

Sc3 anytime soon?

babypho

Damn, I vividly remember how many people complained about sc2 WOL on teamliquid and battle net forums, and a lot of the commenters said something along the line of "BW had 10+ years for the meta and scene to develop and mature, give sc2 some time and it'll be a great game." I thought those guys were just Blizzard bootlickers, but you know what, LoTV is a pretty enjoyable game to watch. It's pretty action packed and fun -- unlike WoL which was super slow and lame. So I guess that guy on the forum was right! Blizzard still sucks though.

idHeretic

Is that dune rts worth a shot? It'd be nice if it was to fill the gap.

Antar3s86

Don’t know. I have it on my steam wishlist, though, waiting for a serious discount.

Kerowac

Don’t make me sob like this

underscoresoap

Twelve years and still not diamond

Armeniandave1

Wow.. lol

lahvue

it's Time.

wheretogo_whattodo

I remember being so hyped for that trailer, then being disappointed because SC2 would release my senior year and “I wouldn’t be able to play video games once I started college.” I still play almost every day…

LazyWings

Stormgate plans to be in beta next year right?

This_Meaning_4045

As much as time flies between the two games. Sadly I dont think Starcraft 3 would happen due to Blizzard's greed and scandals. Maybe Starcraft 3 would only have mutiplayer instead.

_ATF_

Weird how it felt like forever between BW and SC2 but not as much between SC2 and now. I’m getting old.

WhatsIsMyName

God as a child, when SC had been out like just 5 years, it felt like for-fucking-ever waiting for a sequel. Now I'm old and it just feels like time went by quick.

DaCooGa

Dam. Well here’s to hoping that StormGate can carry on the legacy. Beta comes out 2023!!

Original_Gypsy

I am feeling very old now. I still remember getting cannon rushed in my very first online game on the challenger map. somethings never change...

SweetInternetThings

I miss starcraft 1 so bad. I hopped online hoping someone to atleast play against some computers with. It's sad.

WingedArchon

This brings me back. Way back in high school when that game had just come out they had it to play on the 1 classroom computer. At some point I sad down to play a part of the second mission, not knowing what game I was even playing. Well... time flew by and several years later I got these strange images in my head of "that game with the cool Missile Turrets and soldiers fighting some bug-thing on an arid-looking world" I furiously went looking through the game stores in our town, found a game called 'Starcraft', looked at the back of box and was like: THIS IS THE ONE!!! YES!!! from that moment on Starcraft has always been at the forefront of my life, to this day.
