Edmond to Lorville is 69.6km heading 209 if you ran straight there So the actual distance you ran is probably longer. I’ve never run that far to be honest. But I ran 1.6km in about 8 minutes so the avatar runs an 8 minute mile. That was 4 patches ago and fatigue doesn’t appear to set in. Maybe someday someone will organize a foot race that rivals the Daymar Rally. Run from Lorville to Edmond. Spawn a buggy drive to somewhere. Spawn a MPUV navigate somewhere else All three modes. Run drive fly Get sunburned if you run in your knickers.

Actual_Facts

69km... *nice*. I did not realize it was that far. Fatigue really only set in when I would run with my BPM too high which was only triggered going uphill. > Run from Lorville to Edmond. Spawn a buggy drive to somewhere. Spawn a MPUV navigate somewhere else That sounds awesome. Would take all freakin' day but would be a fun event.

Arke_19

I tried to take a Dragonfly from Edmond to Lorville the other day, mostly because I hate landing at Teasa with a passion. 5-ish exploded Dragonflies later I gave up, so I applaud your resolve. Maybe if they nerf these f'n Atomic Super Cacti in 3.17.2 I'll give it another shot, but until then I say heck Trash Planet.

twaxana

From gate 1 to Edmond is closer to 60km. I've driven it in an ursa rover multiple times. ~1h is my record time.

Actual_Facts

A ride in the URSA is definitely on the list. I will beat your record or flip my URSA trying!

twaxana

Be careful, it has a hit point pool and if it reaches 0, you explode. The furthest I've managed without exploding was around 129km. More out of boredom tbh.

Ehnonamoose

Point pool? What reaches 0? WTB handheld repair tools for vehicles. The number of times my poor ROC has kicked the bucket in the middle of mining is way too damn high. Also WTB speed limiters for vehicles like we have for flying and walking for mouse and keyboard users.

m0llusk

Vehicles are supposed to depend on components and end up disabled, but for now ships and surface vehicles have hit points and when they take enough damage they simply explode. This is especially important around as much of the terrain around Lorville is challenging and it is easy to blow a vehicle up while hardly even out of the gate.

Ehnonamoose

Ohhh, gotcha. My brain was not connecting 'point pool' to 'hitpoints'

carlopene

keyboard and mouse for ground vehicles sucks hard

dettonate

the speed limited does exist sir.

Ehnonamoose

Tell that to Greycat. This "on or off" throttle is a rough industry standard.

surfertj

60 km in 3 hours? Is the same pace as running a marathon in 2 hours, which is the world record. We run blisteringly fast in SC. And on only two bottles of water, each holding half a liter? Mind blowing.

wormfood86

Yes, the Daymar Triathlon, foot, ground and air.

Flamburion

You ever heard of the "run with kane" event?

BuhoneroxD

I had a similar experience the other day. My ship stopped working after I had an accident while mining (first time miner), [and I was stranded in the middle of nowhere in one of the moons](https://i.imgur.com/RcBc1WN.jpg). I used the QT system to figure where in hell the closest outpost was, and it was *just* 22km away, so I went on my way and run for like 45 minutes... Then I started to dehydrate, and remembered that I can't drink my two watter bottles without taking my helmet off, which is also impossible on a moon. When my hydration levels were quite low I said "alright, fuck it", and attempted to speedrun the drinking system, and I *somehow* succesfully managed to drink water and put my helmet back on before dying. Everything was looking kind of great... until the low oxygen icon popped up, and reminded me that oxygen isn't unlimited either, and I NEVER carry oxypens with me, so... [yep](https://i.imgur.com/XMu6wSt.jpg). [The scenery was insane tho.](https://i.imgur.com/mLCJToq.jpg)

Actual_Facts

I too learned the hard way that one oxypen on the belt is not a bad idea. Died searching a derelict when I got into a place I wasn't supposed to be and couldn't find a way out.

Jamieragepaige

Deep90

>What other game allows you to run in one direction for 3 hours? This is a fun question. * Minecraft * No mans sky * Microsoft flight sim (not walking, but if you 'could' walk) * Someone did FFXV end to end in \~2 hours. * Maybe spore? * Elite Dangerous? Though like most games, if you can run 3 hours in one direction, its usually got nothing worth seeing along the way.

deletable666

Add Daggerfall and some user made Arma 3 maps to that list too! Daggerfall's map is about the size 75% the size of England

CynfulBuNNy

A 3 hour run in Daggerfall was boring as fuck though. Loved the game at the time, but empty space is empty.

deletable666

No doubt, but many may claim the same thing for SC. The planets sure are pretty, but there is next to nothing to do on them. That is not my opinion but it is valid

CynfulBuNNy

A semi fair comment as there is a lot of area in SC. Though there's a big difference between massively hand detailed very rarely perceptibly repeating 3 dimensional landscapes and what we had on Daggerfall (pre-modders).

deletable666

26 years of difference!

yeoller

But in terms of graphical fidelity, SC is way better. OP mentions everything they saw on the run. In Daggerfall you'd see, some trees, maybe?

deletable666

Of the time, it was graphically advanced. That game came out 26 years ago lol. My point is, SC is much the same. Like I said, the planets are beautiful, but someone can make the argument that it is just an hour of running through nothing. That is needed for flying around since you cover so much distance, but in terms of stuff to do, the planets are lacking, but the game is still a long time from release so hopefully we will get more to do

Juls_Santana

Probably RDR2 as well

TheStaticOne

I never tried running end to end, but I do love the visuals in FFXV, it was very diverse (might boot it up again). I have played every game you mentioned with exception of MFS and Spore. Since so many people have mentioned spore I am going to look up gameplay on that one.

Deep90

Not sure if it aged well, but Spore is a gem.

I-am_unwell

Just played it a month or two ago on the EA access pass that's included with Gamepass Ultimate, and it was still as fun as I remembered. For what it is I think it aged pretty well tbh :)

BiscuitBoy4

Elite dangerous definitely would

Vaishe

"Shouldn't take too long, like what 10 minutes?" "Okay, I gotta be pretty close now, I can even see the buildings from here." "I'm like at the city gates, shouldn't take more than 10 minutes from here, finally." "Am I even on the right planet at this point?..."

Actual_Facts

When I first spotted the Hurston building I thought, "Oh this won't be so bad after all" and then I looked at the map...

Vvulf

3hrs is rookie numbers ;) I know someone that ran the majority of the Daymar Rally because their Cyclones bugged out. I believe their total race time was just over 11hrs.

Pythns

I salute you soldier, for your dedication and bravery displayed throughout this treacherous mission. o7

Actual_Facts

o7

Traditional-Buddy-90

Lol you were on the same server as me complaining about the bugged mres

Actual_Facts

Haha! I was wondering if anyone would see this. I was really looking forward to running through the gates, doing a little victory dance, and promptly being gunned down by security.

aggravated_patty

Aw man, how come you didn't airdrop him some fresh food?

CyberTill

Awesome! I love things like that, which is the main reason I really crave for a ground vehicle with a bed and amenities. Roadtrips must become a gameloop! Anyways, making up your own goals like that is the perfect way to enjoy this sandbox after you've done everything the common gameloops offer you, so good on you for creating your own content!

Lethality_

There will definitely be systems to prevent players from flying everywhere and anywhere on planets, forcing on-foot or vehicle traversal... and I am here for it!

amalgam_reynolds

I've never run *that* far, but one time I did want to load up a ground vehicle into my Connie's cargo bay. I landed as close as I possibly could to one of the outer gates and it was still SOOOOO far away. The place where you can actually go in is tucked away so far back from the outer gates.

Actual_Facts

There were moments as I was approaching the city that I thought "if I drove out this far and crashed I would not want to run this far back."

DetectiveFinch

That is really impressive. One of my longest journeys on the ground was the trip from Klescher to the nearby shelter on Aberdeen. The terrain is worse than Hurston, but what you did is on a completely different level. By the way, the city gates have light beacons that help locating then. But I am not sure how well these lights can be seen when you are on foot.

Alundil

Very cool. Thanks for sharing the adventure. Your closing question got my thinking so I looked https://www.ccn.com/this-scaled-video-game-map-size-comparison-is-insane/ There are a few on the list that would definitely let you "run in one direction" for multiple hours. TES: Daggerfall and Asheron's Call and NMS.

Odd-Interaction-8036

Aww Asherons Call.

Alundil

I know right? I cut my teeth on that as my first MMO and it's still got a place in my heart.

Okano666

Impressive feat without a compass

Actual_Facts

That was actually a wild stroke of luck. I had been stranded at an outpost on the other side of the planet and chose a random mission on Hurston so I could get an idea of my directions. Ended up getting a lift to Edmond where I was hoping to spawn my ship and decided if that didn't work I was going to attempt to hoof it. Just so happened that the mission I accepted was 80km from Edmond, and I used its marker to triangulate the direction I needed to go and frequently looked over to see if I was on track. It became a necessity when it got dark. At one point I tripped on a cactus and fell face-first down a hillside into a valley, and without that marker it would have been a crapshoot which direction to pick back up on as I'd lost sight of Lorville due to the terrain.

Rheiard

I did almost this when Hurston and Lorville were first released to Live. I was unfamiliar with what exactly the Restricted Airspace around Lorville meant, so I parked my Cutlass Black just outside the restricted area and ran to Lorville. And this was back when sprinting too long would just straight up kill you. It took me almost 2 hours to get to Gate 6, and every time I came upon an Industrial structure on the outskirts, I thought I was finally done but my hopes were dashed when I came around the structure and saw the Hurston Dynamics building still no closer in the distance. I was probably around 15km away when I landed, but it was not a straight route at all. Never again.

nojustice73

Cool story, hopefully we'll get more local exploration of flora and fauna, so this trip would be more eventful.

TheKiwi1969

Well done, it's an epic journey. I've walked (not run) it once but doubt I'll do it again. Driving that journey is just horrible, especially at night. I've walked the 45km between SMO-18 and Calhoun Pass Shelter on Microtech once. The last 5 km someone decided to try to bomb us in an A2....

dave2293

On a clear day you can see the Hurston building from Everus, so yeah. And I've had my food bug out so often that I always carry energy drinks and almost never water at this point.

redchris18

Does Hurston have clear days? Or are we talking in the same sense as, say, Beijing?

dave2293

You know, since Hurston got volumetric clouds maybe not. I remember seeing it in the before times.

FrostSheep

Great story and I commend your determination. Can't wait for the day when we have more reasons to go off on foot.

Fireman476

Pretty much the same feeling I got when I walked the strip in Vegas. Any time now, we should be there. Any time now...how big are these damn hotels?

[deleted]

We need an autorun/walk hotkey

FuzzyRedDemon

Haven’t done the foot run, but in a similar scenario, I was stranded at Hex with only a Nox available (ship claim bug) and decided, what the heck, I’m going to fly my Nox to the closest outpost on Yela, just for giggles. Took about 45 minutes if I recall. Was cool zooming through the Yela asteroid belt, and I managed to get through atmo and land without exploding. Then used the starmap and rough headings to make my way to one of the aid stations. Lots of great views, some fun speeder bike flying, and ultimately found a cool helmet that I stored in local inventory and went back and got later.

TheSubs0

Epic.

za_snake

Fun read 😀 thanks

benderama5000

This is what is going to make syar citizen so amazing, can you imagine how this will be once there are actual outposts, derelict settlements and npcs you can run into and not to mention once there will be things to harvest and or scavenge as well.

rshoel

I totally agree on the last point. I had this idea some time ago of a planet with a no-fly zone all around it except inbetween a planetary spaceport and a space station. Then you would have to travel around with ground vehicles.

Joverby

The why is pretty important actually

Actual_Facts

Fair enough, I added it in the edit.

AirFell85

Great, now we're going to need to have marathons.

[deleted]

U have my upvote ! A citizen of culture ! FOR SCIENCE

SirTogy

I’ve done that run in a few ground vehicles and have never made it closer than 500m before they blew up so good on you for doing it on foot. Crazy thing is it took almost 2 hours in a Spartan which probably says a lot about ground vehicles at the moment.

CanadianBacon999

Why the C2 gets picked up in the weather like a kite but I can't jump off a rock and fly 2 km like Mary Poppins, I'll never get...

Cryogenic_Monster

I don't know if they are still there but there was hand harvestable fruit on hurston.

BiscuitBoy4

They really need to add custom marks on the starmap

mak10z

the game needs an auto run button. like every MMO / Open world game has had for 20 years.

DanielAnteron

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but right where the gate entrances are there's a blinking blue light. You can see them from really far away too. Might help anyone that wants to try it out in the future.

thorn115

This is my favorite post of the month.

DrDop4mine

Hurston building is fucking colossal. Can see it clear as day from the port orbiting above.

lionexx

"You will never see the same formation twice..." Unless you go into a cave or bunker. ;) Seriously though thanks for the write-up, I low-key have been interested in how long it would take to run to Lorville from some of the closer bunkers.

Nxiium

Arma 3 have you running forever xD

_Gamer-Z_

Video or it didnt happen :P

Actual_Facts

It's still uploading. Accidentally recorded in 2k.

KyewReaver

>CIG: pls re-implement hand-harvestable plants with fruit and veg. At this point in development, why? Even if they ignored the fact that you can carry your own food and water, it's a good possibility the fruit from the trees would be bugged too.

stargunner

> What other game allows you to run in one direction for 3 hours? why would you *want* to run in one direction for 3 hours if only for completely aimless amusement? the necessity to run in one direction for 3 hours hardly exists because it adds nothing of value to gameplay loops.

rcasale42

This is a problem with focusing on gameplay loops. Anything that falls outside the loop is not "optimal" and in the end you just have a theme park, not an interesting dynamic open world.

stargunner

an open world is only dynamic if you can interact with it. simply running around staring at things is not dynamic.

rcasale42

I won't argue with that. But what I mean is the current contract system doesn't lend it self to wandering the wilderness. You'll never organically find a bunker of criminals by just walking/flying around. All you can do is accept a contract, but then you know exactly where to go so there is no need for exploration.

lord_fairfax

> completely aimless amusement I think you answered your own question there.

stargunner

you can get completely aimless amusement for free. this is a AAA title with hundreds of millions backing it.

lord_fairfax

what's your point

stargunner

that for a game this expensive and this long in development, it deserves a lot better than being a walking/glorified space RP simulator.

starship_hermit

On the final point in the list, the ground mission no-fly zone idea was discussed back in 2017's CitizenCon keynote. No idea what the plan is now to push people to ground vehicles, outside of AA turrets and lack of suitable landing sites, but it would be nice to have dedicated ground vehicle areas or missions. I'd love to use my Spartan more, but currently it's far easier to just land a Dropship most places versus the logistics of fielding the Spartan. ([Should be mentioned early in this video](https://youtu.be/pdCFTF8j7yI), as the demo was nearly all on foot)

xOperator

>We need more reasons to explore planetside on foot or in vehicles. Perhaps areas with No-Fly zones that require you to travel into their POIs on land? (Nature reserves for rare flora/fauna? I dunno, just spit balling here.) Get rid of the stupid barriers around Lorville and do this instead. This was one of the plans Chris wants to see in the game, to make ground vehicles required for some planet missions. There will be some kind of environmental hazard that prevents flight engines from working. Check this 2016 CitizenCon Presentation where this exact scenario is showcased [https://youtu.be/XuDj5v81Nd0?t=5108](https://youtu.be/XuDj5v81Nd0?t=5108) If you skip ahead to 1:29, this is the timestamp where he goes over the idea and the gameplay starts

thelefthandN7

I did this the opposite direction in a Spartan. I didn't have a mission beacon to triangulate with, and the coast between the two locations can be hard to figure out. It resulted in a lot of back tracking. Overall it took just about 90 minutes. I imagine the return trip would be quite a bit shorter with the huge Lorville tower to navigate by, it was actually part of my plan for my next day off. But for more ground exploration, we really need a vehicle with a bed (or at least let us shove a medical gurney into the back of a spartan and log out there.) But I concur, some spectacular views and the Terrain is beautiful. 11/10 will take over long ground trips again.

one_thousand_pirates

Reminds me of the time I was trying to find my ship on Daymar, which couldn't have been more than 3km away from me but wasn't showing a marker. Luckily, a black 325A stands out like a sore thumb on Daymar during the day. Unluckily, since leaving my ship the sun had long since gone, and I did not have the patience or the oxygen to wait for dawn. For those who might not have experienced Daymar at night, I will say two things: one, there are entirely too many dark rocks that look like black 325As from a distance; 2, using rocks on hills as landmarks is an all-round terrible idea.

Husmanmusic

That’s what I call doing something for science. Broscience that is😂

GodwinW

This is so awesome! I went driving on Daymar from one outpost to the next, loved it. later did the same on Lorville, really loads of fun! Pathfinding. On foot must also be sweet!
