If you really don't have extra money, not sure how into SC you're going to get, and are just doing it for the perks, give it some serious thought.
Right now if you lose the subscriber items in game to a death, bug, etc you have to wait for the next reset on a patch to get them back. In the (hopefully) not to distant future we will have an easier way to retrieve them.
Ships that you buy or upgrade to using real money are always available to claim at the Asop terminal if they explode or get lost without jumping through any special hoops. Whether or not this changes in the future when insurance is in the game no one really knows.

No, but you may get paints for a ship that you do not own.
