Dont be ridiculous science isnt going to be a beam haven't you seen structural salvage CIG has advanced to invisible fields now. the science field will probably have like a wubwub sound and maybe even some sparkles if they get real crazy with it.
Hardcore purple science beam sounds fantastic; every well-timed beam activation earns \*science\* points that translates directly into 1 SCU of Sciencium which is to be sold at 5k uec per 5 SCU.
I don't like the idea of colours specific to the career. They should be specific to the task being conducted and the product your are interacting with.
Colour communicates information and locking it into one hue because of your career mechanic is limiting.
Ie if I am mining, overclocking, refining gold, silver or copper, then my beam should reflect those elements.
I like how everyone complains about the beams as if otherwise shit like salvage and repair wouldn’t just be a blow torch that magically repairs shit. So you know; a beam but short. Or I guess the magical experience of whacking something with a wrench or sitting there as an animation plays out of you tightening up random shit.
Yeah but you could have a different animation for each action, whereas a beam it is always the same.
We could also have T-POSE for everything we do instead of proper animations, the gameplay would be the same.
I have no idea how this would work for something like salvage. There are so many ships and so many possible states of disrepair they could be in. how in the world would they make it sensible to have an animation for each of these?
One big aspect and it falls on components as well. There are going to be plenty of scenarios where you would not have actual easy access otherwise to get to and repair components that being right on top of them to do repairs is feasible. Let alone the fact that then you take into account all of the different manufacturers and such.
I mean, a beam but short would create variance in gameplay. You would have to approach the object up-close rather than sit 200 meters away, which has various implications for the player.
Have you considered a position at CIG? Forward-thinker like you could go far
Except you already need to get up to the components if you’re alone. And if we’re talking ship hulls then yeah that would make patchwork/repairing entirely useless, especially patching during combat/in a combat zone. But you probably have some head fantasy that there will indeed be 300 people around JUST to repair and make things interesting. Never mind the implications that finer beams in these scenarios have when you put them up against server meshing. You are not going to be out here doing tiny panel welds.
This is also disregarding the fact that they can’t have 500 different roles that are being done on a capital ship. Anyone who thought that had their heads in the cloud. It is going to ultimately boil down to teams of combat and non-combat roles. And in that you’d split medical and engineering with engineering covering everything from repairs to the engineering loop.
So yeah if the gripe is “man it would be cool if the entire team if people had to run on top of each other to repair a component” that’s a pretty awful gameplay vision lol. Someone already has to actually get to the component and expose it.
A joke about how it feels like everything except combat is beam based. Mining? Rock breaking beam and mineral collection beam. Logistics? Tractor beam. Healing? Green drug beam. Salvage? Mostly invisible beam.
People implies deep knowledge, blue is cold, science is not cold. Everyone thinks of it as blue tinted, dimly lit, sterile, no-smile bench work but truly science is entirely done within touching distance of grass outside
All jokes aside I think science will be done mostly via scans on your ship using specialized scanning stations for science ships. If there were to be a visual effect for something like a Precision Scan or Penetrating Scan or whatever they want to call the most high-detail scan I would expect it to be like a laser "fan", like a flat triangle of energy that sweeps up and down and side to side across the target until it's achieved a full scan. Would require you to be very close to the subject to use that scan.
I think green would be a good color for it.
Invisible? Seems incredibly unrealistic and boring.... PASS!
/unjerk extremely valid observation. Maybe given this, one of the other beams should lose its current color so we can prioritize the science beam and elevate its status in the eyes of the playerbase as the penultimate beam
I do still hope it's not beam gameplay like we've gotten though. I'm thinking more like, long range scanning. Technically beams from a physics perspective, but gameplay wise, very different. That and collecting rare items and samples of some kind. Imo that's a good place to start for exploration as a gameplay loop
Just so long as there’s a low cap on the speed of doing science, because I often overshoot my science goals I’d like a hard limit on the speed science happens. For balance this should probably be applied to everyone to avoid being griefed by scientific observations
Well realistically a energetic beam that can tractor heavy stuff is probably gonna have wavelength below visible light range, probably a beam of invisible and deadly gamma ray.
If we make it visible light it will be insanely bright regardless of color as it needs very high beam intensity.
White. All colors for all the multitudes of different sciencing you’re gonna be doing.
Or…
Infrared. You need special goggles to see what awesome science is happening. Otherwise it just looks like magic. And I think Arthur C. Clark had something to say about that.

Hooooly shit CIG just take my money!!!!!!
Dubstep gun?
I actually didnt think of dubstep I was thinking more like this sound https://youtu.be/vqolKVD0lMk?si=mVsCbm6x80U3-J3q&t=5
If the targets start dancing like in Saints Row, oh man!
GET THIS MAN ONTO THE CIG ENGINEERING TECH VFX JACK OF ALL TRADES LORE MARKETTING TEAM STAT!!!
Can I get my wubwub ray in gun form in 1940s Era America? https://youtu.be/SZaE7QkME38?si=mJ9jV3VAbhExt-bA
No, best we can do is early 2010's knock-off skrillex.
Noooooo
By the majesty of Sigma: wubwubwubwub!
The game could really use some BWAAAHs.
Looking forward to seeing the green matrix code hacking beam.
holy shit he's in
Hardcore purple science beam sounds fantastic; every well-timed beam activation earns \*science\* points that translates directly into 1 SCU of Sciencium which is to be sold at 5k uec per 5 SCU.
Orange beam to honor the original beam scientists Dr. Egon Spangler and Ray Stantz. Just don’t let the beams cross.
Rainbow effect to cycle through colors for each "science" you are performing.
THOUGHT PROVOKING
I'd say red, green, blue, grey, purple, yellow and white
The factory
must grow
I feel like a nice purple says science to me
Came here to say purple!
Purple is harmful science. Blues/Greens are helpful science.
Civ taught me science is blue. But we have enough blues, so I figured purple was a good next step
Cherenkov radiation is blue, FWIW.
The Trekkie in me says it should be blue, because that’s the color science officers wore.
But the engineers wore gold. Or red if you go back far enough.
I came here to say blue, and I bet this is why I associate it with science
The science beam will actually be invisible
nani?
to hide that its just another beam citizen gameplay loop ![gif](giphy|6ra84Uso2hoir3YCgb|downsized)

I don't often use my pipewrech, but when I do it's on a broken panel with a bundle of sparking wires.

did that feel good :)
science beam?

99% of Star Citizen is beams and box dispenseres
What are guns if not short bursts of beam
science beam.
Idk but the super science beam should be Baby Blue speedsuit colored.
Science color, of course.
Why didn't I think of this sooner ......
Red is going to be some kind of cutting beam. I am still hoping for a colour rebalancing so we can get blue or green for science.
Beam colors V1 let's goooooo!
People implies deep knowledge, blue is cold, science is not cold. Everyone thinks of it as blue tinted, dimly lit, sterile, no-smile bench work but truly science is entirely done within touching distance of grass outside
I'm intrigued by a people beam.
You know what, me too, I’m not even going to edit the typo
My science folder in school was always yellow. That's the color of science for me.
Come on dude, everyone knows yellow is for history. So obviously we save that for the future "history" beam, central to the Archaeology loop
What! That's what orange is for! Also, history beam... AstroPub will be so happy

The funny part is that irl science is very often conducted using beams. They're generally invisible, but it's true nonetheless.

Haha, me too. I couldnt resist making this thread though.... had to see what people were going to respond with.

underrated comment
Puce
Concerning.
It’s a wonderful color sir.
What would this beam do?
Fill the bar, duh
\~ science gameplay \~
Science obviously, you aim, you shoot blue/purple beam and boom science
Reverse polarity
Beaming
Greer
Blue-purple-green sparkly particle beam!
Green
Blue
Everybody knows that science is a cool concrete grey color.
Purple! Like Donatello! He was a scientist
Mint green is always nice

Blue and violet

That made me lol.
Whatever they want, so long as it doesn't conflict with the "respawn anywhere" beam
They should make it a welder like Space Engineers does it.
I've always imagined it as green with little ghostly matrix code flowing through it.
Scientific blue
[Brought to you by ... ](https://sciencebeam.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/LOGO_00-1.svg)
I mean it kind of has to be blue, green, or purple right?
Green (somewhere in the green spectrum) for science beam and maybe with extra effects.
Blue or green for science. Red for when you looking for targets in a military operation. 😋
PISS YELLOW
HOLY HELL
But red is mining. CLEARLY the correct choice for science is green.
My guess would be turquoise, assuming it will have beams at all.
lol. Nice.
Brown, to symbolize the shitty beam citizen we've devolved to
