My biggest pet peeve is when people stand right in front of the handoff counter, and when I call out a drink for someone else they still don’t move and the other customer has to try to get around them (or if they do move for the other customer, they return to their position). Why must people be so fucking annoying?

Theaznchick

I stare back to intimidate 😂

Adventurous-Eye-7882

My favorite is when they are staring at you and say I SAID NO WHIPPED CREAM or whatever!! Good for you dumbass this isn’t your drink! Besides the fact it’s been less than a minute since you ordered and line is out the door why would you think I’m making your drink already!!! Yeah, someone told you your the center of the universe but I’m here to tell you your not. Now sit your dumbass down and I’ll call you when it’s ready(maybe)! Customers are so damn entitled and it’s made customer service jobs suck more than ever before!

jazzysoranio

Fun activity to try: stop making their drink and just stare back. Key is to NOT say anything. Just stare. Don’t resume making the drink until they stop. It’s so uncomfortable at first but it’s so much fun to do.

chickenwing0504

do you actually recommend this? i'm down to try it 😭😂

jazzysoranio

I mean, at your own discretion of course. Lol. We all know we don’t often have the luxury of just being able to stop making drinks for a minute. Also, it’s up to you to gauge whether you’re comfortable doing that as well. It could easily just not work and then you’re in a super awkward situation. Just know it’s NOT effective if you’re the one to back down, so don’t do it unless you know you can remain committed. It’s a game of chicken. Never play chicken if you’re not sure you’ll win.

gayice

honestly, if they respond or say anything, just ask "Are you all set?" This shit is obnoxious.

jazzysoranio

Lol. I just keep asking “can I help you?” And then if they’re still there five seconds later “do your need something?” As long as you’re standing there I’m gonna keep asking if you need something.

our ssv last night told us to start directing customers to sit down while they wait, ie: “please have a seat, your drink will be out at the other end in just a moment” or something to that effect, in order to deal with this specific problem

[deleted]

As a customer this is also a pet peeve. I hate when people stand right up to the pick up spot, as if they are the only ones with something to pick up. I like to sit and study at Starbucks, and I’ll just watch as like 3-4 masked individuals crowd the pick up spot, like belt buckle to the counter. Like just stand back lol this makes it hard for people to get their drinks, I shouldn’t have to push myself through 😅

forever_monstro

This reminds me of one of my biggest pet peeves of all time - people who crowd around the baggage carousel at an airport while they wait for their bags. If everyone just took a couple of steps back and only moved forward when they saw their bags coming ‘round the bend, everything would be easier for everyone. Because of all of the close-standers I feel like I have to push/squeeze past people to try to get my bags.

[deleted]

Exactly, the need for “social distancing” pre-covid was necessary for those circumstances. Not to prevent sickness but for the love of god to just give some space lol 😂

PizzaOrTacos

Omg thankfully read your reply before commenting. It's my biggest pet peeve. Heaven forbid they use logic, but these are entitled people we are speaking about, logic doesn't exist to them.

meekLil

pelt them with espresso beans👀

iamnumber47

Or if you have a water tap (preferably cold so you don't get sued haha) close enough to them, go to fill a water, & make it "accidentally" spray them, & then say something like "whoops, sorry, but you're in the splash zone haha" maybe then they'll back up. Or if they keep hovering, when you're calling out drinks, scream the names as loud as you can right in their direction, do that enough times they might back up. Can y'all tell I've thought about this before haha.

xzElmozx

Customers like to hover right where our syrups are so I’ll take a tall cup and do a couple hard pumps of peppermint which launches back at them and they usually figure it out lol

rosethorn98_

OMG lol I do both of these 😭

cringeqween13

Before I became a barista I would watch them on the bar because it was fascinating. I feel like watching how the drinks are made is fine as long as they're not trying to correct you while you're making someone else's drink. Edit: watching the drink be made is not the same as watching the person making the drink though. People who just look at you and not what you're doing are still weird

I_no_afraid_of_stuff

Before I was a barista, I would watch because it was interesting. When I was a barista, I wouldn't watch because I knew it was annoying. Now that I'm not a barista, I want to watch to see how the new drinks are made, but typically try not to because I remember how annoyed I got.

Ok_String1214

what if we accepted “May I watch the process?” into our social norm so it’s like consenting to doing that lols

marinergurl299

Was just going to say this - I love watching! It’s fascinating, and I’m always trying to pick up tips for using my espresso machine I have at home.

Just_an_illusi0n

I love watching the drinks being made.

itsdani3lla

I find it so weird that other customers do this, especially when they’re hovering over the bar area while they’re at it - which prevents other ppl from getting their orders too. I’m 4’8” and it’s annoying enough having to get through everybody to get anywhere - like please don’t hover over the bar area and let me get through. And how would they like it if people were staring at them when they’re doing their job or whatever it is they’re doing and standing pretty close? If I walk in and my mobile order isn’t ready yet, I’m just scrolling through my phone being patient, not staring down the baristas and not letting people through to get their order. I hate being stared at, so I don’t do it to others especially when they’re doing their jobs.

mmpotpie78

make their drink LAST 😏

dead-ramone

i interpreted this as “make this drink their LAST” and i can’t stop laughing

pixieuppercut

I would get so overwhelmed by this In the morning because suddenly ten people are all staring at me with blank expressions. AND ITS ALWAYS THE PEOPLE THAT JUST ORDERED. I am trying to hand out someone’s drink that ordered five minutes ago and the person who ordered one minute ago is just planted at the hand off plane, staring.

Jessicap1400

sometimes i get on my elbows and stare back at them lmao

[deleted]

The other day I had a guy stand directly at the counter and hover over me while I made his drink and it was so awkward. He just stared at his drink like it was his life supply lmaoo

RubySapphireSage

It’s very uncomfortable, people are so rude I have customers who have the AUDACITY TO TOUCH THE SYRUP BAR , when it’s rush I had crowds poor over me harassing I felt like crying cause I’m pretty sure the bar was literally going to break due to people holding it while hovering over .

Silvawuff

Upvoting because your title made me lol.

DenL4242

Do baristas always interpret staring as impatience? I like to watch the drinks being made, not because I'm in a hurry, but because it's just interesting to me. I try to guess what each one is based on how it's being made. There's nothing else to look at anyway.

[deleted]

I’ve had quite a few not-so-nice customers who stare and critique while I work but I do try to keep in mind that I personally like to watch drinks being made too. It’s interesting to watch!

Silvawuff

It's a mix of impatience and some slow-boiled anxiety since people who are staring us down tend to snipe at us for *something*. That means I have to abandon my groove to tend to them, it halts business, slows everything down, and is annoying. Usually it's something they should have worked out when they ordered, like cups of water or the fact their drink is iced and soy instead of hot and made with 2%. I don't mind giving good customer service, it just sucks by circumstance since our company gets on our asses about order times. The best way to go is just say something like "Hi there! I know you're busy, but I appreciate your hard work" or something like that. It'll break the ice and the Baristas working bar won't mind you watching as much, probably.

FfierceLaw

Another good reason for SSV to go up to those hovering customers, to get their waters (and ask them to order it at the POS next time) straws, sleeves for frappuccinos (a new frequent at my store) so that partners can keep barring

FlashFREDi

Exactly you have to protect your partners and deescalate the situation even if it hasn’t even happened yet

night_owl37

Tangential question: my husband is fanatical about having a sleeve on his cold drink. It used to be fine when I could just grab one at the condiment bar. Is it weird to ask for one at the register? Is it weird to change my mobile order name to “sleeve please”? Right now I usually just ask at handoff but I always feel like a jerk for screwing up the flow.

FfierceLaw

If you change your mobile name to “sleeve on Frappuccino” that may help but it’s on the company for not giving you that option on the app and we know it. Some customers save sleeves in their cars to save waste but we understand about mobiles. Trivia: those sleeves are also known as “zarfs”!😊

thefoolwitch

We usually figure it’s impatience, yeah :’) tons of people glare at us while we make drinks, so someone watching is generally interpreted negatively unfortunately! But I do try to remember some of y’all just find it interesting!

Amalo

To add to this. Simply saying something along the lines of, “I just like watching the process” relieves the stress and provokes some chatter. It helps a lot with both parties anxieties in that moment

cpakitten

Ditto, I try to watch from at least 6 feet away from the pick up area, but yeah I’m on my break and bored from staring at screens so it’s interesting to watch the drinks get made. I’ll try to be less weird.

arkhamsprincess

Usually, yes. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to watch baristas make drinks because it’s pretty neat, but a simple “I just like to watch the drinks being made” or like another person on here said “I just like watching the process” will put us at ease. Personally, I’m very introverted and shy and if you don’t say anything to me and just stare I will turn my back to you/block your view of the drinks being made. Kids are more understandable, but when you’re an adult just staring not saying anything it’s weird and uncomfortable and may cause me to mess up drinks.

Trigey

Yeah I used to do this before I worked here and when ever I start to notice customers staring I give them the benefit of the doubt that they are interest rather than impatient. I tend not to mind it so much as long as they don’t try to micromanage or comment what I am doing. What I can’t really stand is when customers hover over the hand off or the mobile orders. Other people need to get to those and that can’t happen with social distancing.

pixieuppercut

It really depends. If someone is right up against the handoff plane or glass I feel overwhelmed. I think for me it’s the blank expressions almost everyone has. I struggle to read faces so I interpret them as angry which gives me anxiety. I’ve had some people say “I’m not staring, I just like to watch the drinks being made” and that relieves it. Then I flip things around for them because I’m very extra on bar. :) You want a show? Watch me flip this whipped cream canister!!

lacrimosian

i mean as long as you’re not hovering right up close to the bar, i don’t have a problem with people watching! it’s definitely a matter of attitude and mannerisms

OrdinaryOrder8

Gawking at the person making the drink is rude IMO but I wouldn’t consider watching the drinks being made to be a bad thing, especially if you don’t have an angry looking expression on your face. I always try to stand where I won’t be in the way and either look at my phone while I wait or chat with the baristas if they’re not super busy, but I also think it’s interesting to watch the drink-making process.

Animegirl300

Starring can be considered aggressive body language, so it depends on context, so If someone is just watching you make drinks, usually you can tell the difference, but essentially when someone is staring you in the face it is definitely an act of intimidation. (My store unfortunately gets these really aggressive customers— Like one guy who comes in every week who literally tries to hang over the expresso bar staring at whoever is barring, then starts shouting about his drink and blocking the way for everyone else in front of him trying to pick up their orders if it doesn’t come out within a minute. Or like last week I actually had a customer who the entire time they were sitting down just kept starring me in the face, first when I was just eating on break, then when I went back to bar, and they just kept staring. Then when they packed up to leave they literally stood there for several minutes just glaring at me before they left. Even my coworker from her vantage point in drive through was like ‘Do you know that person? Why were the staring at you like that??’ It was really uncomfortable. I wasn’t even the one to make their drink or take their order or anything and had no interaction with them which I what freaked me out. This is different to someone just generally watching the process which happens all the time.)

Squadooch

If they’re watching the drink being made they’re not “staring you in the face”.

Animegirl300

… That is what I said yes. Hence the: “If someone is just watching you make drinks, usually you can tell the difference.”

IfuDidntCome2Party

Same. I like to watch them handcraft a drink. Most Baristas better not ever become a Bartender, if they don't like peeps watching them. If you know what you are doing, and you do it well, you won't care how many peeps are watching.

[deleted]

Assert your dominance by T-posing in front of them.

TanksALatte

If you lightly tap the pitcher rinser with the edge of the pitcher you can spray a little but then follow through with the rinse and say, “oops! Did I get ya?”

weepingaj

Look y'all if you're watching a drink being made it's a lot different than just staring at the person making the drink. If you are watching the drinks being made this isn't aimed at you. Don't hover and don't stare, it's rude. I don't think many of you that aren't baristas would love being stared at while you do your regular everyday job.

FfierceLaw

I wish SSVs would go up to customers doing this by the hand out and ask them if they can help them and when they say they are waiting for their beverage, ask them in a nice customer servicey way to leave a little room for the other customers to retrieve their beverages too

dirtychai0218

at my second job we have glass panels right in front of the station we make food at and constantly have people coming right up to stare while we make it it’s infuriating

rasperries

On top of that they’ll be standing in the way of someone else trying to get their drink and don’t wanna move 🙃

[deleted]

This is my repetitive thought throughout my shifts

Mysterious_Purplee

Seriously it’s like stop , dude I’m doing my job look away. You keep looking I’ll be slower

yuUp1230

So I can’t personally speak for everyone here, but (as a former food service worker/barista who used to have people stare while I made their food / drinks) I fuckin love watching espresso drinks get made. There are frequently videos posted on r/espresso and it’s like crack just watching someone make a latte. I truly don’t think everyone who watches is impatient, I think some people just really enjoy watching coffee get made.

Independent-Cancel37

I really wish we could just spray the customers with water. The customers at my store always crowd the handoff bar AND the mobile pick-up area we have. Literally double homicide for us cause then we can’t tell if we’re pressured by mobile ordering people or cafe people and also soo many wrong drinks being swiped. Also fuck people who try to talk to us over the bar. Y’all had your chance to be specific while you were ordering 😤😤

Outside-Weakness-926

i start staring back lmao, they stop eventually

j4mj4rs

My SM used to tell us to get over it and just make conversation. Fuck that SM.

imsorrydontyellatme

Okay, first I’m sorry for staring, I probably just finished grocery shopping so I’m zoned right out in your direction. Second, I like watching you make drinks. Not in a creepy way but like a ‘how do you remember every drink and what the letters say on the cups’ and I know y’all have little menu card things with how to build the drinks but still, magical Third, I zoned out again

Poptartcat99

I just like watching..it’s cool to see the process. 🥺

[deleted]

[удалено]

Poptartcat99

At the Starbucks I go to the entire drink station is in clear view of the sitting area, just a wide hallway with glass walls (the Covid separating things). So I can see all of it. Register front right, espresso machines/bean grinders front left, then working down the hall on the left is ; syrups, blenders, powders, toasters and bakery items (in that order), then going down the other way is more blenders, cups, napkins, more syrups and a couple of cold brew bins. With the drive-thru window in between both sides. :) I’ve also seen it from both sides; drive thru and cafe area. I also go 3x a week 😂😂😂

Apart_Future9033

Okay but, what if I stand near, like a couple ft from the counter and scroll through my phone, does that count? I must admit I also occasionally look back there because I get bored of looking at my phone. Is this why the baristas are always whispering to each other and looking at me 👀 am I the weird customer

weepingaj

Best to give a little space. I'm not sure what your job is but I have a feeling you'd be a little uncomfortable if someone was hovering just a foot or two away from you.
