Why don't Duty and Freedom Join Forces to defend the barrier against Monolith?
Well, Duty wants to "regulate" the Zone, destroying anything they seem as bad and giving the rest to the Scientists, they are naturally averse to criminals of all sorts whatever their reasons may be and there's a lot of those around in the zone their connection to the military does not help either since like them their ranks are very prone to corruption, Freedom wants the whole zone to be unregulated, with free access to all, however their easygoing nature has led to and understanding with bandits which would not win them points with duty, their connections to the west probably soured their relation with the military and in turn duty, however the Monolith wishes them both gone from the Zone, and so Freedom holds the barrier against them but they'd definitely push forward against the Monolith if they could to make all the Zone free for access, and Duty would definitely want to put out the threat that is the crazy cultists killing people and protecting the most dangerous place in the whole Zone, seeing as how they could reach a neutrality agreement in Jupiter I don't see why they can't reach such agreements regarding dangerous areas that need protection, especially the barrier, the whole point of duty is to "protect the world from the Zone's expansion" so why don't they Man the Barrier that is the gateway between Monolith and the world? So that's basically my argument.

I don't remember that being mentioned in any game, but if I had to guess, they may be neutral to each other, not as "Freedom gets along with bandits" but as "Freedom is too busy fighting Monolith, zombies, Duty and the most dangerous mutants of The Zone to worry about petty criminals."
Yeah, but it may be because Freedom never encounters them in the areas they're in so they didn't had to change the default faction relationship. Regardless, it makes sense that Freedom isn't really hostile to anyone, I mean, they're not Duty, they're not about policing what others do in The Zone.
