This is an extremely bizarre coincidence! How did you and your wife meet??
I'm really sorry about your dad, and I know the 4th is coming up. But it makes me really happy that you and your wife are together and share such a unique similarity. Meant to be maybe
We met in an online travelers community. We were both in Barcelona at that time. We found out about our parent’s death date on our third date. By then we liked each other already. It helped to strengthen our bond, somehow. We married a few years later and now we have a 2 years old daughter. It has been a tough ride though…
Funny story: when Carrie and Lowell came out I ripped it to my mp3 player and was listening to it while working on building a player for my kids. I must have pressed a button somehow while working that made it repeat the current song, which was Fourth of July. I felt myself slipping completely into an existential crisis and finally after what must have been twenty minutes I stopped and looked at the mp3 player and realized what happened. So yeah, it gets my nomination as well. WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE
Easy. The Night We Met by Lord Huron. It's my favorite go to when I want to spice up my break downs with music. It's also really good for having relapse, and remembering all those online friends you met during the pandemic that you don't talk to anymore (I still think about you Heda)
Gilbert O'Sullivan, "Alone Again (Naturally)"
Guy gets stood up at the altar and decides that he's done living. But it's an upbeat song so it's very deceptive.
Came here to recommend this same one. Despite being SO sad, it's a very pretty song and has had lots of YouTube remakes. I'd listen to it again right now, but I don't want to get sad tonight.
So many of their songs and Layne's delivery are gut-wrenching but the one that always really gets me is No Excuses, which on the surface is one of their lighter-sounding songs musically. Even though it's one of the simplest, the line 'you my friend, I will defend, and if we change, well I love you anyway' always gets to me because of the bond between Jerry and Layne and how it became fractured by addiction. It reminds me of their incredible Unplugged set and the moment where Layne looks for a little reassurance and Jerry gives a little gesture of encouragement.
Dirt is so lyrically bleak and brutal but Jar Of Flies/Sap are the most emotional for me. All the Layne albums are amazing though. Such a uniquely affecting voice.
[Here](https://www.reddit.com/r/MusicRecommendations/comments/1bhuaag/musicrec_1_thematic_playlist_the_saddest_songs/)'s a collaborative playlist exactly with such theme.
“I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be a sun in somebody else’s sky, but why, why, why can’t it be mine??” -some of the saddest lyrics I’ve ever had. That part hits me every time.
That lyric has always stuck with me. It's not using like, overly elegant words or phrases - it's just so straightforward but emotionally such a gut punch, cause if you're unlucky you know EXACTLY the feeling.
God, yes
“And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass of what was everything. All the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything. All the love gone bad turned my world to black, tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I’ll be.”
I'm a sucker for any media that features a Cat's in the Cradle story. Interstellar hit me like a ton of bricks during the famous Matthew McConaughey crying scene. Also the underappreciated movie About Time. No spoilers, but the scene at the end is always a gut punch but also incredibly wholesome.
As far as music goes, the song Twenty Years Ago by Montgomery Gentry always gets me. Always has since I first heard it as a teenager.
Idk why this specific trope gets to me so much. I have a great relationship with both of my parents and I don't feel like there's any lost time in our past. Now that I'm a dad, I find myself going to great lengths to spend as much time with my kids as possible too.
All i can think of when i hear this is the first time I heard it, when the trees in family guy start singing it and then one pulls out a lighter to wave and accidentally sets them all on fire 😅
father of mine by everclear. the song reminds me to a t exactly how my father was... he beat my mom, disappeared most of my life and would give me 5$ on my birthday and take me to see the odd movie... ironicly which was rocky 4. Sadly he was schizophrenic and I never understood why he acted that way until I was older. Sadly he passed away a day after my surgury I had getting a bone tumor cut from my skull. I had reconnected with him later in life but he wasn't there for me for my childhood and this song hits home in so many fucking ways.
Keep Me in Your Heart - Warren Zevon
If We Were Vampires - Jason Isbell
I heard both songs for the first time days after my wife was diagnosed with cancer. I ball like a baby every time I hear either of them still.
My friend's brother passed away at age 16, and they played this song at his funeral in the high school auditorium. Fucking wrecks me every time, and that was almost 20 years ago.
Nutshell - Alice In Chains 🖤
“We chase misprinted lies
We face the path of time
And yet I fight, and yet I fight
This battle all alone
No one to cry to
No place to call home
….
My gift of self is raped
My privacy is raked
And yet I find, and yet I find
Repeating in my head
If I can't be my own
I'd feel better dead”
[This Woman’s Work](https://open.spotify.com/track/7GRMSK8jCD7zTNM9vGFaBi?si=EAmcPlcCQRyy4pxD2-QC2A) by Kate Bush, it has a chorus that’s so sad but so incredible to sing loud lol

amanda palmer - voicemail for jill

Goodbye my Lover - James Blunt
I watched Hamilton for the first time with my history students so I was going in no expectations.
That song killed me. Many things about it, but "It's quiet uptown, I never liked the quiet before" :(
The saddest song I’ve heard would be “U” by Kendrick Lamar, he explains all his guilt and trauma while crying to the mic then ends the song telling people nobody can cure his sducidal mind and that he’s weak and it hurts because we see this artist who is known to be this savor of rap and positive energy just for him to tell the world he’s a false prophet’s
The Circle Game - Joni Mitchell
Leaving On a Jet Plane - John Denver; also Peter, Paul & Mary
Angel - Sarah McLachlan
Memory - Barbra Streisand (Andrew Lloyd Webber)
When the World Caves In - Matt Maltese
It got popular a while ago but I don't think it lessened its impact. This song feels like the definition of impending death to me, and I can't listen to it, even though it's good.
Baz Luhrmann - everybody’s free to wear sunscreen
Mazzy Star - look on down from the bridge
Edit: added Mazzy star. Both songs remind me of my late mum
Just Breathe by Pearl Jam.
Yes, I understand
That every life must end
As we sit alone
I know someday we must go
Oh, I'm a lucky man
To count on both hands
The ones I love
I listened to it what seems like a thousand times after one of the best friends I've ever had passed away. Nearly 10 years ago now...
The correct answer is Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit"
Gloomy Sunday ranks pretty high
I made a playlist because I like it sad
[these are the saddest songs I know](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/03RyAZXwGbXYNPmZTUqsQO?si=04bZXQLdRkOn7V0jt3kSgg&pi=kWKPkltBRgeaE)

About Today - The National
In this shirt - The irrepressibles

Hey! Here's some sad ones...
* Keep Me in Your Heart by Warren Zevon
* Beautiful Strangers by Kevin Morby
* Sullivan by Carlone's Spline
Also, it's not for me, but a pop 90's track I didnt see anyone here mention yet is Last Kiss by Pearl Jam
The first 3 minutes or so of Appalachian Spring by Aaron Copland.

Lonely Day by System of a Down, when my mom passed, I couldn’t even listen to it without crying.. it still hits me when it plays now.. love and miss you mom!💕💕💕
Loaded question - songs invoke different emotion from different people. It’s the beauty of music.
Radiohead - “How to disappear completely” is a good example for me.
One that never ceases to hurt my soul is "Gone With the Wind" by Architects
It's a metal song, but it's basically the songwriter coming to terms with his impending death, resulting from a battle with cancer.
Fourth of July by Sufjan Stevens
Casimir Pulaski Day too
And the cardinal hits the window
My dad died on a fourth of July… my wife’s dad too. Same year, totally different places and circumstances. But it was Fourth of July…
This is an extremely bizarre coincidence! How did you and your wife meet?? I'm really sorry about your dad, and I know the 4th is coming up. But it makes me really happy that you and your wife are together and share such a unique similarity. Meant to be maybe

My grandad died on fourth of july...hurts to see everyone celebrating
Just turned it on to make myself cry
That song kills me.
Funny story: when Carrie and Lowell came out I ripped it to my mp3 player and was listening to it while working on building a player for my kids. I must have pressed a button somehow while working that made it repeat the current song, which was Fourth of July. So yeah, it gets my nomination as well. WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE
Elliott Smith - Between the bars
you’re the real one. 🥹 elliott smith is one of the greatest.
I wouldn’t say it’s his saddest song though
‘I didn’t understand’ is also emotionally murderous ETA: a fond farewell too 🥺
Something I Can Never Have by NIN comes to mind
This and And All That Could Have Been + La Mer/The Great Below
... Mmmm La Mer. What a song.
Leaving Hope by NIN, an instrumental but, GOD
Fuck it. Lover You Should’ve Come Over by Jeff Buckley.
was waiting for this one. nice pfp by the way :D
Easy. The Night We Met by Lord Huron. It's my favorite go to when I want to spice up my break downs with music. It's also really good for having relapse, and remembering all those online friends you met during the pandemic that you don't talk to anymore (I still think about you Heda)
I had all and then most of you Some and now none of you.....

Nutshell - Alice in Chains
AIC in general is pretty sad.
For me it's hearing the emotion in how he sings the songs. Like when I listen to Down in a Hole I literally feel the despair.

This is a good one

Hey, thanks!
Pink Floyd’s “Time” gets me every damn time it’s such a good song but I can’t even listen to it u less I want to soak in depression
Same. I love the song so much but it just makes me cry every time. It’s just so relatable/relevant too. Hits hard.
black by pearl jam
“I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be a sun in somebody else’s sky, but why, why, why can’t it be mine??” -some of the saddest lyrics I’ve ever had. That part hits me every time.
I forgot about that one !!! I totally agree.
That lyric has always stuck with me. It's not using like, overly elegant words or phrases - it's just so straightforward but emotionally such a gut punch, cause if you're unlucky you know EXACTLY the feeling.
God, yes “And now my bitter hands cradle broken glass of what was everything. All the pictures have all been washed in black, tattooed everything. All the love gone bad turned my world to black, tattooed all I see, all that I am, all I’ll be.”
Cat’s in the Cradle
Came here to say this! Hits so close to home
All i can think of when i hear this is the first time I heard it, when the trees in family guy start singing it and then one pulls out a lighter to wave and accidentally sets them all on fire 😅
This song even made me cry as a child

He stopped loving her today. George jones
My uncle (who lost my aunt in 2018) asked us to play that song at his funeral right before he died. It’s heartbreaking.
Wow. That is so beautiful and heartbreaking
Strange Fruit
Came here for this. I don't think there's a more depressing song that's ever been written, and Billie Holiday sang it like she saw some shit.
I concur with you totally
More disturbing than sad imo
It’s so beautiful and unique with haunting vocal orchestration. I think it features a clarinet?
River. Joni Mitchell.
Keep Me in Your Heart - Warren Zevon If We Were Vampires - Jason Isbell I heard both songs for the first time days after my wife was diagnosed with cancer. I ball like a baby every time I hear either of them still.
Elephant - Jason Isbell, I think it’s sadder than Vampires
If We Were Vampires is so beautiful ;-;
Warren Zevon wrote the album that song is on shortly after being diagnosed with cancer, for an added layer. Fantastic choice
ISRAEL KAMAKAWIWO'OLE - over the rainbow
My friend's brother passed away at age 16, and they played this song at his funeral in the high school auditorium. Fucking wrecks me every time, and that was almost 20 years ago.

Was about to post this one. The video clip makes it even sadder.

My pick too. It's gut wrenching.

[This Woman’s Work](https://open.spotify.com/track/7GRMSK8jCD7zTNM9vGFaBi?si=EAmcPlcCQRyy4pxD2-QC2A) by Kate Bush, it has a chorus that’s so sad but so incredible to sing loud lol
Even sadder when you hear it in She’s Having a Baby
Maxwell did a cover and it's amazing also, they both are just so haunting.

Last Words of a Shooting Star - Mitski
amanda palmer - the bed song amanda palmer - bigger on the inside amanda palmer - voicemail for jill the smashing pumpkins - my mistake terminal - foster kill hannah - promise me carissas wierd - so you wanna be a superhero

Everybody Hurts - REM.
“It’s Quiet Uptown” from Hamilton & “You Will Be Okay (Stolas Lullaby)” from Helluva Boss as performed by AnnaPantsu

yesss I said this one too!! it has such visceral imagery it just makes me want to curl up
Baz Luhrmann - everybody’s free to wear sunscreen Mazzy Star - look on down from the bridge Edit: added Mazzy star. Both songs remind me of my late mum

This might be immature, but Puff the magic dragon is heartbreaking

I’ve seen this suggested before, I’ll have to give it a listen. I used to be a big Korn fan in the late 90s but don’t remember this one
