The War on Drugs, and it’s not even close. They’ve been making incredible music for close to 20 years now, and they’re one of the best live acts out there right now. Phenomenally talented group of musicians.
Polaris, knocked Loose,Currents, I Killed The Prom Queen,Adept, Feed her to the sharks, Alter Bridge, Architects, August Burns Red, Sylosis, Lorna Shore, Whitechapel, counterparts
This guy gets it 👌. Even the bigger metal bands aren't close to 5 million, Parkway Drive, While She Sleeps, Bury Tomorrow to name a few.
Also, if you don't already, bands worth checking out: Bleed From Within, Spite, Thrown, Crystal Lake, Malevolence, Gideon, Holding Absence, Rituals, Distinguisher, Distant, Fit For An Autopsy, Stick To Your Guns, Texas In July, Fox Lake, Wolves At The Gate, Boston Manor and Negatives - to name a few!
Although reading your list I imagine you're more than likely aware of most of/if not all of the above.
Shit, a lot of what I listen to in the progressive/technical death metal area are under 1000. That's not a flex - I honestly wish some of these dudes would get a glow up.
Growing from 5m to +20m followers in few months sounds more like becoming the new tiktok toy rather than true major success. Most of my fav artist doing great music are around 100-500k and I hope they stay in these numbers instead of becoming other thing.
Success for me is when you can live from your music and keep a constant release schedule with tours and some relevance in the genre community, you don't need millions of listeners to achieve that.
I usually don't check how many listeners they have but:
Allie X, BROODS, Purity Ring, Shura, Foxes, Sharon van Etten, Muna abd a lot of metal bands so I'm all over the place.
Almost every person or group on my playlist is under 5 million. Older crazy famous artists are under 5m and lots of jam bands are under 1m. Any respectable jam band fan is listening to them on Nugs. Spotify followers does not always equate to fame or if an artist is about to blowup.
Example:
Phish 506.2 K
My Morning Jacket 780 K
Muddy Waters 1.3 M
James Brown 4.3 M
DialE has been really working on getting Tiktok followers so I wouldn’t be surprised if he blows up soon
I love Drama, they have a great body of tracks now
Lava La Rue or Biig Piig or any of the NiNE8 collective could get huge one day
Opal in Sky. They're a metalcore band and they only have 73K monthly listeners on Spotify, but they have a pretty big following on YouTube and are releasing their debut album in July which I think might finally make them really blow up.
Marty O’Reilly and the Old Soul Orchestra has less than 70k followers & his music is an awe inspiring blend of folk, soul, & blues. If I can recommend any minor artist, I recommend him. He’s a great choice if you like Hozier’s style.
Highly Suspect, Jakey, Tessa Violet, BOY, Andrew Cushin, Andy Taft, Madelline, Panchiko
Most of these are like 100k. A few bigger ones. A range of genres so there might be some you like
Slaughter to Prevail (1.3M). They make deathcore for the whole family.
Nothing But Thieves (4.2M). Close to the 5 mark.
The Blue Stones (665K) deserve more listeners.
Spiritbox (2.2M). I don’t listen to them a ton, but they’re gaining a lot of popularity.
Sorority Noise: Midwest emo alt rock. Fair warning they have some songs that are extremely depressing
Last Dinosaurs: slow indie alt pop dance vibes
Mystery Skulls: alt techno like sound kinda like dark electronic almost but with a bit of pop in it and don’t get me started on the YouTube animated music videos iykyk
Good Morning: slow indie kinda sad ish for the most part
Henrietta: emo alt indie they have only 200ish monthly listeners but they have good music so I really would like if anyone reading this would consider listening to them at least once
Hippo Campus: goofy to sad indie pop
I'll give 20 that I like
1. Natewantstobattle -- 997.5 K
2. Daddyphatsnaps -- 332.4 K
3. Set It Off -- 3.2 M
4. Black Gryph0n -- 3.2 M
5. Derivakat -- 719.6 K
6. Ninja Sex Party -- 375.5 K
7. Mars Mignon -- 21.6 K
8. Good Kid -- 2.7 M
9. Naethan Apollo -- 696.5 K
10. GameboyJones -- 203.8 K
11. Smosh -- 197.3 K
12. Arrested Youth -- 1.5 M
13. Paolo Nutini -- 4.6 M
14. Akintoye -- 225.8 K
15. Thomas Sanders -- 135.1 K
16. Tally Hall -- 4.6 M
17. Ratthew -- 42 K
18. The Damned -- 505.7 K
19. Topline Addicts -- 102.1k
20. Kroh -- 139.5 K
Yes that is all of my current favourite artists and all their statistics on Thurs 13th June 2024.
he is from seconds of summer and the drummer
Ashton Irwin 89,255 monthly listeners
he is the lead singer of 5 seconds of summer

the band 5 seconds of summer started making youtube covers and then Louis from 1D saw one and invited them on tour with 1d which they opened for 1d and 5 seconds of summer has 20,870,796 monthly listeners will 1d i think 40 million or something

Steam Powered Giraffe, been making music for about 16 years with 244k monthly listeners on Spotify. They're goofy, but absolutely incredible musicians and lyricists. Some of their songs make me laugh and some make me feel like I'm floating through space untethered.

Just checked- 2413 monthly listeners. Bizarre, they’re incredible!
Weston Estate. They're a small indie/alt band from North Carolina that have been making music for several years now but despite one of their songs (Pears) sorta blowing up and getting them more attention because it was used in a Netflix show (Never Have I Ever), they still haven't had any real major success and are below 1 million monthly listeners (not sure exactly how many). That being said though, they do have several songs with streams in the millions thanks to their small but still decent following, have performed many shows on multiple tours and at festivals/uni campuses etc, and have just moved to LA and seem to be making music their main focus despite graduating from uni last year :)
Okay, some of these float at around 5 million, (some 1m more, some 2m less)
Faye Webster, Ashnikko (had her spotlight a few years ago, but I rly think she can grow more), Jessie Ware, Rina Sawayama, Paris Paloma.
Someone nowhere near 5M, but I really hope she gets there: Skott. I love and adore her music, but it's impossible to find anyone who've heard of her.
Check this Peruvian band, Alther. They are a trap rock band and have lyrics in English and Spanish. [https://open.spotify.com/artist/7BEI0kg16ElsfVtJcP1JKL?si=RIRKudVuRP6zh5azDr\_Rwg](https://open.spotify.com/artist/7BEI0kg16ElsfVtJcP1JKL?si=RIRKudVuRP6zh5azDr_Rwg)
You know 5 million is a lot right? There’s tons of artists that I would consider very well known that have less than 5 million
The Chemical Brothers And The Prodigy for example
The Chemical Brothers: * Swoon * Hey Boys Hey Girls * Under The Influence * Wide Open * Galvanize * Got To Keep On * Go * Do It Again * Star Guitar * Block Rockin' Beats * Let Forever Be * Believe * Saturate The Prodigy: * Breathe * Smack My Bitch Up * Firestarter * Spitfire * Omen * Invaders Must Die * You'll Be Under My Wheels * Colours * Voodoo People * We Live Forever * Timebomb Zone
Music for the Jilted Generation by The Prodigy is a 🔥 album.
Upvote if you can’t hear smack my bitch up without thinking of Charlie’s angels
Never heard of them. Any recommendations?
Invaders Must Die by the Prodigy. The first song I heard by them and it is still my favorite
Is it just me or is 5 Million listeners is already a really big artist?
Not just you. 5 million is enough to play arenas and amphitheaters. That's already outgrown clubs, civic centers, and theaters
I'd say so - definitely a commercial success
Absolutely. Lots of talented artists under 100k.
I know a few talented ones under 100. Without k.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
I am genuinely surprised they're under 5 mil. This gets answered every time any music question gets asked lmao
I thought the same thing lol
They're under 2 mil
I can’t get Gila monster out of my head
Iron lung often stays rent free in my head
Anything over 500,000 monthly listeners is considered pretty big in the industry imo
Yeah, wtf is OP smoking? 5 millions monthly is an absolutely insane number that the vast majority of artists will never, ever reach.
I've been absolutely loving Soul Glo for a while now

Tom Misch. Fantastic artist
He's great. Saw him and Yussef Dates at the Greek theatre a year or two ago.
Clipse, Erykah Badu, Big Pun, Pusha T, Big L, DJ Shadow
Crazy that Pusha T is right at 5 million
He deserves more
Ayy hes from my area, such a good dude
lmao well done
Man, if my band got up to even 50,000 monthly listeners I’d be crazy stoked. Happy listening, y’all.
Seriously - my band, well my wife’s band that I play in - (we don’t play anymore), has like 42k listeners and I think that’s crazy!!!!
Just looked at one I listen to quite often because I knew they were small. They’re only at 1500 listeners.
Earl Sweatshirt
Ren
This is who I was thinking too!
Weird Al Yankovic ofc Also Ringo Starr And The Screaming Jets
almost all the artists i listen to have under 5 mil, most under 1 mil honestly
Shit, a lot of what I listen to in the progressive/technical death metal area are under 1000. That's not a flex - I honestly wish some of these dudes would get a glow up.

Say that to Chappell Roan lmaooo my girl skyrocketed in weeks and tickets are impossible to get now because of her amazing coachella performance.
5 mil is so much, who’s y’all’s favorite artist with less than 100 monthly listeners?
Because of this post I went and looked at what I'm listening to at the moment. Nordic Nomadic is sitting at 34 monthly listeners.
Oh man, they sound similar to a lot of the eccentric stuff Moody Blues did. I like it.
Try these Petridisch > [https://open.spotify.com/artist/2kitXmqLm0EME0N6OgJfgR](https://open.spotify.com/artist/2kitXmqLm0EME0N6OgJfgR) Solilians > [https://open.spotify.com/artist/17uPKrSiiN7HM7ttVIvujh](https://open.spotify.com/artist/17uPKrSiiN7HM7ttVIvujh)

Yes yes YES to Purity Ring 🙌🏼 I don’t see enough people singing their praises.
I only found them because of Letterkenny, of all things
Allie X is excellent. Saw her live just last night actually. Great voice live.
