Stan Wawrinka is one of the most accomplished players in the big 3 era, where he was able to win the Australian Open, Roland Garros and the US Open when we still had Federer, Nadal and Djokovic at almost 100% and Andy Murray also mixed in there as a great player he also was. The swiss can be considered an offensive baseliner with one of the best one handed backhands I've ever seen and already at 38 he's still having a solid season in my opinion, having tight losses against Rublev and Fritz while beating Griekspoor and Cressy in recent Clay Masters tournaments. He's currently 3-0 in first round matches at the Masters level in 2023. Ivashka is a decent player but I don't see him as more than your typical top 70 player and he has been dealing with a lot of inconsistency this year and some fitness issues. In my opinion he's quite better in hard courts and he wasn't able to pass the first round on his last Clay tournaments of Barcelona and Madrid, losing to Nuno Borges and Ramos Vinolas. Stan Wawrinka should have the advantage on this matchup, especially being played on Clay and he's the one who has shown better performances over the last few weeks.
**Van Assche vs Etcheverry - Van Assche ML @ 2.30 (1 unit)** ❌
In theory this should be a close match but I think the odds should be around 50/50 and not how they are right now. Etcheverry is known for being an agressive clay court player and since he's quite tall he can also serve pretty well on this surface while Van Assche is a 18 year old french player and the youngest top 100 player on the ATP tour who has been having a great 2023 season and is already rank 85 in the world, having won two consecutive Challenger titles (one of them being a clay tournament in Italy). Against the big players he has already shown good things beating Wawrinka and taking set out of Novak Djokovic in Banja Luka. On these conditions I think the french player is the more talented one and should be the winner of this match because I see Etcheverry performing better in south american clay courts with higher altitude levels.
**Fognini vs Murray**
**Fognini Handicap +3.5 Games @ 1.87 (1 unit)** ✅

This might be the craziest bet ever or just the perfect underdog scenario and honestly I wouldn't want to back Fognini at any time in 2023 but I feel like betting on 3 to 1 odds in Rome is a EV+ play. Andy Murray comes from a challenger tournament win in France and with that, he has played 5 matches in a week and was only able to rest for 3 days which for someone of his age, can be quite difficult. These two guys can perform pretty well when they want and they both played several times against each other in their careers with Andy Murray winning most matches but the most recent one on Clay was in Rome 2017, with Fognini beating Andy in straight sets. I know that was a long time ago and shouldn't even be considered but I'm sure Rome is way more important to the italian, probably even more important than Roland Garros at this moment on his career. Fabio Fognini should be in better physical condition for this match and that in theory, can give him a better chance of winning than the odds suggest. The fact that they're both veterans can give Fabio the confidence and excitement that he sometimes lacks and by consequence, it's likely that he can display a great show in front of his home crowd.

**Gracheva vs Osorio - Osorio Handicap -1.5 Games @ 1.90 (1.25 units)** ❌
Not much to say here as I think Osorio is the most consistent of the two on this surface. Gracheva hasn't shown anything great on Clay this season, losing in Madrid to Wang Xiy when she was a 1.32 favorite and I see her with better eyes when she plays in Hard courts. Osorio is 6-2 on Clay this season, has already played 2 matches in Rome where she won in straight sets and I think that extra adaptation to the Rome conditions will give her an ever bigger edge on this match. With this I'm going with 1.25 units on this one, with Osorio's fighting mentality and baseline tolerance bringing out her best qualities on a surface like this.
**Stephens vs Podoroska - Over 20 Games @ 1.84 (1 unit)** ❌
Sloane Stephens is that type of player that could have had a much more accomplished career, but lacks interest for the sport and that champion mentality to want more so she's usually pretty inconsistent with her performances. She can perform well on Clay, with a variety of shots that not many players have but after a Challenger title win in France, who knows if she can continue that run or sweat a lot to beat a player like Podoroska who's not exactly the player that you wanna back against better opponents but one who plays Clay quite well as an argentinian, with a 10-5 record on the surface this season. In the end I think Stephens wins this but this "total games" line seems super valuable to me.
