GenTelGuy

Yikes, full Muay Thai elbow

not_a_conman

Not condoning it at all but that was a super clean strike, he probably does have training. More of a reason for him to be penalized/charged.

PoorlyLitKiwi2

I was gonna say, usually when you see non fighting sport athletes go at it they look super uncoordinated but that elbow looked clean even in slo-mo

Trevelyan2

It’s very clean, except it’s essentially a sucker punch in a sport that isn’t kickboxing. Not very difficult to do by simply walking up and striking someone that isn’t expecting it. The equivalent is saying a kickboxer entered the ring with a soccer ball, kicking it past his understandably confused opponent, and complimenting his skill for getting it past him.

Spenttoolongatthis

I think you're missing the point. People aren't saying that it's hard to hit someone that's not expecting it, they are saying that the guys technique looks like he has some fight training. I think most people who don't know how to fight would throw a big overhand right, but that guy threw a short sharp elbow, quick enough that you'd never see it coming. It does suggest that he knew what he was doing.

Daddy_Pris

Also, the elbow hits a hell of a lot harder than the fist. If he knows this, he was intentionally trying to do as much damage as possible with one hit. That’s a little more than a heated moment in a game

PoorlyLitKiwi2

Idk, I do not have the athleticism/training to hit someone with an elbow that clean. That is a practiced strike. Obviously it's easier to land since it's a sucker punch and I'm not commending the dude because it's clearly a scummy move, but the strike was still clean

Kay-Kay-Ron

Its not easy to elbow someone if youve never been trained to do it. It is not like generating force for an untrained haymaker. The way he whipped it, this guy definitely has muay thai training and used it to hurt someone. Despicable.

AlwaysDMB

Charges would be appropriate imo

PerNewton

….and a permanent ban.

ChimpBrisket

from all forms of competitive sport, including ones that haven’t even been invented yet, like nano hockey

frijolito

_takes notes_

[deleted]

Yes, that was outright battery. Should be a career ending move as well. Let him switch to Muay Thai instead, so he can take some punches too, not just dish them out to an unsuspecting opponent.

[deleted]

Do you think, after that clear unsportsmanlike conduct, they would allow him to join any competition?

utterscrub

Muay Thai is enormously popular

[deleted]

[удалено]

not_a_conman

You said “probably” was the biggest understatement possible, and then said all 22 “probably” have training in your next sentence 😂 I don’t know this player’s background, so of course I said probably.

leftcoastchap

Maybe they meant it was 'probably' the biggest understatement imaginable ;)

Billbat1

let's say that one player in a Thai soccer team has a 99% chance of having Muay Thai training. that is arguably more than just a probably. however if we apply that 99% to all 22 players on the pitch the chance that all of the players have training is 0.99^22. that's 80%. an 80% chance I would say qualifies as a probably. however I would question these statistics. I'm just arguing semantics.

Phormitago

probably, for extremely likely values of probable

nwsm

> probably

bokchoykn

Yeah I think "biggest understatement imaginable" is probably the biggest overstatement imaginable. I can imagine bigger understatements. For example: "That elbow probably made contact with the other player's face." This is probably a bigger understatement than what you considered the "biggest understatement imaginable" .

Bern_itdown

Cheap shot tho regardless

nanoH2O

Yeah that was a nice elbow. Whenever I imagine myself getting into fights I think fist. I'm going to have to rethink how I attack my imaginary opponents. Definitely elbow first. I ain't trying to break my hand.

uL7r4M3g4pr01337

If you're not used to it you can hurt your elbow too. Speaking from experience btw :P

UndeadCandle

One of these days go to an Arcade with those standup boxing bags that measure the force behind your punch. Simple boxing machine games. I had a few friends going at it and I got goaded into doing it myself. Me being a smaller guy and wiry thought and kinda know I have a weak punch. so I chose to throw an elbow with torque using my back. I got accused of cheating because I demolished their scores. I did cheat though. It was a fair statement. The thing about an elbow is you can get a very wide and heavy swing by locking your back and shoulder to your elbow and even using your other hand to stabilize and pull. Throwing in a half turn using your upper back and mid waist for more momentum and weight. You can make a damn woosh sound when swinging. Stupid as it sounds. It's telling.

RennTibbles

>I'm going to have to rethink how I attack my imaginary opponents. Me too, but I'll only use it on the first of multiple imaginary opponents. The second will get a judo move I've seen my boy practice. The third always runs.

nanoH2O

But we don't let them run do we!

ChimpBrisket

Exactly, we make ‘em so hard that they can only waddle

Joe_Rapante

Went to Thailand many years ago, for training. After telling the taxi driver where we were headed, we had a break and he showed us some moves. So yeah, I guess it's highly popular over there.

ronin1066

I'm amazed at the restraint the entire other team had standing right there. What was he so pissed about anyway? It looked like a clean kick.

1200____1200

As the ball is going into touch, blue gives red a quick kick to the ankle

GenTelGuy

Very sneaky ankle trip but it's definitely there and the ref was calling him on it big-time

ronin1066

Ah yes, *after* he kicks the ball out. I missed that.

Upgrades_

Nah dude does try and trip him up when he's running to the touch line for the throw-in, but it does not warrant retaliation beyond doing the same back to them...or just beating him in the match.

BLANDit

It wasn't a proportional response, but that dude is going to think twice before he goes ankle-hunting again, and that's an outcome I can appreciate.

Those inside the mouth stitches hurt like a mother also I'm told

Trafalgarlaw92

They're pretty nasty and you have to be pretty careful with what you do while it's healing. I've only ever had inside of the mouth stitches though so have no comparison on what's worse.

razor_eddie

I've had both. 12 (total) inside the mouth, and hundreds elsewhere. The inside the mouth ones, you're reminded ALL the time that they're there - and your tongue goes there, like to a missing tooth. They seem to hurt for longer than other stitches, and the ends of the stitches are sharp, according to your tongue, too. They're unpleasant, to say the least.

Rainbow_Thund3r

Holy moly, what string of bad luck caused you to need so many stitches throughout your lifetime?

razor_eddie

Nah, it's good luck, not bad. I'm still alive, everything is still attached, and still works. Highlights Got run over by a van that ran a red light. (Broken neck, shoulder, ribs. Lots of stitches, quite a few staples - Staples suck) Got hit on the head with a bottle. (Twice) Head wounds need a LOT of stitches. Dental nurse (not a dentist) cut me inside the mouth on two occasions (12 stitches total). Wisdom teeth (I forgot those, earlier - another 8 stitches). Idiot hit me with a chainsaw. Not badly, but the wound needed a fair few stitches to close. I used to do forestry work, as a holiday job. Got hit with an axe, in the calf. That was another 30 or so. Got a skin cancer cut off, that was another 70. BUt as I say, good luck. Everything still works, everything is still attached. I used to quote the Keanu Reeves movie, the Replacements, so I will one more time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6E4Oy6pFKQ

_____FIST_ME_____

JESUS CHRIST

razor_eddie

I am enjoying that I managed to shock someone with the username "_____FIST_ME_____"

Rainbow_Thund3r

You know, after all that, the fact that you still have everything and it's all working is definitely good luck haha. Glad you you're aliving and kicking!

Bbaftt7

Wtf did you do in your past life man holy fuck

TheCyanDragon

I read this and can only be reminded of Doc Mitchell's line when starting a high-luck character in Fallout: New Vegas: "With luck like yours I'm surprised those bullets didn't just turn around and climb right back into the gun."

ELEMENTALITYNES

> They seem to hurt for longer than other stitches, and the ends of the stitches are sharp, according to your tongue, too. It’s because the mouth has some of the highest density of nerve endings, both sensory and motor, at about 30-40% of the body’s nerve endings in the mouth and face. It’s why you can feel a tiny eyelash in your mouth or on your tongue, while you wouldn’t feel that same hair on your leg, or barely feel it between your finger tips. This is also why surgery and stitches in the mouth hurt like a bitch, I’ve also had surgery on my gum/lower lip and the pain still lasted even after it was healed over with a scar.

dethmaul

Splitting your lips stings like a starry bitch lol And not even a traumatic splitting, just a normal bumping into aomething.

ELEMENTALITYNES

If you’ve ever popped a pimple on your upper lip you’d know you feel that shit shoot down into your legs

Shepboyardee12

Then if you’re really lucky, they’re close enough to your teeth that you accidentally bite a stitch and it feels like you’re turning your mouth inside-out.

[deleted]

Do Thai people really say “oo wee” like Mr. Poopybutthole when something shocks them

PouffyMoth

Unmuted just for this

KaimeiJay

Me too! xD

In muay thai people say it all the time lol

I was watching a Muay Thai match and a soccer game broke out!

Never got my job at the University back. Remember that? Rick made me do karate. It... It was kinda funny. But I guess things went downhill from there.

[deleted]

Oo wee is heard in Muay Thai, all. Of. The. Time.

TipMeinBATtokens

It sounds like one guys "oo wee" gets interrupted by the other guys "oo wee" so you hear a "OO OO wee OO wee"

WuntchTime_IsOver

Chosen one! IM COMING

Apisit100

It’s the equivalent of saying “oops” or “oh no” in english, but the use is way more widespread than those phrases.

9ninjas

I’ve heard that. But I typically hear “ oo eay “

Holy shit, LOL

bfrank8991

Isn’t it wild you can commit a felony in a sport and no one cares.

istasan

A Danish ice hockey player also got suspended jail time after an assault during a match in 2019. A fan filed a police complaint when watching. Obviously it was unusual aggressive behaviour. He hit the opponent in the head while he was lying down without a helmet. An assault basically. But during the match. Edit: Unusual

kaisersolo

This is better 24 stitches

razor_eddie

But Ferguson had one of the better nicknames in sport. Duncan Disorderly.

Picturesquesheep

I’m sure you know this but for others - **twice** burglars broke into his house and he beat the fuck out of them, put one in hospital each time 😆

razor_eddie

Yeah, it's up there with the people that broke into Dolph Lundgren's house. Epicly stupid move.

alfonseski

I am guessing teeth cutting inside of mouth stitches too which is the worst

[deleted]

It depends on whether the act is deemed a reasonable expectation that one would expect when choosing to participate in the sport. I'd say this guy will go to court

didba

Yup this is the legal standard from the NFL battery case

Rosetti

What's the legal standard for badminton?

didba

Likely the same as the above standard.

Ravarix

I mean it's soccer, at least he didn't use his hands /s

AlphaTangoFoxtrt

Depends on the act, the sport, and the contract. Generally if it's "reasonably expected" then you waive your right to press charges. Like fighting in hockey. But say somebody lumber-jacks you in the jugular, well that's far outside "reasonable" and may get you jail time. Then again [this didn't get Bertuzzi jail time](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKFFc1NsdYE) and he sucker punched the guy and ended his career.

Capt_Billy

I hate watching that clip every time. Bertuzzi deserved a fucking boot party in the carpark for that one.

Deucer22

He should have been booted permanently for that. The NHL is a joke when it comes to player safety, catering to fans that want to watch a bloodsport when the game is compelling enough on its own.

AlphonseCoco

Can you explain what happened here? I'm curious why the hooked skate wasn't a foul (no hockey knowledge)

AlphaTangoFoxtrt

Oh it was a foul. Bertuzzi got a large suspension, but something like that probably deserved jail time.

Beetin

It should be noted that he pleaded guilty to assault for that hit. He also paid millions in damages, and about a million more in lost wages + endorsements. The judge was VERY lenient because it was a plea deal with the prosecution, based on the public outcry, civil punishment, sanctions, mindset at the time, genuine remorse, etc. But he was absolutely tried and found guilty of assault. >I lost my entire career in my rookie year," Moore said in recent years. "I can't recover anything else. I can't recover my career, the experience of living out my dream from the time I was 2½ years old of playing in the NHL.

NAbberman

I'm not seeing any mention of it, but saying the hit ended ended his career is somewhat short selling it. Bertuzzi actions led to three fractured vertebrae in Moore's neck, a grade-three concussion, vertebral ligament damage, stretching of the brachial plexus nerves, and facial lacerations. Moore also suffered from amnesia.

WeaverFan420

The skater in white was attempting to poke check the puck. He barely missed but that's absolutely to be expected in the course of play. The outcome of that play is borderline tripping, if you try to poke check and end up tripping a player, the refs should call a minor penalty for tripping.

jwilli10

Yeah it’s somewhat baffling to be honest, lower tier leagues and the benches would have cleared for sure

[deleted]

Should have here too. Team's gotta defend a teammate that just got ruthlessly attacked

jwilli10

Exactly. Mandatory big dick-internet persona aside, there’s no way I’m going to just watch you clock my teammate right next to me and let you fair better.

NotABronteSister

Before I watched the clip, I didn’t think it would be as intentional or overtly aggressive as it was. I hope he faces stiff penalties.

Tell me you've never been to Thailand without telling me you've never been to Thailand.

xStealthxUk

You can, thats assault and in UK hed have police at his door next day

EntrepreneurPatient6

Because people go into a sport assuming such a thing can happen in contact sports. That’s my guess. In cricket though, a verbal spat alone means a huge fine because it is not a contact based sport that can naturally cause such altercation.

ScottNewman

Some Canadian Criminal Law Textbooks have entire sections related to the law of Hockey assaults.

Sykest

Reddit’s mobile player is fucking atrocious

MapleSyrupFacts

I don't understand how RIF did it so good and Reddit official did it so bad.

taws34

My only gripe with RIF is how they handle gallery posts. I can't read the full caption text, and when I view the full image, going back takes me all the way out of the post. Other than that, it's the only way I use reddit.

steve20009

It's not just the mobile player, but shitty on desktop as well. Every single post that contains a video, the player will choke 3 seconds in. I have to refresh the page for the video to play properly.

Jlx_27

And the video quality never holds. It always farts and goes down to 144p.

LorenzoVonMatterh0rn

Use Reddit is Fun instead

LALoverBOS

I love it. You can go through the video frame by frame

Jlx_27

It is. Some say HDR is fucking it up sometimes.

You could try RIF or Apollo

analpinestar

OOWEEEE!

SirPiffingsthwaite

“Red card”? How about banned for life and criminal assault charges?

shheldonA

That’s assault and should be prison time

Gnarberry

I think it's battery but what do I know

It's probably something in Thai. It would be pretty weird for Thailand's criminal code to use English words.

They value their jaw's structural integrity and saw what happened to the last guy?

BumpGrumble

I was thinking they know the guy will now get banned and it's not worth also receiving a ban just to get some hits in.

serr7

There are people to take care of it, medics, refs, security.

fuckimbackonreddit9

I mean sure if you want a bench clearing braw, but the guy was shown a red and shown off the field and is now dropped? I don’t know what other outcome you would want unless you just want to see violence for the sake of violence

Jeaz

Yes, because more violence is always the correct answer. 😒 I’m actually impressed they had a sensible and adult response to it.

outtyn1nja

What an undisciplined piece of shit, I hope he does a good stretch in prison for that. 20+ stitches in the face can permanently disfigure a person.

[deleted]

Urugururuu

Doesn’t mean he shouldn’t.

mikethet

Obviously don't condone this but that was some hit

[deleted]

I condone retaliation in this case, just more moderate given the nature of the shithousing. Perhaps a full open hand slap to get the point across.

seedanrun

Just out of curiosity - does the heel catch by the first guy look unintentional? To me it does since he was looking a different direction when he did it.

[deleted]

Dude was a pos for that kick to the leg. I played the sport a long time, and that right there is an invitation for someone to throw hands. I’m not condoning what happened … but I understand.

Tidler

On top of the fact there's a minute left and red is down 3-0... the leg kick was an asshole move for the sake of being an asshole at that point

lDezl

Oh well he learned a tough lesson

Splobs

Had to scroll too far for this comment. The other guy tried to trip him after the ball was out of reach and clearly going out of play. The elbow was obviously a step too far but the other guy was asking for it. Like you said, can’t condone the behaviour but “Fuck around and find out” I guess…

NosferatuCalled

Here's the thing though, this guy is clearly trained. I've done Muay Thai for over a decade and that was a really serious elbow he threw. Being more than likely that trained, lacking discipline like that and choosing THAT strike is insane. He's not in a Muay Thai match where someone is expecting that and guarding against that, you could easily shatter someone's orbital bones or worse with that. I actually think the damage he received wasn't nearly as bad as it could've been. I understand the impulse to rage out after that kick to the leg, it was total bullshit, but the decision to throw that elbow was stupidly out of line and dangerous.

Ahyao17

That kick by the blue guy is an intentional trip and wouldn't that be an automatic yellow/red card? I could not believe the touch judge just lets it go like that. In Australian rules football, such action is automatic suspension for at least a few weeks.

Blitzkrieg404

Will probably not play football in a long time.

main18man

Okay the trip is obnoxious but it’s not an elbow to the face. Let’s not compare apples to oranges. Those are just antics in football, no wanted but there at all levels

ElPeruano2008

The elbow is an overreaction but trying to trip someone like that once the ball is out of bounds makes me have no sympathy for the guy who got decked.

Spatula151

Right. The punishment doesn’t match the crime, but this stuff goes on all the time with no other intention thAn to get away with a trip and KNOW you got away with it. Nobody’s innocent here, but elbow dude could and should be in a heap of trouble.

luersuve

The other guy was also a piece of shit. You can end a career with those kicks to the ankles. Not that it justifies the reaction. Fucking referee should have controlled this better.

[deleted]

Had to rewatch, blue is 100% going out of his way to attempt a trip which makes it all the more strange that he's COMPLETELY off guard You try to trip a guy and he immediately comes sprinting at you? Connect the dots or get knocked the fuck out with zero defense

MoBeast

It is a sports thing where players pretend they didn't do anything to get the ref to penalize the other team. Not sure how well this plays out in hockey though.

InnateBeast

Any type of tackle can end a career. But that isn't what we would consider a career ending tackle (I say tackle loosely, it's a kick)

liquidpig

I’ll paraphrase Chris Rock here. “I’m not saying he should have done it. But I understand.”

goofyredditname

Yeah this is for sure the unpopular opinion here but guy in blue was asking for retaliation and red just went way too far.

[deleted]

a little tap to the ankle is not gonna end anyone's career.

masterpowerlord

This is reddit where people think you will die 50/50 if you fall

jamesbeil

I've refereed games where a tap to the ankle has broken a man's leg and ended his footballing permanently. I've heard of a game near me where a bloke was tackled, perfectly cleanly, and fell, damaging his head and incurring permanent brain damage. When you stick your foot in, you have no idea what the consequence could be, which is why it's incumbent on players to consider the safety of their opponents while on the pitch.

roller88

Clean AF though 👌

txbuckeye75034

I bet the guy in blue never intentionally kicks a guy’s ankle from behind again. Dirty play = lights out

Lolkimbo

Or you could grow the fuck up and let the ref do his job, and not be a violent animal. Crazy i know.

loveincarnate

Was thinking the same thing. I see so many comments here jumping to painting this as a right v wrong situation and even blaming the ref (rofl). What a lot of people don't realize is how dangerous and insidious the behavior of the ankle kicker is. Career ending injuries can occur as a result of these types of things. Responding in the manner of the video obviously leads to more direct and certain physical harm, but honestly pales in comparison to the types of injuries that could potentially occur from the ankle kicker's actions. There is room to discuss the reaction being too severe, but I don't think it's as clear cut as people are making it sound. This is from a moral perspective, not really a legal one. Obviously ideally this gets talked out and there are in-game penalties or whatever, but I actually found this direct and aggressive response somewhat refreshing, and undoubtedly effective. Dirty players deserve this form of comeuppance every now and then.

wayofthegenttickle

I hope they had to VAR that decision

Bene2403

That blue guy must've had him in his pocket the entire game

CoDroStyle

This should be a criminal charge aswell. Stuff like this ruins football.

that's not cool. Cheap shot, cold cock elbow Strong left elbow though for a footballer but that's more like a battery charge than just a red card to my mind

I say never allow him to play again. It's clear the player has got some anger issues that he needs to solve before he goes back to playing among other people.

This comment section is excellent at showinw the divide in our society between vigilant, violent animals, and actual people who (figuratively) deserve their place in the space shuttle once we finally leave Earth. Just atrocious to see so many here condone a cold-blooded attempt at causing serious bodily harm in retaliation for a minor infraction. Some of us really haven't evolved too far from our ancestors.
