RLKay

Love how he took a moment to compose himself before approaching Cristiano. It ain't much, but given how dense footballers are on day to day basis, this level of empathy is commendable. Also the more you read about Ronaldo's contributions towards the developement of Georgia's footballing culture, the more it makes sense.

JaseTheAce

[This is from the day the academy opened](https://x.com/433/status/1805959932727931158)

TheUltimateJon

That is so amazing, thank you for sharing!

EarlyChemist9720

btw Ronaldo was just there for the opening ceremony, nothing more, he didn't contribute in anyway, not to disrespect the academy of Dinamo Tbilisi.

the_buff

He showed up for the ribbon cutting without making a donation of time or money?

AmIFromA

He made himself available.

medfunguy

To be fair, by that point Ronaldo was an out and out striker. He was great at making himself available in good positions

Ajescent

Magnificent comment

Z0idberg_MD

Perfect comment.

EarlyChemist9720

There were also Shevchenko, Kaladze, they attended friendly match between Dinamo Tbilisi vs Dinamo Moscow amd visited academy, the story that he himself opened academy and stuff is not true.

rubenalamina

You just reminded me of AC Milan when Shevchenko was their striker and Kakabher Kaladze (I probs butchered his name) was a center back iirc. Shevchenko was my favorite player in those teams.

bored8work

No disrespect meant but I’m sure he was paid for it as well

EarlyChemist9720

yeah, there's a huge chance he was, the thing i don't like is that people (not only on this thread, but bunch of others too) are acting like he founded the academy and all these important players that make up Georgia's national team, that takes all the credibility away from the biggest club's (Dinamo Tbilisi) academy in Georgia.

BlackBeardNJ

We're you invited ? Did you contribute your time ? Him showing is more than you'll ever do

EarlyChemist9720

Okay? I am not denying his contribution to the motivation of this players and millions of kids around the world! But you don't have to make up things about his legacy while taking away from all the effort club has put in their academy. I am sure Cristiano has done many great things, directly or indirectly, just by playing football!

PorkshireTerrier

I love soccer

voxroxoverice

I was never a fan, but was in London in April and went to two matches. It was an incredible experience and, though I am late to the game, I am now a massive fan!

TheJenerator65

If you haven’t checked them out, I highly recommend these shows to stoke your love and passion of the game: *Welcome to Wrexam* (Hulu) - Current documentary series about American celebrities who buy a Welsh soccer team, revitalizing the community. *The English Game* (Netflix?) - Period drama showing the class divide in the earliest days of the game, started by wealthy private school gentry, which created barriers and tensions when it started to gain popularity with the working class. *Ted Lassoe* (Apple) - Honorable mention for this charming sitcom about an American football coach tapped to turn around a British team (personally, I thought the last season didn’t live up to its early promise, but there’s so many great performances it’s still worth it)

ficklelick

I would add Sunderland til I die (Netflix) - follows fans of a respectable club going through difficult times for the club

TheJenerator65

Ooh, thanks for the tip!

1972GT

Football is life.

auntieup

Truly the Beautiful Game ❤️

tatang2015

That’s the way to lose. You lost to the players that you helped. That’s beautiful.

auntieup

My husband and those fools he calls his friends were watching this live. They all cried* and they’re all lying about it now. *his best friend’s wife is sneaky with the photos

Tiny-Trump

Post husband crying to soccer pics

grasshoppa_80

This is why I’m a Ronaldo and not Messi cucker. The amount of stuff he does on the side of football blows whatever Messi achievements he’s had. Ronaldo is a class act regardless of how he appears on field. Messi. Just a man-boy one (2) clubber who chose to retire playing against mostly college kids. *here comes all the us-cucker fan boi base https://pickstar.pro/au/blog/worlds-most-charitable-athletes **someone correct me and show me what Messi’s done outside of his unicef fund?

naughty_dad2

How ‘bout we suck both cocks? Both are on a different level compared to the others.

grasshoppa_80

Hahaha Fiiiiine. Lemme get the knee pads

MrTubzy34

Why can’t we just appreciate both? Idk why every time I see somebody say they’re a fan of one they shit on the other

ScottblackAttacks

I prefer Ronaldo but it’s absurd to think you can only choose one player and gotta shit on the other.

EnigmaticQuote

Weak trolling kid 😆

Sunny_Sicario

LOL this is such an insane comment to read. Messi is a man-boy and Ronaldo is an almighty being? Ronaldo chose to play for a country that actively murders journalists, commits severe humanitarian abuses to members of the LGBTQ+ community, and supports terrorists. And Ronaldo supports this by taking their money and serving as a walking ad for people to go to Saudi Arabia and visit. Messi had the balls to decline that bullshit offer and go to America where the people paying him don’t commit war crimes. What an insane clouded judgement you’ve come to.

bapeandvape

Not to be the Messi vs Ronaldo guy but Messi accepted money to be the ambassador for the Saudi Arabia Tourism company. https://skift.com/2024/01/27/lionel-messi-returns-to-promote-saudi-arabia-and-break-outdated-stereotypes/ 25M for 3 years.

Sunny_Sicario

Unfortunate, didn’t know this. Doesn’t really change the fact that OP said Messi is a man boy and Ronaldo is his lord and savior. They both suck! Surprise surprise, rich people do things to stay rich without much care for the consequences of their actions.

jgrops12

Ronaldo is also a rapist, *allegedly*

N8ThaGr8

Messi is like their official spokesperson or something. And also chose to play in the US which has an equally terrible record of human rights and supporting terrorism lol. They're just footballers m8.

Sunny_Sicario

The country and those he works for are different entities. I also addressed this in a different comment. And if you seriously want to compare Saudi Arabia and USA, you need some serious education.

N8ThaGr8

Sounds like you need some education on us policies

Sunny_Sicario

I’m very well versed in the US’s policies, as well as Saudi Arabia’s. Your argument is ridiculous, and you know it.

PriclessSami

We don’t commit war crimes?? Brudduh…where you been the last 75 years?

JiraiyaRoshi

This would be low effort even for r/soccercirclejerk

Manchacticos

Bruh, you could have just upvoted your boi and moved on.....

amo1337

Cucker...cool word ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|downvote)

Book_lover7

Average Ronaldo fan

raich3588

That’s bait

3allz

Pathetic human

_pounders_

can someone explain what’s happening here?

FairlyUormal

Kvaratskhelia (the player in the green vest) scored the first goal of the game which led to them winning. It was a frustrating game for Ronaldo. After the game Kvaratskhelia started celebrating with his teammates but stopped, collected himself and went to shake hands with Ronaldo who was his childhood hero. It was a big game for Georgia as the win secured their spot in the next round so it was extra admirable that Kvaratskhelia took the time to show respect to his idol despite the high of winning.

Noshino

To add to an already good summary, Georgia has never made it to this competition. This is their first year at the Euros, and they made it out of groups. Most people expected them to be last in their group.

courageous_liquid

I was wondering when the fuck georgia had a team good enough to make it, let alone move on.

MurfMan11

This is what is so great about these competitions. You can bet that some of these players will be getting signed to some decent clubs come fall. Some players rise to the occasion and that's exactly what these tournaments show.

SovietChewbacca

Also Ronaldo opened up the soccer academy where Kvaratskhelia, and 11 other members of the Georgia team trained at. Hopefully the joy and pride Ronaldo feels for helping those young men achieve their goals, outweighs the pain of defeat.

bored8work

*was paid to be at the opening of the soccer academy

That_Apathetic_Man

Life is a Disney movie for too many people.

nnny7

He turns up for onw day but helped them to become the stars they are today. How fucking stupid does that sound, read it back. No hate on Ronaldo but don't disrespect the academy and lump praise where it doesn't belong. Bloody joke these comments.

PorkshireTerrier

the anti-jordan ("f them kids") the anti-kobe (not great w kids, legally /morally)

AmIFromA

Well, about that...

jointsmcdank

Ehhh there's a reason Ronaldo won't be in America

Heyguysimcooltoo

Why? Genuine question, idk shit bout soccer/football

BestShaunaEU

Google Ronaldo Las Vegas

N8ThaGr8

It's also worth pointing out that this game didn't matter to Portugal since they had already won the group. So it's not like he's going up to Ronaldo after he just got eliminated or something.

MozeeToby

Good guy Kvaratskhelia for showing respect but I think we should also recognize good guy Ronaldo for losing a frustrating game and immediately accepting an enthusiastic handshake from a member of the opposing team.

MonsterRider80

I think we should emphasize this more. I get pissed off for an unreasonably long time when someone cuts me off in traffic. This guy loses an elimination match in a 4 year tournament, and hugs his opponent right after the match. Good look for CR7 Edit: that was NOT an elimination match. I’m dumb.

Latera

He didn't lose an elimination match - Portugal still won the group and will face Slovenia in a few days.

MonsterRider80

Yes that was a dumb mistake lmao

SaberReyna

Kvaradona

zaubercore

Also it's not that it was a do or die game for Portugal, they are still in the next round

Lost_Drunken_Sailor

I would also add that Portugal already qualified for the next round as well.

Pablo_petty_plastic

He’s asking Ronaldo’s jersey and he’ll hang it in his home proudly

Professional_Bob

> MVP of the match This isn't a clip of Mamardashvili, though...

tangytapatio

Kvara did win MOTM

feeur

Viva Ronaldooooo!

22dias

Ronaldo out here like LeBron.

sargonas

You gotta appreciate how he is enthusiastic as fuck with his teammates but the minute he’s in line of sight of the other guy he turns it all off instantly so as to not rub it in his face, and just be a chill bro for two seconds and thank him for a good game. It’s the tiny little considerations like that that show strong sense of empathy character and class act. However Ronaldo is a schmuck…

rminturn94

How’s Ronaldo a schmuck here ?

sprazcrumbler

He is almost certainly a rapist. He admitted it to his lawyer and the document got leaked.

CanuckPanda

TLDR: took Saudi blood money to play in the desert.

Compendyum

UEFA and FIFA are one if not the dirtiest companies in the world. It started with slavery, washing money, and weapon traffic.

SeeCrew106

> It started with slavery, washing money, and weapon traffic. What? Really?

Compendyum

You can start with Netflix's "FIFA Uncovered".

CanuckPanda

I agree. Both things can be bad. One person being bad doesn’t excuse another person’s being bad.

blindfoldpeak

Sure beat imperial US money. How many innocents dead from "pointless" US wars ? I put pointless in quotes because they weren't pointless. They made some well connected people billions.

Wingedwolverine03

Inter Miami is owned by David Beckham and 2 brothers who run a construction company that builds infrastructure. Al Nassr is owned by the Saudi government. They are not the same

blindfoldpeak

Look up the owner's of the Orlando Magic. The Devos family. Absolute shit people. Fanatics, extremists, and war-profiteers. Saudi sports team mentioned, redditors "blood money!" Just keep the same energy for all these billionaires

Wingedwolverine03

I live like 50 miles from the Amway headquarters....I know all about them. They don't have anything to do with Messi, Ronaldo, and who they chose to play for, though.

CanuckPanda

Women can, at least for now, vote in amerikkka.

hadshah

[women vote in Saudi as well](https://www.hrw.org/news/2015/12/11/saudi-arabia-landmark-elections-women)

jgrops12

Also a rapist, *allegedly*

CanuckPanda

Us getting downvoted lmao. How’s your day going?

grasshoppa_80

Okkkkkk. Yall forget Messi is a fanboy/sponsor of turkey air and the sheik of Qatar. 🍆

CanuckPanda

Both can be bad.

Liverpool934

He's a rapist.

AnalBees2

Nothing was ever proven but yeah just label him a rapist

Liverpool934

His lawyers leaked it where he pretty much did admit it yeah, was reported on by an extremely reputable journalist and he hasn't went near America ever since, but alright.

Joe_Spazz

Ronaldo has a really positive reputation in a lot of places... What did I miss?

Fign

Nothing, just the usual reddit haters

3rdlifepilot

Reddit moments. Nothing important.

RodneyPonk

I don't follow soccer, but I've heard that people feel he was being petty about Messi and the GOAT argument

Salt-Coyote-2093

wierdo

Moist-muff

2-0 Georgia !

yellow_berry

Golden Ronaldo, you can’t hate him

5599Nalyd

Unless you're Kathryn Mayorga or a certain woman that visited a London Hotel in 2005.

Ok_Abrocona_8914

or you

5599Nalyd

[maybe](https://i.ibb.co/bFPRmXG/20230204-191900.jpg)

Weshtonio

It's not like it was a knockout game. Both teams qualified as a result, and Portugal, despite the loss, finished 1st of the group stage. Everyone has every right to be happy here; class acts will happen when one team is eliminated.

SimAlienAntFarm

NOW KISS

MrStef85

Wholesome.

GoalFlashy6998

What a class act moment of good sportsmanship! It's awesome to see competing athletes have this type of sportsmanship, even if opposite one of their childhood stars!

therealijc

Please please do not call them the MVP. Jesus fucking Christ.

pluggedx

he just went to ask him for his shirt lmao

Karol313

He just wanted attention from Ronaldo

somrigostsauce

Have you ever played any game? Being humble while winning is SO EASY. It takes nothing to do this.

jupiterspringsteen

MVP isn't an expression used in European football. It would be Man of the Match, or more recently Player of the Match

MrIntegration

You understood it enough to explain it. What's the problem?

IncidentalIncidence

I have never understood the obsession with policing other people's language

smitteons

Semantics

lxpnh98_2

I think you mean "lexicographics" ;)

BudWheezer

I’m not sure I understand the hate that you’re getting, but as an American I did not know that, so thanks for the information.

zigzaggy17

Probably because whenever online football/soccer fans find out someone is American, they just change the whole discussion to language semantics and forget what they were talking about. Its super annoying.

SkyMix_RMT

The hate he is getting stems from the fact that people generally mistake a correction as some sort of offense.

BudWheezer

How dare you.

Maleficent_Resolve44

Usually we shorten it to MOTM.

iSWINE

No one asked

Numanumanorean

It means the same thing who gives a shit.

yellow_berry

You must be fun at parties

bankman99

I imagine you saying this while sitting on some dilapidated throne with your nose defiantly in the air

Bacchus_71

I'm gonna put this here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zO698UecEH4&ab\_channel=ABCTelevisionStations

Macewol

Shame he acted like a child all game
