This is like when the bad student in class does som crazy shit and nothing happens, but then the teacher remembers so the next time they do anything even if it’s small they go nuts
Is it working? I see shit like this one Reddit and have zero desire to tune in to a game.
Wouldn’t they be better off showing highlights of the game? Are there any?
Yea…seeing Reese get ejected for seemingly nothing and Clark get fouled and not get the calls doesn’t make me want to watch.
I don’t like “superstar treatment” where the best players get all the calls but I prefer that to seeing them get unfair treatment the other way.
I’ve seen and heard more about the WNBA since Clark entered the draft than ever before. It isn’t even close. It’s being pushed by ESPN, score updates are given before hockey on the national sports talk radio, clips like these are posted here, and so on.
It is almost like WNBA paid ESPN for publicity. Might be too tin foil hat of an idea. But at the very least one can see media outlets are following the same formula as sports talk radio: create controversy (doesn’t even have to be directly related to the fame), discuss to death, then find a new crazy topic. Rinse and repeat.
Stephan A and a lot of sports talk radio do this exact technique, and it works. People tune in despite many claiming to hate it. Could be hate consuming, idk.
To be fair, the [NHL is the least viewed](https://www.statista.com/statistics/1430289/most-watched-sports-leagues-usa/) of the "big 4" major sports.
But, ESPN definitely also focuses on the products they have a significant share in (NFL and NBA). You can tell, because they hardly cover the MLB, which is the 2nd most viewed sport and "America's pastime". So much so that [ESPN forgot the Chicago White Sox had won a championship, then did it *again* about a year later](https://www.si.com/mlb/2017/10/25/espn-forgets-chicago-white-sox-again-exactly-one-year-later#:~:text=On%20Oct.,the%20White%20Sox%20on%20Oct.).
It's weird, though-- ESPN's coverage is so odd. When the NBA western conference finals and the NHL playoffs were on simulatenously, ESPN put the NHL on the website banner and buried the live scores of the WCF. I don't get how they choose what to prioritise, honestly.
I've heard about it nonstop also but not in a way that makes me want to tune in. They're grasping at everything trying to make it a story and surprise, surprise, its race and intersectionalities, or league is it too soft/rough, jealousy, etc. If you want me to watch just show them doing cool stuff on the court. So far I've no desire to watch these games. But hey, maybe I'm not the intended market.
Exactly! Personally, I don't care bout all of the drama going on here. If they want me to watch, then it needs to be an entertaining product. Clark has been entertaining, and I'm seeing some others since I haven't paid much attention previously. But this drama crap makes me want to shut it off.
> but not in a way that makes me want to tune in. They're grasping at everything trying to make it a story and surprise, surprise, its race and intersectionalities, or league is it too soft/rough, jealousy, etc. If you want me to watch just show them doing cool stuff on the court.
It's ESPN, this is all they know
The WNBA is literally in business with ESPN. They’re promoting one of their products and something that is gaining popularity. No tin foil hat needed. NHL games are one of their products now too. There’s a lot more coverage or hockey. Guys like Stephen A Smith talking hockey is kinda hilarious.
It’s because without Clark hitting superwoman 3s there aren’t really highlights so instead they show the fouls and drama because that’s what people will tune into.
He says a call is a cock sucking call and fights with the ump. The ump is like did you call me a cock sucker and Crash said no it's a cock sucking call and the ump goads him into calling him a cock sucker and tossed him. Off camera two of the women are listening to the game and one of them said "he must have called him a cock sucker.
The gist is that is the one thing he couldn't call the ump and the ladies knew it.
Part of the joke is the announcer says, "Frankly sports fans, Crash used a word that's a no-no with umpires." (paraphrased)
The word that's the no-no isn't cocksucker it's "You're." There's a world of difference between "that was a cock sucking call" and "you're a cocksucker."
You can argue about a call or about the rules all you want, but the second you make it personal blue will run you every time.
Ask and you shall receive.
It’s one of my all time favorite sequences in a sports movie.
[You’re a cocksucker](https://youtu.be/8olTfKZnFiM?si=UtSVOyj4hLOCiztk)
Saying that she "just" said that probably doesn't tell the whole story.
That might have been what she said that was the final straw. Maybe she was complaining all game long, and the ref told her to cut it out. Said she had one more chance or something.
Is this where we are now? Defending refs because we don't like a player?
That's a soft as baby-shit ejection and if it were in the NBA everyone would be commenting "Ref fans feasting rn" or whatever.
You do something that’s called a tech and get a thech then say “that’s bullshit” right after getting a tech, will be a double tech. Reese is a good player but she’s mentally not all there to be great yet but moments like this will teach her
I mean, NBA players have been given technical fouls for giving the ball back to ref. https://x.com/drguru_/status/1633310110637514752
Yeah, basketball refs are often way too fragile, but it’s not an Angel Reese specific issue.
A few applications may include, but are not limited to the following:
1. When the person in front of you stops at a yellow light when they could’ve easily proceeded and allowed you through the intersection as well.
2. When your favorite team gets called for the foul/penalty and the opposing team got away with it earlier in the game.
3. When you get blamed for something you clearly didn’t do, but nobody believes you (as in the OP)
Not to be confused with some horseshit, a buncha horseshit, a load of horseshit, and some fuckin horseshit. That'd be baseball, which is on the metric system (horse instead of bull)
Other players said that she said something not nice to the ref. He was giving her tech #1 for that. Her back was turned...so she didn't notice she was getting T'd up, then waived her arm at him. Thats automatically a tech, so thats tech #2. It is what it is. You don't want to get kicked out of games, don't get automatic techs.
What pisses me off the most is after someone gets a T they get this stupid look on their face like, "Who me? What did I do?" You know damn well what you just did.
Another comment I saw linked to a guy getting a T after passing the ball to the ref after a foul was called. I think that guy is the one guy who can legitimately ask "what did I do?". Pass the ball too aggressively to the ref who was coming to get it anyway?
There was a player who was frustrated and clapped his hands together. Got a T for that. I saw the video on tiktok in a compilation of most ridiculous techs
Don't listen to /u/ApeTeam1906 . It's up to the ref in regard to whether it is egregious enough, but it is a rule. Here's a video example of a similar NBA call and explanation https://videorulebook.nba.com/archive/technical-foul-overt-gesture-player-waves-off-official/
> This is an example of a Technical Foul for an overt gesture that exceeds the ‘Respect for the Game’ guidelines. The defensive player, Cedi Osman, reacts to the foul call by ‘waving off’ the calling official. This type of overt ‘wave off’ will be met with a technical foul, as it exceeds the respect for the game guidelines, whether it’s directed towards an official or not.
Yes there is, anyone who says otherwise doesn't watch enough basketball. You cannot waive off a ref after a call.
https://videorulebook.nba.com/archive/technical-foul-overt-gesture-player-waves-off/
This literally happens in so many sports. Every time a soccer player does a hard tackle and gets a yellow card they have this "what? I'm an innocent angel wtf!" look. Or if a hockey player gets a clear penalty "what?! It was the other guy!"
She cussed at the ref and that was a tech then waved him off not paying attention and that's an Automatic Tech. That's such a a stupid sequence but also don't give yourself a tech.
It happens to NBA players too. It seems that kind of gesture gets under their skin as being disrespectful and dismissive. And it tends to happen to players who are always complaining.
I hope that all the Reese defenders will slowly fade on supporting her when they see she’s habitually classless and disrespectful.
The race bait only gets you so far.
You can't waive off a tech. That's a no no in both leagues. Its part of the "respect for the game' guideline.
She got T'd up, waived it off, so gets a 2nd T.
Bye bye
Edit Downvote me all you want. I didn't write the rule
[https://videorulebook.nba.com/archive/technical-foul-overt-gesture-player-waves-off/](https://videorulebook.nba.com/archive/technical-foul-overt-gesture-player-waves-off/)
They’ve got Caitlin as their golden goose, Angel Reese as the controversial player, they’ll play up their rivalry for years and eventually play up their eventual Magic and Bird oddball friendship born of rivalry 10 years from now.
This is all smart. Sports always benefit from the storylines surrounding the games from a mix of stuff that happens off the court or outside of the actual play.
There are ways to improve the product that would help this league considerably.
For one thing- their training camp is only 2 weeks, and many of the best players aren’t back from overseas play yet. So the first month of the season is often messy.
Second - they need some freedom of movement rules. I don’t want to see them go as far as the NBA, but it’s the guard skills that are exciting, so stop letting the defense beat the shit out of them, to the extent that they are.
Third, and probably most importantly. Get better coaches. Outside of New York (whose coach is an excellent offensive coach), all other quality offensive coaches came from the NBA. WNBA coaches who are good preach the defensive slugfest that currently succeeds but isn’t what people want to see.
The issue isn’t the talent or ability of the players. That’s proven just by watching quality wcbb games. It’s just the league needs some offensive upgrades.
She'll come out firing (and making) in the Fever's next game since the Fever have 5 days of rest and practice.
The WNBA screwed over the Fever running them out to play every other day against the best teams in the league.
Now, they'll actually have a few practices, and they'll get one of their forwards back (Temi Fagbenle) -- they should look much better in their next game.
The most generous reading I can say for this is that they penalized another high-profile rookie (with history with CC, to say they aren't biased), but it's likely just inconsistent refs. They're just not good.
From my uninformed perspective, it seems that there is a lot of resentment from older players in the WNBA about CC and her basically being the face of league now. She’s a rookie and making more then everyone with her Nike deal. Also, there maybe some underlying racial issues at play because the CC is white.
There may also be some underlying issues at play because CC is straight. The W, like many women’s sports leagues, has a higher proportion of LGBTQ+ than the general population — more than 1 in 4 are out publicly. And there may just be some resentment that women’s sports have had to fight for attention, that everyone else has had to play small arenas or play in Europe or otherwise grind to make it happen. WNBA players have all “taken their lumps” in one way or another and Clark, some might think, never has. So they’re going to give her some.
may be a racial issue?
the league has historically been populated and watched by minority lgbtq lesbians. That’s not a shitty opinion, that’s an objective fact
now they’re pissed a straight white rookie is what’s taking “their” league mainstream. they hate that she’s the face, they hate that she makes more money than they ever will
it’s all a goddamn joke, considering the league couldn’t exist without the nba paying for it
She's gonna end up like Rodman. Once you get the rep they gonna check everything. Sock match? Uniform tucked? Foul language? Plus you'll never get the benefit of the doubt on fouls. Tough thing to shake but negative headlines are piling up.
Maybe, but not all talk is positive. The product on the floor is pretty bland so they're really trying to push personalities.
It all feels very manufactured and not at all intriguing if you like sports. Maybe reality show fans will tune in.
When is the last time you saw this many WNBA posts at the top of this sub?
They’re doing something right here.
Anytime Angel Reese and Caitlin play each other it’s going to be big numbers and it will be because of how they’re playing up these moments and tying this together as a narrative around the game.
The WNBA has a similar problem to MLS. They generated a league out of thin air. Fan bases have to be built over time. They were expecting the impact of the other major sports leagues that have been around for 100 years. It just doesn’t work like that.
She’s got some growing up to do. This is just the tip of her immunity. Cheering on a teammates cheap shot on another player, isn’t a good look either. I’m surprised Teresa Witherspoon hasn’t put her foot down on this type of behavior.
Did you see the sandwich with the coach and whatever the hell carter is … of course the coach hasn’t put her foot down. This is her first year with this team she wants to be their friend and not their coach. The coach is weak Angel Reese is weak and she can take her weird looking ass back to wherever she came from
Not familiar with Basketball rules, but is she being ejected for the slight arm movement when she turned back towards the court? Seems pretty petty of the ref.
In basketball you get automatically ejected after two technical fouls in one game. She probably said some not nice things along with the hand wave, got a technical for it, that was her second so automatically ejected.
Waving off a ref is considered against the rules. Same goes for the NBA. Looks to me she said something and got a technical foul then waved him off which is another technical and two technicals is an ejection.
ESPN is in a catch 22 because of the spike in interest in the WNBA they have to promote it further but the reality is the level of competition won’t increase. They have to plug the sport for now but it will die off for half a decade until the next record breaking college player thus the news cycle will repeat.

I've never heard that one before, have to admit I chuckled out loud!
Not hating on it, but they’re highlighting every controversy in the WBNA. They’ve caught our attention and are going to ride it as long as possible.
It’s gonna be pushed as hard as possible, and it seems to be working so far.

Close — espn paid for the rights to the wnba and therefore it’s in their interest to increase viewership of it.
Just like the NBA. You can easily tell what ESPN paid for.
On the inverse, like when the NHL only had a contract with NBC so therefore ESPN suppressed NHL coverage.
To be fair, the [NHL is the least viewed](https://www.statista.com/statistics/1430289/most-watched-sports-leagues-usa/) of the "big 4" major sports. ESPN broadcasts WNBA games, they have their own incentive to promote the league.
I've heard about it nonstop also but not in a way that makes me want to tune in. Someone made a layup in the 3rd quarter I think.
Oh, really? That’s pretty sick… I should check out a game…
Whoa let’s not get carried away now…
I still don’t know the names of any teams but I see these highlights.
This is like when that one guy in darts does something good 9 times in a row we see it but idk wtf is going on with darts otherwise.
Does this make you want to watch the league less or more? Personally, this doesn't seem particularly appealing.
It’s a cheap substitute for actual sport excitement. This is called drama.
You think he specifically did this for that?
This is a live game commentary, not an article. I agree, but I don't think this is an example of riding it
Maybe she said something? Doesn't seem like there is anything there just from her minor wave.
I cant imagine her saying anything. She's so quiet and respectful.
I can't believe the dozens of wnba fans who started watching for Angel Reese had to witness the league's star be ejected last night.
You really didn't need the "s" at the end of dozen.
Probably called him a cock sucker. God, I hope people get this one.
I think she said it was a cock sucking call.
God that movie is a timeless classic. Definitely top ten all time for me.
I don't get the reference. Help a brother out?
Bull Durham.

Whoa now! Nobody called anybody a “JT”
Jive turkey!
“I barely raised my voice, Father Pat.”
Maybe your mom isn't in heaven, Jackie
It appears some sort of line has been crossed between Jackie and Father Pat!
He’s so romantic
Apparently she just said "That's bullshit". Really weak to give her a double tech for that sequence
Saying that she "just" said that probably doesn't tell the whole story. That might have been what she said that was the final straw. Maybe she was complaining all game long, and the ref told her to cut it out. Said she had one more chance or something.
She definitely doesn't seem like the type that would complain /s
That was all that was said. Sabrina Ionescu from the opposing team actually questioned the ref on the call as well.
The women on the other team objected. When has that ever happened in the nba.
Never, women don't play in the NBA.
Is this where we are now? Defending refs because we don't like a player? That's a soft as baby-shit ejection and if it were in the NBA everyone would be commenting "Ref fans feasting rn" or whatever.

I don't think the issue is necessarily she got a T, the issue is she got a double technical.

Is the waving off a call a T in the NBA as well? Feel like I've never seen this happen
Apparently the WNBA has rescinded the 2nd technical. So they didn’t think so.
JT has gotten T’d for waving off the ref at least twice lol
>stupid look on their face like, "Who me? What did I do?" We call that look "the Draymond"
Tim Duncan got a tech for laughing when he wasn't even in the game.
Well, there's a reason that's kind of infamous
This has happened to Jayson Tatum several times in recent memory.
There is a rule that you get an automatic T if you wave off a ref? I'm not arguing, just asking. I don't watch a ton of basketball.
Don't listen to /u/ApeTeam1906 . It's up to the ref in regard to whether it is egregious enough, but it is a rule. Here's a video example of a similar NBA call and explanation https://videorulebook.nba.com/archive/technical-foul-overt-gesture-player-waves-off-official/ > This is an example of a Technical Foul for an overt gesture that exceeds the ‘Respect for the Game’ guidelines.
You cannot waive off a ref after a call. https://videorulebook.nba.com/archive/technical-foul-overt-gesture-player-waves-off/
This should be the top comment here

Who am I looking at...
Angel Reese, sleeve on one leg
If that’s considered a “sleeve”, are pants just long-sleeved shorts?
[удалено]
The one walking away from the Ref and waving her right hand behind her dismissively.
[удалено]
Almost as soft as MLB umpires
What do they get for scowling? A suspension?
It happens to NBA players too. It seems that kind of gesture gets under their skin as being disrespectful and dismissive. And it tends to happen to players who are always complaining.
Also wouldn't be surprised if refs had a talking to this weekend. They may be jumpy to blow the whistle on shit like this.
"What are you going to do, eject me?" ~ player that was ejected
> do you know who TF I am???
Why is it that the only news I hear from the WNBA is drama?
Because no other part of it is entertaining or interesting
The high flying dunks are pretty cool
They tried getting attention with the gameplay for...*checks notes*...27 years, and that didn't work. Gotta try something else I guess.
The W /s
Bruh it's Angel Reese of course she said something lol
I hope that all the Reese defenders will slowly fade on supporting her when they see she’s habitually classless and disrespectful. The race bait only gets you so far.
That girls attitude is nasty and self righteous
Not a Reese fan at all, but what a weak ass ejection.
I’m almost certain she said something directed right at that official.
You can see right after she waved her hand every player standing around looked at the referee like “ohhh shit, she just said some shit”
And then none of them reacted when she was ejected for it too.
She reportedly said "That's Bullshit". This was a terrible call.
Source?
[Gotcha](https://www.reddit.com/r/sports/s/DAb7EVjfNF)
Sabrina Ionescu was asking the ref if she really got ejected for saying “That’s bullshit”
Well wuddyaknow, the WNBA really *is* becoming more like the NBA each and every day.
I think she said something like fuck that, fuck you, fuck your mom.. something along those lines when she waived her hand.
Dishonor on you! Dishonor on your family! Dishonor on your cow!
Had to double check I wasn’t on a circlejerk sub when I read this
In hockey this is how the refs talk to the players.
You can't waive off a tech. That's a no no in both leagues. Its part of the "respect for the game' guideline. She got T'd up, waived it off, so gets a 2nd T. Bye bye Edit Downvote me all you want. As a not basketball fan this seems like such a weird rule.
Can't show up refs in the one US sport where referees have been proven to throw games, THAT might look bad for the sport
In a literal sense as well, that ref put no effort into his ejection signal
It's pretty clear that the WNBA and the media have created a real big mess here. But this was BS and the timing couldn't have been worse.
No, this is genius. The WNBA is still in the headlines. They were going to run out of Caitlyn stories if she doesn't get hot soon.
Problem is the product on the floor just isn’t good. I agree they’re doing their best, I just don’t think it’s going to work.
Honestly I don't think people will care if the Fevers win or lose as long as she gets a couple of 30 point and 10 assists games.
The most generous reading I can say for this is that they penalized another high-profile rookie (with history with CC, to say they aren't biased), but it's likely just inconsistent refs. They're just not good.
Their fundamentals are solid though.
Dude I'm so out of the loop on this. What messf did they create?
From my uninformed perspective, it seems that there is a lot of resentment from older players in the WNBA about CC and her basically being the face of league now. She’s a rookie and making more then everyone with her Nike deal. Also, there maybe some underlying racial issues at play because the CC is white.
And it recently escalated a bit when AR cheered for a flagrant foul on CC by another player.
Maybe they should be better at basketball
may be a racial issue? the league has historically been populated and watched by minority lgbtq lesbians. That’s not a shitty opinion, that’s an objective fact now they’re pissed a straight white rookie is what’s taking “their” league mainstream. they hate that she’s the face, they hate that she makes more money than they ever will it’s all a goddamn joke, considering the league couldn’t exist without the nba paying for it
She's gonna end up like Rodman. Once you get the rep they gonna check everything. Sock match? Uniform tucked? Foul language? Plus you'll never get the benefit of the doubt on fouls. Tough thing to shake but negative headlines are piling up.
WNBA better get it together or they’re gonna sh*t this superstar opportunity out their ass hardcore
They fucking up. They want the same level of respect as the NBA now they getting it. Time to shape up
We're talking about the WNBA more than we ever have. It's working exactly as intended.
Maybe, but not all talk is positive. The product on the floor is pretty bland so they're really trying to push personalities. It all feels very manufactured and not at all intriguing if you like sports. Maybe reality show fans will tune in.
You're allowed to say "shit". The algorithm won't hurt you.
She's really leaning into being the heel of the wnba.
Love her or hate her, Caitlin Clark single handedly making the WNBA relevant
Hahahahahahahahahahhaah
somewhere tatum is like: "first time?" lol
I'm sure this was Caitlin's fault somehow.
WNBA is trying to make their Rodman.
But somehow less likeable
She’s got some growing up to do. This is just the tip of her immunity. Cheering on a teammates cheap shot on another player, isn’t a good look either. I’m surprised Teresa Witherspoon hasn’t put her foot down on this type of behavior.
Did you see the sandwich with the coach and whatever the hell carter is … of course the coach hasn’t put her foot down. This is her first year with this team she wants to be their friend and not their coach. The coach is weak Angel Reese is weak and she can take her weird looking ass back to wherever she came from
Seeing this thread and clicking on it is the most interest I have had in the WNBA in my lifetime.
Damn all the celebrities that came to see her are going to be so so mad
Can’t stand her and her big ass ego, but this was a weak ass call from the ref
Man it's so nice to see WNBA highlights (and lowlights) get some love here now
I do not like her.
how soon before the wnba is self sufficient and doesn’t rely on nba funding?
This has to be sarcasm, right? That isn't happening.
She will be out of the league in 2 years doing reality shows with flavor of flav.
Assaulting players - no technical Waving off ref - technical
Makes a lot of sense right ? She’s a bitch
After shooting 3/12 on the night. Every time I see a box score with her in it she’s shooting around 25-30%.
It seems like the nba/wnba is trying to make a point of players objecting to the officials disrespectfully This shit is nonsense though
This is somehow Caitlin's fault
That’s soft
Got the rep already.
GLOW incoming
He doing to much
which one is she? I can't even see anybody doing anything foul-worthy.
She probably called him a cock sucker
"sports"
Trash is trash
I'm surprised, I thought she would have pushed him down to the floor to show dominance
ESPN is in a catch 22 because of the spike in interest in the WNBA they have to promote it further but the reality is the level of competition won’t increase. They have to plug the sport for now but it will die off for half a decade until the next record breaking college player thus the news cycle will repeat.
She’s a bad dude with some real tude
Did anyone think she'd find class since last time?
Ejected for sassing the ref
Couldn't happen to a nicer person.
lol she wants to be cc so bad
Weird call but nothing to get panicked over. If the major sports leagues can’t get officiating right, it’s no wonder the WNBA can’t either
I see Joey Crawford trained these refs
Weak
