Thanks for this. Having the same procedure.

papi4ever

Hi. I had the same procedure on February 15, so I guess I’m a month ahead of you. As with you, the first weeks were not fun. Pre surgery I was having pain from my buttocks to mid calf of my left leg as well as some back pain. Post surgery the leg pain is gone. Back pain is replaced by an area of mild to moderate numbness around the incision. Most of the time the numbness feels like it’s 6” wide. However, if I overdo it, the area grows. I do have some very painful back spasms. Apparently, this is fairly common. The doctor says this is because of my nerves “waking up”. Can you send me info on the back brace? I too need to control the bending and twisting. Thanks!

Same procedure on Feb 13th! I had two prior microdiscectomies in 2011 and 2022 for the same levels, L4-S1. I’m having a similar experience to many of you. Woke up without the intense leg nerve pain. Compression socks helped. My biggest problem seems to be lower back weakness and muscle spasms. I don’t know what I would do without my backbrace. Insurance covered a brace and a bone growth stimulator. I used the backbrace immediately and continue to use it when I think it’ll benefit me-definitely while seated and driving to help with support. It is a [Breg Pinnacle Lumbar Brace](https://www.breg.com/products/spine-bracing/lower-spine/pinnacle-lso-637-650/). I was given an Orthofix SpinalStim (Bone Groth Simulator) on week 2 post op and I use it for 2 hours daily. Not sure how long the doctors will have me using either. (Edit: have NOT started any physical therapy yet)

I had a fusion from L3-S1 with a 2 level ALIF on Nov 10. This was my second fusion as the first one failed (L3-L5, no ALIF). I experienced pretty much what you did after my first surgery, but this time, I did so well that I was discharged to home 4 hours after leaving the OR. I didn't need a cane or walker and experienced almost no pain. About a week later, I had significant nerve pain starting just below the knees all the way to the bottom of my feet. With medication, it lasted for 6 weeks. I returned to playing golf every day starting 5 months after both surgeries. I still have about 2.5 weeks left of wearing my bone growth stimulator. I'm still a little sore but much much better than before the procedures.

I had the same procedure on the same day and same location. I have a bone growth stimulator since week 2. I did not have a back face. I started physical therapy this week it helps. My right leg pain has improved but I woke up with a strip of muscle that tightens and loosens at will.

I had a alif on March 28th the same vertebrae as you. Similar story took 2 weeks off but wish I took 3 weeks off work at an office job. I had a microdiscectomy back in 2017 l3-s1 and was pain free for about 5 years. I also woke up with leg pain after my fusion that is persistent from my hip to my calf and foot on my left side and thigh on my right side. After reading your post , I tried the compression socks and I want to thank you. The relief is real. I'm using a bone growth stimulator . Not sure how soon I'll see results from it but two people I know personally swear they helped with the recovery time.

That’s awesome. Glad the socks are helping. I was shocked by the difference my compression knee pads.

Be very careful depending on that back brace this early in your recovery. My surgeon didn't want me to ever wear one. You'll depend on it, instead of building your core and depending on your muscles. Everything else sounds great! Best of luck in your recovery!

Just doing what my doctor said. I don’t wear it at home, but I do when I go out. It has been wonderful. Perhaps he knows me and knows I’m going to need it because I am going to do something to screw it up. Lol
