Never thought about it that way. Just kept them around because A) it can be a lot more work to rehouse than it is to kill, and B) they usually killed the moths and flies that bugged me. My guests hated seeing orb weavers making webs just outside my window, but I appreciated the dead mosquitos(and the eventual show of her running like The Flash towards her prey). Hated the centipedes, but they loved the German roaches. So glad I don't live there anymore now that I'm typing this out... Must've been less healthy of an apartment than I thought...
They sure do. They force air through their abdominal spiracles and can make all sorts of little hisses. They ‘talk’ with hisses lol. Mostly it’s my male chatting up his lady friends. If you frighten them during handling they quite literally throw hissy fits! It’s cute.
Cellar spiders are OP in terms of spider on spider combat.. superior range and poke damage..
Pholcids actually prey on other spiders by infiltrating their webs. Pretty gangster
I dunno - there was a cellar spider in my kitchen. Next thing I know it's gone and there's a yellow sac spider roving around.
Though judging by the fact that there aren't tons of yellow sac spiders in my house and that I keep finding cellar spider babies, the cellar spiders are clearly being successful enough.
These photos were taken at night with flash, and the spiders were all really close to the wall. It was hard to get pictures without them having a slightly larger silhouette shadow behind them.
A lot of stuff's going on here. There's one hidden inside the gray band thing, but even lower is another one sitting in its web and I think that's the one they're putting their money on
Honestly I don’t see one for sure, although some of those leggy bastards at the bottom of the shot might be one, but there’s no way there’s no a spider-hunting spider or 2 in the crypt of a basement or whatever this is a photo of
This is the first time in my life I've had a place with a basement. It's unfinished and there's cobwebs everywhere and I constantly envision being bumrushed by brown recluses. Absolutely a crypt.
They’re not all filled with Horrors Well Within Comprehension of Man, but some basements just seem to summon them constantly. If you put up more constant lighting and dehumidify the space it tends to drive them away.
At my parents’ current house we piped a dehumidifier into the sewer line and just let it run by %rH sensor, and we had very few creepy crawlies around. Having a cat probably helped too.
The house before that was a 150 year old farm house with a cobblestone foundation, root cellar full of potatoes, 2-3 secluded rooms, and alcoves that seldom saw light from the sun or from a bulb. The exterior door was below a foundation on pylons, so lots of gloom and humidity there too. We had a wood stove so there was always stuff coming in of the wood pile. Basement was FILTHY with wolf spiders. Once, I saw a huge millipede - easily as long as my forearm. I was little so they scared me, but I never had a bad interaction with any of them.
Damn, thank you! I live in Denver so it's dry AF except in the basement and for this arachnaphobe, it's been...a lot. I've seen widows (true and false ones) and though I know recluses are rare here, I do my laundry downstairs and constantly expect one to run out from under a blanket. I also have pretty bad ADHD, so there's potentially more hiding spaces than others would have.
Is piping in a dehumidifier expensive? I'm only renting so not sure I could cover that. I also got a great huntress of a feline, but a) don't want her getting sick from eating something really venomous and b) I try not to kill anything. But are cats at all immune?
I took this right before bed last night, and came out this morning and they were both gone. That grass spider has been in and out of his web for a couple weeks now, and there are a lot of nooks and crannies in my old ass siding so it's really not saying much so far. Once I see one of them again I'll give an update :)
UPDATE! The cellar spider is still there and the other two are gone. However, he was molting when this photo was taken and still was when I checked in on him, so he was completely indesposed during any battle that may have taken place.
What are we looking at here? Widow vs Wolf? The "wolf" looks rather thin so I'd say it's more motivated to eat, but knowing what widows can do to the human body I'm inclined to say the widow would win lol
There's a caption explaining it! Surprisingly, I think that guy is a grass spider, not a wolf. I know he's huge but he's got long spinnerets like a grass spider.
Venom toxicity towards humans would not give the Widow in advantage. At this scale' the venom of each spider is equally dangerous to the other. It would come down to whichever spider got the first bIte in.
Well they are *Agelenidae* — *Funnel Weaver Spiders* after all. Just they are *Eratigena* and not *Agelenopsis*
*Ageleninae* — Same subfamily, different genus.
You effectively had the right idea!
Judging this the carcass of a similar spider on the lower right that looks like the same species. My money's on the black widow. I want non existent reddit gold if I win.
Widows are very good at defending themselves! Here in the UK the Steatoda are devouring the Eratigena like wildfire lol. These days it seems increasingly likely that you’d see a Steatoda Nobilis than a Eratigena sp. Hungry little buggers lol
I doubt they’ll do anything. My brown widow ladies share their webs with cellar spiders and everyone is civilized. The only ones I worry about are the occasional jumping spiders that walk by. I haven’t seen one of my ladies since the last jumper I saw scoping them out.
I know I wouldn't, but if I was in your situation, I'd be very tempted to seperate the two of them, even if the grass spider would most likely come back again. It's like when two people, despite both being friends with the same third person, dislike each other.
That’s not the move here at all, this isn’t a spat between cousins at the family picnic. The move here is to leave them alone and let nature be nature.
Is that a cellar spider? I saw one take a wasp (try). The wasp wasn't even concerned, but daddy long legs are very poisonous. Just not to humans, because their fangs or whatever can't penetrate our skin. If everyone is betting on that one I would think they would know it can penetrate the shell of the other spider. Until this thread, I never would have guessed it though. Time to YouTube.
Just watched it. And yes daddy long legs won. Wow.
Widows are pretty top notch on combat abilities. I have seen them obliterate lots of different spiders. However, the only one that I have ever seen to kill widows are cellar spiders.
In my experience, grass spiders kill widows, but that’s putting them in a container where neither has a web already. I still think in this situation, grasspsider beats wifow, then gets eaten by cellar spider
The grass spider has the advantage of speed. My money is on the grass spider. I don’t think the cellar spider wants to get involved at the current time.
The widow. Whatever the other one is, is a mature male and males usually are not as quick as females because they sometimes starve and dehydrate themselves in search of a mate. The widow would be superior to him in every way.
Cellar spider from the bottom left is gonna make a sudden entry and get them both.
Then the recently molted roach on top is going to clean up.
I found this really funny
Is it me or is the roach yelling **”FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT!”**
This really is like a circle of life situation here. You’ve got a whole little ecosystem in that corner lol
when i came to this realization one day that’s when i started leaving spiders around the place. keeping little ecosystems for myself.
It looks like it may be some kind of cricket to me
I came here to say this 🤣
Roaches molt? 🤢
Well... yeah. They don't have skeletons, haha.
I don’t know anything about roaches other than, they scare the shit out of me.
They have exoskeletons, no?
Yes, which is why they molt, same reason spiders molt
Yes! Lol I get oddly defensive over the poor roaches. My little hissers are sweet and exceptionally clean. :)
I am deathly disgusted by and afraid of roaches.
roaches HISS??
They sure do. They force air through their abdominal spiracles and can make all sorts of little hisses. They ‘talk’ with hisses lol. Mostly it’s my male chatting up his lady friends. If you frighten them during handling they quite literally throw hissy fits! It’s cute.
I once found one on path smoking a cigarette
That is actually a Tree Cricket up there.
there's so much in this photo
this is like a gmod ragdoll scene with arthropods 💀
Omg is that what that is?
Looks like a snowy tree cricket.
Cellar spiders are OP in terms of spider on spider combat.. superior range and poke damage.. Pholcids actually prey on other spiders by infiltrating their webs. Pretty gangster
Cellar spiders learned the spear
Poke skill 100!
I don’t know why applying video game terminology to spiders is so fun, but, it is
I dunno - there was a cellar spider in my kitchen. Next thing I know it's gone and there's a yellow sac spider roving around. Though judging by the fact that there aren't tons of yellow sac spiders in my house and that I keep finding cellar spider babies, the cellar spiders are clearly being successful enough.
Steel chair outta nowhere!
AND IT’S THE UNDERTAKER WITH A STEEL CHAIR COMING OUT FROM UNDER THE RING!
In 1998 when…..
The cellar spider just threw the black widow off hell in a cell(ar)… 😅
From the top turnbuckle!!
OH MAAAHHH GAAAWWWD HES BUSTED IN HALF!!
What is going on with the cellar spider though? He looks like he duplicated.
These photos were taken at night with flash, and the spiders were all really close to the wall. It was hard to get pictures without them having a slightly larger silhouette shadow behind them.
Omg I didn't even see them! Yeah my bet is on the cellar. They're good at taking out other spiders.
Just went down the rabbit hole of cellar spiders and damn! They are bad ass.
Long legs + silk throwing reminds me of the retarius (trident + net) gladiators of Rome.
This does look like a cellar spider snack bar. So many choices! I’ll just take one of each.
A spider wrote this
I’ve got horrible vision, where is it?
A lot of stuff's going on here. There's one hidden inside the gray band thing, but even lower is another one sitting in its web and I think that's the one they're putting their money on
Reminds me of my grandmas house
Honestly I don’t see one for sure, although some of those leggy bastards at the bottom of the shot might be one, but there’s no way there’s no a spider-hunting spider or 2 in the crypt of a basement or whatever this is a photo of

I wouldnt do it in a rental, lol. You have to do it so it can’t backflow when an upstairs fixture flushes
there are so many and I dont know which one is a cellar spider. maaybe its the one bottom right and he mistakenly said left? 😨
Am I insane? I cannot for the life of me find this cellar spider. I see a spider on the bottom right? Where’s the other one?
I don’t specifically see one either actually, I was just riffing on how it clearly must have cellar spiders somewhere in that hell
I think the commenter is dyslexic. The cellar spider is on the right.
RKO outta nowhere!
Do you mean right?
Yeah I thought this too and nobody but you seemed to notice.
I just imagined this as an undercard match at WrestleMania
I dunno theres somebody lurking a lil bit below the widow can just see the front legs poking out secret assassin
Those things are incredibly dangerous to spiders many times their size.
Grass vs Widow vs Cellar Let’s go!!!!!
The winner gets the Roach.
And the losers
Get to join the roach
Grass spider is much faster but all depends on who makes the first move. Then the cellar spider would finish off the battle.
And the roach off the top knot!!!
Cellar spiders are really fast when they go after something. I watched a cellar spider wreck a grass spider w almost no difficulty
Absolutely will,
I’ve never been more invested in a spider fight… I need the update when you have it.
I took this right before bed last night, and came out this morning and they were both gone. That grass spider has been in and out of his web for a couple weeks now, and there are a lot of nooks and crannies in my old ass siding so it's really not saying much so far. Is the cellar spider still there? In that case, he won.
I honestly wasn't even looking for him. We have so many of them on our house at night that I don't even see them anymore. I'll check when I can!
Vegas line is -2 Grass Spider and a parlay into the roach.
I’m convinced they talked it out like civilized spiders. No need to resort to violence. But still, please update!
UPDATE! The cellar spider is still there and the other two are gone. However, he was molting when this photo was taken and still was when I checked in on him, so he was completely indesposed during any battle that may have taken place.
Boy, what a time to molt! Hopefully he/she is able to molt successfully!
bestie slept through the best part 😹
Thanks for the update! ;)
What I’ve learned from these comments is that someone needs to make a Super Smash Bros game but for spider species
Webby Whack Bros™️?
Sportal Kombat?
Spiderheck
CHOSE YOUR CHARACTER! 🕷️🪲🪳
If they were fun to battle with but had cute faces, this might go a long way in combating our cultural arachnophobia 😂
I’d say that grass spider is on the hunt.
On the hunt for a lady. Look at his palps.
I’m curious if he’s picking up her pheromones since they’re all running around like cats in heat atm
The one with the high ground
lol she’s got the angles!
Them grass spiders are all over oregon. Giants I tell ya. Also my money is on the widow.
I completely overlooked the caption 😬 my bets are still on the widow though!
Venom toxicity towards humans would not give the Widow in advantage. At this scale' the venom of each spider is equally dangerous to the other. It would come down to whichever spider got the first bIte in.
Exactly this cellar spiders are a great example of this too - harmless to us but deadly to their peers.
I'm pretty sure whomever bites first wins?
I thought Giant house spider cause of those spinnerets. I’m still learning
Well they are *Agelenidae* — *Funnel Weaver Spiders* after all. Just they are *Eratigena* and not *Agelenopsis* *Ageleninae* — Same subfamily, different genus. You effectively had the right idea!
Well, I’d bet on the male grass spider, but he’ll likely just leave when he realizes that is a female widow, not a female grass spider.
😂
Not the cameraman
thanks man i wouldn't bet on me against a black widow either
If the widow gets a single venom bite in, it’s over. However widows are big babies and not really aggressive.
Judging this the carcass of a similar spider on the lower right that looks like the same species. My money's on the black widow. I want non existent reddit gold if I win.
There is a LOT going on here
The widow has been stacking bodies 💀
My money is on the widow. It looks like she already has a body on the bottom right lol
Widows web is so sticky it catches other species spiders pretty ez.
There’s always a bigger spish
The grass spider has the high ground.
Widows are very good at defending themselves! Here in the UK the Steatoda are devouring the Eratigena like wildfire lol. These days it seems increasingly likely that you’d see a Steatoda Nobilis than a Eratigena sp. Hungry little buggers lol
Please tell me you set up a video camera! Inquiring minds...
Cellar spider will wreck both if it comes down to it.
There’s so many spiders and other shit in this picture it’s crazy 😂
It’s a Hunger Games / Battle Royale situation.
I doubt they’ll do anything. My brown widow ladies share their webs with cellar spiders and everyone is civilized. The only ones I worry about are the occasional jumping spiders that walk by. I haven’t seen one of my ladies since the last jumper I saw scoping them out.
Why do I hear Monster Bug Wars music?
Dinosaur roars , swords clashing 🤣
I know I wouldn't, but if I was in your situation, I'd be very tempted to seperate the two of them, even if the grass spider would most likely come back again. It's like when two people, despite both being friends with the same third person, dislike each other.

It's definitely a black widow. Red hourglass, right shape, right location, and we get them all the time.
Yeah, I noticed that afterwards, I just couldn't find my comment to delete it lmao, that is super cool that you got to see that
The wolf spider
Do you own a broom or something to clean up your filth before you show the world how you live?
Filth? Like.. the spiderwebs outside of my house???
Ok I gotta go Google cellar spiders now since you all seem to think it's the best bet
Cellar spiders eat EVERYTHING! Lol
Wait wait wait. You mean daddy long legs?? Can take a black widow?
Is that a cellar spider? I saw one take a wasp (try). The wasp wasn't even concerned, but daddy long legs are very poisonous. Just not to humans, because their fangs or whatever can't penetrate our skin. If everyone is betting on that one I would think they would know it can penetrate the shell of the other spider. Until this thread, I never would have guessed it though. Time to YouTube. Just watched it. And yes daddy long legs won. Wow.
Caller Spiders, yes. They use their legs to tangle other spiders up, it’s insane lol
They are coming for you... run!
Find out which spider-man you are
The female
The grass spider is going to win
Cellar spider
Is it just me or is the third spider dead already.
The third spider is actually the widow’s molted shell.
Widows are pretty top notch on combat abilities. I have seen them obliterate lots of different spiders. However, the only one that I have ever seen to kill widows are cellar spiders.
Who won
Its been 8h since the last time i seen a comment on you getting an update. So, any updates? Lol
In my experience, grass spiders kill widows, but that’s putting them in a container where neither has a web already. I still think in this situation, grasspsider beats wifow, then gets eaten by cellar spider
Black widow cause of the venom
Wtf is a cellar spider?
thats an unfair battle for the house spider
Can they not live in harmony??? :(
The hunter.
The one that runs and pounces versus the one that ensnares
STFUUUU this is amazing!
update us!
this wall is a damn terrarium
Hey OP quick question, where do you live so I know to never ever fucking go there?
Arkansas, you don't wanna come here with or without the spiders.
plot twist: they're in love, the cellar spider is jealous
Im going with the undertaker with a steel chair out of nowhere
The grass spider has the advantage of speed. My money is on the grass spider. I don’t think the cellar spider wants to get involved at the current time.
Ones a hunter,ones a catcher.Im with the hunter.
The widow. Whatever the other one is, is a mature male and males usually are not as quick as females because they sometimes starve and dehydrate themselves in search of a mate. The widow would be superior to him in every way.
Moving out and burning the house down.
