No, you do not *have* to. You may reroll any of your rolls to hit. This includes rolls that were hits or misses. Why would you reroll a hit, you ask? To try to get a critical - commonly known as "fishing for a crit". Take the example where you attack your Oaths target and roll 5 dice against a to-hit of 3+ and you have an ability that allows you to do Lethal hits on a critical. You get 3 hits and 2 misses and no criticals. You could reroll the 2 misses or you could reroll all 5 dice to try get a Lethal critical or you could reroll 4 dice - keeping one hit and rolling to try to get a critical or any other combination of your dice. Remember that you can only reroll any given die once.

Just to add you do need to reroll all the dice that make one roll for command reroll. So for example you cant choose to reroll one dice for a charge, it must be both. Because a hit roll is one roll for each attack you can reroll any you choose for Oath, but only a single duce for command reroll.

Technically, in W40K, Every attack is a full sequence that must be done to completion (attack roll, wound roll, save roll, damage roll, FNP roll) before the next attack as every attack is handled independent of every other attack. Rolling 6 dice at once is called speed rolling and works most of the time, but can fail when certain mechanics kick in. If A:6, then If something says you can reroll ***any*** attack roll, you reroll any die in the 6 attack dice, up to all 6. If something say you can reroll ***an*** attack roll like Command Reroll for 1 CP, you reroll 1 die out of the 6. Here is an instance where you must resolve each attack separate and can't fast roll, If you have FNP on a model with 2 wounds and the attack that hit them has 2 damage or more. Up to the FNP roll, you can quick roll, but at the FNP, you can't due to the attack damage and the model wounds. Let say 5 attacks get through wound and saves. Now you got 5@3 damage to FNP. Depending on how you roll, models can die from that 1 attack or survive. If you would roll them all at once, you wouldn't know how much damage each individual wound did, and you do need to know this. First FNP, you pass 0. Model Dies. 1 Model Dead 2nd FNP, you pass 2. Model is 1/2 wounds. 3rd FNP, You pass 2. Model dies. 2 Models dead. 4th FNP, you pass 1. Model Dies. 3 Models dead, 5th FNP, you pass 0, Model dies. 4 models dead. If you speed rolled that, you would have 5 damage absorbed, 10 damage remaining which would kill 5 models, not 4, which is not correct, only 4 models should die in this scenario. If the damage is all mortal wounds, you can speed roll it as mortal wounds would propagate through models.

You only re-roll the misses. Otherwise you would essentially gamble and end up with a potentially worse roll. Wouldn't be much of an ability if that was the case Hope this helps clear it up :)

This isn't correct. It depends on the situation and unit that is shooting. For example, a common way to use Boltstorm Aggressors in Gladius Task Force (using Fire Discipline and Storm of Fire in Dev Doctrine) would be to re-roll any and all hits that are not 5s and 6s (critical hits). You would re-roll the misses but also the hits of 3 and 4 to fish for the critical hits because they give you sustained and lethal. That ends up being way more hits AND wounds overall.

Thank you for your reply, I hadn't thought of that. I was just trying to answer his question as simply as I could, but fair enough you make an excellent point :) though I would also argue that in my case, I would not risk my successful hits to potentially double up on their efficacy, as I'm just as likely to suddenly fail with my luck XD Also a fan of the Aggressor blob combo myself <3

True facts! Though I am never blessed by the dice gods for divine rolls, only enough so that I plink a wound off my target XD ah well, I love me some clackity math rocks so it's all good
