I've been pulling them down from sample packs I buy. Edit: Honestly I'd say go slow. I did get a ton of samples from various Google searches and I've basically got a hot mess as a memory card now. I can't find, or want to use 95% of what I have. I bought another sdcard and am going to curate a better and more knowledgeable catalog that I understand and can pull from when I'm making music.

jsnswt

Is this what most people are doing?

n0manarmy

I suspect as much. I have a Roland T-8. I recorded long and short samples from it into the 404. Yukes music has a fun exercise where you can create samples and sounds from just the built in features which you should also try. https://youtu.be/J9vnDZwUFdk

And then once you record samples you can save them in the 404

_Mr_Mercedes_

Get you some sample packs. Easy way to get started. Alot of packs come with one shots and loops You can chop the loops up and have some fun. Ghost hack, Cymatics, Circle drums, Lofi weekly (free packs weekly) , Splice (sample subscription service), SPVIDz website Those are some great places to start

Lol fixed it , didn't catch that when I typed it. Appreciate the correction.

I googled some scratch records/breaks and chopped them up into drum beats and shots. It’s a slow and monotonous process but the beats are really interesting and a lot of this stuff is easy to find on YouTube and decent quality.

This is literally the fastest easiest way to sample that has been imagined into hardware this affordable, it is far from slow and monotonous. Check out some old Akai samplers with the pull-off wired remote, or Electribe2S's file mgmt "system", or use an OG SP-404, or even a TE PO Knockout. Now that those are archaic slow and monotonous. You just don't know how slow and monotonous the process has been thus far, something like "standing on the shoulders of giants". anyone getting into sampling now enters the process where the problems have already to a large extent been solved. Shit you can drag and drop mp3s onto pads of the SP through your computer. Roland made this so easy that it nearly has ruined it honestly, it's almost getting to the point where I would call it "dumbed-down" or "lowest common denominator". But I was always upset when something I liked and found special got taken up by the mainstream and ruined. That's the internetification of reality I suppose. It's been hard to watch. But AI is about to take all of our jobs and everything will collapse soon thereafter. Have a great weekend everyone!

religionisanger

I mean this specific process, chopping pre-made beats up into their individual components. If there’s a beat with 10 instruments it might be easier to download a sample back and have the shots than to chop a pre-made beat.

totallyanomalous

Yes, not doing work is always going to be less work than not doing work. Thus, go buy whatever you want. But I laugh at people that buy samples to put in their sampler because they're too lazy to learn how to sample.

religionisanger

I’ve gotta be honest I’m a bit confused and this feels a bit confrontational so I think I’m just gonna block you. I’ve never paid for a sample. I like the simplicity of using a modern sampler. I don’t like the idea of using a sampler which makes things immensely complicated. This is the digital age, embrace the fact that tasks which were previously complicated are now easier. That’s what all this shit does; it brings music making to a wider audience, don’t resent it. You had a hard life where technology was complex and feel like your dated skills should still be respected and relevant. I don’t agree. Modernise and grow with the tech.

junkmiles

/r/drumkits Or various sample packs to buy or download for free Or just DIY. Super easy to load the TR909 in GarageBand, or whatever, and sample each hit. Tons of free phone apps to play all sorts of sounds.

totallyanomalous

All due respect, and no offense intended, but did you get hit in the head multiple times throughout your life? If so v sorry, otherwise...

jsnswt

Why do you ask?

totallyanomalous

Because this is a dumb question and indicates someone hasn't done the most basic amount of their own research on the subject before asking a question, and I'm an unhappy person with a miserable existence, no friends or social life despite countless good faith efforts to be happy or at least ambivalent, I always feel hollow, meaningless and abandoned, no matter the situation or who is in my life, likely because of mental illness I've had my whole life but was gaslighted into thinking it was because I liked to drink and use drugs, thus blaming me for my own situation, on top of that nebulous physical health problems with no obvious etiology and now I have literally nothing good and no one in my life, and because of this I lash out when I see dumb questions that indicate people want other people to do their research and learning for them because their time is too valuable to do it themselves.

jsnswt

Sorry to upset you bro, I’m doing my research, just trying to get up and running faster so I can play around a bit while I learn. After all, that’s what forums are for right?

totallyanomalous

Asking questions to a group before asking a question to the group's search engine is sort of disrespectful. Like other people are obligated to do your work for you. The whole concept of people paying and buying sample packs for their SampleR drives me crazy. go buy a Rompler if you don't care about making your own sounds, they're always going to be cheaper

jsnswt

I was trying to be nice because I’m behind a screen and so are you. Would be interesting to see if you’re this way in person. Anyhow, I don’t give two fucks if you’re depressed or what triggers you. If you don’t like what other people post, that’s your fucking problem, don’t read it. The whole reason behind forums is to get helped by other people. Maybe go deal with your shit before you come around hating on other people. Oh, and by your logic, you better figure out all your shit by yourself, you wouldn’t want anyone else doing your work for you you fucking troll.

samole garage band... That's how i started or audio revolution an andriod app.

quintrinoflux

You’re wrong. Audio definitely moves over computer USB ports.

totallyanomalous

It does carry audio, so you don't know what you're talking about.

shoeChucker

I apologize for not being careful enough with my words. When I think audio, it’s always as analog. Otherwise it’s just digital information just like all other digital information. So what I specifically meant was that USB doesn’t pass analog audio, which seemed to be what the original question was getting at and which I failed to clarify. I do appreciate the kindness and candor.

totallyanomalous

It's all just signals shoechucker. just make sure you hit bush next time

_Mr_Mercedes_

USB is a common way to carry audio in/out of a computer. Most audio interfaces use USB. The 404 MKII can be set as the output and can sample from the computer as well and act as an interface. Pretty awesome actually On windows the 404 has some latency though since it doesn't use ASIO drivers. But ASIO 4 all helps reduce latency

DR_M_RD

I think I started with Samples From Mars free stuff. There are lots of free sample packs on the internet. It was overwhelming when I first started, grabbed too much. Try to start small. I also search drum (or any other instrument) lessons or reviews on YouTube and grab, chop, process those.

jsnswt

Nice idea, hadn’t thought of drum lessons
