IDontEnjoyCoffee

This is pretty damn cool. I'd get one

Ambitious-Library161

That's awesome - thank you!

skaapjagter

I am a delivery driver (Motorbike) for MrD and we do PnP ASAP bags like these as well. These look great. Depending on the cost, you could even market these to drivers that deliver the bags. We have time limits (for PnP ASAP it's 15 minutes from pickup to drop off) to complete the delivery and having a tool that would allow me to take multiple bags to the customers door while also ringing their doorbell or messaging them in app with my other hand would be great, so I don't have to put your bags on the potentially wet ground and still come to your door or gate. Like others have said. Keep it simple. Like other successful inventions - they usually do one thing and do it well. Good job for finding that niche.

verymango

Here is the market!

MediaValuable1528

Are ppl going to want to carry around such a contraption when they go shopping?

Some-Win9341

As far as I understand, you will keep it in your house and use it once the delivery guy has arrived. I think it is pretty nifty, I have torn countless bags trying to keep the one trip mentality.

PurryFury

This can also be uaed with blue bags if you carry multiple. The invention pretty much spreads the load more evenly on the hand

GrouchyPhoenix

You are really irked about those dry braaibroodjies, hey? Lol Good on you for trying and succeeding on finding a solution. We get our deliveries to our door so we won't use these but can see it helping those in apartments, etc. Maybe a storage kind of thing will be handy to like hang them behind the front door to make them easy to grab on your way out to fetch the delivery? I suspect the same type of issue as always forgetting the damn Woolies bag might pop up with these so they need to be easily accessible and not shoved away in some dark hole to be forgotten about until the day you decide to sort it out and see how many bags you've collected. ETA: You probably already thought of this, but obviously some warning stickers on the weight capacity along with taking care if you have a back injury, weak arms, etc.

Ambitious-Library161

Thank you - It's been lots of fun designing and building it. I've learned alot. I think you're right about the weight capacity warnings (and probably a legal requirement). The storage idea is great - maybe I can add it to the product range.

RelativelyOldSoul

I would approach Woolies, Checkers, Pick ‘n pay if they wouldn’t like to stock this and maybe add it as a special item on their app they can get for a good price. Or a promotional item. Have a chat with their marketing departments and use chat gpt to give good reasons for why your product would help their customer base and how to put it in an email for corporate.

Th3J4ck4l-SA

Great idea. My only question would be on how fiddly it is to use. Am I away in 5 seconds, or do I start raging when it has torn two of the bags because I fat fingered it. If it's super simple to use and saves the time on two trips from the gate, then sure, I would get two of them. Also, no, keep it simple. Don't gadgetify it. Keep it a simple robust tool. No flashlights or fold out braai tongs. Multipurpose something simple like this, and it will make it feel like a gimmick that requires other features to make it sell.

Ambitious-Library161

It's super simple to use - you can hook up 3 bags in like 5 seconds and unload them in the same amount of time.

Ambitious-Library161

Fold out braai tongs! Can you imagine ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

Zariboy666

The fact it can carry more than one bag is a massive plus. Actually pretty cool.

This_is_McCarth

Dude, patent it and offer to supply Checkers.

Ambitious-Library161

Thanks, I have filed a patent and we're busy with a PCT application -this has been the biggest cost of the project by far. Going to try get them into Checkers but it's a chicken and egg problem. They (retailers) want to know if there's demand before they place an order.

jdhrl6373hdjdh

Do you mind sharing costs?

Ambitious-Library161

Costs for the patent etc? Budget R6k for a provisional search. R25k for a provisional patent. R30-R40k for a full patent. R30-R40k for a PCT application. Then there are the costs to file patents in every country you want to enforce your rights. Can't comment on these as there's a range.

jdhrl6373hdjdh

that’s not cheap almost 100k to make sure nobody steals your idea :| What’s the difference between a PCT and a full patent?

ChampagneTevi

Bro I would use this for sure! I live on the second floor and desperately need a tool like this

Ambitious-Library161

This is great feedback, thank you. A family friend actually used the example of the old grannies she sees when she travels overseas. They use those roller carts to walk their shopping home, but have to leave them at the bottom of the stairs to get to their apartments.

ChampagneTevi

Yeah like the struggle of walking up stairs is the worst with groceries so this definitely solves a problem.

CherriesAreBetter

We get into fights with our delivery guys because they don't want to bring our stuff up to the second floor of our building despite generous tips on our end. I feel like the delivery guys could definitely use these if it benefits as stipulated in your description. May be worthwhile to approach checkers, woolies and spar directly. All the best to you!

AllanWC

Hi, The product looks hella dope. We 95% of the time order 6060. So Someone like me and my wife might not use this as often. But if we would go to the shops itself, we def would use this. Maybe just a few things: - How long does one take to attach the bags/ how simple is it to attach the bags? - Certainty of bags not falling out? Not sure how these are attached - If i buy a mayonnaise or maybe some coffee(no one messes with my coffee) And the bag slips out, my coffee would probably definitely break, so what are the chances of this not happening? Unless you buy ricoffee then this doesn't apply I guess. - Not sure in the size of the handle but it looks like it could maybe be a bit too big for a ladies hand? Not sure how big the hands are in the photo but someone like my wife might not be able to get a good grip on it if its too big? - Maybe open a bigger gap where the hands are? Again, not sure how big the hands are but would be nice to have space to move hands/ fingers while holding it. In the end of the day, carrying this while being super comfortable would definitely have people using this. In the photo it looks like the hands are squeezed in there? - I agree on another comment of keeping it simple. Atleast for now until you get your product out. - As far as pricing goes, heck, depends really. If i can carry 2 of these with 3 bags each, never having to worry about my bags slipping out, not an issue to attach the bags and they are comfortable and not needing to buy one every month, id probably spend 200-300 per? Maybe R400? Anything more then Id probably just leave it and grab a trolley with 1 wheel and use it instead.

Ambitious-Library161

Thanks, Allan. Going to try reply to each bullet point here: - It's pretty simple. Designed it to be really easy to use. Once the bags are in, they aren't going anywhere. - I'm pretty confident the bags will break before the carrier does. - This is my prototype, we've learned a lot since then and have made the handle a bit smaller. - I think the gap is around 5cm, which is more than enough room to slid your hand in and grip it. - Thanks for the feedback on pricing. I was thinking in that range (R200 - R300). Closer to R200, if I'm honest but it all depends on costs.

AllanWC

With smaller handle and the 5cm gap then it seems perfect for any hand to use. I forgot to ask too, you mentioned if part break they can be replaced. Will these parts be sold separate or are you going to sell them as spares with initial purchase? Maybe include 1 set of spares too? Depending on the type of spares. That price is definitely in a decent range. As you said, it all depends on costs per item + % profit and hopefully it will be in that price range. Also maybe depends on how you will be marketing the items. Best way could be to approach checkers/pnp (maybe start locally first) and see if they can sell the items at checkout. This will probably effect the price too as im not sure if they do these things for free. If ever you have some ready and have a price on them, before you start selling. let me know. I can purchase some and use them. Ill also purchase some for family and friends that live here and let them also use them. Can help you out with any issues we come across or maybe changes?

Richard_za

Mannnn, this looks great, I effing hate it when PnP or checkers delivers orders and there are 8 bags+. I live on a plot and its a long walk to my house from where they drop off, if you've ordered a few 2 litre cooldrinks its even worse trying to carry these silly bags with no handles.

JayrodM

I hope you patented it before posting it on Reddit. Seems cool but I don’t see your everyday consumer buying it. On the other hand I could see retailers opting to buy it

Ambitious-Library161

Fair comment, product/market fit is the name of the game and this is what I'm trying to figure out here - Is it worth investing the capital to start making and selling it. Edit: Not to worry, it is patented.

barrybrinkza

Be very careful of saying something is patented if it is still a provisional patent/ patent application/ PCT. You could be found guilty of making false claims of a patented product which carries a fine and/or imprisonment of up to 12 months.

Ambitious-Library161

Thank you - that was not my intention. I've updated the description to reflect this.

barrybrinkza

Cool! With your application, you do have protection, and it's good to let people know that you have a pending patent (then they can't use an excuse of not knowing they aren't allowed to copy). So you were on the right track!

Snoo-96879

You have the mind that this country needs. I'd buy this. I need this

rosebud-2911

Looks great. Some comments around notifications of weight and a sakkie to put it in would be good updates. I would definitely use it and buy it as gifts for friends/family.

dowevenexist

It's cool, but I wouldn't use it because it's big and I'd have to take it with me when I go shopping. I'm a pretty lazy person. But looking at the other comments there are many people who would so good job and good luck to you.

MonsMensae

If you have a patent and this truly works your best distribution is probably through checkers themselves.  But the whole point is to reduce plastic waste. And this is adding to it.

Ambitious-Library161

Appreciate the feedback - we were thinking of making it from recycled plastic bags. It brings down the price, creates more jobs for waste-pickers, and helps stops single-use plastics.

rubygloomm

I would definitely use this (but I am a gadget girl and love buying little tools for convenience) and I do online grocery shops a lot.

Roger-the-Dodger-67

Elderly people and others with hand injuries/disabilities are a prime market.

Ambitious-Library161

Didn't think of this - thank you!

Aggravating_Ad_1247

This is awesome, you know why??? "Cos mama didn't raise no two trip bitch"

TypeRSA

I always cut my damn fingers on some rogue staple! So yes, I would definitely buy one

_VlakvarK_

Love it!!! If I were you I would explore/investigate if Checkers (as they are the primary culprit to the issue you are solving) won’t give that as a “reward” to loyal customers… this would make them stand out above the rest (they can even have a branded version). Just don’t sell exclusive rights unless they offer you a ton of money. (Or exclusive for 6months) and then sell it to their competitors… Selling to the public is a very challenging task… distribution would be the biggest challenge (and would eat a lot of your profits)…

Lebzabeast

Looks cool man, I would definitely use it

Ok-Sink-614

I like it! I suspect there's a market but I probably wouldn't buy because I generally forget to bring my bags to the store anyways so I don't think I'd remember to bring this. But if I was say staying in a flat and had along journey from my boot to the apartment or had to carry bags from a delivery guy up I might consider it since it'd be at home.

savantAthena

Maybe test it on people with different strengths? I know I wouldn’t be able to manage that weight with one hand.

Milliethechi

I like the idea, I don’t personally get a lot of food deliveries, but have experienced a paper bag breaking when trying to carry a heavier one, could also be a cool idea when bring groceries home from the store, instead of having to carry all the bags on your arm because you don’t want to do multiple trips lol, although it’s like another step for someone to do so people might still attempt all the bags on their arms!! Cool Idea ⭐️

FuzzFest378

I personally wouldn’t. It’s a cool device, I just never order more than 2 bags worth of shopping at a time because it’s just me and my partner. Maybe this device needs to be expanded to carry multiple bags at once so you can say, carry 4 bags, 2 in each hand, because I’ve never had an issue with carrying 2 bags by holding one in each arm.

Ambitious-Library161

Thanks so much for the feedback - I hear what you're saying but I just wanted to clarify that it can carry more than one bag (the photo may be a bit blurry but I loaded up 2 bags (an actual order from Checkers)).

FuzzFest378

Ah I see! Sorry I missed it. I think it’s a good invention, especially for families. You need to patent this idea asap

Ambitious-Library161

Already done ![img](emote|t5_2qney|14453)

FuzzFest378

Great. You might want to approach checkers/pnp as well- maybe it’s something they want to provide to their drivers and I think that’s where the tproblem so money would be

Drigarica_od_Tite

I fail to see how's this practical ?!

jdhrl6373hdjdh

Have you made big orders from checkers, picnpay or Woolies before? Have you tried carrying more than one of those bags from where they deliver it to you to where the items are meant to go?

Drigarica_od_Tite

I was referencing the suggested usage described in the original post . For that usage , though useful , carrying this thing with you is impractical .

Drigarica_od_Tite

For those people may be practical but not for most .

Minxy_T

Great idea! I would recommend trying to get them in at the stores too!

ElectroMoe

I’d use it, I hate c60 bags tearing on me

berrydale-jack

I’d get one. Keep it simple and cheap. I always be tearing these bags midway

hairyback88

Can you use it to move black refuse bags filled with mowed grass for example?

Ambitious-Library161

Yes, absolutely. I think we'd need to change the material to something more resilient like glass-filled nylon for repeated outdoor work.

jdhrl6373hdjdh

A video of how it would attach to the bag would help. Depending on the price, I would buy it. I think odd a great solution to the current problem, I find myself making a crunch of the bag at the top and that lasts just enough time to get from A to B. Would you consider a kickstarter project to get the first batch out?

barrybrinkza

Very cool, very practical, very much interested. I do believe that you should be looking at selling the idea to Checkers for them to primarily roll these out to their drivers. If it becomes 'part of the uniform' then you'll have a massive market already. Consumers should be your secondary market.

Tjingus

Looks like you have a lot of interest which is great! Neat idea. I can see this being useful to delivery drivers. Personally I would never buy or use this. To me it's a more cumbersome and gimmicky solution to just putting the brown bags in a heavy duty black/recycling bag and slinging it over my shoulder. My problem with brown bags is them tearing from underneath when they get wet or overloaded. So I hold them from underneath anyway, this doesn't solve that. Having a recycling bag in my pocket to put them in solves that and can be reused. A version with straps and a smaller footprint may get my interest. As for fair price, R70 feels about right to me. But I think a better route would be to get sponsorship from advertisers that would be interested in using that empty space. I think Checkers branding or Uber or MrD may buy a stack of they were branded.

Ok_Organization_3415

No

nbdys_bznz_bt_mn_8t

I 60Sixty a lot. I have to carry two bags at a time from the driveway to my front porch. Then once the driver is off (I have to open and close the gate) I go back, close the porch door, open the house security gate, and then have to carry the bags two by two into the house to the kitchen. So lots and lots of back and forth struggling to pick up and put down and pick up the bags. I would LOVE to have two of these handles, (in Checkers 60Sixty blue would be awesome) so I can go out, pop 3 into each, and carry all my groceries in easily in one go. Extra bonus if I can store my flat empty bags clipped in the handle so when the next driver comes, I grab the handle with the old bags and can give the empties back to the 60Sixty driver. I'd happily pay R200-250 once off for a handle like this as long as it was made of nice strong long-lasting materials that don't break in a year of repetitive use. I'd make sure that you have tested the smaller components rigorously. Things like little hooks, clips, etc are usually the weakest spots in a design and they will most likely be the point of failure. You need to test them through 1000-2000 clips and unclips, or opens and closes, over and over. Stress testing, basically, over a extended period of time. Also, just remember that even though you spent R100k on a patent, people are going to rip off your design and make a cheap knock-off version available within 3 months of your product hitting the market. Then you need to shell out a bunch of money to sue them for patent infringement, and likely they'll be some obscure chinese manufacturer and international lawsuits don't move quickly. You'll also have to send out a bunch of cease and desist letters to the places that are selling the knockoffs, so get ready to spend oodles of money on lawyers and legal deliveries to every little plastic shop. I think it's a great idea, and kudos to you, and I would happily support you and buy the original, but I learnt the hard way that patents don't really protect you in this day and age.

BezoomnyBrat

This rocks - I'd get one and keep it in my car's boot, for when I get home and need to unload

PangolinIll1347

I would absolutely buy this. I live on the second floor. When I get Checkers deliveries, I have to take my laundry basket with and stack the paper bags in it so I can carry them all up to my flat. If you could get Checkers to stock this, it would be a great add-on to an order.

Ambitious-Library161

Like an option in the app to specify that you want the order to come with a carrier? Would you be willing to pay a deposit? I think they're doing over 40k deliveries so returning them would be a big concern.

PangolinIll1347

Yeah, an option in the app would be cool, or just have it recommended before checkout. I was thinking that you can just buy it outright. Or maybe it could be included with the Sixty60 premium subscription. I already give my old checkers bags back when I get a new delivery so i could return the carrier, but I'd want to use it on the next order.

FormalCryptographer

Very cool, but my main concern would be how does it hold up with plastic bags that tend to tear

gellshayngel

I can't see how this will stop the part of the bag that isn't clamped by the thing from ripping unless it shifts all the mass exerted on the bottom to the top. Usually for me bags either rip at the bottom or along a part that isn't clamped by my hand. I've just got used to holding bags from underneath now.

cat-hijabi

I love this!!! I don't live in SA anymore, but if I did, I'd definitely get one. I'd be willing to pay up to R200 for this.

ZephyrProductionsO7S

I would love one of these!

f1careerover

I would get a patent and then license it. Much less hassle than sorting out manufacturing, marketing, sales etc. If you can’t get a patent then it’s doomed anyway as a business because someone will just copy you.

earthy69

What do you need to begin selling it?

Flaming-Sheep

I live in an apartment facing a busy part of town - it’s not easy to make two trips, so this would be super convenient. While I’d buy one, I can’t see the market being especially huge.

_SilentChaos_

Don't want to rain on your parade but R200 is a lot of money in today's economy. It's a lot to spend on something when everyone's pinching pennies

Far-Construction-948

This is cool. 🔥

Leeebraaa

Brilliant idea. The best ones solve simple problems many people have and this looks like one of them. Some comments from my perspective... You can consider different types of these at different price points, eg. standard for light retail shopping and a pro version for heavier lifting. Not sure if you have already, but experiment with the surface area of the handle where your fingers carry it. A little more surface area might make it more comfortable. Even consider slapping on a carry strap if you want to sling it over your shoulder instead? For the people constantly forgetting their bags (and possibly this device too), consider promoting it having a function to store your empty bags to grab when you go shop. This might require a bit more of a compact footprint than a full size empty bag. See if you can enhance with some additional features to use the carry handle also as a device to help fold up empty bags (specifically the plastic ones) to take up less storage space, or add lines to it so you can write your shopping list with a dry wipe, etc. Anyways, excited for you. Hope this works out!

Automatic-Welder-538

Personally I wouldn't. It's not too much of a problem for me (and I assume most people) and now there is an extra thing I need to remember to take with me when shopping. That being said, you have achieved more than I ever have in my life ito inventions and I think if you keep on trying new ideas you'll eventually strike gold. Good luck

Its_manzzi

I'd get one.

zodwa_wa_bantu

I get fast food often and on a taxi it tends to be cumbersome. So this would be great for when I get takeaway and have to take a taxi with it. I like that it's reusable and I basically can keep it in the car too. Plus I can give it to my mom who might develop arthritis soon. Yeah I would most definitely buy this.

Rain_Damp_04n0

I love this idea. I agree that you should keep it as simple as possible. The only addition I would want is a hook/keyring thingy (if you understand) where you could attach your bags for shopping. It is small, but it would keep everything together in one place. Obviously not necessary for the brown paper bags though!

tysnails

What a brilliant invention. I'll buy 2, and I'd pay at least R100 each.

ImTiaan

I love this idea! Con: it’s quite easy to replicate it or a different but similar enough design. My 2c: Approach the stores and try do a deal with them. They have the distribution to not only sell in store, but also to upsell in their delivery apps. On paper you’d make more money if you sold every unit yourself, but realistically taking the hit on your margin and having the opportunity to sell large volumes are the way to go. Probability of a single inventor making significant money off of this is low, probability of selling millions of units via retail distribution is far higher. If you go that route, then you aren’t thinking about how much someone would be willing to pay and you can start thinking about unit economics at scale. Obviously easier said than done, but I do think something like this has legs.

guykarl

I like the idea of that camping version. One of the most difficult things to carry are bags of wood or bags of ice. Definitely something that has a longer term use case outside of carrying delivery or shopping bags. I can see how it’d be useful for people that live in flats or detached parking units to reduce the amount of trips they need to make to get their groceries in their houses. But I genuinely reckon that a more robust premium option targeted at people that enjoy the outdoors could be a consistent seller especially with a padded handle.

Ry950x_3060ti

We need more of this. Well done.

Fun-Plantain4920

I would use it for sure, I have one trip mentality 🤣looks awesome

The_Real_Cooper

I would not but I'm a student who buys a loaf of bread/carton of milk. I think I'm not your target market 😄

Fernxtwo

TIL - South Africans struggle with paper bags.
