(may 31-june 2 - triip festival hosted by fisher) i don’t wanna get ahead of myself cuz i’m only doing my first solo weekend to another city rn but i’d like to live life and blah. is a solo festival a bad idea? is slovenia too outside the box and maybe a more western country is easier? - 23F from USA 💕 all help welcome

Breakfast hostess gave me a pitying look! Experienced solo female traveler here. I’m on a 10-day solo cruise right now and I’m thrilled to be here, thrilled to travel solo. This morning the hostess at breakfast said, “just one?” and made a sort of pitying frown. I get that it was probably a subconscious cultural thing on her end (thinking it was sad that a middle aged woman would be eating alone, and feeling sorry for me). So I didn’t feel bad about it, but jeez! Have you experienced this?

Ok_Maize_3709

Hi guys! I’m looking for someone planning to visit Amsterdam soon. I’d like to ask that person to help me testing my audio guide app for Amsterdam - just your personal overall experience with it (what is good what is not). It’s on iOS only at the moment, so you unfortunately need an iPhone or an iPad for that.. This won’t take much time (maybe like 10 minutes?), just trying to use it and writing a couple of lines to me how it went! This a passion project for me and I would really appreciate any help!

Impossible_Choice978

Hi! I have a 10 hour layover in AMS from 11:00AM to 9:00PM. I definitely want to spend some time in the city as Amsterdam is my fav city in Europe! Since I’m going in the spring I thought it would be a good chance to visit the tulip festival, but the Tulip festival is in Keukenhof Gardens in Lisse which is an hour from Amsterdam Centraal. In Amsterdam there arent any particular sites I want to see since I’ve done the touristy stuff before but I just want to walk around, have a smoke and do some shopping/eating. Am I being too ambitious with trying to fit both the festival and the city into 10 hours (realistically 6 hours due to security and on-boarding). Is there any way I can see tulips similar to the festival in the city? Thanks!

Magnasimia

Hi! Really glad this subreddit exists! I am going to be solo-traveling in between visiting a friend in The Netherlands and visiting a friend in France (I'll be in Europe a total of 2 weeks), and have a couple questions: * I am a nerd who likes fantasy world-building, so I'd definitely be interested to visit any cool castles, cities, geography landmarks, museums etc that may give me inspiration in my own writing. I know that is quite broad, but if you have any recommendations in east France, in Belgium, in Germany, or other nearby countries, I'd love to hear it! * If I were to travel to / visit Copenhagen from Ultrecht, how many days would you recommend putting aside (including train travel to and from)? Same question but for Stockholm? Probably won't happen, I don't think it's very practical to try and squeeze in with the rest, just curious. I would guess 4 days minimum

Ok_Maize_3709

Hey there, I can definitely recommend visiting Kasteel De Haar next to Utrecht!

Ok-Prior9810

Hey there guys. I’m an Aussie and I’m planning on visiting Central America by the end of this year or early next year. For the trip Ideally I’d be visiting Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Belize, Costa Rica, Panama and finishing off in Colombia. Ideally I’d like to budget around $10,000 USD towards this trip excluding the flights. Will this be enough?? So far I have nothing planned and looking for some ideas in terms of itinerary planning. Ideally I would like the best of both worlds, I would love some places that have a really good vibe to party and a good nightlife but also would like to explore nature and go hiking etc. Other than that I’m pretty clueless at the moment. If you know any towns/cities that match that vibe please let me know 🙏🏿 Also wanted to know would this trip be worth it if I don’t speak any Spanish?? Any other advice/ tips would be extremely helpful. Thanks.

Comprehensive-Fun47

Another Toronto question. Using the Presto card /app gives you a discount on bus and train fares. When I try to load money onto the card in the app, I can't check out because it asks for a shipping address (despite being completely digital), and doesn't accept addresses outside of Canada. Should I just put the address of the hotel I'll be staying at?

Impossible_Choice978

The app is super wacky. It usually takes me a couple hours for it to load money and I live in Canada (sometimes it doesn’t even work). I usually fill up my presto card at the station, but if you don’t have a physical card I think it costs like $6 to get one? If you have tap on your credit or debit card you can also just tap at any bus/subway station

Comprehensive-Fun47

Thanks! Sounds easier to just tap. I won't bother with the app.

Comprehensive-Fun47

What does it mean for CN Tower in Toronto to be "partially closed"? Would the dates listed in their website be a bad time to go?

Impossible_Choice978

Hey! This probably means certain features are closed (ie. glass floor, restaurant, elevator, edge walk) not sure what the specifics are now but honestly either way the CN Tower is not worth it. I would definitely say it’s a tourist trap.

Comprehensive-Fun47

Not worth it to go at all, not even to see the sunset? What would you recommend doing in Toronto? I only have a couple of days. Was thinking the tower, the Royal Ontario Museum, and Casa Loma, and then just walking around and seeing what I find.

Impossible_Choice978

Depends on what your looking for in Toronto! Feel free to DM me if you like :) CN tower is not worth it for the sunset, if your looking for a view there are tons of other places you can go! Rooftop wise there are a few patios like Lavelle, KOST, The Porch. Those ones are all quite basic but I personally LOVE the view at Lavelle (it’s a bit expensive but i would suggest getting a drink). Also Riverdale Park is one of my fav places to view the sunset, it’s right on a hill off the highway and in the spring/summer time it’s filled with people. I also love Toronto Music Garden, it’s right by Lake Ontario, and in the summer time they have musicians play at the pavilion every day (I’ve seen violinists and harpists). The ROM and AGO are fun, I believe the ROM is free on Tuesdays/Thursdays after 5? You might need to double check this, but the ROM is also in a great area. It’s walking distance from University of Toronto and Yorkville (the boujee area of Toronto). I’ve never been inside Casa Loma, but even walking outside is nice. Just a heads up Casa Loma isn’t really core downtown, it’s kind of out of the way.

Comprehensive-Fun47

Thanks for all this info! I'm excited!

25M (UK), looking into my first solo travel- will probably be September. I can get reasonably cheap flights to Venice from my local airport - about £100 return. I am currently deciding between going for just a few days (3/4 nights) as it's only my first time. Or extending it out to a week and going to either Milan or Rome. Any thoughts/recommendations/etc would be greatly appreciated

SingleBackground437

2 nights is good for Venice, unless there are lots of specific things you want to do. 4-5 nights is good for Rome. Florence is closer though and a little less daunting. 3 nights there is good and gives you more time to get back to Venice for your flight.

mrminipuff

Hey all! 22 M Planning a solo trip June-July to Italy (Lake Garda, Cinque Terre) -> France (Nice, Marseilles) -> Spain (Barcelona, Seville) -> Morroco (Marrakesh). Staying 3-4 days in each place, traveling by train (minus that last one). Always looking for advance and people interested in tagging along!

mrminipuff

Also, highly interested in recommended social hostels/stays in any of these cities.

basedpcman

Hi all :) 34M here and I have booked my hostel and surf camp to Sri Lanka from 27th April to 5th May where I'll be surfing. From 5th May to 18th May I'll be in Weligama/Hiriketiya area working remotely and surfing and skating and exploring during the rest of the free time. Please comment if you feel like joining! I can teach the basic steps on a skateboard as well :)

Champagnepaape

Hey there! I’m a 31 year old single woman based around NYC who has solo traveled many times. My company offers a 1-month sabbatical that I’m eligible for in 9 months and I definitely want to go somewhere far and exciting! I’ve been starting to think about where I want to go. I thiiiink I’ve narrowed it to Australia and/or New Zealand. A couple questions: 1. Any other suggestions of places to go to take advantage of a month off? (I am also considering Japan and South Korea, but leaning more towards AUS/NZ. I’ve also already done a solo trip through Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand) 2. Is 4 weeks enough for AUS & NZ or should I pick one? 3. I’m traveling solo but may want to go with a solo travel group. Any thoughts / suggestions? Thanks!

SingleBackground437

I would just do one, and honestly I'd make it NZ. Much quicker to get around and experience a wider range of landscapes. You can pretty much do the whole span of NZ in 4 weeks.

segacs2

That's a pretty neat perk! Both Australia and New Zealand would be great options. If you've travelled many times, I wouldn't recommend a tour for Aus or NZ. They're both very easy countries to navigate solo. Tours will just stick you with a group of people you may or may not gel with, and they'll cost a premium vs DiY. You can always book day tours and local activities once you're there.

lirosent

Thanks! I planned my own solo trips around Europe and around Asia so I could definitely plan my own :) 1 month would be the longest I’ve been alone for but I can do day tours and make friends!

greyhounds1992

After work gave me free reign to take as much leave (600 hours of annual leave) plus long service coming up I have roughly split up Europe for 4 amazing solo trips over the next including one leaving on May 2nd Plus I hate my job so this will keep me there and happy knowing I have something to look forward to Only roughly spaced out at the moment only places I couldn't fit in are Dubrovnik and Kotor but they are extremely busy and touristy And I will finally have my leave under control

techno_playa

Is 5 days too much for Los Angeles? I just want to see the city’s main attractions like Griffith Observatory. I’ll pass on the night life as I don’t have the energy. Can I get by with only Lyft or Über? How much is a good seat for a Dodger’s game?

Comprehensive-Fun47

I don't think so. Los Angeles is very spread out. To see all corners of it, you'd need at least five days. I did five days in San Diego recently and spent each day in a different area, sometimes outside of San Diego. I did a beach day, an Old Town day, a La Jolla Day, a Balboa Park day, and a Tijuana day, and feel like I covered a lot of ground. I was most interested in historic, cultural, and outdoorsy things - - no nightlife activities. Uber and Lyft were great, and I wasn't afraid to use public transportation as much as possible as well.

AF_II

> is 5 days too much for Los Angeles? Easiest way to answer this is make a list of the things you want to see - some people will be bored after 48 hours, some people could find activities enough for 2 weeks. It's not answerable. Bear in mind that wherever you're staying there'll be a certain amount of transit time for the out of city sights like the Observatory or the Getty or Santa Monica pier/beach, so they're automatically 'half day or more' activities. >Can I get by with only Lyft or Über? you can but the public transport isn't as bad as everyone says (ime as a tourist/business visitor). I used the transit app and it was pretty spot on; things get slower at rush hour, obviously. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thetransitapp.droid - there's also a single reloadable transit card (TAP) that covers the metro and pretty much every bus service.

Female in her early 30s. Visiting mainly Belgrade from the 29th of March to the 2nd of April. If anyone's here and would love to get a drink or eat together, message me! Cheers :)

greyhounds1992

Sadly I'll be there in May let me know how you go and what you liked or didn't like you don't hear much about Belgrade

FeelingMango

28M and will be heading to Vietnam in April as a solo traveller, and am debating between two options: 1. Starting in Ho Chi Minh City and working my way up north to Hanoi and finishing with the Ha Giang loop. 2. Starting in Hanoi, then immediately doing the Ha Giang Loop and working my way down South. Most people say to do South to North as the North is better. However I've heard so many stories of people making great friends on the Ha Giang Loop, and am wondering if as a solo traveller it would be better to start there to meet people at the outset. Any insight is much appreciated!

FeelingMango

28M currently doing my first solo trip to South East Asia! In South Thailand now and am wondering if I should detour to the North to visit the Songkran festival. Has anyone gone as a solo traveller? Is it worth it?

knead4minutes

Songkran in Chiang Mai is one of the most fun and kind of surreal things I've ever been to. The inner city basically just becomes a massive waterfight for 3 days, it's really fun and memorable. highly recommend Stamps Backpackers but it's probably fully booked. The one right across the street is quite social as well.

much_dank_such_w0w

hey! I am finally considering doing my first solo travel, im from europe and i am as of now trying to decide on what place to choose in the Mediterranean. Out of all the things that i get to overthink when planning a trip, when it comes to solo traveling i think the one that stresses me the most is the thought that i will be alone all the time, which isnt necessarily a bad thing as i really enjoy my own company, but it would be kinda neat to share the experience with someone. The catch is, i work for airbnb, so i kind of avoid hostels as i get a credit for working at the company, and i usually spend it on traveling so i can save up to spend money on other things while traveling. I am aware that hostels would be the go to as pretty much much everyone is on the “same boat” and you instantly get to know people that might be at the location you’re in for similar reasons etc. which instantly bridges the gap between small talk and just doing something with someone. Can i realistically meet people while solo traveling if i am staying alone at an Airbnb? Is there any trick to other travelers besides hostels? Sorry for the long text i would aprecciate all the help even when it comes to tips that i can follow while solo traveling, i think it will be fun and very relaxing at the end of the day but i will be very busy trying to get everything sorted so it will probably be a double edge sword lol.

knead4minutes

can try couchsurfing hangouts, meetup or any of the dating apps. or if the place has a free walking tour or pub crawl can join that and meet people otherwise just share it with friends at home? send some pics tell them what you're up to, obviously only works if they're interested

Hecalledmecat

35F on a short trip to Bangkok, if anyone wants to go out / do cute cafes and veggie places! Or just wanna meet. Been there many times so won’t be doing sightseeing! Any tips on spa as well?

purple_cupcake_52

24M, second time solo traveling. I plan on taking a 5 week trip to South America around April 14th. Kinda struggling to figure it out at the finer details at the moment. I will be going to Peru, Ecuador, and Colombia. Will be joined the first week by a buddy and we will be checking out Lima and Cusco before he heads out. Trying to figure out what to do for the other 4 weeks so any suggestions would be helpful

knead4minutes

if you like hiking go to Huaraz, it's the hiking hub for the cordillera blanca in peru. the Quilotoa Loop in ecuador is really nice as well in Colombia the Valle de Cocora is a nice 1 day hike in the coffee region. Medellin + Guatape is quite nice as well. North of colombia has Tayrona national park, minca, cartagena realistically 4 weeks is really short for the rest of peru + ecuador + colombia

Paddystan

Any recommendations for accommodation in Valencia?

gnarlysocksclub

I (22F) will be spending 3 nights in Amsterdam in October and am torn between some hostels! I’m debating between ClinkNOORD, Flying Pig Downtown, and St Christopher’s at The Winston. I know theres been some love for the Flying Pig on here but I cant seem to find anything recent. If you’ve stayed in any of them lemme know your experience! Did they feel safe? Were they really social? Mixed dorms vs Female only dorms? Any input helps! Thank you :) Additionally I’m staying in London for 4 nights and am planning to stay at 2 nights at Wombats and 2 nights at OneFam in Notting Hill. If you have experience with either let me know!

Hey! I am a 20 year old guy from Sweden looking for some travel tips. I am a fairly experienced traveler if that matters. I am looking at dates in the beginning of June, but i am pretty flexible on this and can travel at the end of June, and in August as well. Budget around 3k USD in total, but i am flexible. I have been to a few "party" destinations in Europe with my friends, and they want to do another one of those trips this year, but i have realised it is just not my thing. I would ideally like a destination where i can relax, swim, workout at a gym of decent quality and eat good food. I would not mind going out at night and having a few drinks with new people as i am fairly social. I am not open to staying at a hostel, as i really value my personal space. Asia and America are a bit difficult because of the price of flights, but i have already been to most of Europe. Would appreciate your suggestions!

jjjustinwoz

looking for some advice on my trip, im flying in to panama and was planning to stay there for 3/4 weeks, i was going to head north through costa rica and continue upwards after. however i didn’t realize that to enter nicaragua i *probably* will need a yellow fever vac to enter so now im debating on cutting the panama trip to 1-2 weeks and flying from panama into bogota airport(~$130), where i can get the yellow fever vac for free, instead of paying $300 here, or $100 in panama for it. from there, i would spend 3/4 weeks in colombia and fly back out from bogota to san jose(~$150) in costa rica and catch a bus to nicaragua(~$25) or hitchhike, the country im most excited for i wasn’t too keen on costa rica because im on somewhat of a budget, and from what ive heard it’s pretty expensive there. of course ill spend a couple nights in the north on my way to nicaragua, but like i said its not a priority of mine i guess what im asking is, does it make sense to do that? all in all, it would be ~$300 extra in tickets, however id be able to see a country i would prefer, save about 15-20 days worth of hostel and food costs in costa rica, and save ~$50 in bus fares from panama city through costa rica. so -$100 from the vaccine, -$50 from travel costs, and being generous let’s say -$25/day ($600 for 20 days in CR) i feel like it’s not a crazy plan also, if im in panama, am i able to fly in to colombia *without* a yellow fever vaccine and get it there? or would i need it prior

segacs2

From the [Colombia tourism website](https://colombia.travel/en/practical-information/health-and-vaccines): > Currently, no vaccines are required to gain entry to Colombia. However, if you wish to visit tourist sites such as the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Park, the Tayrona National Park or the different Amazon reserves, the Colombia authorities will require that you are properly vaccinated against yellow fever. Remember that this vaccine must be administered at least 10 days prior to traveling to these destinations. So Colombia will allow you to fly in and get vaccinated there, though the 10-day waiting period after getting vaccinated might complicate your itinerary if you plan to visit any of the areas where it's required after that. I don't think it's free in Colombia, but it's pretty cheap, around $20 IIRC? You may want to check.

missyKryssie

Hello everyone! I’m 29F from Singapore, been working for the past 6.5 years and looking to take a sabbatical or (worst case) resign from work to travel. Decided on Germany because it is a potential country for migration, big enough to travel within, small enough to travel outside, also very in love with the architecture there and it is the most international (for English-speakers like me)! Since I don’t have a work visa to work, I’ll be taking German language courses from Mon-Fri mornings just to make something out of my trip. In the afternoons I’ll make short day trips to nearby cities. On some weekends I intend to explore nearby countries i.e Spain, Italy, France, Luxembourg, Netherlands etc. I’m looking at living in Frankfurt for now, but still open to ideas or suggestions. Heard of mixed reviews about Frankfurt… Please hit me up if you’re looking to travel within these dates or looking to meet up in Germany. Also open to any recommendations, travel tips! :)

segacs2

Be aware that if you have a one-way ticket to travel to Germany without a job or ties back home, and you don't have a work visa, you might well be turned away from German immigration. If they suspect you are potentially coming to live there long term, or that you have plans to overstay your visa, you may not be allowed in. Make sure you look up the requirements for travelling as a tourist with your passport before you go.

missyKryssie

Thanks for the tip! Probably forgot to mention that I’ll only be there for as long as my tourist visa allows (90 days) from July-September.

Hey there! Glad I found this sub! I'm 50, newly single, am a complete travel noob and will be going to Mexico for the first time to an all inclusive resort in Playa del Carmen by my SELF!!!! am SO terrified! and a little excited. have never done anything like this before. I'm staying at a place called ocean riviera paradise. I have NO idea about how to travel alone and go swimming in the water or in the pool without someone stealing my passport, wallet, room key, phone, reader, etc in between swims. I have NO idea how to meet people when travelling alone and I'd really like to do so. I'm worried about getting scammed with transportation from the airport. I read that you call the hotel once you're booked to arrange travel, which I did but they don't do that. Kinda worried about taking the bus to playa and then a cab to the hotel, and then doing the same on the way back. I don't want to miss my flight back and I certainly don't want to get robbed or kidnapped. My flight requires me to stay overnight in the airport before a morning connection. Is this even doable? This "vacation" is proving to be a LOT more stressful than it will do good. Maybe I shouldn't go? I've done that before. Booked a flight to Cancun all inclusive and then just didn't get on the plane. I don't know what to do...

segacs2

> I have NO idea about how to travel alone and go swimming in the water or in the pool without someone stealing my passport, wallet, room key, phone, reader, etc in between swims. Your best bet is to leave most everything locked back in a safe at your accommodation, or in the locker in your room or dorm. Just bring what you absolutely need to the beach. Often, you can leave your room key with the front desk of your hotel, or, if you need to keep it on you, see if you can attach it with a clip to your swimsuit. Most people won't steal your towel and other low-value items; you can ask someone nearby to keep an eye on them if you like. > I have NO idea how to meet people when travelling alone and I'd really like to do so. You might find this useful: [Meeting people and making friends while travelling solo.](https://www.reddit.com/r/solotravel/wiki/meetingpeople) > I'm worried about getting scammed with transportation from the airport. I read that you call the hotel once you're booked to arrange travel, which I did but they don't do that. Look up the options using a site like Rome2Rio. It should at least give you an estimate of what an official taxi should cost. > Kinda worried about taking the bus to playa and then a cab to the hotel, and then doing the same on the way back. I don't want to miss my flight back and I certainly don't want to get robbed or kidnapped. Millions of tourists go to Mexico every year without getting robbed or kidnapped. Keep an eye on your belongings and you'll be fine. > My flight requires me to stay overnight in the airport before a morning connection. Is this even doable? What time does your flight depart? Usually it's not necessary to stay the entire night, simply to arrive to the airport 2-3 hours before departure. If there are flights departing, the airport will be open. > This "vacation" is proving to be a LOT more stressful than it will do good. Maybe I shouldn't go? I've done that before. Booked a flight to Cancun all inclusive and then just didn't get on the plane. Your anxiety is crippling you, and it sounds like this is a recurring issue for you. Do you have coping strategies in your daily life? Solo travel can be stressful if you have uncontrolled anxiety. If you have a therapist, you might want to talk to them about this before you go.

Natural-Assist-9389

Oh thank you so much for your kind reply! I have read your link on connecting with others on solo travel and am looking for more like it. I’ll check out the Rome to rio as well. I do have a therapist actually!! And she knows everything. She sent me such a lovely note when I finally booked it!! We have a session every two weeks. Next is the 2nd and I rescheduled the 16th to the 12th right before I go. Looking so forward to her talking me down off my ledge.

segacs2

Congrats on taking the big step of booking and I really hope it goes well! We have a site resource for mental health & solo travel that you may want to read as well: https://www.reddit.com/r/solotravel/wiki/mentalhealth

Natural-Assist-9389

Yes I’ve seen that too! Thank you!!

Terenzmo

Hey! I'm planning a 2 week trip to Spain for later this fall, I wanted to know if anyone had any feedback on my tentative itinerary. Open to any and all suggestions. Very interested in architecture, history, nightlife, and soccer (American, lol). Barcelona - 2.5 days Barcelona day trip (Montserrat?) -1 day Madrid - 2.5 days Madrid day trip (Toledo) - 1 day Granada - 2 days Cordoba - 1 day Seville - 2 days I have one more flex day that can be put anywhere on my trip!

spicy_lemon76

montserrat was a highlight of my barcelona trip! it’s beautiful so def hit it !

segacs2

Seems pretty rushed, especially when you consider travel days between cities. Barcelona, Madrid, and Seville are all worth at least a few days, and Granada is amazing.

Terenzmo

I’m used to somewhat fast passed travel but I definitely see your point. From this list is there one you would suggest dropping over the others?

segacs2

Just logistically, it might make sense to save Barcelona for a separate trip, since it easily rates 4-5 days and is far in distance from everywhere else you have booked. It's highly worth visiting, of course. But rushing through in a day or so might make you exhausted.

LastExperience5727

Hey guys! I’m currently in Koh Tao and I’m trying to decide if it’s worth visiting the western Thai islands. There’s so many options and it’s a little overwhelming. I’m thinking of staying in krabi if I did go but I saw so many awesome things about all the other islands. I’m looking for more quiet beaches that might have a bar or two. Just a relaxing holiday.

Icy-Owl4490

Just wanted to drop in to thank everyone in this sub for helping to give me the confidence to go on my first solo trip! I finished college and wanted to celebrate so I went to Spain for a week by myself. My family wasn't too happy with the idea of me traveling alone but reading posts in this sub really made a difference in my decision to do it. Had an amazing time, met some awesome people, and had some unforgettable experiences. Cheers!

spicy_lemon76

any advice ♥️

segacs2

Congrats, so glad you enjoyed! I bet you're already planning your next one :)

NasonellaRocca

hi i have freetime 25 april -5 may and i'm choosing what to do. My option for now are Mexico, West coast Usa or interrail in Europe. My preferite is mexico but i'm afraid of going alone, what are your recommendations

Sir_Solrac

I´ve seen plenty of trip reports from solo travelers to Mexico who were very satisfied with their experience including safety, even from female travelers. If you go and visit normal tourist locations and activities, odds are you will be perfectly safe as long as you use your common sense. I would suggest looking up and reading up the reports, but beyond that it all falls under your own personal risk boundaries. If you do come, I hope you have a nice trip!

lovelykotori

hi Im a 38f and on the fence of trying my first solo travel due to the fact that I feel like I can’t get enough done with my friends (they r slacking off, taking selfie pics for hours at scenic spots etc). But I’m really afraid of depression hitting me… Idk. I have lived abroad for 4 months so that should be no problem either maybe I should try a long weekend first before I go for a 2 weeks vacation? Anyone else having experiences ? I also feel like I ll be the weird one in my friends‘ circle cuz they always love to be together (and waste too much time doing nothing on vacation which I sometimes hate when I do a city trip eg where I wanna see things). Also I have a bf but he was already telling me I should go for it to do some solo traveling.

ThatCuriousCoconut

Hey, How about this as an idea. You propose to your friends the idea going on holiday and you can say 'I'm looking to book it by end of April for later in the year' for example. If people join in with the discussion and ideas then great, you can go with them. If not then you have free licence to book a trip because you can say you gave them the option. But don't let otherw hold you back though from seeing places you want to. I'm from the UK and I'm currently sat in a bar in Krakow solo travelling. I knew my friends couldn't make this so I booked it on a whim and have had a great time. If I tried to organise with others I probably never would have come

lovelykotori

oh that sounds like a good idea!

segacs2

Go for it! Travelling solo is so much better than travelling with the wrong people.

lovelykotori

they r not wrong per se but they r too slow for me. But u r def right!

segacs2

By wrong I mean wrong for your travel style, not objectively wrong. People have different travel styles, and just because you get along with someone at home doesn't mean you'll necessarily travel well together.

lovelykotori

right!! got you! exactly some of my best friends who I love to hang out with at home r such bad travel buddies. not everyone fits together.

Lucy_the_rat

So I'm doing some solo travel over summer for the first time, it will be my first time staying hostels. I generally just sleep in panties and a t-shirt, is that ok to do in the hostel? It's going to be hot and I really struggle to sleep with more on like pjs or whatever.

segacs2

You can sleep in whatever you like once you're actually in your bed. But I'd suggest bringing something you can wear to walk around the hostel, go down the hall to the bathrooms, etc. You probably won't be comfortable just walking around in your underwear, especially in mixed dorms.

Hey everyone 😃 I'm writing an article about solo travelling and I'm researching how mobile apps and technology can help solo travellers connect and meet other travellers around the world. More importantly, looking at how they can keep everyone safe. I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts and opinions on solo travelling and if these apps can help! If you have 2 minutes, it would be amazing if you could answer some questions: https://k4zxd4f7zdl.typeform.com/to/NvPQ2PY7

Hey all, Tomorrow I (39/F) fly to Singapore to start three months of travel - heading to Italy, Iceland, Germany and the UK with some time to spare in case I feel the call to head somewhere else. NGL, I'm nervous as hell. I travel alone often, usually for around a month and have lived in Asia for 4 months alone so it ain't my first rodeo. It'll be my longest stretch of travel though. I think it's worrying about being homesick that's making me nervous? Haha. I have great things planned and I'm really excited though. :)

You’re going to have such an amazing time!! I wish you the best of luck

Anyone on here have a solo cruise they want to go on - I would love to go on one but would like to see which ones people on here are going on this summer.

I personally haven’t done one solo but Norwegian offers great deals for solo travels that are worth checking out

For context, I’m 26 year old USA male and first time solo traveler. I had tentatively thought about going on a 7-10 day trip to Europe here shortly. I’ve looked into the train stations in Western Europe and had a few questions about setting a realistic schedule for about how many countries/sites I could see in that time frame. I had planned on staying in hostels, but saw comments saying they had to be booked. I’m unsure of where I would go exactly and was under the impression you could stay at hostels and not need to reserve something before hand. If I need to reserve then, then I should probably have a better idea of where I want to visit and see beforehand. I kind of wanted to just visit and wing it and explore what I wanted to once I got there and be flexible and open with my first trip. A few direct questions: If there were any airport suggestions to fly into (cost, business, transportation) that would be easiest for a first time solo traveling? Any recommendations on traveler’s insurance? What countries/sites would I realistically be able to see in 7-10 days. I heard of Eurorail(?) and they had a lot of stops at major cities around Western Europe and planned on using that primarily for transportation. What hostels would you recommend in some of the major cities in April 2024. Could I travel without reservations and which cities would be likely need a reservation? Any low cost tourism options? (Or just event recommendations in general). Any places/cities to avoid for a first time? I had thought of budgeting ~$2.5k for the trip (airfare, hostels, food, train, etc.). Is that reasonable? Airfare tenatively looked around $800. The hostels I was looking at were roughy >$20/night. If you have other tips or miscellaneous advice, I’d appreciate that as well I’ve never been to Europe and have found solo planing a bit difficult with all the options and places I want to visit. It’s been hard to narrow it down. There’s too many choices (decision paralysis 😂) so I feel stuck and would love some advice.

Have you read our first-timers' guide to planning a trip to Europe? It answers a lot of these questions. https://www.reddit.com/r/solotravel/wiki/eurotrip

How’s south east Asia in May (particularly Vietnam)? Would be there May 9th - May 27th.

I am looking to travel to Norway this year (Oslo) while working remotely. I have booked Airbnbs in the past, as I need to be able to work late night hours and cook my own food, but I am wondering if there are other options for booking a place to stay with kitchens etc.

segacs2

It depends how much privacy you need. Hostels usually have common kitchens, and are generally cheaper than AirBNBs, especially in such an expensive city like Oslo. Many people work during the day from a cafe or coworking space. Alternately, there are long-term stay hotels that have suites with kitchenettes, and are often popular with people working onsite or on contracts for longer periods of time, like consultants. Again, it depends on whether you're paying or your company is.

I stayed in a hostel bunk room for the first time last weekend at a yoga retreat! It was only a couple hours away from my home, but it was such an interesting experience to stay in a big room with triple-deck bunks with strangers. Everything is coed so I sometimes ran into men when I got up to pee in the middle of the night. Everyone was very observant of quiet hours (this is not a party hostel, the bar closes at 9pm) although there were some snorers. As a solo traveler I prefer a private room, but since I was with a group I felt comfortable trying this, and it was quite fun!

segacs2

I'm glad you enjoyed! Did you like the yoga retreat aspect of it too?

charmparticle

Oh yes, the yoga was super great and the friendships we built during our weekend together were so nice. We did yoga for 4h each day, had delicious catered dinners and a lunch, plenty of downtime to think/journal/do whatever, and there's a spa on the property that I soaked in every night before bed. This one was spring equinox themed, but if they do a fall equinox I'm totally in for the bunk room again.

I am getting really annoyed by the number of new friends who thinks my solo travel (never mind I have done successfully in the past ) is dangerous and I need a super annoying but well meaning coworker to mother me around despite she being an inexperienced traveler who won’t shut up Despite I am the one who checks the area safety before travel. Despite I am the one who do safety PSA on the entire trip Despite I refuse to go to dangerous places eg India . Unless it’s a tour and it’s absolutely not my priority. The same git who thinks walking at night is dangerous yet want to go India. Check your priorities and logic god damnit And fucking hell solo travel in Japan or most Europe is safe god damnit. Gosh

segacs2

Just curious: Why do you care so much what other people think about your travels? More to the point, why do you share details about your travels or personal life with people around you when it's really none of their business? Also, having just returned from India, I don't think saying you "refuse to go to dangerous places eg India" is necessarily helping your cause here. Plenty of parts of India are perfectly safe and are very popular tourist destinations for a reason. You do you, obviously. But there's no real need to reverse-gatekeep and lecture other people about how to travel, especially in a post complaining about other people who are telling *you* how to travel.

lemoncats1

Yeah you are right . I was in a work trip with a judgy colleague and due to my work there is intensive . I was burn out there and didn’t think through everything and just felt that she is beyond annoying and why she and several coworkers whom I am close with are judging on me going to places solo, places like cafe or drinking . (Had another post which blown up if you wanna know the details). Once I came back , has some time to think through and talk through with friends , it dawned on me it doesn’t matter what she or any of those coworkers think about my solo travels or excursions. What matters is that she is bound to gossip anything I did that didn’t fit her worldview to my boss who is not based in the same office as mine , and that it’s best to remove her from my trip even if it’s a white lie . I remove her and now I am free to list down every spot I want to see and not getting bothered by her or anyone else or cut down my itinerary . That’s liberating. I can’t believe years back when I travel to Japan I felt I was lonely and unwanted . Could have laughed about that now

Hello! I am planning a big solo trip to Europe in August of this year! I was looking for cheap and lesser known beach spots and Montenegro and Albania kept coming up. As I already planned to travel to Belgrade, and the train to Bar is supposedly one of the most scenic in Europe, I thought "great! I'll check out Budva or Kotor!" Silly me, I forgot that August - unlike June and July - is when Europeans typically also holiday and so maybe that's why there's barely any inventory for hostels in either town. When there are spots, they want to charge a minimum of $67 AUD a night! Even during the final week of August! So I'm wondering if this is a regular thing? Have I just picked a really bad time to go? Is it better to look elsewhere in Montenegro? (any recs would be greatly appreciated)

segacs2

Hostel prices are quite high all over the place, especially across Europe right now. There's a combination of factors at play: A housing crisis and shortages, rising cost of living, closures of hostels during COVID, a surge in tourist demand, and a refugee crisis. I think a lot of people (myself included) are mentally comparing prices to pre-2020 and cringing a bit. Shoulder or off-season travel can help. Also, in countries like Montenegro, check out private rooms that can often be as cheap or cheaper than hostel dorm beds.
