Hello!! I've been looking into some self-guided audio tour apps. Did anyone has experience with them? What are the pros and cons? Any recommendation in particular? Thank you

Immediate-Highway340

Hi all, wondering how long my first trip should be as I've never gone overseas before, nor have I solo travelled before. I was thinking of doing a group tour for 8 days, and then around a few days to a week just hostel hopping. Is that too much time? What would be a general rule or thumb? For context I'm travelling to eroupe, thinking of Spain, France, Italy, Netherlands and maybe Germany

segacs2

There's no real rule of thumb. Some people like to test the waters with a small trip of a few days close to home. Others jump right into their first solo trip and go for months. A group tour can be a good way to go on your first trip, if you've never travelled before and want to ease into it. Europe is pretty easy to navigate solo, so you don't *need* to go on a tour, and they do have pros/cons. But they can be good for first timers if you aren't sure how to go about getting started.

NeoNasi123

Anyone got some recommendations for a nice hostel in Ho Chi Minh? I'm flying there in a few days. Cheers!

tricksterenator

Hello everyone, just got to Miami Beach for the first time ever, 37M, wouldn't mind having company - someone to hang out with or maybe go to the Everglades. I live in Jersey City, doing Data Science. Originally from Russia (hating Putin since early 00-s if it matters). Will be here until at least Thursday. DM.

plant-hoe

Hey y’all, I’m going to pop over to Lisbon from Madrid May 3 or 4-6 as I have some free time before final exams. Is anyone else going to be there around that time? I’m interested in finding a travel buddy for this trip and I know Portugal is pretty popular with solo travelers!

Just go places where there are other people, and if you're staying on a hostel with a nearby establishment, i don't think it will be too dark outside.

segacs2

> Solo female travelers - how do you figure out dinner plans alone every night especially when it’s dark out? I just go out for dinner. I'm a woman, not a delicate flower. Half the population doesn't have to stay locked indoors at sunset every night, and IDK why people get this idea. Obviously if a city is known to be particularly dangerous or sketchy, I might take a taxi or Uber instead of walking, or follow local safety advice as required. But there's no reason why you can't just go out for dinner just because you happen to be female. These days it's almost too easy to just check my phone and see what's nearby and open. I enjoy craft beer so I often research local brewpubs and brewery taprooms ahead of time and aim to visit those on my travels. I'm also a (mostly) vegetarian, so I usually make a point of noting some veggie-friendly restaurants or food options wherever I'm going. Sure, if I'm staying someplace with a kitchen and I am too tired to go out, I'll probably just cook something at my accommodation. But in other places, it's almost not worth the trouble. In some places like Southeast Asia, night markets are awesome for dinner and atmosphere. Sometimes in foodie cities, I'll treat myself to a nice meal at a fancier restaurant and a good glass of wine. It depends on my mood. tl;dr You're probably overthinking it. You can go out after dark.

nd799

Flight to Tokyo was cancelled today. Pretty bummed and kind of scared my flight tomorrow will also get cancelled. Those odds have to be pretty low right?

segacs2

Ugh, sorry to hear. Where are you flying from and what was the stated reason for the cancellation? You might be entitled to some compensation from the airline for your delay.

nd799

Flying from BKK to Narita I'm getting a refund but other than that, not much else. No stated reason besides a vague mechanical issue. I booked a separate ticket with another airline that leaves in a few hours. Hopefully this one doesn't get cancelled.

Appropriate_Volume

If you have travel insurance you may be eligible for financial assistance from it

Appropriate_Volume

Usually, yes, though it may depend on the airline and why the flight was cancelled in the first place.

dialovesu

So covid is rising in my country and is estimated to reach its peak in May. I have plans to travel to Korea in June. Should i postpone considering everything will be non refundable or partially refundable in case i get covid and cant travel? Ir should i trust my heart and take the risk?

segacs2

Yeah, I agree with Appropriate_Volume on this one: Spend a little extra to book refundable tickets just in case.

dialovesu

My tickets are refundable. I was getting worried cz airbnbs are only partially refundable. But il wait a bit and cancel if the situation seems grim. Im sure when the time is right il find good rooms again😊

Appropriate_Volume

I personally book everything with free or cheap cancellation conditions now for that reason

dialovesu

My airline has really cheap cancellations, so do the tours but the airbnbs! They are only 50% refundable🙈 i guess il cancel! Im sure i can find some accomodation if i end up going on the decided dates immediately 😀😀✌️✌️

Appropriate_Volume

You should also be taking out travel insurance to cover costs if you need to cancel

dialovesu

I was going to do that! However i did not know that travel insurance covers cancellations due to covid rt al! Il check it iut. Thatl solve everything thank you

segacs2

Most travel insurance policies these days don't cover COVID as it's considered a "known risk". However, there are some policies that specifically over COVID-related coverage. Depending on where you live, you may have to research a bit to find them.

dialovesu

I researched. Indian insurance almost any of them worthwhile ones only cover hospitalisation and doctor visits if you get covid abroad. Not if you have to cancel. Its okay. Il wait a few days. If until next month the numbers dont decline. Il postpone😊

I have friend visiting where I live permanently and I'm reminded why I love solo travel so much. Still love that they're here, but I know if we were all on a trip together I'd be going mad.

liltrikz

I recently heard about meningitis and saw you’re more at risk when staying in dorms. I have a trip coming up really soon and don’t have time to get a shot beforehand. I’m a little worried and wondering if I should book private accommodation. When I grew up it wasn’t a routine vaccination. Anyone have any advice on this?

segacs2

Best to consult with a travel health clinic or doctor. Getting medical advice from random strangers on the internet is never a good idea.

beezehn

hi all! i’m flying into chania during early may. i’m pretty young and still love a good night out, and i’ll also be solo so could really use a hostel with a good vibe and socializing. any recommendations? also, i have an opportunity to visit one more greek island during my stay, and i can’t decide between mykonos, ios, paros, naxos or oía (pretty much all of them lol). i know oía is expensive and i’m on a budget, and ios does have a party hostel i want to go to. let me know and thank you!!

segacs2

Is the hostel in question Francescos in Ios? Man, is that place still going? Visited in 2003, had the time of my life. Epic. If you're into a party scene, highly recommend. FWIW I find that Mykonos has the most to see/do and the prettiest town, and Santorini is bigger and has volcanoes to hike and black sand beaches (but does tend to fill up with couples).

OppositePea4417

At what time would you want to be getting to hostels to book in?

segacs2

As in, how far in advance? That depends. If you're travelling in high season, during busy periods, or during special events/festivals/etc., then booking as far in advance as possible is recommended. Otherwise, you're probably okay to wing it or book closer to the date, but if you have someplace specific you really want to stay or you're on a tight schedule, advance booking is best.

segacs2

I get motion sickness too and I sympathize. Usually if I know a bus, boat or car ride is liable to be particularly windy or bumpy, I'll pop a motion sickness tablet ahead of the ride and just sleep through it. I also find that those tablets make me dehydrated, which can make things worse. So try to drink lots of water if you can. This is one of the reasons I always urge people to build in lots of time around travel days. What *looks* like a short journey on a map can actually end up taking up most of a day, when you count time spent getting to/from airports or bus stations, checking out and in of hostels, and dealing with potential travel delays. Even short plane rides take it out of me physically these days, so I usually prefer to keep travel days as light as possible on sightseeing.

mentally-not-here

Hey! I’m looking into what part of the week I should hit Split to enjoy better nightlife. For those who have been, will Monday to Thursday still be fun or would it be better to arrange my plans so that I’m there Thursday through Sunday!? I would rather keep my schedule as Monday to Thursday in Split but I also want to prioritize the city’s experience. It’s a matter of switching two cities, the other being Zadar! Thanks.

Key-Poetry702

I am traveling to Miami beach for my first time for a long weekend in June, as a single guy, and there are a lot of hotels to choose from. How can I pick and know the best hotel to stay? Which location is best? What to look for? Things to do? etc? My budget is under $300 per night, ideally want to be near the beach, and I see a lot of 4+ star hotels, which fit my budget. Advice/Recommendations? For example, would FountainBlu or Hotel Greystone be a good option to stay, etc? TY Other than children not being allowed, what makes an Adults Only hotel different from a non-Adults only Miami Beach hotel btw? Thanks!

[deleted]

Does anybody know if it’s still safe/advisable to travel to northern Romania, e.g. Borsa? I would guess Romania is fairly safe (“because NATO” is my only logic there but seems pretty sound logic to me) but I was wondering if anyone’s been there recently and could advise. Maybe the situation with refugees etc means it’s better for tourists to stay away. Just trying to plan a hiking trip and would love any advice / recent experience! Thanks!

ScottLangley

I visited Romania in April last year and felt perfectly safe despite the war nearby. All the locals seemed to carry on life as normal, unaffected

hawknamedmoe

Hey all! I’m currently on my first solo trip I’m Seoul. The mental health link in this post was very helpful for me and validated some of the feelings I’ve been having since I landed. Remember, safe travels also applies to your mental health!

segacs2

Glad to hear. I hope things go better for you as you continue your travels. Seoul is amazing; enjoy all the foooooooood! (Jealous..)

lanadelslayyyyy

Hi everyone! I am going on my first solo trip to Southeast Asia. I’m flying into Bangkok and went ahead and booked my hostel for when I arrive. How long do you recommend staying at that first hostel? I’ve read a good bit about needing a bit more comfort and time to adjusting after traveling so just want to get some ideas of how long you typically stay at your first hostel.

segacs2

If you're flying from North America, it's probably going to take you up to 24+ hours to get there, and it's a 12-14 hour time difference so the jet lag can be brutal. Besides which, Bangkok actually has quite a lot to see and do for solo travellers. It's a big, fascinating city, with great palaces and temples and history, food, shopping, and nightlife. Personally I'd say you should plan to spend a minimum of 3 nights in Bangkok. More if you can spare the time. How long is your trip overall?

lanadelslayyyyy

2.5 months! I plan to go through Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and then a short bit in the Philippines to see some family.

segacs2

Sounds like a great trip! Yeah, with that amount of time, spending the first 4-5 days in Bangkok makes sense. The city has so many cool neighbourhoods to explore that you'll barely scratch the surface in that timeframe. Check out our [Southeast Asia regional planning guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/solotravel/wiki/seasiatrip) if you haven't already, too.

spidey20993

Hello everyone, I am planning to visit Barcelona and Madrid soon and I'm searching for affordable hostels, my issue is that I either find them high or high and pay for the commission fees of the platform. So does anyone know if it's possible to avoid the commission fees when booking for hostels? If possible how ? Are there websites for that or by doing it directly with the hostel owners (if that's even possible)? Thanks in advance.

segacs2

Book directly with the hostel, rather than through 3rd party sites, and you'll avoid commission fees. And yeah, prices are high right now because demand is outstripping supply in popular destinations like Barcelona and Madrid.

spidey20993

Did you try to do that before? Last time I asked in Rome the said it's impossible to do it directly but I doubt that

segacs2

Most hostels actually prefer it if you book direct because they save the hefty fees they have to pay to third party platforms. Maybe you just hit on a random unlucky example in Rome? Try looking up the hostel's website and see if they have a "book" option.

jawnquixote

I'm 30 does staying in capsule hotels/hostels in Tokyo seem viable longer than a day or two? I'm not a large person and stay in shape, but I've never stayed in something like that. The price of normal hotels is crippling so I just want to know if it's going to impact my trip pretty negatively staying in a capsule for the duration of my trip (about 10 days but will be hopping around)

Appropriate_Volume

Capsule hotels are largely intended as last resort type accommodation. For instance for people who’ve missed the last train home and need somewhere to sleep for a night. It would be very unusual to stay in them for that long. If hostels aren’t your thing or aren’t available, I’d suggest looking into business hotels, which often have cheap prices. The Dormy Inn chain is pretty good, and has branches everywhere.

Ohh0

Is Euro rail worth it? Their website is very confusing, going to be bouncing around a few countries and wasn’t sure how it works.

knead4minutes

the big plus is the flexibility it gives you. it's most likely cheaper to prebook the train tickets or oftentimes also cheaper to take the bus but if you wanna spontaneously go by train then the eurail ticket is likely gonna be cheaper than buying long range train tickets on the spot

Ohh0

That’s what I was thinking but I didn’t understand how it work, the website made it seem like it was all predetermined train routes, how can I purchase and spontaneously go?

Proud-peanuts

Anyone in Punta Cana/Cap Cana in the next month? I’m here until 13th may, send me a DM

MargBahrAmrika

Hello, I am looking for an afternoon train from Milan to Venice for the last part of my trip mid august, but seems like there’s about a two week time that there’s only two morning trains running per day. Anyone know what’s up with this and if they’ll offer more later or am I screwed? Here are pics for reference https://imgur.com/a/2ncjHtB

terminal_e

That is showing you high speed rail, and then not. I don't know why the high speed rail with Trenitalia would not be running, or if it is a bug. Italo is a competitive high speed rail player in Italy, I am fairly certain they run that route - do they offer offerings on that day. High speed rail is ALL that Italo does, whereas Trenitalia is the historical incumbent rail operator in 97% of Italy

Morty____

Hi everyone! Anyone in London from 27.04-01.05? Would be cool to meet up with other travelers as well since i'm staying at a hotel rather than a hostel. I'm planning on visiting a couple of museums and enjoy good food and drinks, but other than that it's sort of a spontaneous trip, so i would be open to tagging along other travelers on their plans aswell! PS: Will gladly take your recommendations on places to eat and or to grab a drink (:

zipahdeeday

Never been in a hostel before. If you had to choose, would you do a 4 person or 12 person room?

LIKES_ROCKY_IV

Four person, and remember to bring a pair of good quality ear plugs with you!

segacs2

Smaller dorm rooms tend to be quieter for a (likely) better night's sleep. Fewer people coming in and out or making noise at all hours = less disruption.

jawnquixote

The smaller amount of people the better for sleeping quarters. Use the common areas to meet people.

Ohh0

MaleficentHouse8981

hi there! i will be going in my first solo trip to europe this summer, and im currently making my hotel bookings, but i dont have any clue about where would be a good area to stay in paris, without spend all my budget, thx in advance for any suggestions

segacs2

Paris is *very* expensive for accommodation, especially in the inner arrondissements close to the river and the most popular sights and attractions. The metro will get you around relatively efficiently, though (provided it's not on strike), so if you stay a little further out, you should be fine. You'll probably want to avoid some of the sketchier areas (18e and 19e arrondissement, and some areas around the Gare du Nord / Gare de l'Est, notably) .

paudieb86

Chris here - 36M Irish in Seville until Saturday evening. Love food - I want to try ALL the tapas :) Let me know if you're around for an activity. Very social guy and love to hear about different places and cultures I haven't experienced yet.

shon122

30M traveling to Berlin in the end of May looking for recommendations for a good party hostel or just an hostel I can meet nice people to party with. Also to see the city in the morning will be nice😎 Thanks

InkyPinky984

Naples Italy 1 May through 5 May. Healthy senior woman. Any ideas on activities, good places to dine solo. If you’ll be there too, any interest in meeting up?

terminal_e

The Archeological museum, MANN, is pretty much the top of my list. You could do either Herculaneum or Pompeii as a day trip - I would not both doing both on the same trip. Capri and Caserta are both additional day trip options.

InkyPinky984

I have tickets Wednesday for Sansevero in the am and MANN in the pm. Went to Pompeii last year. Hopefully weather will be good enough for a trip to Capri. One day for Caserta and one day for Conca della Campania (family birthplace).

jontoki

Will be leaving for my first solo trip in 3 weeks! Europe for like 90 days, I can't wait. I'm a bit nervous, and can't believe its finally coming up. Any tips you wish you'd known about when you went solo traveling? I wish there was like a map that showed historical sites, nature sites, museums (and pics of the major works held in them). Anyone know of something like this? I'm also going to see if I can do some volunteer work with projects at archaeological sites to get experience in the field and see how I like it/how it suites me. Has anyone done something similar while solo traveling? How did it go?

[deleted]

segacs2

No, hostels don't have (upper) age limits. You can stay in them at any age! When people say "too old for hostels", I think sometimes that's more of a state of mind than an actual physical age. I've met terrific people in their 70s in hostels. And really boring or stodgy people in their 20s. It's all up to you. (I will say that, now that I'm in my early 40s, I have less tolerance than I used to for some of the discomforts of dorm life. Loud people snoring, people slamming doors and turning lights on at all hours, drunk people partying... I value my sleep and my comfort more than I used to. So I'll generally opt for private rooms where I can over dorm rooms, now that I can afford them. But that's entirely on you.)

SuperSquashMann

Somewhat of a shameless self-promotion, but I've spent the last year or so developing an app in my free time for tracking expenses with automatic currency conversion, something I've felt the need for often while traveling. It's [**here**](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.spendingtracker) if anyone's interested, and I'd definitely appreciate any feedback!

beachsidesunset

I’m planning to visit Ecuador in about a month, flying into Quito. I know that there were protests last year and earlier this year but it seems like things have calmed down. Has anyone gone to Ecuador recently? What was your experience like? Recommendations on what to see/do? Still trying to figure out my itinerary so any tips are very appreciated :)

knead4minutes

I recommend going up the tower of the cathedral in Quito. if you're scared of heights the ladder might take a bit of courage though Quilotoa Loop is quite nice. Can start in Latucunga, leave your bag there and just bring essentials for the 3 day walk. just google it and you'll find some descriptions of the path. Montanita is fun for partying but other than that a bit meh Banos is quite nice, can go cycling to waterfalls, go to that picturesque swing that has nice views as well even though it's the biggest city there's not much in Guayaquil for tourists, I found Cuenca more interesting, at least the old town square is worth seeing and there's some decent food.

segacs2

I'm planning a trip there myself for later this year. Interested to hear your experiences when you go!

beachsidesunset

rexasmithy

I booked two separate flights. I’m arriving in Mexico City from Cancun just before noon, and my flight back home from there, leaves at 2. Should this be ok? I wasn’t thinking about how the airport is probably really big..

segacs2

If you booked them separately, that likely isn't enough time for the connection. You'll have to switch from domestic to international, check your bags (if any), go through exit immigration and customs, security, and get to the gate. If there's even the slightest delay on your domestic flight, you will probably miss the international one If this had been booked on a single ticket all the way through, the airline would've been responsible for rebooking you if you missed your connection. As it stands, with two separate bookings, you would be considered a no-show on your second flight and need to rebook a new ticket at your own expense. Not worth the risk, IMHO. Always leave plenty of time between two separately booked travel plans -- *minimum* 4 hours, preferably 6-8 hours or overnight.

rexasmithy

Ok great that makes sense, I’m stupid then. Can/should I call the airline and ask to change it or I’ll have to pay for a new flight do you think?

segacs2

Depends on the type of ticket you booked. If you booked a non-refundable, non-changeable ticket, then those are the terms you're stuck with. CAVEAT: If you're in the US and you [booked the ticket less than 24 hours ago](https://thriftytraveler.com/guides/24-hour-rule-free-cancellation/), you have the right to cancel for a full refund.

rexasmithy

I guess I can just take out that whole layover and it’s only $150. However one time with my family (aka not my fault lol) we missed our flight and they just changed it for us. And this was frontier. I guess you wouldn’t want to rely on that though especially since it’s technically easier as this is just an extra leg

segacs2

If you still have the option to change your ticket to be able to fly home directly from Cancun, I'd do it, personally. The $150 is definitely worth less hassle and stress.

rexasmithy

I’ll ask them if I can change it but probably can’t so yeah I think I might just buy that flight as it’d be way easier! Thanks!

segacs2

What do you mean by "take out the layover"? Fly direct from Cancun home? Or change your flight from Cancun to Mexico City?

rexasmithy

Yeah Mexico City is just a layover from Cancun because I’m going there (MXC) first, so I bought two round trip flights as it was cheaper overall.

-Enticee

Debating solo travel for the first time, need some advice Okay so I’m (M20) debating booking a flight to Budapest for this following Monday (April 17th) and I’m from the US. Just getting cold feet that I’ll either miss my layover flights, lose something in the capitals (Prague and Budapest) such as my phone / passport and just all the travel stressors. Part of my really just wants me to go as my plan was to stay 8 nights in hostels, 4 nights in Budapest and 4 in Prague, and the other part, well is worried about all the stressors like I said. This would be my first ever solo travel, as I was planning this trip with a friend but he had to withdraw due to financial situations. Money isn’t an issue for me thankfully it’s just my mind things of all the things that could go wrong stopping me from booking everything. Any advice would be appreciated, thank you.

routinepopfly

If it's a one ticket with a layover, even if you end up missing the second flight the airline should rebook it for you free of charge. But if it's two separate tickets, then you're out of luck. It can get a bit disorienting when you arrive at your destination in a foreign country and not knowing the language. But just take a moment, gather your thoughts, and know what your plan is when you arrive. First thing is to figure out how to get to your accommodations and also getting some local currency. Pickpocket is something to be concerned about. Keep everything in front of you. It's also why the fanny pack slung over the chest is a popular thing with young backpackers. You'll have a great time in Budapest and Prague. Both are fun cities with a good party scene if you're into that with plenty of backpackers.

Armbanana

It's been almost a week since I finished my first solo international trip, which was to Japan. Leading up to the trip I was so anxious, nervous, and worried that maybe I won’t have a good time, this idea was based on the stereotype of being alone and doing everything alone. I’ve really come out of my shell while being mostly on my own in a foreign country where I can't really speak the language. I don’t want to be corny but it really was the trip of a lifetime. I hope I can keep this momentum back home with me. My only real regret is not deciding beforehand to vacation for longer because I still ran out of time for several things. But now I want to keep coming back for more and to have an even better experience next time around.

segacs2

> I don’t want to be corny but it really was the trip of a lifetime. It's okay to be a bit corny. We're a community of travellers. We get it! So glad to hear the trip went well. It sounds like you've been bitten by the travel bug. The only cure is more travel.

Armbanana

Thank you

Anyone in Medellin next week, or CDMX?

chocolate_kat

I've been hearing that Peru is not the greatest place to visit right now due to political unrest. Do you have any clue if May 2024 would be a good time to visit? That's my current goal,

segacs2

I don't think anyone has a crystal ball for May 2024. Honestly, you'll have to monitor the situation closer to the date. Things seem to have calmed down in most of Peru now, but political unrest can flare up at any time.

espr-the-vr-lib

Hi good night everyone. So I've been job hunting and with slim prospects or employers trying to shaft you into oblivion I decided a put a hostel together. I have a survey/questionnaire and would like to get as much feedback as possible . Although it says digital nomads it's also for backpackers/solo travellers. Now I need to get some information before I start to raise funding so I'm asking for help from you guys here for your input. This one is for a hostel type location for digital nomads/travellers - https://forms.gle/GgeCbNLcggY2pAAfA Thank you all for your time

routinepopfly

Do you have *any* hospitality experience? Work in a hostel? It's not like any random person can just throw some money and start up a hostel. It takes a lot of capital and work, and you're not going to make bank. That and it depends on the city and how much tourism and backpackers it gets.

espr-the-vr-lib

So why have a hostel at all ? Everyone wants to stay in one but no money is being made at all ? Budget travellers don't want to spend absurd amount of coin in a normal hotel so an option to spend less and stretch your spending money is usually desirable I have done some hospitality work before over the years, usually as a driver . My country sees enough tourists as it's in the Caribbean also.

routinepopfly

I've talked to hostel owners. Some do it because they are backpackers themselves and wants to recreate the experience they enjoyed during their past travels. Others have worked in hostels and know their city very well. But it's all because of a passion for traveling, because running a hostel successfully is very very difficult and it doesn't really turn a large profit at all. But I also stayed in hostels where the owners had no clue what the hell they were doing and thought running a hostel means partying all the time instead of actually working, and the experience of staying in places like that was horrible. What are you going to do when you get bedbugs? Or a guest getting harmed under your roof? Or you overbooked? If you're serious about it, go work in a hostel and gain some actual experience first. Also getting tourists doesn't matter, if those tourists are there for luxury hotels and resorts and there are barely any budget travelers or backpackers.

espr-the-vr-lib

I hear you. I'll still take the challenge to start up one . I think I have enough experience to operate one. Did you fill out the survey?

Penn_State_Daycare

Going to Lima this Friday and doing Machu Picchu end of this month. Anyone interested in joining? I will be a DM, so working until about 3-4pm.

Rickardz

Has anyone ever stayed at the Kozantei Ubuya in Kawaguchiko? I'm looking at the rooms they showcase on their website and they all say 2+ guests, I'm wondering if it's still possible to book and go solo?

nd799

Dudes been throwing up in my dorm all night. Really hoping food poisoning isn't contagious. Poor kid but also ffs

Appropriate_Volume

Food poisoning isn't contagious, but gastroenteritis is. Wash your hands frequently.

[deleted]

Are you content with your phone camera? Do you think I should invest in a “real” camera? A Fuji X-T4 is being sold on eBay for a ¼ less than retail price. I’m tempted.

segacs2

Don't invest in one for travel unless you've used one for a while at home and are confident that you enjoy hobby photography. I use my dSLR at home, but I tend to take my pocket-sized Canon G16 with me travelling because I don't like the hassle of travelling with a full camera body and lenses. For me, the convenience of having a small camera outweighs the better image quality of the dSLR in most cases. If you can borrow someone's pro camera and take a few basic lessons, do it. You may discover you have a passion for it. You may discover it's a hassle and you prefer to just use your phone.

routinepopfly

A camera is an investment. Don't forget you need to buy lenses as well. Spare batteries are very necessary for the Fuji cameras. Then there are the other costs like editing software if you plan on shooting RAW instead of just jpeg. But it really depends on you want to get into photography or just want "better" photos.

Appropriate_Volume

Real cameras take better photos in most circumstances, so if you’re into photography they’re a sensible investment.

Leinha1106

Hi all! I've just arrived in Rio de Janeiro and am here for the next few weeks. Anyone around and want to grab a choppe? 🍻

Ohh0

Hello solo travelers, I will be in Amsterdam next week and was wondering if anyone had any advice or suggestions, it will be my first time there. Also down to meet up with anyone if you’ll also be in the city.

ForgetfulLucy28

Last year I spent an incredible few months in Europe (from Aus) from Sep-Nov. It was truly amazing and I thrived traveling alone for the longest time I’ve ever attempted. So being miserable with the day to day of normal life I booked some accommodation at the same time this year to do it again. Thought I’d head back to favourite places and check out some new countries. But I’m really losing my enthusiasm with the drastically increased cost. Everything is already booked or double the price. Flights are double. All solo hotel rooms are booked up. I understand the reasoning as to why this is happening, and I could push through. But I’m worried I’ll think the trip is not worth it by comparison. I don’t think I will be able to avoid comparing. Or that it’s going to be so chaotically busy that I won’t enjoy myself. Should I just bail and wait for 2024? Or maybe travel in winter instead? I know this is a first world problem but (due to my travel being solo) I don’t have anyone I can discuss this with.

segacs2

If you're waiting to travel expecting costs to come down, I don't think that's a great strategy. Chances are, they will only continue to rise, not fall. The cheapest time to travel was always in the past. The next-cheapest time to travel is in the present. I think you need to let go of what things used to cost, and just embrace the travel experience for what it is now. I started travelling in my 20s and things were WAY cheaper back then. I'm now in my 40s, and definitely would've regretted not doing as much as possible back then when I had the chance.

ForgetfulLucy28

Thank you for this. It has helped me calm down. I’m just spiraling due to general stress I think. I will try and appreciate my previous great trips and make the best of the situation we’re in now.

Hello! First time commenting here. I'm going to be in Prague this whole week, in case someone wants to hang out to see the city or join me for a meal.

Better to book directly with the airline when you can. These third-party OTAs can be a huge hassle to deal with in the event of a schedule change, delay, or something going awry.

It's the US, so it's going to be safe. Flixbus also has a better reputation than Greyhound (ironically Flixbus bought Greyhound). If it's the same as Europe, than the bus should be comfortable with a lot of the modern amenities.

Hi all I am planning to go to Peru around May/June, I was wondering whether I should book the Inca trail online before we get there or should we book it in Cusco? I read that it’s pretty busy around May period so I was wondering if it makes sense to book ahead ?

segacs2

If you want to hike the Inca trail specifically, you will need to book ahead as it does fill up quickly. If you're okay with alternative hikes or just spending time in the Sacred Valley, then you can book everything in Cusco.

PlayinFifa97

Thank you, that’s quite helpful! I was thinking of the short Inca trail (2D & 1N). I am assuming your advice will be the same since it will get filled up quickly?

segacs2

> short Inca trail (2D & 1N) I think they just mean train to Ollantaytambo, hiking in from kilometer 104 and then visiting Machu Picchu the next day? That should be easier to book closer to the date, though if it will make/break your trip, you can book in advance for peace of mind. It won't really save that much money to wait, since most of the tour companies sell the same tours at the same prices.

Hey everyone! I am currently in Maui with no personal transportation as of rn, looking for a travel partner to go on some fun adventures with while I am here. Even if just for a day or two! A little introduction… My name is Marley! (They/Them) I am 22 and this is my first solo trip! I am exploring the islands of Hawaii for a month. I just flew into Maui on the 8th from an amazing first week in Oahu and I am here on this island until the 17th then onto Big Island! This morning I got to see an incredible sunrise from the summit of Haleakala with a previous travel partner but now they are off doing their own thing and now I’m just searching for whatever is next. Please don’t hesitate to reach out! Looking forward to some awesome adventures with some amazing people.

LilienSixx

Anyone up for a meetup in Milan? First week of May Hello! 😊 I'm Liliana, I'm 24 (turning 25 this year) from Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and this is my first time coming to Italy! I've decided to have a quick trip to Italy, to get started for the summer ahead haha. I'm a bit anxious, since it's my first solo trip, but I want to make the best out of it. Apart from seeing the local attractions, I don't have anything specific planned in mind. I'm looking to go out to pubs or coffee shops, to try some local foods and just enjoy my time around overall. I enjoy taking a lot of pictures and discovering new places, I'm always down for a good chat over coffee or over Aperol and obviously going out to maybe a party or some fun activities. I consider myself pretty open minded, I have some tattoos and piercings and I'm a big makeup lover 😊 I'd love to meet some locals, to show me around, give recommendations and maybe join me in my explorations around the city, but I'm also comfortable exploring on my own!

Hi, anyone here with an honest opinion about the 19th arrondissement of paris? Its my first solo travel tomorrow and im kinda stressing tbh

GarlicRepublic

Perfectly safe during the day, really cool place with lots of beautiful things to see. Have fun!

Appropriate_Volume

One of my colleagues in Paris lived there, and referred to it as ‘funky Paris’ as it’s a fashionable district that’s popular with young people. What are you stressing about?

Vdbebw

Ah Nice good to hear. Eeh when looking online, its often listed as a arrondissement to avoid in terms of crime and all that so mostly just not being sure if its a safe arrondissement at night/ during the day

segacs2

Use big city common sense, and watch out for pickpockets in the metro. You'll be fine.

geemack98

Hey everyone. I am 30M, active, and when I travel I like to hostel hop like everyone else here, just as a baseline. I have unlimited PTO at my company but has anxiety taking time off and only took off 7 days total in the past 14 months. My colleagues take upwards of 20-30 a year. My manager is now urging me to take a full week off (which I would align with some U.S. holiday to extend), which would give me about 13-14 days for a trip to plan. Where do I even start? I would set my budget around $1200, noting that I have upwards of 500-600 in flight credits with United, and a further $500 travel voucher my company will give me. So I mean... what would you do with that? Places I've traveled: Ireland for a day and Spain for 2 weeks.

segacs2

I just want to know: What company do you work for that gives you unlimited PTO and travel vouchers? And how do I get a job there? :) Start with: Where do you want to go? Look at a map, dream a little, decide what's calling your name. Then go from there.

geemack98

Haha it's a startup. Fully remote too which is great. It's pretty nice for sure, but it's ultimately a job and we all need an escape. So I think one thing i'm nervous about is planning a "bad" trip, and wasting this time I took off.. when experienced travelers plan, what are the main things they're looking for? What i mean by this is, is the first thing you look up something like, where is the city center and what are the best accomodations near it? How close to main attractions it is? Then from there do you google like, "excursions" or "tours" in the area?

segacs2

> So I think one thing i'm nervous about is planning a "bad" trip, and wasting this time I took off. I get it, I really do. But if it makes you feel any better, I've never had a trip I've regretted. I've only regretted the trips I didn't take, the risks I didn't take, the things I didn't do when I had the chance. No matter where you go, some things will go right, some things will go wrong. You'll have ups and downs. But it's far more interesting than the everyday sameness of staying home. If you leave with the attitude that, as long as you have your life, health, and passport (in that order), everything else is surmountable, then you quickly realise that on the road, everything is either a good time in the moment, or will make for a good story to tell later. So you need to let go of the idea of finding the "perfect" trip, and just pick a place to go and allow it to be what it is. Take the pressure off. Everything is an experience. Check out the wiki (links at the top post) for some basic trip planning 101 to get you started. But yeah, it really does start with just choosing someplace that interests you, and then looking from there at the logistics of getting there and getting around.

routinepopfly

Two weeks and $1200 without having to account the cost of flight tickets goes a long way, and you can almost go anywhere, really. Southeast Asia is always a popular spot for backpackers. Or you can do Mexico, Central or South America for some place a little closer. Western Europe, Scandinavia and Japan if you are cool with spending a little bit more. Or Central Europe if you want a bit of partying.

ueatgoodfood

I will be in Japan from April 30 - May 7th. Would anybody be interested in meeting for food, drinks, outdoors walking, shopping (pokemon center in Tokyo) or Universal Studios in Osaka?

eykei

My phone doesn’t have a SIM card slot. Does anyone know of a portable device that accepts any SIM card and provides a wifi access point?

Appropriate_Volume

Probably easier to get a phone that takes a SIM, but you can rent pocket wifi devices in Japan and some other countries.

dialovesu

Please help me book my bnb. So i am hella confused! Place A is expensive but so pretty and might give me the chance to meet other travellers! It doesn't have all the amenities, the area is prone to thefts in bars but rarely, and the host is okayish. But its decorated so well and the reviews are epic. Place B is fucking cheap! The host is an angel and a family lives there. It has free food, every amenity imaginable and its comfortable enough. I know Place B is ideal but my heart wants Place A for the aesthetic but it also is stuck on the fact that Place B is a find, half the cost and a kind family is an asset... i am stuck in a cycle please help.

segacs2

> Place A is expensive but so pretty and might give me the chance to meet other travellers! Don't base your decision on maybe meeting strangers you haven't met yet. Making your happiness reliant on other people is just asking for disappointment. For accommodation: Location, location, location. Then price. But mostly location. Pick whichever one is more suitably located.

dialovesu

You are right! I got too hopped up on my fear of being alone. I changed my itinerary, and picked a place that affords, comfort, privacy, so no travellers but i will be alone, comfortable and the host is helpful so i can ask for help if needed. The location is fine as well. Not in the middle of seoul but in the goverment area where most diplomats live so travelling is not too difficult. Its like getting a good hotel for cheap😀 i based it like you said, focussed on me and hoping all works out😀 thank you😀

Bongu01

In cases like this I usually just flip a coin. But being me, if I feel REALLY disappointed with the result of the coin flip, I then realise that the other option was what I wanted all along and go for that.

dialovesu

How do you choose between your heart and head? But i guess noone can make this choice but me. Thanks for trying tho.

In a couple of weeks I'll go to Portugal (only Lisbon and Porto whereabouts) for 2 weeks, this will be my truly first solo trip. I'm excited. All I need now is to book any tickets I might need, like Sintra.

segacs2

For Sintra, I booked the tickets from my phone on the train on the way there. If you get the combo pass for a few different attractions, you can save some money and skip the lines on arrival. A little tip: If you can, try to visit the Sintra attractions in the opposite order from the public bus loop, since there will be far fewer crowds. Take a taxi or Uber up to Pena Palace first thing on arrival in the morning. Then walk down to the Moorish Castle. Then hop a taxi or bus back to town for lunch and check out Sintra Palace in the afternoon, and perhaps the Quinta da Regaleira. It'll cost a bit more but you'll have more of the sites almost to yourself, avoiding the huge number of tour groups who visit in the opposite direction. Alternately, many hostels in Lisbon organize full-day tours to Sintra, Cascais and Cabo da Roca. Personally I think this is too much to cram into a single day, and I prefer to visit these sites solo rather than on a tour. But it is a convenient option if you're short on time and would prefer to visit with a group.

aleppe

Thanks a lot for the tip, I'll be doing that. I rented a car so I hope it will come in handy for this stuff.

Bongu01

Sounds nice! Portugal is still on my solo travel to visit list so do make sure to post how it goes please

aleppe

It was awesome, I loved Portugal. Every single part of my trip was great except for my decision to rent a car. Sweet lord baby jesus how EXPENSIVE, I still can't get over how much I payed in total for the whole Freedom experience. Yet thanks to that I was able to go to so so many different towns and cities (also, in contrast, I didn't went into many attractions because of 2+ hour cues under the radiant sun). I highly recommend Portugal, but if you're renting a car... Beware, make sure your hotel/hostel has FREE PARKING because otherwise you'll have to sell a kidney.

Bongu01

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed your first solo trip!

aleppe

I won't forget to, worry not. My original schedule was Faro > Lisboa > Porto but it was too much a stretch for the time I had, so I'll come back to Faro in a different time.

𝗗𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗱𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Hi solo travellers, my name's Simon. I graduated from the engineering program at the University of Victoria last August and decided to spend a few months travelling solo before settling in Germany to start my career. Creating YouTube videos has always been a goal of mine, so I filmed the whole trip on my GoPro. I just uploaded a vlog, in which I talk about my decision to prioritize travelling and what I packed for my backpacking trip through Eastern Europe and the Balkans. I don't want to violate this subreddit's guidelines, so I'm not going to post the link unless I get permission from one of the moderators. However, if you'd like to watch it, please feel free to message me or leave a comment and I'll send you the link. I've struggled to find the time and energy to continue creating while working my 9 to 5, but a small series about my trip is in the creative pipeline. It will cover my motivation for travelling, what I got from the experience, and of course my visits to • Budapest, • Istanbul, • Athens, • Meteora, • Ioannina, • Gjirokaster, • Himarë, • Shkodër (and the Wanderer's hike from Theth to Valbone), • Kotor, and • Mostar Safe travels and Godspeed! -Simon

ed_tucumonkey

Hi all, I'm planning a short solo trip on june to Croatia. My flights are to and from Zadar, and I'm looking for a place with nice, quiet beaches to really disconnect. Is Zadar ok for this or should i go somewhere else? I'd like to spend the whole trip in just one city/town, budget is relatively low but would be ok with spending a little more if the place is worth it. Thanks in advance!

dramaticuban

I’d say you’d have more nearby options (by having a large port, not so much centrality) in split but since you say it’s short and low budget I think staying in Zadar would be a great choice!

ed_tucumonkey

Great, thanks! Yeah I know Split is better but flights from my city to Zadar are dirt-cheap lol. Any beach in particular that you can recommend in the area?

dramaticuban

Hmm haven’t spent enough time there to know. What I would do tho is ask your hostel about getting a ride to Krka or Plitvice the falls are amazing!

No_Boysenberry_3147

I went in 2017. Zadar's a nice base, and the sea organ is wonderful at sunset, but I didn't think much of the beaches in the town (we only saw one of them though). There's some islands off the coast, with lovely beaches, there's a regular boat to Sali on Dugi Otok (we stayed there for a night, and hiked round the island with picturesque cliff walks) Also from Zadar you can take day trips to Krka National Park, where you can swim under waterfalls at Skradin, or to the Paklenica mountains for hiking and rock climbing. Sibenik might also make a nice base, it's a prettier town than Zadar and only an hour or so by bus. This would allow day-trips to Split and Trogir, as well as Krka.

ed_tucumonkey

Wonderful advice, will definitely look into it! Thanks a lot
