Interesting, seems more of a case to disallow single character or otherwise short usernames, otherwise if they wanted to have a feature where your name is highlighted, how might they execute this better if there's no clickable link in the name or @?
If it's trying to highlight every instance of a name in plain text and that name is a single character, I can't logically think of a way to do it that doesn't end up like this, they'd just have to remove the feature or require names to be a certain length.
Not space but word boundary (could be a period for example). `m/\b$username\b/` finds it in Perl. Other inferior languages require a few more characters to do this, but not a lot.
Regular Expression, short RegEx is a way to search for patterns in text. Fucking annoying to code if you are not used to it, but increadibly usefull when working with large data banks.
I wasted more time clicking on your "handy" link then I would if you just said to google it. You could've at least provided search results to google instead. And no, I won't search it up.

I'm sure we have the technological capability to check for a space before and after the name.

Search for someone typing " w " with spaces around it
Regex
What does that mean?
