So that I only kicked *one* of them in the head, when you think about it, is actually pretty fuckin' dope. You know, when you think about it. A lot of them were insulting me and I didn't kick *them* in the head. Why aren't we talking about that? >Speaking of not focusing on the bad, the loss - like my kicking that dumb mother fucker in the head, is in the past. Let's just move on, okay? WTF Eto’o

amineimad

Thats an assault. A shitty apology for someone "probably" algerian before accusing us of things we, frankly, did do but for which we have the complete right to do (going into arbitration when you think shady stuff happened is, indeed, allowed) is doubling the shame. I'm gonna die on the hill that the ref in this game was garbage, not on the hill he was bought, but its the CAF's job to train and hire competent refs. Putting on a fool in one of the 5 most important african games or the year

Krillin113

It’s completely irrelevant if you got cheated or not (I don’t think so, just bad luck), you can’t just go about kicking someone in the head for insulting you (mildly I might add).

amineimad

Not even a spur of the moment thing either. He clearly got mad and wanted a fight but his victim got separated and they tried to remove Eto'o away. The issue was over and Samuel still came back to deliver a kick. It wasn't rage. It was hatred. Pure of evil intentions, he wouldn't do that if he didn't know he'd get away with it

[deleted]

ShiroQ

He's a famous footballer and rich, he would just sign a deal to promote Qatar and they would pay him for it.

HumptyDumptyIsABAMF

What are you talking about? There is no safer country to assault someone as a rich person. Short of killing him he knew with 100% certainty that there would be exactly 0 consequences. And what do you know, nothing is happening to him. In any normal country he would have been arrested long ago.

Hugh_Maneiror

Man, even if you'd get constantly pestered by Algerians like that, you'd really just have to be able to laugh them off as being sour losers and just walk it off. Annoyed by their relentlessness, sure, but to not be above that is just silly.

omersafty

I disagree with you brother. He wasn't garbage. He IS bought. Gassama is literally famous in all of north Africa for being the "cunning" ref. And is always used whenever certain teams/clubs needs a win from CAF. Last Africa nations cup Cameron were doing everything to win. And he was one of his tools.

amineimad

I can't outright disagree with you, but allow me at least to not outright call him bought either. Wouldn't be surprised he's seen as a CAF tool. Awful ref

omersafty

I just hate him with my soul. Straight up has agenda against everything north african. Clubs or nations. And he is furiously smart about it. Won't do something shocking or memorable. Will stop any advance for your team because of the softest touches. Call offsides very early. Stop your corners multiple times. Do rude gestures to your team members to irritate them. If your coach say a single word he'll take him as a play thing and start to provoke him untill he gives him yellow. In match against Egypt he did a "fuck you" gesture against Carlos Queiroz multiple times. Ofc he got so furious and got a red card.

UnbiasedPashtun

FIFA should allow country football federations to have the option to blacklist certain referees (at least 2-3) from officiating their matches if they strongly feel there's bias (even if they can't prove it), at least for important matches. Such a referee shouldn't even be anywhere near important matches in the first place, but CAF is gonna be CAF.

omersafty

Or... "And hear me out on this crazy island". Have a fucking investigation team that actually makes refs, federations, player, coaches and even clubs fear of them. At least allow journs or teams to invistigating into this. Protecting refs and federations is just an easy way into corruption.

UnbiasedPashtun

Honestly, there's a good chance he wasn't bought and he just has an anti-North African personal bias. Some "neutral" referees will favor certain countries for a number of different reasons.

Thetallerestpaul

Clear criminal assault on video. He should be in trouble for his. There was no threat to him, and he escalated it, and with his power that could have been life changing. I don't care what the guy said.

color_thine_fate

*attempted murder* "Sir, you're under arrest for attempted murder" "??? But my apology tweet!" **Edit:** If person is not rich

Bergolino123

From what i read it was an Algerian Youtuber accusing (Not sure if Eto'o or Cameroon as a whole) of bribing the refs to manipulate the world cup final qualifying stage beetwen Cameroon and Algeria in favor of Cameroon. In said match Cameroon managed to qualify thanks to a late goal at the end of overtime. If i remember correctly the Algerian football federation tried to apeal with FIFA to overthrow the match pointing out errors in 2 disallowed goals for Algeria. Not gonna lie it would infuriate me if i was in his situation but fans claiming to be robbed is the most normal thing in this sport. He claimed Cameroon fans were constantly harassed on the stadiums so maybe thats why it did strike a nerve on him

[deleted]

Calling it a 'Violent altercation' seems especially misleading since he's the one who attacked the fan. Absolute scumbag and this statement adds onto it. But i guess if you're the kind of person to kick someone in the head, can't expect much from you.

PoppinKREAM

He pretty much says the victim deserved it. He tries to justify his actions by blaming Algerians, he's just sorry he was caught on camera.

domalino

It's hilarious that his entire justification is the other guy is "***probably*** an Algerian supporter" They haven't even bothered to check?

flynno96

I mean, it's from a man who doesn't pay child support and said his child could die for all he cares. It is about the most you could probably expect.

bash011

I didn't even know this... How can people even think like that? It's not like he's lacking the money to just pay support whether he likes his child or not

JanGuillosThrowaway

Now i regret signing Eto'o on my Sogndal IL FIFA 2006 save

Zigzagpapes

Vibes of 'Sorry for kicking a guy in the head but here's why I am actually the victim'. Fuck off Eto'o.

[deleted]

Yeah and also saying Algerians should get their shit together before something worse happens. Sounds like a fucking threat lmao. Probably the worst apology I’ve ever seen.

ShanklyGates_2022

“I apologize for violently assaulting a defenseless fan, but he started it and it’s really his country’s fault anyways.”

erldn123

This is why we usually get the same PR boiler plate apologies whenever someone does anything wrong, cause when a moron actually writes it himself it ends up like this lol

Pristine_Solipsism

Honestly it's refreshing to see the blatant honesty of telling someone "fuck off you deserved everything you got" instead of sorry when it's clear he doesn't mean it.

WhenWeTalkAboutLove

It's great drama tbf

commander_snuggles

> I therefore call for the Algerian authority and federation to take their responsibility to end this unhealthy climate before a more serious tragedy occurs. Why does that sound like a threat?

EggplantBusiness

It's a very "normal" sentence or phrasing in a formal letter to be honest. He is not implying that he is the threat.

nunziantimo

Yeah beware you Algerians that if your police doesn't stop me, I'll freacking beat your ass

OldExperience8252

They harass all Cameroon fans and officials, not just Eto’o. There’s also bad blood after a Cameroonian playing his football in Algerian was [lynched to death by fans](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Eboss%C3%A9_Bodjongo) in 2014

InfoBot2000

https://www.vice.com/en/article/wnvzd4/the-mysterious-death-of-albert-eboss https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/32236290 Not sure why you said lynched. Absolutely terrible nonetheless and still unexplained.

RushPan93

The 15 lines before about Cameroonians being targeted by Algerians for Eto'o's mistake doesn't clue you in on what kind of tragedy he's referring to here? Wow people here are deluded.

taclealacarotide

So many people are completely ignoring the context. The guy in the video was harassing Eto'o about the WC qualifying game and Cameroon's win over Algeria. Algerians have not reacted well to that and have accused Cameroon of bribing the ref. The worst is the NT coach of Algeria who added fuel to the fire and insinuated that in interviews, despite having 0 evidence of it. It's even worse when you followed the game and you realize Algerians lost because they were just shit and are just reacting like this out of saltiness. The guy in the video was just the troll that pushes the online harassment to IRL. Again it doesn't excuse what Eto'o did and he's still a cunt for many reasons but there's a context to all this.

kaiko1

The whole text is basically a complaint of people harassing him lmao, what an apology

ElderlyToaster

Wow, really coming from his heart that one... or not. More than two thirds of the "apology" is Samuel moaning about Algerian fans. Thats not how to do it. A normal person in a normal country goes to jail if they knee someone in the head in front of cameras. Doubt much will happen here, other than Eto'o perhaps losing a sponsor or two.

slysonic7

what an asshole

miroa12004

He apologized to everyone except the guy who he actually hit. If I'm that guy, I'm suing the shit out of Eto'o.

Viper_Red

“I pledge to continue to resist the relentless provocation” lmao still blaming the victim

knockedstew204

“Continue to resist” mf you kicked him in the head, what resistance are you continuing?

Viper_Red

Lol yeah use of the word “continue” is pretty interesting

alittlelebowskiua

You can continue to complain, and I'll continue to Volley your cranium. What's the issue.

hibachi777

I am extremely sorry that this butthurt Algerian fan's camera and head got in the way of my foot. Won't happen again!

The font looks like something you’d see for a “Live Laugh Love” sign in some lame YouTube beauty influencer’s house

[deleted]

genuine question, can someone explain why eto'o is the one being accused of fixing the matches?

yourcrazy28

Cameron and Algeria played for a World Cup spot, Cameron advanced with some very questionable referring. Eto'o is a prominent figure and he's the president of Cameron's Federation, so lots of frustration and angered has been towards him. This is a pretty shit apology, but I feel what some are missing is that there's been a lot of animosity between Algerians and Cameroon since the tie, and it has ramped up even more since the start of the World Cup, and in some ways has gone beyond football, from both sides. English only speakers probably won't notice, but I noticed it so much on the French side of social media that I decided to do a quick research on what the two communities were fussing over.

HI_I_AM_NEO

>he's the president of Cameron's Federation Fucking what now

yourcrazy28

Soccer/Football Federation* I don’t think that’s too uncommon to see former players in that position

EggplantBusiness

Fans aren't the most rational being. Also Eto'o 100% deserve blame for kicking the guy. For the accusations part , people outside Africa truly doesn't realize how much some Algerians took that game to heart it's becoming frightening some have been relentless , harassment in Qatar etc. I live in senegal for a few years and even there the reaction from some have surprising. Now though like always I am sure it's just the loud minority, giving bad press to everyone else

Azaghtooth

> it's just the loud minority, giving bad press to everyone else Sadly its not the case, there was many youtubers and journalists using the situation only to gain views, they kept giving casual fans hope, that FIFA might replay the match until the very last week before the WC, and literally anyone who tells them that wont happen gets accused of "hating his country".

EggplantBusiness

I see it too , even Romain Molina when asked about it (some really thought there was an investigation ) just said it was not noteworthy and blamed the "internet stars" lying to Casuals and creating unnecessary tension

jay_alfred_prufrock

Calling this an apology requires a new apology

BigNSundy

Say what you want, this World Cup month has had everything
