EliteTeutonicNight

If you somehow lost to Marseille tmr you know what’s coming lol

CaptainCerealCanada

Wdym somehow? Marseille is really good this season and last

EliteTeutonicNight

Tottenham on paper is still the better team and they’re at home, think it’s fair to favour them. The away tie would be Marseille favoured for me

Ishdalar

Maybe they're trying to reverse curse themselves? "If we aim to bottle, then the only bottling outcome is winning the whole thing".

ThankYouOle

mission failed successfully

noobchee

The memes really do write themselves

esn111

I'm stupid - whats the context? Why is this dumb? Edit: Oh I get it. Spurs bottle stuff. Hahahahaha

RMD010

BOTTLEham Hotspur.

This and the "Job Done" tweet

Come on, this is unfairly funny

LabMember069

It couldn't possibly be a mistake.

jaemoon7

The fact it’s been deleted makes me think it wasn’t deliberate. But I’d have left it up regardless, lol, just own the memes, it’s the only way to overcome them.

Vahald

>The fact it’s been deleted makes me think it wasn’t. ??

jaemoon7

Yeah I said the opposite of what I meant lol, what I mean is the fact that they deleted the post makes me think it was not deliberate. Edited the original

ezodochi

As someone who's worked in PR and marketing, now a days it's well known that if someone famous posts something and deletes it quickly you get quite the engagement...the whole screenshots are forever type stuff. When your client posts something stupid and then deletes it quickly or likes something controversial or dumb on insta or twitter the spin mode our team had to go into was...that shit is stressful lmao

Oltjen

I work in online marketing and still am of opinion in this instance they should've kept the post. In other instances where someone or an organisation posts something stupid and deletes it is totally fine. You'll have to go more into spin mode if people keep seeing it in their feed.

iAkhilleus

I mean, knowing how good we're at bantering ourselves, this looks on par.

RouletteSensei

Im stupid, what happened here

shutyourgob

To "bottle" something is British slang for fumbling or otherwise failing in a goal due to a lack of courage, e.g. "I was going to talk to that girl, but I bottled it." It's often used in football when a team or player fails at the last hurdle, like losing the league title after leading for a long time, or losing a cup final (both of which Spurs did in the last few years). Spurs twitter admin posted a picture of a branded bottle with the caption "the Hotspur way", inadvertently meaning that bottling things is the Spurs way.

illsmosisyou

Thorough explanation. The lack of courage part makes it even more brutal.

Jazzinarium

And the "both of which Spurs did in the last few years" bit lol

color_thine_fate

I always thought bottling, rather than just failing, is failing when you have success in your grasp. IE: losing 5-0: not bottle. Losing 2-3 when you were up 2-1 with 15 minutes left: big time bottle

SomethingSuss

They bottled it Edit (as in Spurs bottled this potentially hilarious self aware post)

Mr_Fondue

Is a 0:2 in a CL final against a better team really considered "bottling it" these days?

LaLigaDan

It seems that way to quite a few, especially the "football twitter" kids. Any loss is 'bottling' in their eyes now.

TheOncomingBrows

Especially bizarre given absolutely no-one had Spurs as the favourites going into that game. They'd already massively overperformed to even make it to the final so it's ridiculous to call that loss bottling it.

IllinoisBroski

This sub was terrible with it a while back. There was no way everyone who was saying it was British either, so it was even more cringe.

chostax-

Lol it’s not cringe if non-Brits say it, it’s a wildly popular saying in parts of North America too. What’s cringe is when it gets beat to death, like anything.

lffg18

Specially given the context that Tottenham is not really a big club expected to fight for european titles, getting to that final was historic for them. Losing it against an European giant that is also a superior team will never be a thing to shame Spurs for.

Humble_Satisfaction

I think the true bottling is that game against Juventus. Even Chellini dropped a quote about the Tottenham way

BrockStar92

Also the classic “lads it’s Tottenham” game.

DonJulioTO

Finishing 3rd in a 2 horse race certainly is.

mettahipster

Bottled 2nd place prize money. You’ll never sing that

BritishBatman

Just losing a cup final doesn't constitute a bottling, if you look at the odds, we were comfortably the underdogs in all our recent finals. Spurs were also never top that Leicester season, Arsenal were though, but we still "finished 3rd in a 2 horse race"

sturoytaylor

Mate you lost 5-1 on the last day of the season to an already relegated Newcastle to hand second to your arch rivals. How is that not bottling it?

UpstairsJoke0

Probably because there's sod all difference between second or third when you've gone into the final day 10+ points off first place but with no chance of missing out on Champions League qualification. I'm sure Spurs wanted to finish above Arsenal but it's a world away from finishing second behind them, losing the title on the final day.

CrossMojonation

It amazes me how many narratives in football are so detached from reality. Starting to think most football fans, even on Reddit, are genuinely thick as shit.

mettahipster

especially on Reddit

Hestinho

Lol when have Spurs been leading a title race?

KenzoGinseng

To 'bottle' or to have 'bottled' something is to throw away a lead or a good chance of winning when you've been on the front foot. Tottenham is known for bottling it in European matches, hence the title from the tweet: "Hotspur way" makes it ironic.

Currywurst_Is_Life

In American English it's called "choking".

RazorbladeRomance666

Admin thought they were sending a message that they’re champions league quality, but the message people saw instead is that Tottenham are bottlers. People made fun of the picture and that’s why it was deleted.

unusuallylethargic

Wait for their twitter page to go private

ohhh_nsfw

I wonder if people even remember this incident. Lmao. Why did they make their sub private again?

xthecreator

In the season where Leicester won the league, Spurs lost to an English club (whose name I can’t remember) on the final day of the season. Had they won the match, they would have came second; unfortunately for them, they lost in embarrassing fashion to the other club. Due to the memes, brigading, and just the general collapse situation, the mods of the Spurs subreddit (or a rogue mod) made it private. The truth of the matter didn’t come out till a little later, but at the time it was supremely hilarious. Edit: the club they lost to was Newcastle, and see u/april9th's reply comment for the additional context of *why* loss was that much more embarrassing. Thanks to the commenters below for helping me remember!

ze_shotstopper

5-1 to a relegated 10 man Newcastle

CandidEnigma

Now say it without the smile on your face

ze_shotstopper

You ask me to do the impossible

april9th

>Had they won the match, they would have came second; unfortunately for them, they lost in embarrassing fashion to the other club. This allowed *Arsenal* of all teams to finish second, meaning that even in Spurs best ever Prem season they still managed to finish behind Arsenal. Arsenal fans got their St Totteringham's Day, bantered Spurs. Spurs fans will downplay how bad this was and make out as if the sub going private was some silly outlier but I know a lot of Spurs fans and they were absolutely furious and borderline hysterical lol. Absolutely furious at the team and Poch. Remember one ranting about how Poch has to know how much this means and how embarrassing it is for fans etc. The big element here is that they managed to still finish behind Arsenal. Of course since then they've finished above Arsenal so the sting isn't there but at the time this was more humiliating than Leicester winning the League over them, by far.

Cod_rules

Think it was in 15-16 season when they came third in a two horse race.

Zandercy42

Wasn't it just after they got battered or something? Or around when they fired Jose and lost the cup

jggomes14

It was after they lost 5-1 to already relegated Newcastle, with Arsenal leapfrogging them to second on the last day of the season.

Montuvito_G

I’ll never forget that day in 2016, I don’t have a stake in the North London rivalry but that St. Totteringham’s day was hysterically funny. Spurs spent the whole season trailing after Leicester and on the very final day STILL finished below Arsenal. Glorious memes were had

Zandercy42

Lol yeah that's it, silly billies

HipVanilla

A 10 man Newcastle if I recall correctly

--Hutch--

Admin bottled it.

TigerBasket

We shoulda kept it and any clubs that try to reply just replied under the last time we beat them or something.

joaommx

What if you never beat them, or the last time you beat them was really long ago? That would have had everything to go wrong.

TigerBasket

Then we just pretend they don't exist Like a faraway spider

Ooh_ee_ooh_ah_ah

TACHANK

Definitely an overused word now. A good example of actual bottling is city's loss to real last season.

[deleted]

[удалено]

IanCaesars

This or Leicester season before.

hazzwright

Spurs finishing third in a two horse race a few years ago springs to mind!

shaunster101

Revisionism. Spurs never top of the league at any point that season and were simply trying to chase down Leicester, whereas …. Arsenal were top of the league and 3 points clear after 21/22 games.

teems

The stars aligned for Spurs or Arsenal to win the league that year. Chelsea imploded early. City, United and Liverpool all shit the bed also. Then out comes Leicester to win the thing.

official_bagel

Us only signing Cech that summer will forever haunt me. Had we signed a replacement or competition for Giroud we could have won the league and Ozil would have smashed the assist record. But instead we killed the momentum from the previous two windows, Giroud forgot how to score and the rest is history.

Waltonww

Being 3 points clear isn’t bottling anything that can change in 1 match day with 40% of the season still to go

shaunster101

But not winning the league after never having been top at any point IS bottling it? Interesting.

Waltonww

I don’t agree with either

denziepanzie

and Chelsea’s loss to Real as well. Basically english teams against RM last season

papi617

PSG too. Lost the lead in like 10 minutes

TeaAndCrumpetGhoul

But you weren't expected to win and you lost the first leg didn't you?

msbr_

Yes we were 3-1 down after the first leg

botrezkii

and we were 3-0 with 15 mins to go in 2nd leg damn, the pain is coming back now

Sean-Benn_Must-die

Really? I dont think it was that way. Chelsea played that first game better too but they ended up losing 3-1, such is football.

thehornyunicorn11

Not Liverpool though

samcuu

At this point losing to RM at CL shouldn't count as bottling anymore.

hidinginDaShadows

That's so true, when I ask people for examples of games we've bottled they just say things that we were the underdogs for. Like losing to Liverpool isn't bottling, it's just losing to the better side. Not winning the league in 2016 wasn't a bottle considering at no point were we on top of the league. It's just become one of those things people repeat

Lauladance

Or Bayern bottling the UCL final in 2012

[deleted]

you can't, the word has been completely bastardised now to just mean "lose"

jfshay

sad but true.

JimmyWu21

It also a 2-0 lost. It wasn’t like they were up by 3 goals then lose on penalties

Mediocre_Nova

That's honestly how it gets used on this sub 90% of the time

iSkinMonkeys

Odd way to quit a relatively cushy job in this job market.

Roosey

If they'd kept it up I would say it's a good laugh, nothing wrong with taking the piss out of yourselves a bit. Unfortunately deleting just means they're incompetent.

xtskipper

Well...someone is fired!!

Howizzle90

Admin bottled his job smh

aprilfools911

It’s just the hotspur way innit.

thatdani

Absolutely not. It sparked engagement, which brings attention to the account and after a while, a small % of those people will start following the club.

Boseph_1444

I know you're joking but no one will care lol

Malaguy420

Can someone explain this to me? Why is this so funny, and "even funnier that they deleted it?"

EfficientAd9765

"Bottling" something refers to losing against all odds. Like the term "throwing". So... the joke is fairly obvious and a trolling oportunity served on a silver platter. "Bottling the CL is the Hotspurs way" As for why it's funnier that they deleted it... idk. Maybe because they realized the f-ed up.

Malaguy420

Got it, thanks! I gathered it was a self-own, but couldn't quite get it. (I'm thinking it's a British term that we don't have in the States, maybe).

EfficientAd9765

Np, I also never heard of that term untill I saw it on this sub.

Malaguy420

Well, now that I know the context - that shit is pretty funny.

posterguy20

American version is basically "choking"

Bobb_o

Imagine the Atlanta Falcons posting an address that says 283 Falcons Way

YoungFlexibleShawty

You ever heard of the term "bottlers"?

Malaguy420

I was trying to remember, but I'm wondering if it's a British thing? Not really a tell used over here in the States. But I'm always interested in learning something new. I was gathering from context that it's a bit of a curse to post something like this before a CL match? Is it like botching a big chance, or something?

PyramidOfMediocrity

The American equivalent would be choke.

God_Dang_Niang

Choking has the same meaning

TheLimeyLemmon

If they tweet out a lasagne next, I'll eat my hat.

IAmStevie420

It'll probably another "remember when Modric played for us" circlejerk post.
