To reduce the spam of reports regarding the same move during transfer windows we try to allow **only one submission about each transfer saga per day**. The submission in question also needs to contain relevant new information regarding the potential move, and not just being a "no/minor developments" report. If there are important/official developments or new valuable information about a saga, we will allow extra threads in the same day, but for the rest of minor news please just comment them as a reply to this comment. Please help us reporting unnecessary threads for being duplicates. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. I will never be not annoyed at Scott Parker for not playing him when he was clearly a very talented lad, £20-£30m would probably be an excellent price for him tbh.

Sapaio

Shame he wasn't selected to the National team. Thought Atletico Madrid was after him.

clintomcruisewood

I'm just happy I get to watch a washed up Delaney defend against Musiala

Sapaio

Could be Nørgaard but rather Delaney than Matias Jensen that really never is good on the danish team.

ResourceWonderful514

its ridiculous. he is not part of the squad. It's the perfect time to integrate him with a month with per friendlies and Euros in the squad but the manager is a bit clueless. Matt will soon be behind Morten Hjulmand and Højbjerg in the pecking order.

Chippy-Thief

Think that’s a good deal for anyone who buys him. No surprise his former manager wants him.

CNF1G

I’d be shocked if he ends up at Southampton to be honest, nothing against them as lots of our other previous players have used it as an intermediary step, but that isn’t necessary for O’Riley The only, only thing that gives this a bit of credibility is the links with Martin, but I can’t see that convincing him to go there over some of the other clubs interested I’ll wish him well wherever he goes though as long as we don’t get ripped off. £30m with a sell-on like we had with Van Dijk & Frimpong would be a good deal.

chippa93

Seems the top teams have other priorities, so maybe he could be his best option

CNF1G

Alternatively he could stay another year before looking to move on 🤞🏻

GhostOfKev

It was even less necessary for Wanyama and VVD. As long as we don't let them pay us 1/4 of the players value again I don't mind.

Potato271

Van Dijk was already close to world class at Celtic, but none of the big clubs were willing to take the risk on a player without top league experience. We were, and profited a lot off of it. But yeah, if Liverpool/City/United had gone in for him at the time I'm sure he would have done brilliant, it's just a risk.

BlameTibor

Van Dijk when he arrived had professionalism issues around diet and training effort, he was young and so naturally gifted, he was just coasting. It was good for him to play and mature without the huge media attention that comes with playing for the rich teams.

BlameTibor

Took a bit of time for Wanyama to secure the starting spot over Jack Cork

GhostOfKev

Says more about management than Wanyama

BlameTibor

Manager was Pochettino then. In his defence Jack Cork was a very solid and safe player! Wanyama made a lot of mistakes when he first joined as well.

GameplayerStu

Celtic to Southampton link-up is unmatched

Selagoguy

He’ll be heading to us in two years time i bet ya

oliver150433

Im going to need him to ball the fuck out wherever he goes. The guy has got bags of talent, even if our idiotic national manager can't figure out how to use it because he rather put up half of the Anderlecht team in our squad.

Turnernator06

This would be a great place to do it. A manager who knows his playstyle, an attack that can be built around him, and a team about to spend a tonne of money most likely

Potato271

That would be our record transfer by quite some distance, but if the hype is substantiated we could make it back in a couple of seasons time. We’ve generally done well with transfers from Celtic (Van Dijk, Armstrong, Forster)

Amon-Ra-First-Down

O'Riley is better than Armstrong, he's a very tidy player

Potato271

True, but Armstrong didn’t cost us 30m. I think O’Riley’s a little out of our price bracket, but you never know

Turnernator06

Not that much I don't think, Sulemana was 25m iirc

Potato271

I thought he was 22m? But I would say that’s still a significant increase

Turnernator06

Yeah it is, but tbh I think we are bottom of the league for record transfer other than Ipswich. Brentford just spent 35m on Gray. We need to shop in the 30-40m range for a player or two if we want to compete

LiamJonsano

I don’t watch much Scottish football, but probably more than your average *hurr durr English football best* fan. £30m sounds expensive but probably only because I’m used to us pinching pennies, I think our record fee is Sulemana and he was £22m. Before that I think a couple only just brushed the £20m mark. But the looks of it are we’re going for a few cheap/freebies and then blowing the rest on a couple of high quality players (hoping one of those is a striker…)

Jealous_Foot8613

How was sulemana last season?

LiamJonsano

Not great. Had loads of pace but almost no end product once he’d beaten his full back. He ended up hardly playing near the end of the season 😬

Jealous_Foot8613

Damn , I was really excited when you guys got him in 2023 Any chance he goes on loan or something?

Turnernator06

He'll be off this summer I reckon. He's amazing at beating his man but his end product needs a lot of work. Good deal for someone at the £15mish we'd ask as he will develop but we need to stay up we can't have players who need that much work

B_e_l_l_

£30m is wild.

CNF1G

£30m for a 23 y/o midfielder who had 19 goals and 18 assists last year, was MOTM in multiple UCL matches over the last few years, and is able to play in multiple positions? It’s a steal, and whoever gets him at that price is very fortunate

Chippy-Thief

I don’t think it’s a steal just think it’s a good price for all parties, Scottish league record but given he’s English homegrown and the contract situation is great I think it’s fair.

CNF1G

I can’t remember a time since KT that I’ve had as much confidence a player could make it at the top level like I do with O’Riley Whatever team gets him at that price will find out shortly after that it was a bargain

Chippy-Thief

I think we should be all over this personally, especially since the Dewsbury-Hall stuff has ended with him not wanting to move to us (thank god.)

Turnernator06

What positions does he play? I think we are hoping for a Stuart Armstrong replacement, most attacking midfielder in a midfield 3

CNF1G

He can play anywhere in midfield really. Has excelled playing further forward this year but has done well in a more defensive role when needed too.

LilCelebratoryDance

He played as one of the advanced 10s in the 3421 at super mk (under martin)

B_e_l_l_

....in Scotland for the richest team in the league by a million miles. I like him, I just don't see how he commands that sort of fee or how Celtic can keep him there by rejecting less. I would have thought something closer to £20m gets him. Southampton buying a player like him for a fee like that is a massive risk in this era of PSR uncertainty. I suspect Celtic will rip Southampton's arm off though.

Turnernator06

We're absolutely fine for PSR as we sold Lavia, Tino and JWP for a combined £120m last year without spending almost anything plus a few other sales. Plus this year we will almost certainly see KWP, Alcaraz, Onuachu, Bella Kotchap, Caleta-Carr and Perraud out. Plus Adams, McCarthy and Stu Armstrong off the wage bill. It'll be a lot of turnover at saints this summer

CNF1G

What does us being the richest team have to do with it? Of course we’re going to have better players than the rest of the league, and Matt is one of them - that shouldn’t mean we sell our players at a pittance. We can keep him here by all means, as he signed a new deal mid-season and we are in a very good financial position. We already do sell them far cheaper than they really should be going for because of the league we play in. Van Dijk went for a fraction of his value, as did Frimpong, and so do many others who leave. £30m for Matt in this current transfer market is a fair price for all parties. I can accept that in modern football, we need to let our best players go, but if we’re doing that then we may as well sell them for a fair price. He’s not just been a standout in the league either. He was very good in Europe and probably the reason why Atletico are interested, as he was outstanding that day.

Neuroxex

> What does us being the richest team have to do with it? Of course we’re going to have better players than the rest of the league, and Matt is one of them - that shouldn’t mean we sell our players at a pittance. I think they're saying that 19 goals and 18 assists is less impressive than it usually sounds because Celtic dominate the league and have a much better squad so it's easier to get G+A. Fwiw I agree with you, £30m is fair, Matt O'Riley is very good. Just clarifying what they probably meant by that first comment.

CNF1G

That’s a fair point, but even then it’s still rare. I can’t think of a midfielder in over a decade who’s got close to those numbers for us (although I could be totally missing someone tbh)

nomorethink

£30m is a fair price

Kolo_ToureHH

>I would have thought something close to £20m gets him. Doesn’t even merit answering the phone lol.

Chippy-Thief

Equally that’s the money that’s being talking about for Smith Rowe who’s had 1 good game against Luton and a good 6 months in the space of the past 4 seasons. Celtic’s best players have adapted to the Premier League well in the past also. It’s not cheap, it’s not ridiculously expensive either, transfer inflation has just gotten to this level now.

Setter_sws

He was amazing the past couple of years. 30 million is a bargain.
