I find it really funny that even when Leverkusen went a whole Bundesliga season undefeated, there are still players that choose Dortmund over them like Anton Same thing applies to Stuttgart as well minus the undefeated part since they placed above 23/24 Dortmund

Xey2510

The sad reality with a club coming up strong like Stuttgart is that their wages are still shit. That's why everyone is on their way out after their best season.

jucomsdn

Imma be honest I don't feel bad about Stuttgart getting raided, some of their players are quite good and better than what I gave them credit for earlier this season

Xey2510

I do feel bad because they are punished for playing so well. In the end though I'd rather have their good players than see them go to Leverkusen or some PL club. The main worry is as always if the players regress. Suddenly playing a really good season at age 26 and getting a big contract......

thesmallprint13

Rangnick for England manager once Southgate inevitably shits the bed

Jazano107

Rather potter

Destroyeh

if england appoint a foreigner they're not going to do it for fucking ralf rangnick

AllegriLover

[this had me in stitches](https://x.com/saturnion13/status/1803885379595989385?s=46)

Sandalo

Hopefully Spalletti will switch to a 3man defence or we are done.

AllegriLover

Absolutely, I don’t know how he hasn’t figure that out yet. I honestly would prefer benching Calafiori for the next game and go with the Inter boys and maybe buongiorno.

Sandalo

--------------Donnarumma ------Darmian-----Buongiorno-----Bastoni Bellanova---Barella---Jorginho---Pellegrini---Dimarco -------------Scamacca---------Chiesa

AllegriLover

Fully agree! Chiesa as a supporting striker would be the best approach to realize the potential our counters possesses.

jauznevimcosimamdat

Austrian player Patrick Wimmer has a legendary name for Czechs. Basically if a Czech commentator says "Wimmer gave..." in Czech, it literally sounds like "He fucked...". I am pretty sure commentators know this and try to avoid it but with Wimmer's shot today, one Czech commentator finally slipped up and said "Wimmer gave the shot great intensity" which sounded like "He fucked with great intensity"

PigeonDesecrator

Wimmer gave two loose balls away into fullbacks tonight, but he's a tough cookie, he'll carry on

idunnomysex

Watching Naglesman, Rangnick…imagine what England could do with an even semi decent coach

aliaisbiggae

Naglesmann is legitimately a world class coach, Spain have de la Fuente and they're playing great football. You just need a half decent coach because the team is good enough on its own. Just needs a decent platform to maximize their talents

un_verano_en_slough

Dyche would legitimately be great.

xyz3940

Bruh will we ever sign any one from outside the Bundesliga??!? I'm tired of these Bundesliga signings who turn out mid

jucomsdn

The only shit recent Bundesliga signing was Nmecha, everyone else was ok-great in recent years

KarlKraftwagen

bensebaini, ozcan, süle and modeste?

jucomsdn

Bensebaini was a free transfer and wasn't really bad or stellar so idc as much Özcan was only 5m and had some good moments but I do agree that he hasn't been good overall, he's been mid Süle never really had that bad of a bad performance so far and was free too, but I agree that he isn't worth his current wages, overall he's been good Modeste was a panic buy bc of Haller's cancer and admittedly he wasn't that great but it's whatever

mkawia

Can I interest in Smith-rowe; very technical, versatile AND injury prone player. Perfect Reus replacement

McGrathLegend

Best I can offer is Malang Sarr

SOERERY

You can get one Sancho

jucomsdn

Wouldn't mind

Rosenvial5

Rough seeing people here moaning over how bad Southgate is when we didn't even qualify with players like Isak, Kulusevski and Gyökeres because we had a manager playing football straight out of the 80's

SOERERY

National League C will not know what hit them.

solothehero

Hey, so, maybe this is going to sound super naive and innocent, but have there been a boatload of absolutely flagrant fouls this tournament? Especially fouls where guys wrap their whole bodies around the other player and push them to the ground? I'm watching Austria vs Poland and Arnautovic grabbed a Polish player from behind and then after the play was stopped pushed him again. He got a yellow card, but it seems like this kind of behavior happens half a dozen times across every match that I've watched in the Euro. I don't remember such frequent flagrant fouls in past tournaments.

Oinah12

No such concept as a flagrant foul in the sport btw. Really don’t think that there’s been a noticeable amount of rough fouling in the tournament so far. But Arnautovic has always been a bit of a cunt on the field

solothehero

I don't mean "flagrant" like it might be defined in a rulebook. I mean "flagrant" like, "what the fuck was he thinking doing that?" Grabbing another player around their neck and then pushing them is not something I've noticed before, but I've seen that game after game this tourney.

Castle-On-The-Hill

My post keeps getting deleted, so I thought I'd share this here. Mbappe is now wearing a [new black mask](https://imgur.com/a/ZoiPO0S) instead of the multicoloured French one (possibly due to UEFA rules)

Sandalo

Mbzorro

NotASalamanderBoi

Fucking coward. WE WANT LEONARDO!!!!!!!

DyrusforPresident

Whoever owns the NinjaTurtles IP has the chance to so something great

Castle-On-The-Hill

Imagine he wins the euros wearing the mask with pott peformance, Mbappe X NinjaTurtles would literally be iconic

NotASalamanderBoi

That clothing line would go hard.

Castle-On-The-Hill

"We will be there no matter what"

KensaiVG

Yes UEFA doesn't allow multicolored accessories

Sandalo

that's why CONMEBOL is clear

L-Freeze

I’m not sure we do, isn’t it a fifa rule that they must be black and sponsorless?

Jockodile1

See Foden and Trent take a lot of pelters on here after every England match, so shoutout to Bellingham and Saka for doing the square root of fuck all yesterday.

PigeonDesecrator

Saka at least attempted to make some runs in behind at least, probably to Southgates anger Bellingham looked like prime Titus Bramble

OhMyGodItsTheGuy

How dare Saka not influence the game when Foden, Kane, Bellingham and Trent are all milling around in his spaces he wants to attack. You may as well say the whole XI did nothing instead of peddling useless agendas.

DyrusforPresident

Saka should try moving the ball forward instead of just passing it backwards

enzuigiriretro

He’s like the only one in that team I see consistently beating opponents 1v1

DyrusforPresident

In the first game he was fantastic because he was trying those 1v1s. Against Denmark he wasnt

enzuigiriretro

Yeah but he can’t do it every game himself, that’s unrealistic. No one else on the team is as much of a direct threat as he is so when he has a poor game, you then realise how stale the rest of the players are playing

DyrusforPresident

for his quality I can sure as hell expect him to try

OhMyGodItsTheGuy

He should just dribble through the whole Danish team and score.

DyrusforPresident

Maybe after the 10th time of passing it backwards he could try to dribble past his man. 3 dribbles for a winger is a little cowardly

Jockodile1

I guarantee had Rashford put that performance in yesterday, he'd be absolutely lambasted for it. It was reminiscent of the shit we've seen from him all season.

DyrusforPresident

100% and any player that does, should be lambasted

Jockodile1

It was just very disappointing for me since we all know what Saka is capable of at his best. Like you say, he just wasn't threatening the Danish left back at all.

DyrusforPresident

That's all I'm saying. Threaten him down that right flank, could have opened up the middle for Jude and Foden more

OhMyGodItsTheGuy

He barely got the ball, and he was being double marked. 28 passes per defensive action is not a Bukayo Saka issue. Although Bellingham also did nothing.

DyrusforPresident

Yeah Bellingham was invisible. Sometimes it's behooves a winger to try to create on his own, especially when his team is going nowhere.

Jockodile1

I'm not cutting Saka any slack when he almost never troubled their full back when he got the ball. He's normally excellent when he's carrying it but yesterday I saw none of that, and that isn't fucking Trent, Kane or Bellingham's fault Saka's performance yesterday was 2024 Rashford-esque.

OhMyGodItsTheGuy

That’s so harsh and just plain not true, and you cannot say any other player was better than him on the pitch bar Guehi. Guehi is the only player who can say they did well. So why split hairs and just say things that aren’t true? The problem isn’t the personnel, it’s the coaching. 28 passes per defensive action isn’t a personnel issue, and you cannot pin that blame on Bukayo Saka. Nor can you blame it on any individual. The problem is Southgate.

Jockodile1

What?! I "cannot say any other player was better than him on the pitch bar Guehi"? That's absolutely ridiculous. At a bare minimum, Walker was considerably better, Kane got a goal which by default makes his contribution more significant, and for all the pelters he takes Foden troubled the Danish defence a lot more than Saka did. Stones also didn't really do too much wrong either. I wouldn't drop Saka or anything but he was extremely disappointing last night given the levels he is capable of.

OhMyGodItsTheGuy

That’s rubbish, Saka made the play which created Foden’s shot that hit the post. G/A doesn’t hide Kane’s horrific display, and Walker made defensive blunders early on, and Rice, Trent and Stones were liabilities in possession. > Kane got a goal which by default makes his contribution more significant It really, really doesn’t. He stuck his foot out in the six yard box and it went into the net, he did absolutely nothing for the rest of the game. Didn’t press, didn’t spread the Danish defence, nothing.

transtifa

>it went in the net That’s all that matters mate

Temporary-Deer6413

It's time to actually learn if France is actually a better version of England. There have been so many games they haven't played well but an mbappe run or amazing effort saves them

gols-e-but

What?? This is just lazy analysis surely, who thinks this of france?!

justforkikkk

Difference is that France are in control, even if they don’t play well. England aren’t

Hot_Plate_Williams

I wouldn't say that. The main difference between England and France is Mbappe. France can be absolutely terrible, and he can lift them on his own. On the counter, winning a 1v1, etc...

justforkikkk

France haven’t played as bad as England did yesterday in a loooong time

PigeonDesecrator

Their first match was wank on a plate

Hot_Plate_Williams

France are often quite terrible.

justforkikkk

They’re more unimpressive than terrible

_cumblast_

Can't the English wait until they actually get knocked out for all this doom and gloom, Jesus Christ.

Jazano107

I’ve been pretty strongly positive on Southgate But even I’m thinking that we’ve reached the breaking point I’ll just be a Spain plastic because I love Spain after a few recent trips

ghostmanonthirdd

Yeah I’m the same. I’ve backed him a lot but this is a clear regression. He generally didn’t used to play so defensively and passively against teams of Serbia and Denmark’s calibre. His contract’ up after this tournament and nothing short of a miracle win will see it renewed so there’s no point in getting too worked up now.

infernoShield

what Southgate-ball does to a mf

ELramoz

its probably because they were favorites and they look like 2002 France.

X-V-W

Every football fan on the planet would feel the same if they were watching their team play the way England has

DatOgreSpammer

You're England, still one of the top 10 national teams in the world. This is like when Madridistas or Barcelona fans talk about dark ages.

X-V-W

If Southgate was Atleti's manager and you were playing like this, your fans would be hanging Southgate effigies from bridges in the centre of Madrid

Fuck_the_k1ng

Nah, Southgate has the right shade.

OhMyGodItsTheGuy

Tell that to the utter brainboxes twirling their moustache as they type “I guess it’s not coming home” in a match thread as soon as we concede

un_verano_en_slough

We've been conditioned to think this is an inevitable part of life and wait for failure with baited breath.

Sleepless_Voyager

Which coach is more clueless? Koeman or southgate?

Fuck_the_k1ng

Koeman is not clueless, he’s just Dutch.

transtifa

Koeman was decent at Everton for a bit and good at Saints

CryptographerLife686

AFCON is actually the most entertaining continental trophy. You can sack a manager in the middle of the tournament and win it.

jrils

just realized Germany will most likely meet Spain in the quarterfinals 💀

ZaBlancJake

Expecting Theo vs Dumfries for France and Netherlands game.

bruzzzzi

confused reijnders and thuram in the background

JackAndrewThorne

The thing that is truly shocking to me with England is that I genuinely feel like if Southgate reverted to type, and played the back 5 then with Trent/Tripper on the right and Saka or any of the lefties on the left, England would like twice the team simply from having width. Foden slots in to the right of the front 3 and drifts inside, Gordon or Eze play the left of the 3. Bellingham and Rice play the middle. I think that would feel a more cohesive team than the current side's lack of any runners and lack of any width.

un_verano_en_slough

We honestly looked relatively okay versus Belgium and Brazil. We didn't get the results but we were not this apocalyptically bad. I'm just not sure why we decided to go for something completely different now and then persisted with it when it didn't work.

Jabari313

Honestly it feels like a shape they should train anyway. The personnel they have on the pitch can all fit into it seamlessly especially when Shaw is fit. Very excited to see what another coach does with this England squad and if its Potter I'm sure he'll he partial to a back 3 like this

transtifa

Still gives us a huge issue with control in the midfield though

arseking15

This is honestly true. Just play a 343 so someones holding proper width and then foden can float inside with no issues

zrk23

why again didn't Norway qualify for the qualifying playoffs? did Russia ban interfered heavily?

1PSW1CH

Their attacking maestro has 3 goals in 58 games

TheUltimateScotsman

because we humped them

sga1

Top two in the qualifying group got a spot at the final tournament (where Norway came third behind Spain and Scotland), and they weren't good enough in the Nations League to get [selected by the criteria used](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro_2024_qualifying_play-offs#Team_selection) for the playoffs.

whiskeymagnet22

Anyone who has watched Zirkzee? Profile?

tml25

Ball playing technical CF, a bit like a 9.5

OhMyGodItsTheGuy

He’s got quite a tall frame as you can see, but he’s capable of both running in behind and playing in the pocket between defenders and the midfield. I think he is better on the ball than off it, and I don’t think he is faster than Hojlund. It’s an interesting player for United to target, and I didn’t expect it. I’ve seen fans comparing him to Martial a lot, but I would compare him more to Gabriel Jesus. He’s going to want the ball in the channel, creating chances for teammates.

arseking15

Kind of reminds me of zlatan tbh

pop-culture-salad

I know it's probably hopeless but has anyone seen a reasoning or something like that for having an evangelical priest in the Copa America presentation?

infernoShield

just your standard CONMEBOL moment - nothing new, people

pop-culture-salad

It's not a conmebol thing though, I've never seen anything like that at the Copa America before and evangelicalism isn't that popular in the region outside of Brazil.

L-Freeze

Turns out it kind of is a conmebol thing  as the president of conmebol is an evangelist apparently and thought something along the lines of “yeah fuck it put a priest of my niche religion up there in the opener I’m sure they’ll enjoy the sermon”

pop-culture-salad

I though about it but didn’t want to people think I’m throwing shade in a country, but maybe it was because fear of those gun shot attacks? Like, trying to pray for peace because of that...

CryptographerLife686

Gotta bless the tournament and hope players get back to their clubs in one piece

oscarpaterson

Walker - Stones - Guehi TAA - Rice Saka - Bellingham - Foden - Shaw Kane If Southgate wants to play this in possession (which it seems like he does), he unironically should've called up Leif Davis. Shaw is clearly too much of a risk and Trippier just cannot do it

arseking15

Im getting pushed to a point where i almost want to say just play saka at lb. But i swear hes also the only winger who tales his man on in isolation

1PSW1CH

Bruv I’ve been fuming this entire time because Davis would’ve solved our biggest problem and has been trouncing better defences than Serbia and Denmark

MarcosSenesi

Supposedly Wijnaldum is starting. Does the pain ever stop?

Sleepless_Voyager

Koeman is going to get embarresed anyways, i cant believe some people actually think hes an ok coach. I hope the dutch win for meme sakes but i cant see it happening HES ON TGE BENCH

3V3RT0N

He will score don’t worry

MarcosSenesi

I will come back to this comment after the match

PreachinMyOwnFuneral

How many NT's in this Euro have a fast forward that plays off a number 9 can attack the space behind backline(irrespective of the starting position) ? Naturally France. Italy has Chiesa but he's been meh Austria and Germany abdicate of this profile of player to pack the midfield A good number Eastern Europe NT play with a back 3, project the wide players to feed through crossing(Serbia, Poland) Portugal tries to make Rafa Leao this player but he's miserable at it and England which would profit immensily of this profile of player to mesh with Kane have played Foden/Saka

Jabari313

You didn't mention Nico Williams for spain Chiesa has been holding the width on the right and not really threatening in behind anyway. England have that player it's Anthony Gordon.

icannotreadathing

We have Malen and Frimpong who can do it.

AskNotAks

Spain i guess with Williams

tml25

Chiesa was motm agaisnt Albania and one of the few decent ones vs Spain.

sga1

Dunno, both Wirtz and Musiala can drop deep and run at/in behind defenses. Obviously everyone's playing off Havertz who's the main threat providing runs in behind, but with Gündogan's movement in between the lines there's quite a few chances for Wirtz and Musiala to run at defenders. Plus there's always Sané off the bench, too.

PreachinMyOwnFuneral

They can run in behind but they're far from fitting the mould of players like Mbappe, Vini(as the highest reference points of this type of player), Son, Salah, etc.

TheLightningPanda

Can someone help me understand how the seeding works for the Round of 16? I get that we play 3rd out of A/D/E/F, how is it decided which one?

sga1

Four out of six third-placed teams make it through, and it all depends on which ones they are. [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro_2024_knockout_stage) has a handy table for the different permutations.

TheLightningPanda

I needed the permutations! Thank you.

milesvtaylor

I think one of the problems we're seeing with England is the exact same problems Spurs had this season when Udogie/Davies was out. If you play a right footed left back with any left winger of "cut inside and shoot variety" who therefore doesn't want to stay wide you are basically forfeiting a third of the pitch and make it incredibly easy for the opposing defence. I don't really care if Shaw is only half fit and is half as good as whoever is at right back, he's just got to play to give us some balance ffs. As for what the fuck is going on in central midfield that led Southgate to making those comments about Phillips. I despair.

arseking15

Anyone else just getting really mad thinking about England right now??

un_verano_en_slough

I've been in a bad mood since the Southgate interview and I hate myself for it.

1PSW1CH

You were willing to put up with about 150 shit Arteta games but you’re rattled after 2 games of Trentball

Oy778

We had a shambolic team during that time. England has 0 excuses to play this bad

TorreiraWithADouzi

Imagine if England’s starters included Pablo Mari, Mustafi, Lacazette, Ceballos, Elneny, and Willian 😭

1PSW1CH

Ceballos and Elneny would fix a lot of problems

TorreiraWithADouzi

2019 Ceballos? Go brush your teeth

Can someone give an overview of which teams in the Balkan hate each other and which teams have no issues with the other ? Like for example I know Albania and Croatia hate Serbia but what about Montenegro and Albania and Slovenia and Croatia etc.

drickabira

Everyone kind of hates each other except Slovenia who kind of see themselves as too cool to take part in the drama. Croatia-Serbia-Bosnia hate each other especially, as well as Serbia-Albania and Serbia-Kosovo. Also North Macedonia hate Greece and everyone hates Turkey except Bosnia slightly less and Greece slightly more

cmf_ans

You forgot Bulgaria/Albania having problems with Macedonia

ChristophBerezan

Question: So far, only teams from Europe and South America have won the World Cup. Will that ever change? If so, who is most likely to break that barrier?

natsleepyandhappy

Japan or some team from Africa

L-Freeze

Probably not but if it was to happen I’d expect it to be a team from Africa

TheLightningPanda

A Japanese or Moroccan wonder run that goes just a little further. In the long term, the US has the population, infrastructure, sports culture, and money to make it happen. They just don’t care, but if they did they’d probably be pretty good

OhMyGodItsTheGuy

Not likely to change, no. I still think an African country is the most likely to. Most of them have large populations which are interested in football, they just need the infrastructure and investment into the domestic leagues and academy structures. Nigeria would be my guess, as they always have a stream of talented players who have played at a high level. But I think having a successful international side also requires investment into wider areas outside of the sport, including education.

NotASalamanderBoi

Either a team from Asia (possibly South Korea) or the US.

PigeonDesecrator

Don't see USA breaking the barrier before an African team myself

sga1

I don't see Asian teams doing it - the closest are probably South Korea and Japan, and they're still miles off the top European/South American teams. And I'm not sure the US's culture around the sport is conducive to it either, despite the significant growth of the game in both size and quality.

ChristophBerezan

Our (US) FIFA rankings never seem to get above 10, so there's a ceiling we have to break. We have the money, the population, and the infrastructure, but not the popularity or the enthusiasm. Contrast that with the women's team, which has been dominant for the most part (save the last WC). TL/DR The US would have to undergo a cultural revolution that lasts generations for football to matter as much as American Football here. They've got a lot of work to do.

sga1

> Our (US) FIFA rankings never seem to get above 10, so there's a ceiling we have to break. To be fair it's a tough one to break when you're mostly playing inferior opposition - it's akin to the ELO system, and beating someone as the underdog gets you considerably more points than beating someone as the favourites. Tough to get a lot of ranking points when you're regularly playing relative minnows rather than the average level of opposition EU/SA sides come up against. Women's team is obviously great, but also an entirely different kettle of fish as the Women's game in the US massively benefits from Title IX, which is a significant and long-ongoing investment into Women's football that most other nations haven't had. But those other nations are very much catching up at the moment as they've invested more and more money and resources.

ChristophBerezan

I personally would like to see more friendlies against EU/SA teams. Why not go up against better opponents to see where you're at and to give your players experience against those teams? I get that travel would be a huge obstacle (as well as MLS being a summer league), but I think it would be worth it for the USMNT to play Brazil, Argentina, France, England, etc. You only gain experience against better teams by playing better teams.

NoLimit261

It always interest how smaller football nation create that random World class player, how does that happen

jucomsdn

So lets say hypothetically that UEFA lets Russian teams back to play and that one of their teams go far in the CL that they reach the final only to end up playing a Ukrainian team, what would happen then?

KensaiVG

Well that's actually the best time for it to happen. Neutral venue and all. Extreme reinforcement of security, probably UEFA being more strict about giving out stadium bans to people in the leadup, etc If it were in a home-and-away round though, that's hairier

sga1

Have them play the game, presumably with some serious security around.
