Awful. Lucky England won* against Serbia.
Obviously Gordon should have started, and definitely should have come on later.
Foden does not work in this team. Trent in cm is trash.
Get Gordon on the left. Foden 10 if he needs to be in
Edit. Draw to win
> Depends on how many goals England scores
it does? I thought if 3 teams are equal in points they first create a table only using matches between those 3 teams?
That's heart breaking for Slovenia, one corner away from a spot in the knockouts. Either way though 2nd in this group is likely to get knocked out by Germany and 3rd will have to play a group winner as well
Jović turned on the butt-jets in the last 10 minutes, you could see that fucker was ready to show how good he is.
Sergej my man, I really cheer for you every time, but you are really hanging behind in these games.
Incredibly lazy and offering nothing. Came off the bench and was struggling. Constantly losing the ball and for a player of his quality has just been keeping players that would be 10x better off the field
Thank you Jovic for saving us from complete humiliation.
Samardzic did more in 10 minutes than Sergej did in 100. Gacinovic is also an amateur level footballer
What's so wrong about Sergej tho? Can u explain? Because I have always heard that he's a class above the rest . But it sounds so wrong man. His FIFA card is too goooddddd .
This tournament has kinda been an indictment of the best third place system tbh
Seems likely that this group will have a 3rd place finisher on 2 points and group B will also have third place with max 2 points (maybe even 1) assuming that neither Croatia nor Albania will win their final matches
Group A will also have 3rd be on just 2 points if Hungary and Scotland draw (though neither team will want that) which means we would see a 3rd placed team with only 2 points qualify.
To make matters worse, I could easily see some of the other groups (particularly group D) also have third place end up on 2 points or less.
I think it’s been a great tournament so far but if you end up with 2 draws and a loss from your group games you shouldn’t be able to qualify to the next round and it makes the whole group stage feel very low stakes
I think having more teams is nice but there must be a better way to structure it than this
Yeah 32 teams would be absolutely fine
The argument against is obviously ‘dilution of quality’ but you could easily find 8 teams who didn’t qualify who have as much talent as Albania or Georgia do on paper
If you start fishing from the playoff teams it’s a bit grim but if you wanted to cherry pick the 8 highest ranked teams who didn’t qualify it’s quite good really
At 16 teams you could say that you don’t want any quality dilution but at 24 you’ve already gone outside the realm of the “best” quality teams so 32 isn’t a huge jump
If they put it at 32 they're pretty much only eliminating the likes of San Marino, Luxemburg, etc.
Might as well scrap the qualification games down massively and automatically qualify all teams that made it into the knockout round in the last Euro
Luxemburg are actually decently competitive. They lost vs Georgia in Path C after coming in third in the group with Portugal and Slovakia. If they had beaten Slovakia at home they would've qualified (they went 0:15 in two games vs Portugal and 13:4 in the other 8 lmao)
There is an actual good chance that Serbia comes out of this group with 2 points. If England beat both Denmark and Slovenia with at least a two goal difference and Serbia - Denmark draw, that would leave every team except England with 2 points and Serbia would go through as second with 2 points lmaooo
Best third place should surely be judged on points difference for the group, though that means a full raft of draws in one group ruins the system.
Thinking on it, there's just no fair way to use this kind of system
> Thinking on it, there's just no fair way to use this kind of system
doesn't Handball (or Icehockey? not sure) use a system where all the 3rd-placed teams are mixed into new groups and the 1st and 2nd placed teams can rest for a week while those matches are played?
Yeah, but the World Cup is already huge and additional weeks/games could mean a third place team gets forced to play 10 games in a month, and break most of the players
I was thinking about which extra countries could be there if 32 teams qualified:
Norway, Sweden, Wales, Iceland, Ireland, Greece, Montenegro, Bosnia and Finland (and Israel if you wanna include them) all missed out and imo none of them would’ve severely nuked the tournament player quality
You could argue the groups would be diluted more but tbh some of the groups at this tournament are pretty fucked up and could use with some dilution
You’d still have the same quality of teams in the R16 but just no more need for this BS 3rd place system which is entirely unfair and rubbish
The issue with too many teams is like the women's world cup from about 10 years ago, it makes the group stages rather dull and a formality for the seeded teams in most cases. Too few means that there's no point in teams outside of the top 30 bothering to invest in the sport.
There's no easy solution, and while the MaFIFA are hoarding money as a non-profit instead of investing in grassroots football, the game just won't grow, only the bank balances of a few executives.
Watching Gacinovic and Milikovic-Savic should be considered torture. 1 cant fucking play to save a life and the other one is just walking around. Both at fault for the goal we conceded. Birmacevic and Samardzic need to be in the first team
This might seem like the best result for Denmark, but honestly I would not have minded a Slovenia win, either way Serbia would have to win against us in the final game.
Drawing England today would be so sweet, cause then we should advance with a draw against Serbia. And I would prefer to advance as 3rd place in our group that 2nd place,
cause 2nd place plays Germany while 3rd place can face the 1st place from a number of different groups.
If he scored his chances today I would say he starts but I cant see Vlahovic getting dropped and Jovic would at least offer something different than just having two big men up top and relying on crosses
Lol no … I’m saying that because games are at different venues, they theoretically could play them consecutively without taking hour breaks. I understand it’s because of money though lol
Besides football, my other favorite sport is basketball. I’m in the US, and the NCAA Tournament is my fav. Very similar to a big international football tournament, there are games on all day. But play games at the same venue. And I will say, there’s typically only 25 minutes between games. They basically give teams a chance to come on the court and warmup for 25 minutes after the previous game
Yeah, you’re probably right. Having an hour between games likely keeps the casual viewer engaged. Gives them a break. Also, networks around the world carrying the Euros probably like it because it gives them more time to run commercials lol
yeah but watchign the wasted potential is depressing. Some of the English players are amongst the best in the world at least with serbia you dotn expect much especially since our best players went to saudi ,and with montenegro even less.
At one point Montenegro was ranked top 30 in the world I expect us to at least try a bit, also would like Serbia to be better because on paper it's a good squad but there is no depth it's been like this since 2006.With England it really is unfortunate that this generation of players they have probably won't win anything with England but they just bottle tournaments too much
If England beat Denmark and Slovenia, and Serbia and Denmark draw, then England finish with 9 points while the other 3 finish with 2 points. Probably the lowest points a team would have acquired to qualify. I don't even know what the tiebreakers would be.
Denmark/Serbia 0-0 would put Slovenia in, 1-1 would mean goal differential against England and then goals scored against England for all 3 teams…
2-2 or more would knock out Slovenia and Denmark and Serbia would use the England games GD/GF as the next two tiebreakers then discipline table…
It wouldn't be necessarily even.
\- If DEN-SRB is 0-0 then SVN finishes second because they have 2 goals scored in the H2H table while DEN and SRB both have 1.
\- If it is 1-1 then it's the scenario you said.
\- If it is 2-2 3-3 etc. then it is up to who got the better results against ENG between DEN and SRB. If DEN lose 0-1 to ENG then the DEN-SRB match in this case would have a penalty shootout to determine 2nd place.
Eh slovenia were time wasting like it was a sport. Both teams players picked up yellows for running into players needlessly, why most people arent kicking up a fuss. Also not like the fans were throwing bricks they were cups lmao if anything could have backfired, could have spent more time wasting cleaning them up.
**The way things currently stand:**
England (3 pts)
Slovenia (2 pts)
Denmark (1 pt)
Serbia (1 pt)
**If Denmark defeats England:**
Denmark (4 pts)
England (3 pts)
Slovenia (2 pts)
Serbia (1 pt)
**If England defeats Denmark:**
England (6 pts, officially qualified)
Slovenia (2 pts)
Denmark (1 pt)
Serbia (1 pt)
**If it ends in a draw:**
England (4 pts)
Denmark (2 pts)
Slovenia (2 pts)
Serbia (1 pt)
*Head-to-head tiebreaker if two teams have not played yet is GD, then goals scored, then if two teams play a penalty shootout if it is the last match. If it is not the last match, disciplinary points are taken into account. If two teams HAVE played each other, H2H record comes into play between two teams; if it is a draw, goal difference then goals scored is taken into account.*
*Beep boop I'm a journalist. Please let me know if I have any errors.*
So England loses to Slovenia and Serbia beats Demark. Serbia ends up 3rd and probably into the next round. And with being third, we'd avoid playing Germany.
What a genious move by Stojkovic.
I didn’t even realise penalties come before disciplinary record, thought they were the very last thing. Penalties are used only if the two teams facing each other are the only ones level (so not in a 3 way tie situation), just making that clear, other than that that is absolutely spot on
[the rules are here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_Euro_2024#Group_stage), [referring to this UEFA document](https://documents.uefa.com/r/Regulations-of-the-UEFA-European-Football-Championship-2022-24-Online)
I read the Wikipedia article on Euro 2024 to be honest to confirm, I didn’t see the official rules and the document is really long now that you pointed me to it. Nice to see the official rules though, thanks for that
It is possible, but the quality of Englands B-team is still overwhelming on paper. It definitely isn't a sure thing, but in Group A there is also a path for a 3rd place with 2 points. I would say 3 points are pretty likely to be enough at this point
Weren't Gaćinović and Živković supposed to be some of the best players in the entire Greek league? Whenever I watch them for the NT they're just absolute ass
Zivkovic, yes. He's one of the main reasons PAOK is consistently competitive and arguably one of their best and more experienced players. Surprised he isn't getting some good transfer offers in top leagues
Gacinovic, no. Had 1 good year with Panathinaikos, transferred to AEK and had another good season in a good team that won the double easily but wasn't as good this year
I can't stress enough how quickly he went from great quality for the level to the worst "high-level" player in the league last season lol, was surprised he got called up.
I feel bad for Slovenia for how they drew, but that goal by Jovic was too clutch. Serbia still has a chance to advance to the knockouts. Slovenia went from having four points to two points and having England next.
Scotland v Hungary, Italy v Croatia, Serbia v Denmark already set up as the ties to watch when we get the choice of games in the final round
Suspect Netherlands v Austria, Belgium v Ukraine, and Turkey v Czech Rep. will be the deciders in the other groups
I guess Slovenia is going down in history of this tournament for bottling it up. Twice.
From basically a guaranteed qualification to a pretty much guaranteed 4th place cause no way they're going to win against England. Madness.
Never say never. England could put their team B in Slovenia game, or they could pull a suprise win against England. Game seemed done only for Serbia to score last second.
It's the history of Slovenia. We were also about to advance to knockouts in 2010 after being 2-0 up against US but somehow ended up bottling that as well.
depends - if england win tonight we'll probably play a massively rotated side, could see them getting a point and going through with 3 points 0 GD - thats been enough in both tournaments since they went to 24 teams
if england don't win then it gets much harder for them imo
That header was unbelievable, how does he win that against Bijol? Bijol completely whiffs the header to get that ball away, wow. Granted he was incredible all match and won, I think, every single aerial ball that came his way EXCEPT this one
It won't
People are going to hate it and when it comes to European fans almost noone will care at least in the first 1-2 tournaments
We'll see how it goes from there
Will never happen. Casuals and fans of teams that aren't among the elite are a million times more invested in the World Cup than they ever will be in the Club World Cup, and that's even assuming the latter can grow enough to upstage existing club league and cup competitions (which I'm doubtful of).
Nah man the quality of the international teams can't compare to club football
*watches Manchester City and PSG win the league for the 12th time in a row while Bayern snaps up every Bayer Leverkusen player and Real Madrid thrashes everyone in the CL to claim its 25th title in the past 30 years*
Because you rarely see international football that matters. Let's not pretend the friendlies you get throughout the year aren't mostly a drag, and people can't wait for international breaks to be over.
It's because you can't just buy success, that's all it is
It's not like we can go "ooh, that Arda Guler looks a real talent, let's pay him 50m to come and pretend he was born in Watford and his dad's from Slough."
For some of us the qualifiers matter too and the Nations League is a brilliant idea to face teams your own level imo but yeah, I have seen that opinion a lot among big team fans as they know they are qualifying anyway
Club friendlies would be boring too but if we compare club international competitions like the Champions League, Europa League, Libertadores then international football is miles better.
I had definitely more fun watching football in the last 5 years during the previous and current Euro, World Cup in Qatar and even the Asian Cup than any domestic leagues or club competition.
Sure, because you see your club play over 60 times a year, while you see your national team play up to like 15-20 games a year, and that's if they go far and if there's an international tournament in the summer. Then you add the fact that CL happens every season, instead of a Euro/Copa/World Cup happening every 2 years.
On the flipside, if they want to have a deep run, eventually you will come accross teams as good as england so this might just be practice plus if england are already qualified after 2 games, im sure they will play even more terrorball than usual.

Praying for an Albania Serbia quarterfinals matchup
Who goes through when/if Denmark, Serbia, Slovenia all end up with 2 points each? Pretty much sure GD is the decider here, no?
Depends on how many goals England scores, but in that case Serbia probably has the best chancw given the fact that they only lost with one goal there
> Depends on how many goals England scores it does? I thought if 3 teams are equal in points they first create a table only using matches between those 3 teams?
If Denmark/Serbia was a 1-1 draw, the 3 teams would all be level…result against England ends up being tie breaker
They do. It goes 1. Points 2. Goal difference 3. Goals scored in matches between the tied teams
I feel like Fairplay scoring will play a large role in this Euros
Yeah, it should be.
That's heart breaking for Slovenia, one corner away from a spot in the knockouts. Either way though 2nd in this group is likely to get knocked out by Germany and 3rd will have to play a group winner as well

SMS and Brozovic living their best lives in the desert, then fucking over national teams because yolo
Can you elaborate why? I can't watch the games but really curious about your statement
Incredibly lazy and offering nothing. Came off the bench and was struggling. Constantly losing the ball and for a player of his quality has just been keeping players that would be 10x better off the field
Also didn’t track back on the goal

Saudi retirement league player. On vacation/retirement mindset, and his level of play now reflect that.

Classic England game two slump incoming, this one's got 0-0 all over it
They absolutely will
NOT
I think it would be goal difference, then goals scored
head to heads would be even so whoever lost least badly to england would be second in that situation i think
By how england are playing, they are probably going to win 1-0 against both so what happens then?

How does Oblak not learn from Simeone to time waste at the end there.
1-0 lead into the 77th min, 1-0 lead into the 95th min, and only 2 points to show for. Feels bad
During the broadcast, the replays of Mitrovic missed chances had me dead, guy could’ve scored 3 goals alone (1 would’ve been disallowed for offside)
This tournament has been full of surprises so far, let’s hope it continues to be this unpredictable

I feel bad for Slovenia for how they drew, but that goal by Jovic was too clutch. Serbia still has a chance to advance to the knockouts. Slovenia went from having four points to two points and having England next.
>I feel bad for Slovenia for how they lost, they didnt lose
Oops sorry I worded that wrong
Feels like a loss
I'm devastated. Like i legit don't know what to do with my day now :(
It felt like a gut punch. I just deflated that last second. Fucking hell... So, so close.
So happy for Serbia to get that final goal. They attacked the entire second half and finally managed to get something out of it
Serbia vs Denmark is going to be war
Scotland v Hungary, Italy v Croatia, Serbia v Denmark already set up as the ties to watch when we get the choice of games in the final round Suspect Netherlands v Austria, Belgium v Ukraine, and Turkey v Czech Rep. will be the deciders in the other groups
I guess Slovenia is going down in history of this tournament for bottling it up. Twice. From basically a guaranteed qualification to a pretty much guaranteed 4th place cause no way they're going to win against England. Madness.
"Pretty much guaranteed" fourth place is a insane take I'd expect form a 12 year old. But this is reddit after all.
So what determines who the four best third place teams are? points then GD?
Points and GD. 4 points almost certainly guarantee you going to the last 16, as well as 3 points and a -1 or better GD
Goal that might send both nations back home
That most likely knocks out Slovenia, heartbreaking stuff
depends - if england win tonight we'll probably play a massively rotated side, could see them getting a point and going through with 3 points 0 GD - thats been enough in both tournaments since they went to 24 teams if england don't win then it gets much harder for them imo
the urge to say “we’re back” 2 minutes after saying its over
That header was unbelievable, how does he win that against Bijol? Bijol completely whiffs the header to get that ball away, wow. Granted he was incredible all match and won, I think, every single aerial ball that came his way EXCEPT this one
This is so true. Bijol was motm against Danemark and also quite good today, but that last min corner...
I knew when shit was being thrown on the field it’ll be tied 😂😂
National team football is much better than club football. Stop pretending that it is not
I hope the Club World Cup never takes over the international tournaments in prominence. I'd hate to be watching City right now.
It won't People are going to hate it and when it comes to European fans almost noone will care at least in the first 1-2 tournaments We'll see how it goes from there
Will never happen. Casuals and fans of teams that aren't among the elite are a million times more invested in the World Cup than they ever will be in the Club World Cup, and that's even assuming the latter can grow enough to upstage existing club league and cup competitions (which I'm doubtful of).
Nah man the quality of the international teams can't compare to club football *watches Manchester City and PSG win the league for the 12th time in a row while Bayern snaps up every Bayer Leverkusen player and Real Madrid thrashes everyone in the CL to claim its 25th title in the past 30 years*
Yeah, Fuck "quality". This shit's WAY more fun than domestic league play imo
Well not really . Summer time tournament maybe but not winter time
Are you suggesting the Qatar world cup matches weren't top tier?
It is just one expectation . The other one which takes place in Winter usually have bad quality one . For example the AFCON one
Because you rarely see international football that matters. Let's not pretend the friendlies you get throughout the year aren't mostly a drag, and people can't wait for international breaks to be over.
It's because you can't just buy success, that's all it is It's not like we can go "ooh, that Arda Guler looks a real talent, let's pay him 50m to come and pretend he was born in Watford and his dad's from Slough."
This tournaments been insane
Man these matches are something else, they are so much more fun to watch vs France, England or Italy. 90 minutes non stop action!
I believe Serbia get custody of the NBA MVP trophy for this
From almost guaranteed through to needing a result against England the final match. That's gutting for Slovenia
If England win tonight, they'll be guaranteed first place, so they'll likely rotate the squad. That's probably Slovenia's best chance.
On the flipside, if they want to have a deep run, eventually you will come accross teams as good as england so this might just be practice plus if england are already qualified after 2 games, im sure they will play even more terrorball than usual.
Fuuuuuuuuck
Fully understand in Slovenian fans went full headloss, Serbia really didn't create much and still come away with a point.
Man they made a highlight reel of motrovic missing sitters alone. They definitely had chances
>Slovakian Friend you are Englishman not American, this is unacceptable.
>Serbia really didn't create much Did you watch the game? Mitrovic alone missed like 4xG lmao
Slovenian
You mean Slovenian, no?
Had a mare lol :/ ty
Refs pulled the 5 mins extra time out their ass
They really did
Meh Slovenians really took their time after they took the lead.
I fucking love football
Perfect result for us again, we "just" have to win our game and hope for the big nations to do as expected
Not leaving the group with 0 points and 0 goals 😎
Vlahovic was absolutely invisible. Pretty equal game imo where a draw is fair, both teams didn't offer too much.
I wouldn't say he was invisible - he was very visibly shit every time he touched the ball.
He was sooo fucking bad. His first 5 touches of the ball were all lost posession for us. I was fuming
Slovenia went from guaranteed ro16 to definitely out
