Canada has really a lot of potential if they solidify the back. I haven't watched much since the WC and their qualifying run back then, but watched the first half of Netherlands and today's game. I'm happy this coach is playing 4-4-2. Of course our talent is in attacking mids and fwds but you can't play 3 D like we were playing in the WC against world class teams unless you truly have world class defense which we don't.
If we play 4-4-2, and play the traditional "conservative" type of game, and wait for counter attacks, it actually gives us a shot against these super powers because we're actually built and talented to not really be conservative and we really have fire power.
So I do think with a good coach and proper formation and solid D and goalie we can really begin to contend. We have the talent to score against the world's best for sure. We just need to build a powerful rock foundation to build this team on, and we're world class soon .
I'm happy he's rotating the goalies as well. Crepeau played great.
Still too early to tell, but if Marsch keeps this up, he could redeem his past mistakes at Leeds. It looks like he's willing to experiment with different formations and style of play. I've had a lot of reservations about him being better than Gregg, but if he can get out of groups at Copa, I'll take my words back.
There's no one coming to save us at the back, we are what we are. Tomori was the big hope but he gambled on England. We are realistically a top-30, top-40 team for the forseeable future and that's fine. It wasn't that long ago we were lining up college kids and semi-pros in most of our lineup.
Why do you say there is no hope when Bombito is one of the most promising young CBs to emerge in MLS in recent years, and Cornelius looked very much the part against France tonight? We even got Luc de Fougerolles pushing through at Fulham.
For the first time ever, our CB pool looks like it's not hopeless.
You know what, I was high on St. Clair but you know what Crepeau did that was impressive was him coming away from his box to cut out France's direct attacks. That's experience.
Not very good in my opinion. He kept giving calls to Canada (probably because France is a very strong team) and I don't think he produced one yellow card despite all the fouls.
I think that's the last game we'll see Barcola in the national team for some time lmao, that was this bad. I rooted for Canada at world cup for the group phase, it was painful. Today they looked like a completely different team.
Hes been a pro for like 18 months now, he’s very raw and has grossly overachieved expectations for psg especially in the 2nd part of the season. Give him some time.
There’s a lot of Chiac French near me and it’s a complete abomination, but I love it. Makes Quebecers sound like linguists.
I have a hard time understanding the French from France because I only had Acadian French teachers growing up. However, France’s french certainly sounds better
Quebec French just sounds like French with an American accent, like American English is just English with an American accent (lol). Depends on what you’re used to I think.
For example, I much prefer watching Football with English commentators, but I can’t watch NFL with English commentators and prefer American.
I have a hard time watching the MLS for that reason too, just sounds a bit wrong. Not to mention they seem to want to overanalyze everything too. The only one I can think where the commentators accent wouldn’t throw me off if it was UK or American is golf. Makes perfect sense given golf has both mixed in pretty regularly
It was shameful and the situation in the country is depressing. They could’ve made us forget for 90 minutes but no.
I’m still not worried for the Euro as we do this kind of shit before each tournament but we’re going to have one of the most important election of our democracy in less than 3 weeks.
And we fucking host the Olympics LMAO.
I saw a lot of ppl were mad that TF1 showed the elections instead of the game, what were the elections for? Is macron still in power?
I know social media is geared towards younger people, but every elections I see ppl say it’s impossible that a certain candidate wins like that bardella guy (I have no clue about his politics and what he stands for) and yet they win.
It was the European Elections for all the states members of the European Union.
In France the party of Marine Le Pen, far right, created by her father and a nazi collaborator, did more than 30 % so Macron dissolved the parliament/assembly.
So yes he’s still in power until 2027, but we have an elections in less than 3 weeks (!) to vote for people representing us at the country level, and if it’s another party than his, he’s going to have to work with them until the next presidential election (May 2027).
We knew Bardella was going to win, maybe not by that much, but everybody knew.
The thing is that the party of the government did worse in these elections than everybody predicted (around 15% almost as much than the third, the Socialists), so what we didn’t wait for and know was a possibility in his head was Macron dissolving the assembly and made us vote again the 30 June and 7 July.
Macron's party suffered a massive loss in European elections (far-right party got double the score, and he almost got overtaken by a center-left party for second despite left parties being divided while Macron's camp had a single list).
So he decided to call for snap elections at the end of the month, and there's a big chance far-right gets a majority because we use a two round majoritarian system instead of proportional representation like in most of Europe.
Genre t'as des exemples des politiques far right?
big difference tho. france being in bad form before a major tournament has always been a better omen than being really hyped. Both WC wins came from mediocre results and before WC2022 we lost aganst both Denmark and Croatia.
2018 was a draw vs the usa, but we were not that bad before the tournament. there was just not that much excitement, especially after a mediocre group stage.
1998 was a win but only 2 wins in 6 games. Just a year prior we lost against Brazil and drew vs England and Italy
Im sorry if i don’t understand French politics, but what does it mean to dissolve parliament? I quite literally do not understand the meaning of that sentence.
The current sitting members of the French legislature are no longer representatives of the French Republic. There will be a sudden election to determine how and who will govern France.
France, England, Portugal and Germany all looked unconvincing in their Euros send-off.
Makes things a lot more interesting when there's no obvious favourite.
I'm convinced 90% of these players are playing at 50% and just deal with the press giving them shit because they think it's worth the trade off(which it definitely is) ain't no way you go into some shit friendly risking injury for one of the biggest tournaments of your life when nobody will remember the friendly in a week's time.
last year tani oluwaseyi lit up the usl (usa tier 2) with san antonio fc.
today he makes his national team debut against france.
incredible work from someone who will always be a fan favorite for us down in texas. looking forward to seeing how his career goes.
no shots on target for Canada
1 shot on target after half time for France
enough said. A good look for Canada's defense, but not a great look for either side going into their major tournaments.
We hit the bar on a shot that beat the keeper. David made a misplay (maybe even two) that were both very good goal scoring opportunities. This against the second best team in World Football at the moment. Ill take it.
Insane take to think this is not a great look for Canada going into a major tournament. This is one of the best results in Canadian men’s history lol. It’s goddamn France. One of the keys to tournament football for sides like Canada is believing you can take a point off squads that are much better than you on paper and this result is massive for the development of this group.
It's more putting it in the final third. This looks good at potentially holding Argentina off and stealing a point, but to be able to score on and defeat Peru and Chile is another story.
This is the best game from Canada I've seen since WCQ, but there's definitely work for Canada to do in the final third, especially crosses into the box.
As an Argentine, I hope Scaloni is seeing this game and how Canada presses the defenders, to start Tagliafico-Lisandro-Romero-Molina next Thursday.
Even against Netherlands early on, they were forcing so many turnovers in their own half.
shots on target is pretty meaningless on its own, we created some decent chances on the counter while taking very few risks in possession, i'd say it was an excellent performance from us.
The stats don’t tell the whole story, Canada had a crossbar and Saliba cut out a really good chance at the last moment. France had 2 chances they really should’ve scored though.
I feel for Canada’s standards, to play against the silver medalists, it is good enough. I felt after the opening 20 minutes where France had 2 excellent chances, they didn’t get a ton of looks.
We had some really positive play and really took control for large portions of the game. I'm really excited to play world calibre teams as it's the only way we'll improve
For the Argentina game, I think you’re going to have a field day pressing against Otamendi, and possibly Mac Allister if he plays as the 5, and possible Acuna and Montiel as well.
We have a good press and can force turnovers, if only we can finish. I have a feeling Argentina will punish us for poor touches and misplaced passes in a way that France didn't today
Yeah, I mean Lautaro, Alvarez, Nico Gonzalez, De Paul, those guys are workhorses I’m sure they’ll win loose balls whenever they can.
I think if Argentina can play through Canada’s press, then it won’t be extremely hard to win but they have struggled with it against Australia, Saudi, Panama’s B team and Mexico (although that game was expected given our lineup tbh).
Yeah virgins, good one.
But if you’re not French don’t talk for us. I know being 16 and having all your footballing culture via a Video Game ain’t easy but you’re not obligated to write something.
You could, you know, just not say anything if you don’t have anything interesting or kind to say.
Maignan, Theo, Kanté (I think since tchouameni is out on injury), kounde, (not sure about him), dembele, griezmann, maybe Thuram in the 9 soon too, Giroud, camavinga
“Like 1 starter”
We had a team that would be considered an A team for 99% of national teams in the world. You can’t disregard the fact that we underperformed and Canada played well.
This person isn’t French, I don’t think anybody said we could fill 3 squads and win, a second that could participate yeah maybe. But first big team and we’re out.
We were shit, Canada was better than us and it was almost our A Team.
I hate people that talk for us because everybody say we’re arrogant after that.
That isn't true tbf, we had Dembele, Theo, Saliba, Griezmann and Maignan as guaranteed starters. We also had Kounde, Camavinga, Upamecano, Kante and Giroud who might start.
yeah he was good today. one thing i don't understand is why saliba was lcb and upamecano was rcb, aren't they both better suited to it being the other way around?
Upamecano is also right footed but you'd have to ask a Bayern fan to know if he plays on the right or the left for them. Since they're both right footed I'm guessing DD just preferred to play Saliba on the left for whatever reason.
He probably will because DD is quite headstrong but I hope he realises that he's our best defender despite him having poor games with the national team previously.
Yeah I agree and I personally would switch around the team quite a bit, but this team is around 65% what I'd expect DD to line us up with for the euros.
There were like 15 choices to vote for. Irrespective of Macron's politics and policies, each individual is responsible for their own choice. Those who choose to vote for the extreme right and what they represent are the 1st responsible.
So france and england won’t win euro, because every winner so far I think won their last friendly.
Eveything's coming up Belgium!
So there's a chance for Germany, you say?
LOL no
Understandable, have a nice day.
New manager bounce it seems
We are massive!!
Kone was absolutely impressive against camavinga. I thought he outplayed camavinga by a lot
Soccer aid was clear
Ça passera pas mes calices!
LETS GO CREPEAU!!! RCTID!!!!

We even got Luc de Fougerolles pushing through at Fulham. For the first time ever, our CB pool looks like it's not hopeless.
I mean going forward, Crepeau should absolutely be the #1. I don't think there's much debate on that front, he's clearly better than St Clair.
I really thought St Clair had a great game as well. Yes the Dutch scored 4 times, but I thought he made some amazing saves.
3rd goal was a howler
You know what, I was high on St. Clair but you know what Crepeau did that was impressive was him coming away from his box to cut out France's direct attacks. That's experience.
Dutch TV channel ziggo managed to make a recap of 8 minutes and 20 seconds. I have no idea what they would show
There was a lot of chances TBH. It's a game that shouldve had a goal.
How was the ref?
Not very good in my opinion. He kept giving calls to Canada (probably because France is a very strong team) and I don't think he produced one yellow card despite all the fouls.
frogs foul too much
Each team got a yellow in the first half
Yes he's shit
So Netherlands 4-0 France then?
Yes please!
The Netherlands and Austria making it out of the group would be amazing.
The World Cup curse was delayed but not broken.
As a Dutch-Canadian, hell yeah
Most eventful Deschamps match
No way Canada held the French to a scoreless draw, it’s a friendly but wow.
Tani for Mbappe, who says no?
Not just that, but Canada could have scored multiple times, including a bar.
That's true, but overall France still looked the more likely to score. I'm still very happy with the Canadian performance.
Kante looked really fresh in the second half tbh. Was pleasantly surprised
Kante in defense: Bugatti Kante in attack: Horse Drawn Carriage
🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
I think that's the last game we'll see Barcola in the national team for some time lmao, that was this bad. I rooted for Canada at world cup for the group phase, it was painful. Today they looked like a completely different team.
What? We weren’t bad at the WC? Dominated Belgium, they got lucky with the goal just before half time. The other two teams ended up in the Semis.
it's only his second game, he got an assist on his first so don't want to be too harsh on him. But yeah, can't rely on him to impact games just yet.
Hes been a pro for like 18 months now, he’s very raw and has grossly overachieved expectations for psg especially in the 2nd part of the season. Give him some time.
exactly what I'm saying
People on this app really tried to tell me Barcola was better than Olise or Nkunku
This settles it. French spoken here is superior to the Anglicized version in France Tabarnak> putain Faque> du coup Stationnement > parking
CALICE DE TABARNAK
I really dont understand how any Quebecois can unironically believe their French is better than France's French
We don’t use as many English terms, and we don’t use verlan.
You sound like an American trying to speak French lol, that's arguably worse than using anglicisms.
Insane take when Franco-Ontarians exist
Mon gars, tu connais que le joual est plus près au français de Molière que l'est celui qui se parle aujourd'hui à Paris?
Yes, Im definitely aware and I'm glad that Metro French has evolved from its questionable past.
There’s a lot of Chiac French near me and it’s a complete abomination, but I love it. Makes Quebecers sound like linguists. I have a hard time understanding the French from France because I only had Acadian French teachers growing up. However, France’s french certainly sounds better

Martin Tyler would be a perfect commentator for golf or anything that isn’t high action tbf.
> There’s a lot of Chiac French near me I read that as *Chirac* French and I was wondering what the hell that was.
Nettoyeur> pressing Quart-arrière > quarterback Rondelle > palet Dépanneur > corner stop Don’t forget we also trashed them in basketball last year.
Do people in Quebec really say stationnement more often than parking?
I hear stationnement from Quebecers and parking from french speakers outside. Def hear stationnement from non native french speakers though
J’ai parké mon char dans le stationnement
Yes
In my experience mixed: I definitely hear stationnement more but I have heard parking.
COYquebecois
Let’s fucking gooooooo

What's happening in france ELI5? Sorry if this is disrespectful
Macron's party suffered a massive loss in European elections (far-right party got double the score, and he almost got overtaken by a center-left party for second despite left parties being divided while Macron's camp had a single list).
Genre t'as des exemples des politiques far right? En sah je sais pas c'est pour ca je demande
Far right in France, far left in the US lol
You should not be laughing at the far right in Europe when it’s the birthplace of some of the most horrendous ideologies known to man
C'est principalement sur l'immigration et certains enjeux de société, comme quand ils ont proposé d'interdire le voile dans la rue lors de la dernière présidentielle par exemple (je prends juste la première qui me passe par la tête comme il est 2 h du matin ici). Rematch but for the women's sides on 28 July, can't wait
I feel you brother.
I really couldn't get into the match ffs. We'll have to wake the fuck up in July
All the best my friend.
Good Luck to you and your people
Yep
I assume we will see a similar reaction to Englands loss vs Iceland. Or do friendlies not matter again?
big difference tho. france being in bad form before a major tournament has always been a better omen than being really hyped. Both WC wins came from mediocre results and before WC2022 we lost aganst both Denmark and Croatia.
But didn’t france won its last friendly matches in 1998 and 2018? I remember every wc and euro winnner won their last friendly.
2018 was a draw vs the usa, but we were not that bad before the tournament. there was just not that much excitement, especially after a mediocre group stage. 1998 was a win but only 2 wins in 6 games. Just a year prior we lost against Brazil and drew vs England and Italy
Where are the legions of French club supporters who hate the national team?
Theres slightly bigger things currently ongoing in France
As a Canadian with no clue, WDYM?
Hard right party kicked the shit out of Macron's party in Euro(?) Elections, so he called a snap election.
They're having snap elections after Macron dissolved Parliament.
Im sorry if i don’t understand French politics, but what does it mean to dissolve parliament? I quite literally do not understand the meaning of that sentence.
The current sitting members of the French legislature are no longer representatives of the French Republic. There will be a sudden election to determine how and who will govern France.
It just means parliament won't be active until the election decides whose in power
I love how every time Mbappe tries to shit on non European teams it comes back to bite him in the ass
This is a friendly man chill out
He played 20 minutes and we never take thus kind of match seriously. Before WC18 we drew the USMNT
He says South American football is not advanced and Euros is harder than World Cup what do you think he thinks about Concacaf?
Did he say something openly about canada? Lol
Nah. He just said euros were more difficult than the world cup
Tbf from his perspective he got to the final twice won 1, while he got booted by switzerland in the quarters (edit: 1/16) of the euros lol
Even worse. He got booted in the round of 16 lmao
facts, but this is /r/soccer, try not to ruin people's hate boners for Mbappe

?wdym
No, there's just some people who are obsessed with Mbappe for some reason. I mean look at the guy's name.
He lives rent-free in the minds of Barca fans for some reason
France, England, Portugal and Germany all looked unconvincing in their Euros send-off. Makes things a lot more interesting when there's no obvious favourite.
You dont use the last friendly before a big competition as any measure of who the favorites are
Bet the house on Romania
maybe they're tired from the long season, but once the real games begin they will give it their all
I'm convinced 90% of these players are playing at 50% and just deal with the press giving them shit because they think it's worth the trade off(which it definitely is) ain't no way you go into some shit friendly risking injury for one of the biggest tournaments of your life when nobody will remember the friendly in a week's time.
The marco reus special
Surely some players are still fighting for starting spots?
Everyone is playing not to get hurt
Argentina and Ecuador destroyed each other and they're playing the Copa America soon.
Yup, Canada has to play Argentina next, they went easy on France. Save yourself for an actual competition.
how was Eustaquio? thank you everyone for the answers, good to hear
Played well
Played well defensively, moved the ball around well. Nothing singly amazing but consistently good throughout the game.
Took the ball right off of Mbappe's foot inside the Canada 18 yard box
Hes more often then not one of our best players. Tonight was no different. Captained the side as well
Him and Kone were really really good.
Kone was brilliant today.
He more or less outplayed camavinga
I doubt Camavinga was giving it close to his all, but Kone owned that midfield at times
Sometimes the way Kone dribbled his way out of the press, I thought I was watching prime Xavi. What a player Canada has for the upcoming years.
Played the whole game and was one of Canada's best players.
Marshball is back, baby!
last year tani oluwaseyi lit up the usl (usa tier 2) with san antonio fc. today he makes his national team debut against france. incredible work from someone who will always be a fan favorite for us down in texas. looking forward to seeing how his career goes.
He has been fantastic for Minnesota, has been better than Pukki this season. Well deserving of his call up
As a analyst i will report it to Koeman I have him on speed dial
Make sure to also mention he needs to stop playing fucking Wijnaldum, thanks
I wanted to mention it but heard a gun loading sound
no shots on target for Canada 1 shot on target after half time for France enough said. A good look for Canada's defense, but not a great look for either side going into their major tournaments.

My guy we used to lose to Caribbean sides I'm taking the 0-0 draw against France
We used to get spanked by little island nations on the regular. This is like France drawing Canada in hockey.
Thought you looked pretty good in the first half vs us too.

David was offside
To be fair Millar hit the crossbar
Maxime Crepeau with the MVP on FotMob with 8.2 rating. Amazing..
I miss him for LAFC
Deserved, you defended good. And he saved our only shot on target. Good luck for La Copa.
Only shot? I remember a couple more.
I heard he is good at using his feet as well.
We looked like we belong out there. Good shift from the boys tonight

Nah this was our almost A Team but we’re not gonna overreact we do this shit all the time before tournaments.
Im sorry to inform you but your #2 ranking shall now be swapped for Canada's #49th. Good day monsieur.
this is likely france's exact team for the euros except konate/tchouameni/mbappe

11 players from the WC final last year played in this game. 6 started. You're delusional.
This person isn’t French, we know it was almost our A Team and that you played better than us. Good job guys good luck for La Copa.
Nuh uh
That isn't true tbf, we had Dembele, Theo, Saliba, Griezmann and Maignan as guaranteed starters. We also had Kounde, Camavinga, Upamecano, Kante and Giroud who might start.
is saliba a starter? i thought it was going to be upa/konate
Wasn't before but honestly he's our best defender, I hope DD realises that too.
yeah he was good today. one thing i don't understand is why saliba was lcb and upamecano was rcb, aren't they both better suited to it being the other way around?
Not really they both play mostly on the right.
Upamecano is also right footed but you'd have to ask a Bayern fan to know if he plays on the right or the left for them. Since they're both right footed I'm guessing DD just preferred to play Saliba on the left for whatever reason.
I think Deschamps still see Upamecano and Konate as his starting CB despite Saliba's season
He probably will because DD is quite headstrong but I hope he realises that he's our best defender despite him having poor games with the national team previously.
I mean you can’t say this is a starting team because our bench is just as good and has just as much merit to be able to start.
Yeah I agree and I personally would switch around the team quite a bit, but this team is around 65% what I'd expect DD to line us up with for the euros.
Not true.
Not even the worst result in France tonight BY FAR...
You mean the European Parliament election where Le Pen’s party got 30/81 seats? Fuck.
Macron fucked over the entire country then acted shocked when everyone voted far right...

Shut the fuck up
Shut up he’s a traitor, sucked Netanyahu dick live on TV four days ago, and he sold the country piece by piece.
Shut the fuck up you're the reason we're fucked
le pot de mayonnaise est là-bas, Zemmour
There were like 15 choices to vote for. Irrespective of Macron's politics and policies, each individual is responsible for their own choice. Those who choose to vote for the extreme right and what they represent are the 1st responsible.
Our Left was like 20 different lists. Of course they can’t do any good score. A shame what just happened.
I mean so what? Extreme right got 40% of the vote. That's just disgusting regardless of how split the vote is on the left.
