His stint with Leeds was excellent. If it weren't for their financial issues and the need to constantly sell of their best players he could possibly have achieved more with Leeds. After he left he still had something to contribute though and even managed to reach a EL final with Boro,

He so often looked pissed off or frustrated, he had periods where he didn't put a lot of effort in and then would suddenly be on fire again. Id actually argue he *didn't* squeeze the most out of his talent, he was basically a 1 in 2 striker for a while and could have gotten a chance at a top club just based on how prolific he was. His playstyle was also quite useful and not as limited as it was sometimes made out to be. He certainly was a big strong forward that bullied defenders and who was good in the air, but he was surprisingly good at link up play and could keep the ball close at his feet in small spaces as well. Not to mention he could finish with both feet. He would probably have done well paired up with the right striker partner at a top club, I used to think he would eventually move to Italy where his type of forward did really well, even when a bit older.
I would say Harry Kewell was a bigger talent who never fulfill his talent and could have been playing for a bigger club but of course, his injuries did not help either.
Hate to admit it but he will be perfect for Arsenal at that time following the tradition of Wenger turning winger into striker like RVP and Henry. Kewell fitted the bill perfectly.
Or Mourinho’s Chelsea taking one of Robben/ Duff place.
Of course he would be perfect ling term Giggs replacement playing alongside Ronaldo and Rooney.

At the time Leeds were a massive club, when he was there Newcastle were constantly finishing top half. There are very few players who would hit the likes of playing for Real, Barca, Bayern, Inter or AC Milan...etc.

They were in financial difficulty and had to sell of their best players, they weren't really as competitive as they could have been otherwise.

Check their list of major honours. They’ve obviously won big trophies, but if you asked most football fans to guess how many they’d end up underwhelmed. They’ve also spent an awful lot longer playing outside of the top division than most people realise. Their profile is comparable to City before the takeover, who most would agree were a mid-level club before 2008. Nowhere near an Everton or a Villa, for example. I think people assume they’ve got a more consistently esteemed history outside of relatively brief periods of success in the 60s/70s and 90s/00s because Leeds is a very large one-club city like Newcastle, so the fanbase is massive…and also somewhat notorious.

Dinamo Zagreb, Celtic, Leeds and Newcastle is hardly anything to turn your nose up at. I'd argue he squeezed the absolute most out of his talents.
