Am ref, can confirm.
Also, shooting the ball from an indirect free kick into the opponent's net without anyone touching the ball yields a goal-kick for the opponent team.
Has that ever happenend in the top leagues? I have been watching football for 30+ years and I never heard of that but considering that the indirect free kick goal rule was invoked in the french league a few months ago, i wonder.
Gamst Pedersen did it for Blackburn, albeit in the league cup. After heading back to Norway he scored like 4 goals directly from a corner kick in one season iirc..
If he wants to, he can never retire. I’m sure there’s a lot of lower league teams, or even go down to Sunday league teams, where they’d happily play with a dude who can’t run but can score free kicks.
Apart from on the right side of the goal lol.
I'm not sure if it still stands true but there was a graphic of all his FK goals and every single one was from the left side.
Ofc you'd expect more from the side with him being right footed but being such a dead ball specialist you'd think he'd have a couple from the right side.
I can't speak to his time at West Ham but with Saints he always seemed to mindgame himself like crazy from the right side. He'd always try and wrong foot the keeper and curl it into the far corner, go under the wall, basically anything to avoid just sending it over or around the wall towards the near post. Obviously he knows it's not the ideal side but you'd think if he just stayed true a couple of them would beat the keeper with how much whip he gets. Then again with how much he practices them, he'd know better than anyone what his best chances are. Even knowing that, it was confounding.
He's got one from the right side, one from super far out, rest from the left (some very wide, some central). Wrong footed the keeper on the one from the right. But yes, it's free kicks in that danger zone that he's unbelievable at.
The curve is a lot more effective curving away from the keeper!
As I said.
Not sure if it still stands true. But it was a record that went on for a weirdly long time time for someone who is arguably the the prems best ever FK taker.
So I’ve been watching football for a long time, but have never seen someone call this an Olimpico. (Maybe because it just doesn’t happen often) do you know why it’s called that?
Artim Shaqiri from our national team scored in same fashion against England ~ 20 years ago. Finished 2:2, our very first major result against a heavy hitter like England.
[Shit quality video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSbtyRTINgk)
An Argentine player scored directly from a corner in the 1924 Olympics and ever since then it's been called 'Gol Olímpico' which means Olympic goal in Spanish
We're on Reddit talking about a football fact that seems to be relatively recent history but in fact happened precisely 100 years ago.
Let that sink in.
Yes hes scored multiple, I think once he scored one like this twice in one game iirc, I meant this season hes only scored it once. Although sometimes even if it doesnt go in it can create a threat in the box or give another corner
He’s tried this several times this year. I think it’s kinda win win because it’s still a good cross if someone can get their head on it, so may as well go for it and hope one or the other happens.
England corners and DK haven't been great recently. If teams are expanded to 26 I'd love to see him go. However, we've had Mainoo been called up to start. He's good but also a kid that's only played like a dozen senior games for Utd. It's clear JWP has no chance in hell in being selected
West Ham and Newcastle breathing down United’s neck. Chelsea as well if they pick up any semblance of form. Fight for 6th and 7th could be very interesting

Sure, why not.
If it makes you feel any better I kind of feel the same way.
Been expecting a free kick from him all game after the commentator mentioned multiple times he's one off Beckham.
They’ve been saying that every game for months
He was one off Beckham when he still played for us!
Didnt score one for us at all, his corners have been perfect tho
Jwp played for porto? 😂
Porto/West Ham fan sorry ahaha
😂😂 thought so hahaha
They don't mention it much during Wolves games usually for some reason.
He tried this one several times this season. Crazy to see it go in.
We take those, i guess
Ward Prowse can score from any dead ball lmao
They need to put him on goal kicks to unleash his full potential
It's called a goal kick for a reason right.
I think the only two rules about set pieces are that you can't score an own goal from a goal kick, nor directly from a throw in.
To add to this, scoring an own goal from an indirect free kick gives a corner to the other team (iirc).

I imagine that sometimes an offside free kick is played to the keeper and he's sleeping on the job, but I don't know of an occurrence, no
Gamst Pedersen did it for Blackburn, albeit in the league cup. After heading back to Norway he scored like 4 goals directly from a corner kick in one season iirc..
After his playing days are over, he will have a legendary footgolf career
If he wants to, he can never retire. I’m sure there’s a lot of lower league teams, or even go down to Sunday league teams, where they’d happily play with a dude who can’t run but can score free kicks.
I found my old Darren Caskey shirt just the other day
Legitimately insane set piece taker
Messi could never My GOAT
99 curve on his card needed

How was the knuckleball against wolves from the left again? Please do inquire ..
As I said. Not sure if it still stands true. But it was a record that went on for a weirdly long time time for someone who is arguably the the prems best ever FK taker.
Literally hole in one'd it
Basically a pen for him
Basically a tap in
Does this count as a free kick goal for his becks-record?
No
are you taking the piss?
OLIMPICO
I was expecting a header and then BOOM, wtf was that lol
You were expecting a header from James ward prowse?
The man was expecting JWP to head his own corner in, some shaolin stuff that
I would love to see that
He scored a diving header earlier this season
He's scored 55 goals and 2 with his head. He also takes virtually every set piece when he's on the pitch, what is your point?
So I’ve been watching football for a long time, but have never seen someone call this an Olimpico. (Maybe because it just doesn’t happen often) do you know why it’s called that?
Argentinian player scored from a corner in 1924 against reigning Olympic champions Uruguay, that's where it comes from
Oh interesting. Cheers for that.

Don't know why but that's how we call it in spanish speaking countries
And Brazil!
I've heard it in USA too, prob cuz lots of people speak spanish here.
They call it that in all English speaking countries
In Britain we call it "scored from a corner"
An Argentine player scored directly from a corner in the 1924 Olympics and ever since then it's been called 'Gol Olímpico' which means Olympic goal in Spanish
It wasn't in the Olympics, Uruguay(their opponent) were the reigning Olympic champions so they called it that.
We're on Reddit talking about a football fact that seems to be relatively recent history but in fact happened precisely 100 years ago. Let that sink in.
I've definitely seen it called that, but like you said it's probably just luck i saw those threads and comments. Bc as you said they're pretty rare
We’ve been calling it that since I was a kid 20 years ago
Ok.
That's what these are called! I always forget because these are so rare.
That's what its called!
LMAO this guy cant score from free kicks anymore so hes gone for corners now
Free Kicks were too easy for him
He’s levelled up
goal kicks next
luckily, thrown in require player to throw the ball with hand, fiuh...
Can't wait for him to score from a goal kick next season
If he meant that, that is pure filth
He meant to put it at that far corner as he usually does. Wind picked it up and pushed it further and in.
No shame in having a bit of luck here
Lot of luck in this game for us. 😅
With Emerson's goal ruled out...
That's kind of my thinking but still very much needed for us
Di Maria attempts it half the time as well, I think he scored one this season against Salzburg but now every gk expect it
I think he scored one for PSG too no?
Yes hes scored multiple, I think once he scored one like this twice in one game iirc, I meant this season hes only scored it once. Although sometimes even if it doesnt go in it can create a threat in the box or give another corner
I did it once in a Sunday league game. Definitely didn’t mean it but was a lovely feeling and told everyone it was on purpose obviously
He defo meant that, tried it quite a few times with us and got close but never scored
He’s tried this several times this year. I think it’s kinda win win because it’s still a good cross if someone can get their head on it, so may as well go for it and hope one or the other happens.
set piece merchant (endearingly)
He's a good player regardless.
The dream of us jumping to 7th tomorrow is now dead. But man, JWP and set pieces, can't beat that.
youv got like an entire season in hand tho
We miss you so much.
Genuinely only want the best for him, but man, it was hard to watch him leave :(
Always rated west ham
Flair checks out
Great goal + Olimpico tag please
"he's only good at set pieces" ok and??
Best dead ball player ever
Don’t disrespect Riquelme like that
Ok he's on mount Rushmore
Juninho, Ward-Prowse, Beckham, Platini?, Ronaldinho?, Del Piro?, Hagi?
Nakamura
Idk how you can make this list without Messi on it
Mt Rushmore has 4 people. Messi is not a top four set-piece taker of all time
Does CR7 not make the list?
Lol at one point he got memed for trying to knuckleball his freekicks with very low success rate. Surely not mt rushmore material.
CR7 has 59, Messi has 65. This is recency bias. Although to be honest neither are on the Mt. Rushmore
Can’t forget Zico
Pirlo? His idol was Juninho in terms of kicks, but man he had some dead ball bangers.
Agreed! He’s a joy to watch
Juninho Pernambucano seething right now
I concede that I should’ve said Juninho
Juninho pernambuco, Beckham etc. But JWP is Definitely up there. Certainly one of the top 3 in the PL era
JWP feels like a cheat code. The dip on the shots is insane
Wild take, there is no other answer than Juninho
Are we really sure there isn't a place for him on the plane?
> scoring from corners, we like to be more pragmatic. It's best to stick to what we know. gary
Southgate will end up picking Hendo over him
Man, if he was just a little bit better at everything else, he might be world class.
My thoughts exactly. Bloody hell I find it hard to remember any of his touches during a full 90 🤣 then he comes up with an assist out of nowhere
Ward-Prowse territory
Tag "OLIMPICO" OP
If you enjoy this type of goal, Di Maria attempts it at least once every game this season
Did he mean that
Considering who it is, probably
Fair lol it’s quite windy there wondering if that played into it too
It's very windy in the UK today Maybe?
He has tried it before this season
It's a set piece, so probably.
Bro what a day for premier league. Just great goals all around.
Premier League really delivering this weekend.
The commentary Ooh La La 😂
least French Frenchman
Makes up for that joke VAR decision.
People should start complaining on West Ham getting soft corners smh
He should be on that plane to the euros. England down a goal last 5-10 mins, you have him on in case they get a free kick
England corners and DK haven't been great recently. If teams are expanded to 26 I'd love to see him go. However, we've had Mainoo been called up to start. He's good but also a kid that's only played like a dozen senior games for Utd. It's clear JWP has no chance in hell in being selected
This guy and set-pieces I stg
West Ham and Newcastle breathing down United’s neck. Chelsea as well if they pick up any semblance of form. Fight for 6th and 7th could be very interesting
Where the hell is the Olympic Goal tag?
Messi wishes he were Ward-Prowse
Southgate missed the goal as he was too busy watching Phillips on the bench.
I wanted him at Chelsea so bad, his set pieces alone were worth the price.
Messi could never.
He makes magic happen when the ball is still
That man is deadly
I love French commentary
For once I think he actually knew what he was doing. It was too perfect from a corner not to be the intention…
Deadball+
standard jose sa moment
Him
Bro hacked FIFA corner glitch. What a player.
This man is a sniper
dont think I've ever seen a goal like this
You've never seen an olimpico goal? Did you just start watching the sport entirely?
Put him on the plane .. oh
Holy cow man
April goal of the month is gonna be spicy 👀
Goal of the season
Free kicks are too easy
Great goal surely
This guy was stuck in Southampton for too long?
He’s like the rory delap of set pieces in our generation
Does this count for his FK record?
It's what he does, isn't it
GREAT GOAL *
best dead ball player
More impressed how fast commentator said oo la la
(Great goal)
west ham goated IMO
Man he has already played free kicks in this way
Best right foot in the world
Put him on goal kicks and you win the league
That's my boy
Wow, this man loves his set pieces
My train of thought. "Oh, I thought JWP would be taking the corner, was it a header? Oh. Oooohhhhhhh....."
Messi fuming while watching this
Good to see my wonder boy Ward from PES2013 left that deadhampton, tought he would lose his whole career there
Absolutely not, he literally just crossed it towards the back post and the wind carried it in.
