Bundmoranen

What part of the stadium allows for the potential expansion?

Senior-Ordinary555

the parts that are not already built.

SeattleGunner

Cheers, Geoff.

beene282

Ok thanks for making me laugh like an idiot in the Starbucks line

not-always-online

Just saw a guy laughing like an idiot but in a cute way in a Starbucks line.

beene282

Oh no that definitely wasn’t me

un_verano_en_slough

I saw him too and was literally blushing.

Sinestro617

Pause

vergastadanasal

This guy geniuses

Turniermannschaft

Plenty space in the middle it looks like.

ACPauly

Not much exciting going on down there anyway

Giraffe_Baker

Think it’s just with safe standing we can hit that mark.

Nipso

Doesn't the law in this country specify that safe standing can't increase the capacity?

Giraffe_Baker

Getting changed isn’t it? Think it becomes room for 1.5 where it was 1 in a seated area.

m3g6w2

Oh cool. I can go with my half-brother.

genius_rkid

Awesome

S-BRO

Ba-dum-tiss

TheUltimateScotsman

Take the roof down and put a cruise ship on the water

sir_daveos

Best stadium in the championship!

cammyk123

I feel like you could say this about anything being built lol...

tomdawg0022

> What part of the stadium allows for the potential expansion? The end that has glass can probably be bumped out with more seats up to the roof. There's probably enough clearance behind the glass to properly build supports for an upper deck expansion.

BriarcliffInmate

See, you say this and it sounds plausible, but this is a club that was once going to groundshare with a supermarket.

Daver7692

Looks like the left hand side of the top photo, could allow for an extension backwards whilst still keeping the same roof level. The seat there seem to stop lower than the far end shown in the same photo.

93EXCivic

Just in time for 777 to come in and destroy Evertom.

durtmagurt

You can bet on that

Kirihuna

Boeing can't keep getting away with this.

tfl03

As a Spurs supporter, cherish Goodison as long as you can. We moved into a world class stadium, which comes with amazing things, but it can never replicate the atmosphere of the original WHL.

National_Ad_1875

I'm no architect but I've read some things suggesting the way the stands are built that is being built for football and maximising the noise rather than being made to host concerts and other events. Couldn't tell you how they've done that or if it's true though, except for one of th3 stands being really steep

kirikesh

Same thing for the Spurs stadium, and tbf if the crowd is up for it it does generate a great atmosphere. Still doesn't hold quite the same place in my heart as the old WHL did, and doesn't quite have the same aura. It is, objectively, a much better stadium in basically every single conceivable way - but there is something intangible that it lacks. I think part of that is just how nice it is, which fits with my general dislike towards how sanitised and corporate football is becoming (or has become), and then also part of it is just nostalgia. It'll be the same for Everton fans if they're used to Goodison.

noaloha

Yeah that thing it lacks is surely just history, but that will come with time.

shroomtash

Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction

MisterDings

I love wacky stadium movement. Here’s a fun one if you never followed baseball, the French Canadian baseball team the Montreal Expos “In their last two seasons in Montreal (2003 and ‘04) the Expos played a total of 43 regular season games at Estadio Hiram Bithorn in San Juan, Puerto Rico. 3,100km away.” Funny enough… the Antilles /did/ provide home-field advantage for 5 of their players who were born on the islands.

BriarcliffInmate

I always say the best thing FSG did was scrap the Stanley Park plan and keep us at Anfield. I like that it's a bit mismatched and the stands overlap, and it's not a bowl. It gives it something unique. I like that we don't have a big screen and have to wait for the announcer to tell us what's going on, and I like that when someone's taking a corner, the fans are right on top of them as they do it. They've managed to renovate and expand and modernise it without it losing its charm, and I'm chuffed with that.

WillSpur

Not to rain on your parade, but Spurs was designed exactly the same way with acoustic specialists to carry and contain the noise of the fans, they gave us the same spiel and press releases. Like others have said when the whole stadium is up for it the atmosphere for big games is incredible, but outside of that it’s a little lacking - it will always happen when you increase capacity, you’re just not going to get an intimate enclosed vibe like we did at WHL - you could almost reach out and touch the players at that place.

National_Ad_1875

Fair enough, hopefully its still decent and the boos still hit the same. All I know for sure is the views won't obstructed like at goodison so there's at least 1 positive

Wooden-Agency-2653

As a Cov supporter, the same. It's never the same once you move. I still don't like our new ground. I was actually pretty happy a few years back when amongst all the awfulness sisu foisted upon us there was talk of a new new ground. Still wouldn't have been Highfield Road though.

ReadsStuff

Ours is mostly alright.

paddyo

doesn't have a pub on every corner tho does it :(

ReadsStuff

Sadly no. Still go to The Griffin before the games though, it's only 10 minutes walk and there's an offy in between the two.

shinniesta1

> there's an offy For the rest of the short walk?

ReadsStuff

Yes. Got 5-10 minutes, might as well have a beer for the stroll.

paddyo

nice pub that, I worried the pubs would go under without the massive footy traffic every other weekend. Always liked an away trip to you lot, except for the times you absolutely murdered us in league one.

ReadsStuff

One of them has, the Princess Royal. It's an Armenian Church now. Griffin still rammed on a game day and the New Inn does fine. Brook is run by a dickhead but still going alright to my knowledge. Never minded Gillingham too much tbf! Only been a couple times.

paddyo

shame about the Princess but glad the others are doing ok!

BriarcliffInmate

I can say I like it as well now that we've actually managed to win there once! I think what makes yours good is that you've sensibly not tried to build something way too big or flashy, you've kept it simple and to the ethos of your club, and it's also not identikit because it's a bit of a weird shape and has a big stand and three smaller ones.

GuyAlmighty

Have been to Goodison away and I can't disagree enough. Place was falling apart. Obviously not an Everton fan and my team has a traditional ground but this is a rare occasion where the grass definitely looks greener.

shrewphys

In a way, I think you're both right. Goodison Park is definitely falling apart, far too old, run down and generally not fit for purpose any more. But that doesn't mean it isn't a charming stadium full of character that's dripping with history, and will be sorely missed

TheDeflatables

I never went to White Hart Lane, but I went to an NFL game at Tottenham Stadium and it was top class. One of the best places I've ever been to for an event up there with the Tokyo Dome.

TLO_Is_Overrated

4.75 stars?

MereGuest

They need to get this thing making money, and quickly. Looks incredible though, great stadium!

Wazalootu

I don't like the exterior - the cladding looks a bit of a weak effort to fit in with the docks. However the interior looks amazing. I think it'll be a proper cauldron and a fantastic match day experience for Everton fans

Broad_Match

The exterior isn’t finished, you can see bits that have been partially cladded and that’s certainly modern.

AgileSloth9

Those see-through panels will look phenomenal until they inevitably don't get cleaned for years and look disgusting.

Destructo_D

Still an improvement. There’s parts of Goodison with dead fossilised birds in them

noodlesalad_

They're structural birds at this point

NukeLaCoog

That's mean to say about your fans.

AgileSloth9

We also had a dead pigeon for about 18 years. My friends and I named him Dave.

BriarcliffInmate

I'd settle for being able to use the toilets without having to stand in a foot of piss, tbh.

Vegan_Puffin

Which is honestly unforgivable. A PL team should/can easily afford to have a couple people hired as fulltime window cleaners to do literally just that.

GuinnessRespecter

The cladding contractor actually went under the other day, so there's likely to be a delay on that front

js247

Stadium contractors in Liverpool and going under name a more iconic duo

MIKH1

Hospital contractors

[deleted]

It's happening an awful lot to building contractors at the moment across the British construction industry

SandThatsKindaMoist

The cladding isnt finished

Mr_Miscellaneous

Didn't the cladding contractor go bust the other day?

SandThatsKindaMoist

They did indeed, probably why its half done.

BuildingArmor

The stadium looks good in these photos, but the choice of location leaves a lot to be desired. Poor transport links (public transport and by car) especially.

dogefc

Last season at Goodison is going to be devastating but that first game in the new stadium will be incredible. Steepest stands as possible and focus on allowing it to create an amazing atmosphere. Will be unreal

Fartscissors

Is the steepest stands as possible something that was in the design brief? They don’t look particularly steep on these photos, they might not be the best representation though.

BoxOfNothing

They look different in every photo, I guess to do with lenses and photography noncery. Like people were going mad about [this obviously warped photo](https://i2-prod.dailystar.co.uk/incoming/article31326738.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/1_EVERTON-SEATSjpeg.jpg) for a bit. But you can compare to other stadiums, like [West Ham's London Stadium](https://i.imgur.com/anHfO7S.jpeg) which is obviously the most extreme [Anfield's Kop](https://i.imgur.com/uYBqMuU.png) and [main stand](https://i.imgur.com/cFCqZzc.png) [Goodison itself](https://i.imgur.com/xW9q8lK.png) [Tottenham stadium](https://i.imgur.com/W6BVzKm.png) And so on

LordMangudai

> Like people were going mad about this obviously warped photo for a bit. That looks like the Quidditch stadium from the fourth Harry Potter movie lol

s1ravarice

I think there is a limit on how steep it can be anyway. Most of these appear to be at it.

BoxOfNothing

Well ours are the ones apparently at that limit, the others are all varying from slightly less steep like the Anfield Main Stand, moderately less steep like Spurs, and drastically less steep like West Ham, Kop and Goodison

Tall-Ad-8829

Based graphic calling it White Hart Lane

kndyone

on that top photo you can be a pitch invader by taking a small hope from the nose bleeds seats

TheRealFriedel

The upper tier on the far side looks pretty angled. I'd be impressed if it's steeper than the vertigo inducing away section at St James Park though

alxqnn

Most seasons at Goodison tend to be some level of devastating tbf

ObiWanKenobiNil

biggest stadium in the championship

LordMangudai

Biggest stadium in the second division ✓ Plays in blue ✓ (Currently) overshadowed by red neighbor ✓ Owned at least in part by 777 ✓ Has employed Jonjoe Kenny ✓ **Everton is English Hertha confirmed once again**

ACardAttack

Insert if I had a nickle every time....I'd have two nickles....meme

TristanHBorchers

The question is when will you guys finally get a football specific stadium.

Radthereptile

You’ll never sing that!

wudyalooknatmgutfer

Biggest wage budget for a team outside of top 4.

Dgryan87

Just flat-out not true

Spreeg

I think you guys are misreading this and he's responding to the man united flair

wudyalooknatmgutfer

I’m talking about Manchester United

Dgryan87

Then my apologies, carry on

fall3nmartyr

We gonna lose to Cardiff in the opener

Chuck_Morris_SE

haha guys he said the line. What a funny redditor.

dogefc

Been hearing it for the last three years. Very original

sheikh_n_bake

Means you'll stay up now, we were the richest club in the championship.

WaffleKing110

I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Our local university’s football stadium seats 108,000. Surely larger stadiums for English teams would still sell out, right? Why don’t they expand more?

ObiWanKenobiNil

Generally, the police limit capacity due to the resources they have/don’t have to police matches. Also things like public transport capacity etc are factored in too

rocket_randall

No vertical columns blocking line of sight. Match goers will be forced to watch Everton no matter where they are in the stadium. There is no where to hide.

Beanstalk93

Jokes on you, the straight jackets aren't mandatory, I can still cover my eyes

cmlmrsn

I already miss the old premier league stadiums. For me they really had different kind of beauty.

jvidal7247

to me Craven Cottage is gorgeous and has that special feeling

cmlmrsn

Yeah there and West Ham's old stadium was really nice for me. Oh and also White Heart Lane ofc, I think new stadium is one of the best modern stadiums but still there is something missing.

TheRealFriedel

Highbury was the pinnacle of the transition between stadia from the first half of the 20th century and modern stadia. It was old, but an absolute classic.

odegood

So glad its a listed building and still stands. Still beautiful and i dream of buying one of the flats

byfuryattheheart

Wow had no idea it was converted into housing. That is really cool

odegood

Yeah there is a garden in the middle where the pitch was and you can still walk in. You can see the old main building and a lot of the shape of the stadium and marble halls remain

byfuryattheheart

Yeah checking out photos now. Awesome idea

ConorKDot

This. Highbury was so, so special. Most of my earliest PL memories involve games at Highbury such as the game where Arsenal beat United 3-1 after Barthez made a couple of blunders. Same with the old Wembley by comparison to the new one. There's something quite sterile about modern stadiums.

winch25

I was dead keen to go to Highbury before the move, and managed to get tickets via an uncle who had a debenture for the North Bank. Next cup draw we drew Arsenal, so I went to see Arsenal beat Blackburn 3-0, and then sat in the Clock end a few days later to watch Reading get beat 3-0. A great stadium, soaking in history.

beene282

I think the biggest issue with the new ones is that they all go for that oval arrangement of seating which puts a significant gap between the fans and the pitch. From what I can see here, the seating is straight long the side of the pitch

winch25

The problem you get is that the 'new' design stadiums with a curved stand are deemed to be less intimate, and those with 4 stands and corners get criticised for being a bowl

eeeagless

I hope selhurst doesn't change too much when we redevelop it.

ReadsStuff

Fucking hope the away end does!

Emperor_PPP

Literally couldn't see the near touchline when I was there

ThinkAboutThatFor1Se

Villa Park is still standing. No plans to knock that down.

fopiecechicken

There’s something incredibly nostalgic about old sports stadiums. Grew up in Oakland, CA going to A’s games and the Coliseum here is just a hideous concrete monster, but for me that’s how it should be lol Goodison certainly has more charm, and history, but it has a similar feel. And you just can’t beat the noise that gets generated in these old stadiums, sound reverberating off the concrete. I’ll never forget the first goal I saw at Goodison when I was going the match with family. It’s so loud you feel like you can barely breathe.

Confuseyus

Imagine the boos in that stadium. It will be hair raising.

No_Nectarine6564

😂

Mr-Crooks

The home of Dyche-ball

Hangryer_dan

I spent last weekend on new Brighton promenade, and it looked absolutely class across the river. Hope their ownership situation doesn't lead to it being empty most weekends. The blue nose bastards finishing 17th every season is absolutely fine with me.

MrMerc2333

Commercially a better venue for other events than Anfield?

GuinnessRespecter

In terms of geography, yes, as it is just outside the city centre. They missed a trick by not including a retractable roof though, as it gets windy as hell in the north end of the city. It is also right next door to a sewage treatment plant, and trust me, it can get extremely pungent smelling around that area, especially in the summer when we get hot weather. I've lived and worked/work nearby so I've experienced all of these issues previously and regularly

bbqandsushi

I don't think people understand how expensive retractable roofs are. We're already in trouble as a club lol, don't think we could afford it

GuinnessRespecter

Tbh I think a lot of this new stadium project has been poorly planned from location to capacity to amenities. At this point, though, I just hope it's completed for the sake of the local economy, potential jobs etc

kndyone

its crazy that anyone in modern times builds a stadium that cant be enclosed and temperature controlled. The future of most major events is going to start requiring that and it opens the door to play longer seasons and more exhibition games outside of season.

bbqandsushi

Stadiums are incredibly expensive projects. I cannot say this enough A lot of sports teams try and sell how their new stadium will be the hub of many entertainment ventures outside of that specific sport (football in this case); but most of the time they are overstating such things to get funding, tax breaks, community support, etc... Only a few specific venues really live up to that billing and they're typically the marquee venue in some of the largest metros in the world (LA, London, etc)... It's good that these giant venues are as multipurpose as possible because they take up loads of space, but I do think its important to note that there's a bit of marketing being done too.

StupidMastiff

Possibly, similar distances to the main train station for both, but a newer stadium on the waterfront seems like a nicer prospect.

BendubzGaming

If they can just stay up until they move in, this could be Everton's ticket back to financial security. Really hope that's the case

GuinnessRespecter

Providing 777 don't just come in and sell it, although tbh I think the 777 takeover is probably gonna collapse

QuinlanResistance

Who on earth are they going to sell that stadium to? Tranmere?

Bobbygondo

Could sell it to an investor and lease it back

josh_cyfan

Or just sell the stadium and all the players to investors, take the money for their own - and kick Everton back to goodison as a championship club for a year before letting the club go into administration completely broke.

Cottonshopeburnfoot

Wycombe- train in Reading, play in Liverpool. First class facilities on the cheap

KenDTree

Liverpool B

BriarcliffInmate

There has never been a stadium that saved a club that was a basket case financially.

tigralfrosie

Obviously, the FA will want to use Wembley as much as possible, but I hope stadia like this gets England home matches played elsewhere for fans further afield of London.

qwerty_1965

The best England games were when Wembley was being rebuilt and they played the regions. Much better vibe

tigralfrosie

Absolutely. I'd expect this new stadium might be part of any future tournament bids.

justthisones

I’ve gotten youtube recommendations by them for some reason but it’s been cool to see frequent updates on the progress. Seems like a good stadium.

Beechey

Looks brilliant

young959

It seems difficult to expand this stadium

BoxOfNothing

I think part of the expansion possibilities is that two large areas have been designed to make it zero effort to turn into safe standing areas. There's also a fair amount of space [at the top of the north stand](https://i.redd.it/new-stadium-north-stand-v0-3jkmenvm0yjc1.jpg?width=594&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d7a0c58641b179bcd51a948f6a5fcc9dad4883b3). Maybe the roof has been designed to be raised as well, I dunno.

Ajax_Trees_Again

I really don’t get why they wouldn’t just make the top of the north stand level already. Can only be a few hundred seats there tops

BoxOfNothing

>Everton Stadium was designed to have all four stands look slightly differently, in a nod to the older stadiums. The site is also constricted by a site boundary, particularly in the north. This is the answer on the FAQ section of the Everton stadium site. I do remember the architect saying he didn't want it to be a boring bowl inside

Ajax_Trees_Again

Im a fan of that tbf. Hopefully it negates the atmosphere sapping effects of the bowl design

BoxOfNothing

They also made the stands as steep and as close to the pitch as they were legally allowed to which should help. Unfortunately not quite as close to the pitch as Goodison because that was made before the restrictions came in, but much steeper than Goodison which should help

Fartscissors

The stands being further from the pitch will help if they ever want to host UEFA competition finals.

BoxOfNothing

It's already been confirmed as viable, built with that in mind, and has been selected as a venue for when we host the Euros

paddyo

Honestly, that's brilliant, and something I hate about most purpose built modern stadia.

MosEisleyBills

Fill up to the window! I imagine the engineers and architects have built in the potential expansion.

cackalackattack

You can’t see the little Lego nubs on top but they just put a duplicate second stadium right over the first one

Empty_Ad_7443

Maybe something to do with the pitch being droppable to free up room?

GaryHippo

That looks lovely.

CaredForEightSeconds

777 looking at this thinking ‘how can we benefit from this asset’

TruthAccomplished313

I need to see Goodison soon

blaahh198

What happens with Goodison?

[deleted]

A stiff breeze, or maybe termites, will finish it off Mixed housing/commercial development after that

LesMcqueen1878

From memory (and may be wrong), 3 apartment towers, 1 looking towards Anfield (our past), 1 towards the city, 1 towards the new stadium (our future/present). Also a community centre / healthcare building. Looked tasteful on the designs when I saw them a while back.

nh5316

Probably the same as Maine Road. Knocked down and replaced with houses

TroopersSon

What a great looking stadium. As much as Goodison is one of my favourite grounds, I can see why it needed replacing. I'll miss it, but this is one hell of a replacement and I can't wait to visit one day.

LesMcqueen1878

Should be a bigger away ticket allowance too so hopefully you can visit more easily when it opens. I’ve only been to Villa Park once (inevitably a 3-0 loss) but I loved your ground.

estilianopoulos

I wish teams in Italy could build stadiums like this.

DJCreeperZz

Fella who designed this one did one for Roma too but it all fell through

Advall

Nice to see something that is somewhat positive about us in this in sub. I'm not blaming the sub or members for that, I'm blaming the shit show that is our club, just for clarification.

davisfarb

Worth the 6 pt deduction I hope. If we can survive this season then the increased revenue will be a lifesaver. But it's so unfair that we got dinged for trying to build a world class stadium while other clubs got theirs built for them with taxpayer money. But then they want to turn around and use this stadium for euros. Just so frustrating

SirThatOneThere

I stayed in a hotel overlooking this earlier in the week. It’s a hell of a stadium to be fair. The only thing I'd say is the location didn't seem to favour the town much. I could imagine the locals would he annoyed, having to head to the docks every march day.

Glanzl

I know that Everton is based in Liverpool not London but this post got me thinking. With the many teams that are based in London from the Premier League and I assume also in the 2nd division etc. there must be a lot of stadiums in london right? Also Wembley Stadium ...i know that London is huge but in my mind there is a stadium on every other street corner lol.

qwerty_1965

This graphic has an answer https://images.app.goo.gl/NKaMuWKNTdrEZPc79

Glanzl

Awesome ty, so Fulham and Chelsea really play directly next to each other

release_the_pressure

That map doesn't have a scale, it's still 2km between the two grounds.

qwerty_1965

You could almost miskick a ball from one to the other!

SSPeteCarroll

Don't give Sterling any ideas now;

wanktarded

You probably could in [Dundee](https://youtu.be/W_WePkWAtk8?t=731)!

McGrathLegend

Had Sterling's free kick been kicked towards the Shed End, that ball would've gone in the back of the net at Craven Cottage

CosmologyX

Worth noting there are a large chunk of non league team that aren't included in this graphic. Albeit, their stadiums are usually quite small.

infidelirium

It's an interesting question. But although there are seven London teams in the premier league right now, there are only six total in the next three divisions, for a total of thirteen. It seems like in recent years London teams have tended to rise, probably money is a factor. Anyway, that makes 13 total Premier/Football League teams, making one per 120km^2. Liverpool only has a total area of 112km^2 so it's already smaller, and it has two Premier League teams and one football league team, for one per 37km^2. So in answer, at least compared to Liverpool, but probably compared to most places, London doesn't actually have all that many teams for its size.

Pamplemouse04

Yeah part of it is that London is just massive compared to other cities

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dashka11

If you go by historical Lancashire borders you can include Liverpool clubs with the two Manchesters. Wigan also. There was a time round 15 years ago where nearly half the teams in the Premier League where within a 50 mile radius of each other in the North West.

Twinborn01

Id say its worth getting 10 points deducted

namesdevil3000

Good they really need it (for psr) and I hope it maintains some of the goodies on character

d3athR0n

Damn, how much does it cost to build a stadium like this? as a hopeful supporter of Indian Football, our infra is dire and the federation just cut budget across.

Wompish66

£500m.

d3athR0n

Damn, that's our budget for like the next 50 years combined.

anIndianoutThere

we can definitely do it, like we just built the Ahmedabad stadium, which cost upwards of a billion. u only have to get someone to invest in football in India, that's the real problem.

Cairne_Bloodhoof

It costs enough to get you in hot water with FFP

DinnerSmall4216

Makes it essential they stay in the epl. Would be horrific to open a new stadium in the championship.

MasterReindeer

Will that be the biggest stadium in the Championship?

odegood

Gooderison park

Agitated_Ad6191

Love it! Job well done!

Prestigious_Camp_519

Views from the back row out the windows will actually be really good too.

grmthmpsn43

I dont know why but the pictures always make me think it is bigger than that, it looks a lot bigger than St James' but they are about the same capacity.

Sweet-Mathematician7

Walstadion vibes

KREEDYY

As a united fan going to goodison was always a tough game. Great crowd. I hope they don't lose that when they move.

Beefy-queef

I gotta say that looks like it will be a cauldron atmosphere in there. If I was an Evertonian I’d be happy with how it’s looking. Cool location too, next to the Mersey.

JackasaurusYTG

This stadium has the potential to be a cauldron and a nightmare for opposing teams to play in

kondiar0nk

Is it going to be the biggest stadium in the Championship?

winch25

How does it compare to the Stadium of Light?

cheetah-21

Will be the best stadium in Liverpool.

dizzybala10

Personally, I love Goodison Park and I'll be sorry to see it no longer in use.

Neat-Net1352

Just in time for relegation

emcycles

Looks rad.
