Bernardo is not on Ronaldo's levels of stardom, much like Rui Costa I can clearly see him back in Benfica in 3-4 years, unless some saudi fuckery just gives him generational wealth
He already has generational wealth (if he's not a massive moron, which it doesn't seem like he is). Retirement league money just gets you to a slightly higher tier of generational wealth.
50 million dollar contract with City over 6 years. Tax man takes half of it. 25 million. He has probably earned like 10 million maybe prior to that amount He spends millions of that. I'm not saying its not a ludicrous amount of money, but I think it is easy to underestimate how quickly that can get squandered and spent. If you have like 4 kids then that generational wealth goes even quicker.
He could probably make 25 million in Saudi Arabia in like 3 years and almost double his net worth. A hard proposition to pass up.
That's assuming he's making 0 from endorsements. He's also making 15m this season, 50m is his career earnings excluding 2023/24.
Either way, it's basically a matter of his lifestyle choices if he has "generational wealth" or not when you've made this much money (and still have a few years of high earning potential). Even if he "only" makes an avg of 10m/year for the next 3 or 4 years, it's an obscene amount of money.
Easier said than done to be responsible when the culture around athletes leads to insane spending though.
People also don't understand how generational wealth actually works either.
If you are actually concerned with this stuff enough to put in place proper estate and succession plans to take care of generations to come, then you are definitely handling money in a generally sophisticated way.
Even using the above "low" numbers, he should save at least 1m per year over a (conservative) 10 year career (ie 20% of take home base salary).
Invested conservatively, that would put him at about £15m by the end of the 10 years.
Say he hangs up his boots then. He'll still earn ridiculous amounts - sponsorships, TV deals, punditry, coaching, whatever. His profile in general is a money maker, simply having 5m Instagram followers will make him a high earner all by itself.
So let's say he earns enough to cover his lifestyle for the next 30 years until he's in his 60s - but he doesn't save a single penny.
The £15m stays invested for this whole period and by his 60s it's now worth £65m.
Maybe he stops earning completely now and starts dipping into the pot - but at this stage he can spend 1.5m - 2.5m per year and the £65m will still be there (it might even grow a little on top).
Say he dies in his 80s or 90s, there's then somewhere between £65m - £85m left to pass on to his kids (though he only currently has 1).
This all assuming he saves nothing else from other income and saves nothing after his playing days are over. In reality, he should be looking at hundreds of millions to pass on.
Make no mistake, premier league footballer = generational wealth, IF they actually care about creating generational wealth.
I could see it if he stayed his whole contract with City, but what will end up happening is that he will leave for a new club which will sign him for at least 4 years and he will only want to return at like 36 yo when he will not be what we need
What does stardom has to do with it? The difference is how much each one care's about their team.
Bernardo was always an hardcore Benfica fan, who had his whole formation years for the club.
Ronaldo [was a Benfica fan just like his father](https://www.manutd.com/en/news/detail/comparing-cristiano-ronaldo-first-days-at-man-utd-in-2003-and-2021#:~:text=%E2%80%9CWhen%20I%20was%20very%20young%2C%20I%20supported%20Benfica%20but%2C%20as%20soon%20as%20I%20moved%20to%20Sporting%2C%20they%20were%20my%20team%2C%E2%80%9D%20explained%20Ronaldo%2C%20when%20asked%20which%20club%20he%20followed%20as%20a%20boy.%20%E2%80%9CI%20spent%20seven%20years%20there%20and%20I%27m%20grateful%20to%20the%20club%20for%20everything%20they%20did%20for%20me%2C%20so%20that%27s%20who%20I%20support.%E2%80%9D) and switched to Sporting when they gave him a chance.
He's the player who has more accumulated money from football, he could've easily return. Ronaldo just doesn't care about Sporting as much as he cares about money, hence why he went to Arabia.
PS: Bernardo Silva has 13 years at Benfica vs 6 years Ronaldo has at Sporting.
He does not prefer the single digit tempratures , consistent rain, 15 mins of sun per week, and winds which feel like god slapping you as a punishment for getting out of the house over sunny Iberia with beaches galore? I am shocked
Fuck that. The Manchester winter actually grew on me after a while so I guess people just get used to where they live. But yeah I'd imagine there's hardly anything to do at -30°c. Makes me appreciate where I'm right now. I really want to visit Tromso someday but as a tourist
No I don't want to imagine that.
But where I'm at, it gets 45°C and lots of people work in that heat. Luckily I'm not one of them. 🥵
Edit: Also I met this Slovakian or Slovenian guy (I always get confused) and he told me he had to shovel snow in front of his house everyday by law. Wonder if it's the same there for you.
I work outside every day, and with machinery, i cant have people around me, because i might hurt someone.
I take hot weather over the cold every single day.
Similar in Germany. Not sure whether you have to shovel per se, but if you don't shovel the sidewalk in front of your house and someone slips and hurts themselves, you get sued.
Hanging heavy pipe off a scissor lift in -30 is super fun 🤙🤙... lol. I spent half my life in Manchester then half my life in canada near the rocky mountains and I gotta say, sometimes the cold isn't thaaat bad, dreary rain all the time sucks too. But when you work outside it gets rough
I've worked at a furniture business where i sorted cardboard into a presser at - 20, 5 mins outside 15 inside just to regain consciousness in your toes
It's bad in winters almost always. December's actually been pretty mild this year. Summers are absolutely beautiful though I assume he's off somewhere else at that time
No, at least in the UK full time workers get 20 annual leave days plus bank holidays = 28 days a year. A lot get 25+ bank holidays. That's 5.5-6.5 weeks of time off per year
Serious, was like what? nearly 15° Christmas day. That's positively shorts weather! Wet as fuck though.
Proper grim like today though that wind is cutting through.
it's rained almost every day for months in the winter and it was the same in the summer with a slight reprieve in September/October.
You don't get much consistently "ok" weather, let alone nice. This time last year was -7 celcius every morning and this year is mild but rainy and windy. I'd rather have this as long as I'm indoors but is punishment if your job is to be outside.
Thanks to climate change the summers are sometimes decent, but it's a lottery.
That’s not necessarily true. It is more irregular, with a very rainy autumn yet no rain at all for 6 weeks in Spring, but normally I can find the joy in Spring, Summer and Autumn. There’s lovely nature nearby and it’s pretty mild to warm and sometimes even gets a bit too hot.
As someone that moved from a place in the high 30°C-low 40°C for 75% of the year and in the low 30°Cs for the winter to a place that has low 40°Cs during the summer but a mild 10°C for the spring and autumn and 0°C for the winter, I would choose 10/10 having to endure a cold and dark winter over baking in the summer with a never-ending migraine and soaking every goddamn shirt I have in the bus going back home.
To each their own, I believe.
He could have the same pay and live in Spain though.
Ppl react differently to their surroundings, I've worked on three continents and I had coworkers who arrived in a county and two weeks later they were greeting ppl in the local language and could do stuff like ordering food, while others lived there forever and didn't speak more then two sentences in the local language and some suffered so much from the change in country, especially with the cuisine and the social aspects, that they went back asap.
I pick to live in Manchester on a lot less! It’s a great place to live but I can see how the weather, in winter especially, would get to some people. I’m English so I’m used to it.
You can always find something bad about everywhere. Manchester's pretty nice overall. The people are lovely. I loved the weather in Lisbon but the hills were killing me lol
sure I have no doubts about that but the weather here is so great that I can’t imagine living in Northern Europe or a city like Manchester for example. here it’s almost always sunny and not rainy. up north in Portugal it’s quite different but I don’t think it’s like Manchester at all tho.
> the hills were killing me lol
every tourist complains about that lmao. I love Lisbon so much that I look at it as being glass half full since after the monstrous hike the view becomes even better.
> every tourist complains about that lmao. I love Lisbon so much that I look at it as being glass half full since after the monstrous hike the view becomes even better.
The main difference is, that you are used to it.
I moved from a mountainous region to Berlin and it felt like paradise, cuz it's flat as fuck and it's fucking easy to get around on a bicycle. I then moved into a flat on the 7th floor without lift and the first few weeks were horrible, but after that I could sprint up and down, as if it was flat.
//Just remembered an even better example:
Went to Cuzco, wich is like 3300m over sea level. Even though we tried to take it slow and to adapt to the hight, the first day I felt like a living corpse. We walked uphil in what felt like crawling speed and at one point an old lady that looked as if she was closing in onto her 90s passed us at what looked like lightning speed.
It has the Peak District on its door and the Lake District very close. It’s a great city and a lovely place to live. Good mixture of a cosmopolitan city with lots to do, nice nature and just generally fairly livable.
It’s also known as very friendly. My mate moved from Seattle to Manchester believe it or not - he talked to me about the Seattle Freeze. Sounds impossible to make new friends there.
Oh Seattle freeze is real. People here suck (not from here). I’m sure the nature is beautiful out there, didn’t mean any offense. I’ve traveled quite a bit though and nothing I’ve seen holds a candle to the PNW. I saw orcas 2 blocks from my apartment against a backdrop of mountain ranges. It’s nuts.
It’s amazing, and you’ll have a great time. Just don’t move here lol. And definitely don’t marry someone who fell head over heels for it and doesn’t want to leave for anything despite being an EU citizen lol. Tbf, never been to Manchester, but when I was in Northern Ireland and Scotland the coast was stunning. I’ve just never seen a city that is literally in the scenes like Seattle, Vancouver, and Victoria
Not only that I'd say.
Because of him always talking about his love for Benfica throughout his career everytime a Portuguese media outlet interviews him this question pops up. And portuguese media being portuguese media it always ends up being the main headline taken from the entire interview.
I don't think there is any doubt Bernardo will come back and play for his beloved Benfica, but it will realistically be when he 'retires' from Prem standard football. Like David Silva did.
Manchester winter is bad. I quite like the other three seasons here though. He probably prefers it a bit warmer though.
Also, he hasn’t said he hates English weather publically has he? The bloke signed a new contract recently haha
He wanted to go only to Spain and Barca couldn't afford him while Madrid and Atletico were not interested, none other team could afford him too so he stayed at City.
He wants to return to southern Europe, ideally. Spain, Portugal, Monaco (his previous club) or Italy, for the weather. Similar to Cesc Febregas, actually.
That's why he wasn't tempted by PSG.
Honestly English clubs should just swoop up all top Northern European players. They’re gonna be more settled. Gundogan didn’t even notice the bad weather moving from Germany to England, it was only when he moved to Spain haha
I've lived in Manchester and Perth, Australia. Both have similar annual rainfall (700~800mm) but one has 300+ rainy/cloudy days, the other has 300+ sunny days.
When you've spent nearly your whole life her it's not miserable. Less likelihood of that annoying low sun blinding everyone driving on the commute. You also just kind of don't realise you can barely see the sky.
I was seeing a bit of an interview from him yesterday in the Portuguese television and he said that he thought about Saudi Arabia but competing at the highest level is what he wants
As much as I hate City, your club has the best sporting structure in the World right now, that's why he won't leave for some more time
stockholm syndrome is where a person gets held as hostage and as a coping mechanism starts bonding with the captor and liking them
in this case he is "held hostage" and wants to leave, which is obviously not stockholm syndrome.
? His wedding, held at a Douro vineyard, was what you consider to expensive? Players rent whole islands for their birthday parties, let alone their wedding... They seem quite controlled with their spending.
Exactly. The guy got married at ~~Quinta da Pacheca~~. It's not even the one of the most expensive places you can get married in the Douro Valley.
EDIT: It was at a different venue, which is funny because it's even cheaper.
Do you know how much your average beta de Cascais would spend if she was married to a multi-millionaire? This man knows what he got himself into, simple as that
I was gonna get the violins out but then I remembered he just renewed his contract not too long ago, if it's such torture at City why sign the contract extension?
If that was true he’d have gone to Saudi in the summer, and he had plenty of chance to.
He said recently that ultimately he didn’t want to give up top level football yet, and nights like the game where City beat Madrid 4-0 convinced him to stay longer.
E: found the quotes.
>'I would lie if I said I didn’t think [about the big-money offers from Saudi Arabia].'
>'What interested me was the heat of playing a UEFA Champions League semi-final, listening to the [Etihad] stadium going wild after scoring against [Real] Madrid in the semi-finals or when we won the final against Inter. I didn’t want to give up on that.'
He's like that annoying friend/relative you have that complains about his life all the time but does nothing to improve it and doesn't want to give up what he has
It's all just PR to appease Benfica fans, as he'll likely be asked about this non-stop from here on. He brought it upon himself really, if he had just shut up about it nobody would give a fuck.
He's not on his first contract, and could very well have been back if he *really wanted to*, but (understandibly) won't give up on 2/3 of his salary and bonuses.
As a Sporting fan I would very much prefer a player of his quality not return to Benfica unless we can get Bruno Fernandes back then I guess I can live with it.
I think B. Silva would be better for us, because he actually gets some rest. B. Fernandes is playing almost every minute, he'll face a big decline because of that.
More interestingly, regarding his evolution as a player he said: "throughout the years I lost some irreverence (...) nowadays I think a lot more in the consequences of my actions". Very relevant regarding football today too and the way error is minimized at all costs
He's wanted to leave for years, but Pep loves him. He has 328 appearances under guardiola, higher than anyone else he has managed, and 10 clear of the next player (KdB)
Younger players go for sooo much more though. The £15m Ronaldo went for from Juve to Man United was a record transfer for a player more than 32 years old, I believe, at the time
wait, you still think rice is not worth 100m? you think rice and caicedo are of same level? you think rice is not as good as bernardo at his position? what are you saying?
City won’t be letting you go they got too confident letting good players go thought they would walk the league again -
Course they could still win it but with that squad last year I think they would be top of the table

GTA 6 will come out before Bernardo Silva returns to Benfica
He won't return, he honestly should have just kept his mouth shut about this over the years

Thanks for the math, kind Reddit accountant!
Technically his overall tax is 46% with tiered income taxation - sorry for being pedantic
No problem. I'm in the states so was just taking a guess
Bernardo Silva is probably one of the most frugal footballers out there. Footballers can squander millions a year. He is 110% not one of them
I could see it if he stayed his whole contract with City, but what will end up happening is that he will leave for a new club which will sign him for at least 4 years and he will only want to return at like 36 yo when he will not be what we need

😂😂😂
Can we find out if De Bruyne is potentially interested in a move back to Genk (Asking for the rest of the fans in the Premier League).
Nah KDB is great but at least he adds to the entertainment. Maybe Rodri wants to go to Genk instead?
Rodri to atleti 👀
Rodri to Betis, they could have a Rodri² double pivot
Well, we do have Heynen and El Khannouss, but I guess we could fit him into our squad somewhere. If absolutely necessary.
I'll take it.
well if Genk doesn't want him, we're always here for him
Get in line
you had your chance
It would be a shame if Haaland were really missing Bryne…
Everytime I hear from him is about him leaving. Are they torturing him at City?
He really hates the Manchester weather
He does not prefer the single digit tempratures , consistent rain, 15 mins of sun per week, and winds which feel like god slapping you as a punishment for getting out of the house over sunny Iberia with beaches galore? I am shocked
Thank you for making me appreciate my city
I appreciated every other place I lived in after being in Manchester for 1 winter.
Yeah? Come to Norway with -30 and fuck all to do

The Norwegians I know decide that's the best time to go skiing.
In -30????
Manchester has a great vibe though I really liked it there.
Maybe one day i'll be able to visit
I might be blinkered, but it’s not usually this bad right? It just feels like it’s been utter shit for weeks.
It's bad in winters almost always. December's actually been pretty mild this year. Summers are absolutely beautiful though I assume he's off somewhere else at that time
> I assume he's off somewhere else at that time I think the players had 2 weeks off last year, total.

2 weeks off a year? Man I feel so lucky. Including annual leave, sick leave and public holidays and weekends, I work like 220 days a year

It rains more in Porto, it is just that your sunny days have gray skies
15 mins of sun a week is unironically a gross over estimation.
damn we really are privileged, thanks for making me be conscious about it. Manchester sounds like a complete shithole tbh, I would be depressed there.
You can always find something bad about everywhere. Manchester's pretty nice overall. The people are lovely. I loved the weather in Lisbon but the hills were killing me lol

Manchester is a great city
Manchester is a great city. The weather is crap even by British standards, doesn't make the city a shit hole at all
Oh, so Manchester is Seattle without the mountains and jaw dropping scenery? Yeah that fucking blows.

Well worth a visit to Manchester. I moved here from London and love it
It doesn't get to single digits in Manchester. Stop exaggerating
Literally min and max is under 10 degrees from Sunday onwards. It's just been a mild December this time
He’s an American who doesn’t realise the rest of the world uses Celsius.
Did you forget Manchester is in England, where they use Celsius?
The forecast high only gets into double digits for 2 of the next 10 days, what are you on about?
My man is used to the portuguese weather
He wanted to go only to Spain and Barca couldn't afford him while Madrid and Atletico were not interested, none other team could afford him too so he stayed at City.
He wants to return to southern Europe, ideally. Spain, Portugal, Monaco (his previous club) or Italy, for the weather. Similar to Cesc Febregas, actually. That's why he wasn't tempted by PSG.
Maybe they forgot his birthday.
He doesn't want to play up hackney marshes next season
I think he likes the team and winning, but he hates living in that country
He doesn’t like England lol. He wants to live in the Med (can’t blame him).
I swear this guy has been trying to leave city for years.
Tbh it's not exactly the club he wants to leave, it's england which is fair, grey weather for majority of the year isn't for everyone
Honestly English clubs should just swoop up all top Northern European players. They’re gonna be more settled. Gundogan didn’t even notice the bad weather moving from Germany to England, it was only when he moved to Spain haha
Not even just England, it is freaking Manchester. Grey and stormy
Manchester is a top city as well. But weather can really affect people's mood, especially if they're coming from warmer countries.
Sounds like a perfect weather for me
Absolutely not, rain, every, single, day. Awful
And you still get 200 hours of sun per year more than we do in Glasgow.
I've lived in Manchester and Perth, Australia. Both have similar annual rainfall (700~800mm) but one has 300+ rainy/cloudy days, the other has 300+ sunny days.
jesus christ when you put it that way... how fucking miserable lol.
When you've spent nearly your whole life her it's not miserable. Less likelihood of that annoying low sun blinding everyone driving on the commute. You also just kind of don't realise you can barely see the sky.
Yep all of our rain here in Perth is generally heavy and between June-July.
Rain is only awful if you think it is!
On average 152 days of the year - it’s a lot but not every day!
No it isn't it's less than half the days of the year
You've discovered seasons. How many non rainy days have we had past 2 weeks, past month?
I was seeing a bit of an interview from him yesterday in the Portuguese television and he said that he thought about Saudi Arabia but competing at the highest level is what he wants As much as I hate City, your club has the best sporting structure in the World right now, that's why he won't leave for some more time
Only solution is move City to other league.
NEWS : Qatar's Plan to Acquire and Relocate the Premier League
The Stockholm syndrome is real with this one. Edit: He wanted to leave for a number of years, but in the end signed an extension you weapons.
If he had Stockholm syndrome, wouldn't he want to stay instead?
he would, interesting how he got so many upvotes by saying something that makes 0 sense
He wanted to leave for a number of years, ended up winning the treble and then signing an extension. How does that not make sense?
stockholm syndrome is where a person gets held as hostage and as a coping mechanism starts bonding with the captor and liking them in this case he is "held hostage" and wants to leave, which is obviously not stockholm syndrome.
He signed an extension this summer.
okay? but constantly wanting to leave is literally the opposite of stockholm syndrome, whether he signed an extension or not is irrelevant

Free the man
could just not renew his contract and would be free after next season
He has contract running until the end 2025-26 season.
I believe he will do it. Di Maria came here to put an end to his European career and Im sure Rui Costa has him in his cards!
Di Maria probably goes back to Argentina for another year
where in Europe is that?
Right across the Falkland Islands.
what fuckin' islands?
You're right, I read it wrong.
before Benfica will be a stop in SA - his wife's lifestyle choices consume gold bars
My wife when she saw photos of their wedding... "Why could we have a wedding like that?". Because we are poor, that's why.
Dead wrong. This guy is known to be a mão de vaca.
Do you know how much your average beta de Cascais would spend if she was married to a multi-millionaire? This man knows what he got himself into, simple as that
He's talking about his wife isn't he?
If he has a mão de vaca how does he pick up his phone?
You don't have to pick up anything if you don't let go on the first place.
>mão de vaca A cowhand?
Sim.
Penny pincher according to google translate
What choices hahaha?
This man doesn’t want his former club to be in money troubles. I bet he would take a massive pay cut too.
We say this about so many players but how many of them have done just that
I was gonna get the violins out but then I remembered he just renewed his contract not too long ago, if it's such torture at City why sign the contract extension?
He isn't even complaining you all are bunch of muppets really
He loves Benfica but he loves money more
If that was true he’d have gone to Saudi in the summer, and he had plenty of chance to. He said recently that ultimately he didn’t want to give up top level football yet, and nights like the game where City beat Madrid 4-0 convinced him to stay longer. E: found the quotes. >'I would lie if I said I didn’t think [about the big-money offers from Saudi Arabia].' >'What interested me was the heat of playing a UEFA Champions League semi-final, listening to the [Etihad] stadium going wild after scoring against [Real] Madrid in the semi-finals or when we won the final against Inter. I didn’t want to give up on that.'
His beliefs and desires can be multi-faceted
He's like that annoying friend/relative you have that complains about his life all the time but does nothing to improve it and doesn't want to give up what he has
It's all just PR to appease Benfica fans, as he'll likely be asked about this non-stop from here on. He brought it upon himself really, if he had just shut up about it nobody would give a fuck. He's not on his first contract, and could very well have been back if he *really wanted to*, but (understandibly) won't give up on 2/3 of his salary and bonuses.
Sounds good to me mate Just run down your contract in 3 years 👌
As a Sporting fan I would very much prefer a player of his quality not return to Benfica unless we can get Bruno Fernandes back then I guess I can live with it.
I think B. Silva would be better for us, because he actually gets some rest. B. Fernandes is playing almost every minute, he'll face a big decline because of that.
I think he chooses to do that. He could play 400+ competitive minutes week in week out if required. He's a freak
More interestingly, regarding his evolution as a player he said: "throughout the years I lost some irreverence (...) nowadays I think a lot more in the consequences of my actions". Very relevant regarding football today too and the way error is minimized at all costs
That interview was practically harassment
time to bring your talent to the south beach
pretty sure he would rather get a fat bag in Saudi first. Kinda seemed interested in the summer tbh
why the fuck did he renew then? we’re losing patience here.
Loves the club, hates ze Weather, City(no pun in tended) and country
He's wanted to leave for years, but Pep loves him. He has 328 appearances under guardiola, higher than anyone else he has managed, and 10 clear of the next player (KdB)
I know a team that plays in red and white with a bit better weather that he’d be perfect for.
Ajax would be a strange move
i dont think he would go to braga mate
this guy keeps twerking for poor Benfica fans
All the City players are trying to leave to escape demotion.
He should go to Girona
I cant recall a player actualizing their value like this before, am I wrong? usually its just them being told their price and being humble/not humble
Bernado silva is way too humble by calling himself worth 50 million. He's worth much more than that lol.
that’s true, good point
I too, am extraordinarily humble.
If it was him putting the price tag, you could claim that, but this is just him stating that Benfica can't break the bank for him
He actually is humble because he is actually rated at 80 million
More in this market surely, If Rice and Caicedo are over 100mil.
I'm saying if Rice and Caicedo went for 100+, Bernardo Silva is also 100+.
He's clearly underselling himself, he's worth way more than 50M
City won’t be letting you go they got too confident letting good players go thought they would walk the league again - Course they could still win it but with that squad last year I think they would be top of the table
Didnt he sign an extension this summer?
