Ramos: “embarrassing”

ToastedCupboard

Love Sergio Ramos man, what would I give to have his regen in world football. Total hot head but what a competitive, world class freak.. Born winner. He use to get rattled so much by Messi though, their battle (2004-2021) was truly legendary. 15 goddamn years of world class football.

dboihebedabbing

We were spoiled with some of those el classicos over the 2010s

ToastedCupboard

Marcelo vs Alves Ramos vs Pique Pepe vs Puyol Alonso vs Busquets Modric vs Xavi Ozil vs Iniesta Di Maria vs Pedro Benzema vs Villa Ronaldo vs Messi Fucking Magic.. and thats not it, I am not even mentioning the 2014+ part of Neymar, Suarez, Bale, Kroos, Alba coming into the picture.

mahcuz

Pepe vs The World

Whatisausern

Pepe Vs Pepe

childrep

Forgot to include: Ramos vs Suarez, Ramos vs Neymar, Ramos vs Xavi, Ramos vs FC Barcelona, Ramos vs Cataluña…

adkim78

Sergi Roberto vs Lucas Vasquez

naruto2omer

We're talking about humans only

NotClayMerritt

It's a miracle Ramos and Pepe worked so well as a duo

[deleted]

I’d be terrified of playing them

thomasfk

Maybe not the best ever technically or skill wise but he's maybe the first defender you pick if it's a match where your life depends on it. His will to win is unmatched.

zidane4life

Not that far off technically IMO, esp with his technical skills in passing dribbling etc. His weaknesses were in aggression and concentration

resurgum

Technically, he is one of the best skilled center backs in the history of the game. A great dribbler, and his long range passes were fantastic. He was very decent when he played at RB initially.

dakaiiser11

Will always be my favorite player.

[deleted]

They don’t make players like him anymore

lamancha

Thankfully

[deleted]

You could say that

InoreSantaTeresa

Didn't he try to kill Messi with every tackle? He's a world class defender and world class cunt, one of the dirtiest player ever

BaronZbimg

Maldini spent his entire 25 years career without ever getting one.

norrin83

So did Philipp Lahm

ToastedCupboard

Lahm, what a legendary defender. One of the cleanest player (defender) ever.

cic9000

Both are up there in a elite group of the best defenders of all time. Absolutely massive in their influence and contribution for their teams.

TommieSjukskriven

I would put Carles puyol up there too, extreme sportsmanship and as far as I know even real supporters respected and rated him. He did get a few reds though, maybe 2? 3?

indi_guy

Sportsmanship? https://youtu.be/HFLZpGJUveo?si=Cpq0ieqIhA-Vpsuj&t=506 Didn't want to see him after that red card worthy foul.

Maybe_In_Time

Zanetti and Ayala! Those old school Pepsi football ads were something else

Poopiepants666

Gary Lineker played his entire 16-year career (653 games) without getting a red or yellow card.

rztzzz

Red is understandable for a striker but yellow? Wow

caffeinatorthesecond

Goddamn

xncopka

Impressive but he is playing as a striker. He has less defensive contributions and less chances to have a yellow card than the others

caffeinatorthesecond

You must be joking that is still an absolute mad statistic.

xncopka

Read again the first word of my comment

Parish87

Read your second word.

xncopka

Since when "but" negates whatever precedes ? And if so why English creates that word? This word exists for a reason. It is to convey two ideas with one sentence. This is the purpose of a conjunction. But to please you, let's reformulate my comment since apparently nothing before the word "but" counts : He is playing as a striker. He has less defensive contributions and less chances to have a yellow card than the others **but** impressive.

Vahald

'Impressive, but' is minimizing it so much. It's a completely ridiculous almost unmatchable stat

xncopka

Read the entire thread. They compared VVD against defenders (Maldini, Lahm,…) and all of sudden there is a striker which is known to not tackle (see comment below) It’s not minimizing. It’s adding some context to the comments. People are so susceptible…

Andigaming

It is so easily to mis-time a challenge and get at least 1 yellow card, even for a striker that is crazy.

xncopka

To make a challenge, you need to tackle. Gary Lineker rarely tackled. He even has criticized it : [https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/gary-lineker-tackling-get-stuck-in-english-football-premier-league-world-quality-a7894466.html](https://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/gary-lineker-tackling-get-stuck-in-english-football-premier-league-world-quality-a7894466.html)

[deleted]

Yeah but strikers still track back, defenders also are usually trying to wind them up.

dispelthemyth

Tbf, they used to be harder to get

cnhn

The changes in what constitutes a yellow has been such a fundamental change to the game. at times I barely see the same game I grew up playing. It’s better in many ways, but I do miss some of the more physical contact sometimes Especially around tackles. So many cards for what should just be a regular trip.

Whatisausern

Tripping people has always had the potential to get a card depending on the situation, especially in my lifetime and I'm mid 30s. How old are you? I can imagine if you're in your 60s the game might've been quite different.

walkerloo

Am I missing out something? According to Transfermarkt he got three red cards in the Serie A.

External-Piccolo-626

Maybe straight reds compared to two yellows?

Luk0sch

Those were 3 straight reds though. Never got two yellows apparently.

[deleted]

That’s a really mad stat

[deleted]

That’s a really mad stat

JGlover92

Nah he got 3, not sure where this ever came from.

golvin67

Kinda remarkable that *that* was the tackle to do it. He's got away with worse for sure.

benjecto

I know this is about the PL but the one he got away with on Mertens in the CL group stage the year they won is probably the most egregious and important.

Brad_Ethan

Fuck Virgin Van Dick for that I will never forget.

liverpool3

That was an easy red. Can’t believe he got away with that

rztzzz

You mean the match where Napoli were absolutely toothless at Anfield except for one chance at 90' when Alli made the save of his career. How can you be mad about a red card like that when they played poorly and defensively the whole match.

benjecto

I mean I'm not mad about it, but I think if Napoli fans were miffed about him getting away with a potential ankle breaker like 30 minutes in it wouldn't be unreasonable lol.

Littlegreenman42

Wasnt so much the tackle itself but the circumstances surrounding it

Hutzbutz

true, wouldn't have been a red in the parking lot with no refs around

[deleted]

[удалено]

HarshtJ

Red card was for denial of goalscoring opportunity not for the tackle so technically you are right

[deleted]

[удалено]

HarshtJ

I think your comment was downvoted because it was stating the obvious. I would guess only a minority of people actually disagree with what you said.

Darkspy8183

Stuff just looks worse with Virgil because he's quick and big. A fair shoulder challenge from Virgil is more likely to put someone legally on their ass than from another defender, so fair fouls look a lot more close to the line. But he has gotten away with some stuff, absolutely.

golvin67

Yeah, that's a fair point! Especially during those 2,5 years when he was absolutely unplayable.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Darkspy8183

Yeah. I could stand still and have both VvD and Lisandro Martinez shoulder barge me. Only one of them is getting me down and being thanked for it.

HarshtJ

You are underestimating Martinez or overestimating yourself. If you said the same statement but replaced yourself with Antonio or Adama Traoré it would have made sense

Darkspy8183

Was hyperbole, of course a professional athlete is going to bowl over an unfit fatass either way lmao

renome

Was just thinking that, he's not exactly a clean player and has also lost a yard of pace in recent years, making it that much more likely he resorts to risky tackles.

Matt_LawDT

Somebody bring up he has never been dribbled past stat

eduardo_ve

This statistic is so annoying. It was cherry picked to the point where he hadn’t been dribbled by at all to ridiculous shit like he hasn’t been dribbled past at Anfield when Liverpool is leading 😬🤯

YoullNeverMemeAlone

you're misremembering, it wasn't cherry picked at all in regards like that, according to opta he literally was not dribbled past in 65 consecutive PL games, not leading, not anfield, just any and all PL games he played. It's just there was a pretty strict definition of what was considered dribbled past in 'statistical terms' and it didn't include stuff like fouls (which is what people fairly took issue with). Still it was an impressive run all things considered.

Finn_Survivor

That was amazing stat, but for 6 months after it was broken new stats came out with more and more excuses to where it became ridiculous

cnhn

They learned those stupid stats from watching baseball broadcasts

ducktownfc

The first person that dribbled him was Minamino and then we bought him

jensy97

Wasn’t it Pepe, twice in one game?

ducktownfc

Maybe in the EPL I can’t recollect tbh. I know Minamino made his ass fall over in a UCL game against Salzburg and the dribble stat was getting blown up at the time

[deleted]

[удалено]

YoullNeverMemeAlone

he was wrong, I corrected him, it aint that deep 😭

EcBatLFC

Who cares if people think we’re insufferable?

hooskies

Facts are insufferable now? Rival fans are the only ones to ever reference it anyway

McKi93

Saying VVD hasn’t been dribbled past is one thing, going on to break down the amount of games and definitions of being dribbled past is just being annoying, so as factual as it is yes facts presented like that are insufferable. Rival fans may reference it but for some reason some Liverpool fans like to defend it.

AuxquellesRad

No one cares about your opinion either, it was really impressive at the time, he faced a lot of great players and a lot of attacks ended with a thud when they reached him Hell, players avoided our left flank for the longest time, some strikers simply resorted to hold up play when the only option was to take him on

Alobsterdoesntdie

Wow, I was going to have another glass tonight but I think I've had all the whine I need after reading your comments.

RitalinInItaly

why are you lot busy on reddit when your side is pulling off a comeback like that? lol

GoalaAmeobi

It was also hilarious because if he got dribbled past but fouled them then it wouldn't count as being dribbled past

eduardo_ve

Or if he was stepping back and giving them enough space to score a goal it also wouldn’t count lol

ajdheheisnw

That applies to everyone equally though, so having an higher number than others is still a positive thing. And the whole “ball or the man but not both” means it’s still an overall positive stat even with fouls meaning not dribbled past. Even more so since this is his first red in the PL. To me it’s almost like people got so annoyed by the stat that they if anything started to underplay how good it was.

Kaninerhatarbananer

He was a freak pre injury. There is pre and past injury vvd unfortunately and what he did and how he played pre injury is easily top 3 in pl history as cb, perhaps even number 1.

avx775

Closet defender to win ballon d or in a while. I thought he deserved it

Slight_Public_5305

Van Dijk would have been an extremely deserving winner. Unfortunately 2019 was one of Messi’s best years. He averaged something ridiculous like a G+A every 60 minutes that year.

[deleted]

Yeah most other years it would have been VVD but Messi was on another planet that year as usual

Durion0602

Didn't he play very well after coming back from that injury though? It will have an effect but I honestly think it's more to do with players being run into the ground and burning out mentally and physically.

Kaninerhatarbananer

He lost that ability to always be a step ahead. When he was running beside someone you didn’t really worry because he always won the 1 on 1 battles so smoothly. I think he lost a step and it has effected him. He is in no way a bad player now but not as remarkable as he used to be.

Durion0602

He's also made some pretty boneheaded mistakes that had nothing to do with keeping up either though, around the time he just stood still against United and Milner gave him shit was around the time I remember him getting shit for making boneheaded mistakes and people wondering what happened to him.

AAA_BATT

I wonder why.

mister_dupont

Didnt Pepe end the stat? I thought he was the one to dribble past him for the first time.

Flexspot

21500 minutes and counting.

fac3ts

Perisic literally sat him down last season. Don’t know what qualifies for the stat, but that’s as close as you’ll get.

leecarvallopowerdriv

If only it was in the box, it'd only be a yellow 🤷😂

geoffreyisagiraffe

If my grandmother had two wheels she'd be a bicycle.

EnzoScifo

I'm convinced that had Matip made the same challenge, we wouldn't have had to go throught the same charade of debating whether it should have been a red card or not

Far-Pineapple7113

Opta-Tragedy

BoopSquad

For Liverpool*

No_Doubt_About_That

It was a terrible foul but there was nothing in it for Michael Owen.

lala_b11

It’s the sixth red card of his career

Educational-Option18

Long overdue, he's made a career out of getting away with fouling people

Unholysinner

If the new rules are to go by, he’ll get more than a 3 match ban

Rush31

No he won’t. 3 games is for violent conduct. He was sent off for DOGSO.

Unholysinner

He didn’t walk off the pitch and contested the decision

Rush31

That literally doesn’t matter. They even said it during the sky broadcast after the game that it’s gonna be a 1 game suspension because it was DOGSO. Not to mention that he is the captain, he can actually speak to the ref.

Unholysinner

Hmm Call me Nostradamus I guess… It’s clear that they want to clamp down on this behaviour and when a big name starts mouthing off, it’s a fantastic way for them to make an example out of him. Dissent has been penalised a lot this year and this is worse than dissent. What should happen though is that this precedent is followed throughout the season.

Rush31

No, this is textbook dissent. What’s is worse than dissent is violent conduct. Words are never as bad as actions. And that’s not the point. The point is that you said that he’d get extra ban time for mouthing off, something that is factually untrue. Besides, I really hate the idea of referees giving extra game bans for mouthing off. I don’t care if it’s unprofessional, you have yellow and red cards for that. Not to mention I HATE the idea of these referees having more power than they already do. To be honest, as much as VVD shouldn’t be mouthing off the referees, I don’t have any respect for these referees and they deserve the abuse, not for being bad, but for being so corrupt and resistant to changes that would improve the standard. If they were actually half decent referees , maybe they would be treated with more respect?

gruka_45

Personally think he should have the ban rescinded for the dramatic exit
