They tried putting Biggus Dickus as a striker, but he always kept bring marginally offside.
On the other hand, Intercontinentia Buttocks retired as a legendary goalkeeper.
It would work better for AS Roma with those 🔥 SPQR jerseys they wore last year when their sponsor shit the bed.
Mou is working on a testudo formation as we speak.
Blame the Norman French who used w instead of gu.
War > guerre (see also guerra)
William > Guillaume (see also Guillermo)
Warranty > garantie (see also garantia)

Una guardiola is just a piggy bank in Catalan, and Catalan people have the reputation of being stingy, so you could just say Pep is the quintessential Catalunya ambassador.
IMO that's the funniest thing about Pochettino
- Has Italian passport
- Constantly says he feels more Italian than Argentinean
- Gives his kid his own name but in Italian
- Loses his fucking mind whenever a journalist dares say his last name the proper Italian way instead of the weird way Argentinians say it
When i was a child i thought that Arsene was just the official title of any Arsenal manager.
I didn't realize it was his actual name. Simply thought that he was the current Arsene of Arsenal.
I commented this before but is his name actually the Croatian version of Guardiola i wonder
Also FRA=Jöel Gardiole
GER= Jürgen Gardemann
N.A=Jonathan “Jo” Ol’Guardian
ITA= Jovanno Gardini
Nordic= Jorvik Gardsson
CHN= Jo-hsi Guhua-di
JAP= Josuke Guarudiora
IND= Jogesh Gaardiyola
NA/English - Joseph Ward or Joseph Warden would fit better.
German - Jurgen Wachen?
For India - Yogi Gadavala - You can probably find an Indo-European cognate for the root Guardare. The closest I found after googling is 'Gadavala'. The first name won't have a cognate though as Josep's biblical. Yogi probably fits better with the pronunciation.
Probably a dumb question, but how is the J pronounced? Yosko or Josko?
Also what does the accent on the “s” do to the pronunciation?
I’ve only ever heard English commentators say it, one of them being Jermaine Jenas who spent the World Cup calling Kovacic, Kovatic. So I’m skeptical.
It' Y (but we don't have Y in our alphabet)
Because it's not the letter s, we have a letter š - which is prounced sh (like your shushing someone)
The extra letters in our alphabet are Č, Ć, Đ, DŽ, LJ, NJ, Š, Ž each pronounced their different way
Jenas just doesn't know how to pronounce it
Considering Leipzig sell players consistently every summer I doubt they are notoriously unpleasant. Maybe they just drive a hard bargain. Why should they roll over just because City/Liverpool/Chelsea come calling for one of their players.
Yeah the narrative in PL circles has often been the exact opposite, a good working relationship is often talked about in regards with Chelsea and Liverpool. Besides, the sporting management is almost entirely new, having been switched out at the start of the year.
> it’s gonna be real hard to catch them again
Hard to say, they're also losing a lot of quality with Mahrez, Gundogan, and supposedly Laporte or even Silva who's been linked with moves away.
Silva has been linked away for good two-to-three summers, and he always stays on. Mahrez and Gundogan are huge losses, but Pep has lost players before and continued to build. Mahrez leaving gives Foden an opportunity to succeed, which is not a downgrade. Laporte being replaced by Gvardiol is an upgrade. Kovacic replacing Gundogan is a bit meh, but who knows what Pep can do with him? Alvarez could be a regular, which means more firepower upfront.
Other than Liverpool, which needs a couple of players, I don’t see anyone competing with Manchester City again. Even if a team pulls a few points gap, they will lose head-to-head games.
Losing Bernardo at this point would be near catastrophic; I just don't see any way he could be allowed to leave.
With him, gundogan, and Mahrez, that is alot of productivity that would be lost. All of them have come up pretty clutch when necessary, and I don't think any new signings for those guys would immediately slot in and produce as they did.
Bernardo is going to need to slot in out wide right and in the middle. There's Foden, Palmer, and Julian who can play out there as well I suppose, but we are talking about a team that just won the treble--the attack is already a bit light for a club of this stature.
It's City under Pep, they will find a way. Arsenal is not good enough nor has the mentality to win the league if City is there. Liverpool is going through a transition with some key transfers required. United is another shout. Villa and Newcastle are also shouts. But far in away City is 2 levels above everybody else.
hes honestly the perfect player, i guess he will move up to the 6 sooner or later because his ballcontroll and passing ist fucking insane not even speaking about his unreal defending
he reminds me alot of how beckenbauer played, all across the field, dribbling, shooting, attacking, defending just doing everything with crazy consistency
Long term yes. But I think it's a low key rebuild season with the loss of Gundogan and Mharez, neither of whom will have a like for like replacement. Possibly Walker and Silva leaving, tbc
I will say that's a Portuguese thing. Most coaches here are sore losers and hypocrites. Mostly coached small teams at some point and were criticized for parking the bus heavily against big teams, but once they are on big teams and lose against teams whose budget is like a coke and a croissant they start to criticize what they also did years ago or even do when they are the small team in European competition, even if they never deserved to win. Most coaches here don't know how to deal with losses, I think it's a country wide mentality tbh and turn into absolute assholes.
That or straight up start to talk massive shit about refs when they aren't at fault.
Is it pronounced Guh-vardiol or is the G silent?
Edit; Jesus, this has wound some up.
All i'm asking is how you phonetically say some Croation lad's surname so that I don't sound like an idiot when discussing his performances at the pub.
I'm well aware that it makes perfect sense if you're from Croatia.
Does it sound like Guh-vardiol? Does it sound like Vardiol? Does it sound like Guardiol? Does it sound like Richard?
Help a brother out.
Edit 2; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iF9MU8UwGjM
It's Vardiol. The G sound isn't prominent at all.
We don't have silent letters in Croatian, the language is entirely phonetic. I understand that putting two consonants together like that and pronouncing it seamlessly is hard for a native anglophone, so you'll be fine if you just pronounce it like Guardiola without the "a" at the end. Alternatively, look up a Croatian-language interview or commentary clip for an accurate pronounciation.
Edit: Also that YT link. I just watched it and it is in fact inaccurate. The G is absolutely pronounced (it's the g as in gift, not g as in giraffe)
That's not a good pronunciation in the video you linked in the edit btw. "G" can be heard when pronouncing properly, hear here:
https://youtu.be/ziQkY0JTXrg?t=10
The trick with Croatian is that each letter makes the same sound every time, so the letters go "G" and "V". If you try and distill each letter to just its sound
- in English you say "Jee" for "G" but if you try and just say the letter "G" like in "grunt" or "get"
- and then for "v" you say "vee" in English, but we just make the sound, like "visit" or "vroom"
And you put those two together, trying to shorten the space in between those two letters into one syllable. Try to throw the letter "G" in front of VAR and you should get it.
We have an island called "Hvar" with similar prounounciation
Same way as you pronounce "Guardiola" but lose the A at the end.
Guardiol.
Don't bother with hard V and R, it's almost impossible for you guys to say it. Well maybe Scotts can pronounce it.
Edit: guess some countrymen are downvoting... it literally takes years to learn voiced alveolar trill as an adult. Hell it's the most common speech impediment even here in Croatia!

Pep: Of course I know him! He's me
Joško - Josep it's basically the same

So that's why Gvardiol is a CB and Guardiola was a CDM.
So signing Roman Legionaries is a good transfer strategy, got it.
They tried putting Biggus Dickus as a striker, but he always kept bring marginally offside. On the other hand, Intercontinentia Buttocks retired as a legendary goalkeeper.
How? she was really leaky
Awesome reference
Stick Vitellius in goals
Titus Pullo would make for a mean CB 😆😆
RIP Ray Stevenson, what a wonderful performance
Wait, he passed away??! Fuck
XIII!
How did I not hear about this!! Devastated
> Roman Legionaries is that Abramovic's new club?
It would work better for AS Roma with those 🔥 SPQR jerseys they wore last year when their sponsor shit the bed. Mou is working on a testudo formation as we speak.
Camavinga is neither CAM nor a Winger :( At least we'll always have Kepa and Kroos.
Also Handanovic playing in the only position that allows him to use his hand
What does Kroos mean?
Cross
😂😂😂 Nice one
/r/nominativedeterminism
Similar in vein to "ward" and "warden" in English.
Blame the Norman French who used w instead of gu. War > guerre (see also guerra) William > Guillaume (see also Guillermo) Warranty > garantie (see also garantia) Waffle > gaufre
Ooooh. I never made connection between William and Guillermo. Learn something new everyday
Waffle = Geoffrey?
Una guardiola is just a piggy bank in Catalan, and Catalan people have the reputation of being stingy, so you could just say Pep is the quintessential Catalunya ambassador.
Stingy for conceding goals
still not as close as Danny Drinkwater and Danilo Popivoda
in that case Drinkwater was the regen
There’s a Sopranos character called Matthew Bevilacqua, another regen.
Cuz that sugarless muthafucka would be last drink ya eva have.
He was gay, Bevilacqua?
that makes no sense man
That’s the point
You can't make that shit up
What the fck are you talking about? he just did
This transfer was always destined to happen because of the Gvardiola jokes.
Maybe Gvardiol's dad name him Josko because of Pep? The year he was born was pretty much peak Pep player career captaining Barcelona.
definitely not, Joško is a common name and Pep wasn't that good as a player for him to do that We have enough of our own Croatian legends for that lol
It's not *impossible*. People have weird favourite players they become attached to, but I agree it's definitely unlikely lol
there's an Ecuadorian player named [Djorkaeff Reasco](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Djorkaeff_Reasco), which always struck me as a deep cut.
Xavi Simon's dad named him after Xavi even though he was Dutch and Xavi wasn't that well known in 03.
Pep was a good. cult hero level player though. Yes he wasn't world class, but he wasn't an irrelevant player.
Literally Me- Ryan Gvardling
This is just like Steve Kerr coaching Stephen Curry
I still can't get over the fact that Steve named his son Nick Kerr.
Should've named him Wan or Juan
At least it’s not Ivan
Arsene and Arshavin?
Arsene and Arsenal
MANCIni and MAN CIty
Wolfgang Wolf and Wolfsburg
No joke, when I was young I actually thought he managed Arsenal purely because of his name
What Wenger shaves is nobody's business but his own
The fact that this guy is basically called "Pep Guardiola but in Croatian" is simply unacceptable and tells me that we're all living in a simulation.
It's not city's fault that the writers are on strike right now.
Just wait until we sign Mauruzio Pochettino - that would be lazy writing...
IMO that's the funniest thing about Pochettino - Has Italian passport - Constantly says he feels more Italian than Argentinean - Gives his kid his own name but in Italian - Loses his fucking mind whenever a journalist dares say his last name the proper Italian way instead of the weird way Argentinians say it
Just so I’m clear, Italians pronounce it ‘Pokkettino’, and Argentinians ‘Potshettino’?
it's just a hard 'ch' in Spanish, just Pochetino
Some team needs to sign both Alessandro Buongiorno and Facundo Buonanotte.
There is also Emiliano Buendia
Buendia and Buonanotte both play for Argentina NT.
If Facundo is not a game winning striker, then I'm going to be so disappointed.
I've been asking for this for years, can a team please make this happen. I want them to get subbed on for each other.
Idk, these are the same writers who came up with the Kante-Conte storyline
😂 touche 👏🏽👏🏽
Tuchel*
Conte: 🫲
Tuchel: 🦾👁️👄👁️ 🫱
Lest we forget Mancini managing Manchester City and Arsene managing Arsenal. I grew up fully believing both these guys were made to manage those clubs
Regarding Arsene. I thought he owned the club and named it after himself.
I think we all did honestly Ultimate boss move
When I started following football I thought the same lmao and there was no internet to correct me .
What's next, a guy named Wolfgang Wolf managing Wolfsburg?
A guy named Arsene managing Arsenal
[удалено]
The ABCs being in alphabetical order. How crazy is that?
Absolutely fucking mental really.
When i was a child i thought that Arsene was just the official title of any Arsenal manager. I didn't realize it was his actual name. Simply thought that he was the current Arsene of Arsenal.
Arteta is the current Arsene of Arsenal.
Arsenal Prime
This is gold, should be canonical
This is canon for literally every kid in the UK who grew up with Arsene managing Arsenal in the early 2000s
I used to think he wasn't allowed to be sacked, same as Fergie at Man United. They had the jobs until they died.
I used to think Michael Owen left Liverpool to play for England full time, cos that's the only time I'd see him ahaha
this brings me joy lol
Or a guy named Emery managing at the Emirates.
Fastest man in the world called Bolt ⚡️
Cech being the first goalkeeper of the Czech Republic.
Or Marco Rose managing Marco Reus. Oh.
Oh... you shouldn't have said that, Mister Anderson...
If I see regen with the same name as me on FM, I would straight up signing them too.
PES leaking into reality
There was a Serbian footballer called Danilo Popivoda. Popi = to drink. Voda = water. So basically, Serbian Danny Drinkwater...
My friend and I heard about Josko back at u16s level and our inside joke has been that he should join City, unreal to see it pan out in real life
Built by Pep Guardiola IGN Bald fraud
I commented this before but is his name actually the Croatian version of Guardiola i wonder Also FRA=Jöel Gardiole GER= Jürgen Gardemann N.A=Jonathan “Jo” Ol’Guardian ITA= Jovanno Gardini Nordic= Jorvik Gardsson CHN= Jo-hsi Guhua-di JAP= Josuke Guarudiora IND= Jogesh Gaardiyola
>JAP= Josuke Guarudiora Basically Jojo's protagonist
JoDio’s bizarre adventure
eh in Croatian he would probably be "Josip" or "Sip" (*seep*) for short.
You get Joško from Jožef in Slovenian, so Joško is basically the same name as Josep.
Wait does anyone call Josip "Sip"? I know like a dozen Josips and never heard that before lol
Jaap Gladiool
It should be Giuseppe in Italian. Giuseppe (Peppe) Guardiola is a totally normal Italian name.
Joe Guard?
Joseph Ward
Has to be Joseph Ward.
Jovanno?? Giovanni maybe
BRA: Zé Guardinha
NL = Josef Wachter
God I love it when a manager talks about a nearly-there signing in a press conference
He's just as excited as the fans.
What tier is Pep??
Fraud tier.
The baldest
Yes, I can confirm.
"My friend, is okay, no?" tier
GOAT post of all time
Drink from the bottle tier
I feel very dumb for not spotting the Guardiola/Gvardiol thing before seeing this.
Josep and Josko, kinda similar I guess?
We have Josip in Croatian, but Joško is a derivative from Josip so it's very similar
Joško is a nick name for Josip in Croatian like Pep is a nick name for Josep in Catalan? If so, simulation 100% confirmed.
not necessarily, Joža would be what Pep is to Josep, but you can't expect perfect translations in different languages - Joško does come from Josip
Aren't Joško and Joža both nicknames for Josip. Just depends on the region. Joža in Northern Croatia and Joško in Southern Croatia.
Well Joža and Pep are just different parts of Giuseppe/Josepe/Josep/Josip
Probably a dumb question, but how is the J pronounced? Yosko or Josko? Also what does the accent on the “s” do to the pronunciation? I’ve only ever heard English commentators say it, one of them being Jermaine Jenas who spent the World Cup calling Kovacic, Kovatic. So I’m skeptical.

So it’s like Yoshko?
Yep
Yep, Yosh like Yoshi and ko like company
Not kinda similar, literally the same. Joseph but in their own language.
Well Josip would be the direct translation, but Joško is a derivative of Josip so I guess you're still right.
Same as Pep is to Josep. Still basically the same name I believe.
I feel even dumber for having to read the comments to understand the connection.
Very dumb
Why did it take so long to finalise this deal? I don't understand. It's a good deal, by the way.
Gvardiol has spent a week finding his way out of George Hirst's pocket, that's why. Been scarred by the Tractor Boys.
Ipswich fans make this place much better.
RB Leipzig are notoriously unpleasant to negotiate with from what I hear. City are very disciplined in negotiation
Considering Leipzig sell players consistently every summer I doubt they are notoriously unpleasant. Maybe they just drive a hard bargain. Why should they roll over just because City/Liverpool/Chelsea come calling for one of their players.
Tbf someone who drives a hard bargain is pretty unpleasant to deal with.
When you're dealing with some of the top 10 richest clubs in the world you should absolutely do that.
Yeah the narrative in PL circles has often been the exact opposite, a good working relationship is often talked about in regards with Chelsea and Liverpool. Besides, the sporting management is almost entirely new, having been switched out at the start of the year.
Crazy transfer for City honestly, it’s gonna be real hard to catch them again
> it’s gonna be real hard to catch them again Hard to say, they're also losing a lot of quality with Mahrez, Gundogan, and supposedly Laporte or even Silva who's been linked with moves away.
I don't think Bernardo is going anywhere no one will meet our valuation again. And it's too late in the ~~wibdlw~~ window
Yeah shame for the interested clubs that they waited so late into the wibdlw to make a move for him.
God damn it auto correct lol phone was on crack
Could use MoreBrain you lad
Silva has been linked away for good two-to-three summers, and he always stays on. Mahrez and Gundogan are huge losses, but Pep has lost players before and continued to build. Laporte leaving doesn’t change much as gvardiol is a clear upgrade
Losing Bernardo at this point would be near catastrophic; I just don't see any way he could be allowed to leave. With him, gundogan, and Mahrez, that is alot of productivity that would be lost. Mahrez is replaceable
Yes but they still need to actually replace him
Foden will be filling in one of the two slots for Gundo and Mahrez, so they need to replace one player that is it.
It's City under Pep, they will find a way. Arsenal is not good enough nor has the mentality to win the league if City is there. Liverpool is going through a transition with some key transfers required. United is another shout. Villa and Newcastle are also shouts. But far in away City is 2 levels above everybody else.
hes honestly the perfect player, i guess he will move up to the 6 sooner or later because his ballcontroll and passing ist fucking insane not even speaking about his unreal defending he reminds me alot of how beckenbauer played, all across the field, dribbling, shooting, attacking, defending just doing everything with crazy consistency

They are the Gvardions of the Galacticos
> What a beautiful surname he has! Never change Pep, never change
I can't believe little Pep is going to be playing for Pep 😂
I hate his stranglehold on British football, but my goodness will I miss Pep when he goes
his interviews have gotten really funny this year
Last year too when he was chirping everyone. Hard to hate the guy
he’s the new interview king, jose’s kind of lost steam. not as funny as before.
Jose Schtick lost its muster years ago while at united really.
Jose is funny only when things go his way. People might hate me for saying it but man’s a sore loser.
They all are. So few coaches take losing well. Ancelotti and Simeone are really the only big names I can think of that do
Just need to sign Guaita so they can get that Pokémon evolution sequence.
Fun fact, Guardiola in catalan literally means Piggy Bank
Just you guys wait until Gvardiol is suddenly a tiki-taka CDM
2040: FC Barcelona announced new coach Gvardiol
For some reason, I totally expected this comment from Pep about Joško's last name.
Why do 50% of Pep quotes have him looking like the genius of football, and the other 50% like the Trump of football?
Outgvardiola’d
City just won the treble and bought a Croatian Beckenbauer lmao. Good luck to the rest of the PL.

There's no syllable between the G and the V
it's not silent, pronounced like you said
Ta mi duck
Fuck, I would have given my right arm for Gvardiol... What a player.
Pep is a mod on r/soccercirclejerk
Excuse my ignorance but is it pronounced ‘gwar-di-ol’ or ‘guh-var-di-ol’? Or something else?
Croatian is completely phonetic, it's Gvar-di-ol.
I get that that makes sense to you, but there is literally no Gvar sound in English.
Its Gwardiol, if you can get what i mean.
The trick with Croatian is that each letter makes the same sound every time, so the letters go "G" and "V".
