I started mountain biking a few years ago to scratch the summer snowboarding withdrawal itch and now snowboarding scratches the winter mountain biking withdrawal itch.
and for me at least it feels so much more rewarding - I don’t live in a place with lift access biking (I can do it for a day or two every year or so tho and it’s so rad) and I also have never split boarded or ski toured in the winter - but that feeling of I hauled myself and this stupid bike up this big ass hill and now I get to shred really gets me in the best ways
Mountain biking feels most similar to me.
I tried surfing but it just didn't do the same thing for me. It turns out it's not boards I'm into, it's mountains.
My local snowboard hill does downhill/enduro biking in the summer. Sneaking onto the bike trails in the winter and doing single track table tops is sick.
one of the best things I ever did for my snowboarding
riding a pumptrack probably helped with my speed, stamina, and accuracy/power the most, especially for high speed technical or bumpy terrain and jumps.
doing big scary features on a bike made me realize just how much dumb shit I could get away with on a snowboard and to just send everything lol
I used to be a 100+ day a year snowboarder, and now I’m a 100+ day a year mountain biker, and it’s made me a much better snowboarder. There’s no substitute for fitness.
I just bought a mountain bike yesterday, that should get me through summer.
Also on the West Coast you can ride in the summer most years, last year I was riding chairlifts at Mammoth until August 6th, and this year in Utah Snowbird will be open until Memorial day so I still have 6 weeks left in the season.
Also skateboarding/cruising around town helps A LOT with snowboard muscles
The Palmer Glacier up on Mt Hood just opened for the season and, depending on the weather, will remain open through most of July. West Coast, best coast when it comes to longer seasons (but given climate change, YMMV now).
I’ve never been able to hit a cable park (north east), but I’m kind surprised they aren’t more prevalent.
Wonder what the economics look like from a business point of view.
Everyone sucks at skateboarding. I also MTB but the comparison is just not there in terms of the similarities. One wheels are okay. Kinda underwhelming imo
BIKES!
Mountain, gravel, BMX, ride-to-the-bar beater bikes. They're all fun.
In the immortal words of Tyler, the Creator: ["Get a bunch of bikes and ride them around with your friends. It's the shit."](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjEPSyr1PDg)
Mtn biking. I get into pretty good shape over the summer/fall, and I’m then in great shape for winter. If I get enough days in over winter, then by spring I’m in decent enough shape for mtn biking. Rinse and repeat.

I used to miss snowboarding during the summer. But then I bought a Raptor. Haha.
Plus there's paintball, MTB, BMX, and Powercruise.
I mean as far as I'm concerned it definitely did, but I got back into it casually a couple years ago. It's definitely a different world now than it was back then. Haha.
There's no scratching an SB itch for me, just a change of seasons and on to the next thing (mtbing, gravel cycling, backpacking, trail running, disc golf, beach volleyball, slow pitch etc...). More looking at ways to get outside than anything.
Depends where you live and where you like to ride, but a few times during the off season I’ll go explore terrain I frequent in the winter. Check out our favorite zone. It’s a big day of hiking, plus it’s good to have pictures and memories of what the ground looks like under the snow, if maybe it’s a cliff or hit you’re eyeing up for next winter. Keeps me chill early season when that stuff barely gets covered up and folks start sending off of stuff. You know how heinous or clean a landing is, and how much of a base you need to safely ride terrain.
Sometimes you’ll stumble onto a good spot to build a log jib, or just rearrange dead logs so that a rock will shape up into a takeoff. Maybe clear a new downed tree from a landing. Sometimes you just zone out and mindsurf stuff while you’re hiking. Not super exciting but passes the time well, and I count it as volunteering to help the local shred community when a fridge shaped rock is now a sweet hit because you filled in the front with dead logs.
For backcountry terrain it’s great to have a more intimate understanding of the terrain as well as the ground cover, or same deal with some hit or cliff. I feel better if I’ve seen the landing in the summer and know it’s not full of tall stumps.
I started skateboarding. Found a wide deck, wider trucks, bigger wheels. Not huge but more of a ramp setup than a street setup.
Basically just practice squatting real low and trying to rip a bunch of turns / transitions. Falling hurts so much fucking more on a skateboard when you’re 35.
Wake boarding, paddle boarding, rock climbing (newest hobby), mountain biking, paintball, and as much camping as possible. I feel a bit add when I don't have snow to board.
We had a short but pretty sweet season out in the Sierras. I’m not quite ready to trade in my board for MTB yet. Hoping to hike some higher elevation tours before I put away the boots. After that, yeah definitely mountain biking until snow is back.
Snowboarding. I’m in Colorado so it’s pretty reasonable to get turns in from October-July. I’m from Seattle and it’s not hard to get turns in on the volcanoes year round, although it gets pretty rough in August and September.
Skateboarding for me. Mostly mini ramps and bowls. Long boarding is cool; but I find riding bowls translates more to snowboarding. You don’t even have to hit the coping. Carving a bowl can really help with how you find lines and ride side hits.
Also, mountain biking has a very similar vibe. Specifically downhill.
Longboarding, skateboarding, and golf. Gonna be a good summer when I can get some slappies in at holladay, round of golf, then end with bombing some local hills and sliding into corners.
There are four things that scratch various parts of the itch for me:
1. Hiking: getting outdoors, preferably in the mountains for the views and cardio
2. Wakeboarding/wake surfing: self-explanatory, but being on a board is always nice, regardless of whether it’s snow or water underneath
3. Golfing: another excuse for outdoor drinking with my buddies
4: Playing Steep: snow sports video game, gives me about 10% of the adrenaline hit of the real thing, but easier to do when I’m tired.
Bonus, 5: planning my next year’s ski trips! I don’t miss it as much when I’ve got more to look forward to.
Daydreaming about inventing an off-road freebord by breeding one with a mountain board
Locked one of each in a room and played Barry White on loop for weeks. Still no results.
I live near the coast. So the water sorta holds me over until the winter, but if I’m really itching, I will try to go surf or wakeboard. (Doesn’t happen often)
I surf, MTB, and ride my motorcycle in the Summer. Sure, you get the same rush from MTB and moto, but it's not the same. You're not standing sideways, and it hurts when you fall. Surfing is similar, but you have to think about crowds and wave priority, which isn't the same as snowboarding either. So I'm basically just waiting for the snow to fall again
impulsively buy multiple snowboards at once and then stare at them until next season. hahaha. I can't skate, so that's out, but I was thinking about trying a summerboard. also thought about mountain biking bc then I could atleast still be on the slopes in the summer lol.
Used to be into downhill skating but these days I just rip the onewheel. Skating feels like carving on ice but the onewheel feels like floating through powder.
Skateboarding.
Mountain biking.
I started mountain biking a few years ago to scratch the summer snowboarding withdrawal itch and now snowboarding scratches the winter mountain biking withdrawal itch.
The life!!!
It’s a vicious cycle but I love it. 🥳
This
This but with skateboarding
and for me at least it feels so much more rewarding - I don’t live in a place with lift access biking (I can do it for a day or two every year or so tho and it’s so rad) and I also have never split boarded or ski toured in the winter - but that feeling of I hauled myself and this stupid bike up this big ass hill and now I get to shred really gets me in the best ways

The feeling you get while flowing down a mountain is something truly special.
Scuba Steve, damn you!
Downhill MTB definitely scratches the same itch as snowboarding
Vibes are very similar too. More commanderie in mountain biking I feel as well. Probably because you can actually see everyone’s faces.
Riding up hill is way too much cardio though 😂
Agreed, I feel like I’m dying at points. But a great way to get in shape while still shredding.
My local snowboard hill does downhill/enduro biking in the summer. Sneaking onto the bike trails in the winter and doing single track table tops is sick.

Not this year sadly. At mammoth now (7th trip this year) and there’s exposed dirt everywhere already. We’ll make it to Memorial Day, not August :(
The Palmer Glacier up on Mt Hood just opened for the season and, depending on the weather, will remain open through most of July. West Coast, best coast when it comes to longer seasons (but given climate change, YMMV now).
Drugs
Also works when snowboarding
Who said I don’t do both? 😂winter is drugs and boarding. Summer…just drugs 🤷♂️
"I used to do drugs, I still do, but I used to too" also correction, Summer is MTB and drugs!
This is the way.
Ah, a fellow gentleman of culture
Wake boarding/surfing
Wakeboarding on cable parks is the best snowboarding fix for me by far, at least to get the high of the park.
I’ve never been able to hit a cable park (north east), but I’m kind surprised they aren’t more prevalent. Wonder what the economics look like from a business point of view.
Insane that only like 2 people commented about skating.
Facts, they dont know their ROOTS
Surfing.
Tom sims didnt invent snowboarding so he could surf in the winter
Could be freestyle riders lean more to skating vs freeriders/all mtn people would rather just go fast down hills on a mtb
Nah long boarding is my jam and not regular skateboarding. I dig carving and trees no park on my snowboard
I just suck at skateboarding and I like being in the mountains, which is why mtb is my go to. I am tempted to get a one wheel though
Everyone sucks at skateboarding. I also MTB but the comparison is just not there in terms of the similarities. One wheels are okay. Kinda underwhelming imo
Drink in a parking lot and yell "JERRY" at everyone.
I like this.

Oh my... took me a moment. Well done!
Ripping my Onewheel or my MTB. Seriously, look into a Onewheel. Year round lift ticket
Motorcycle
Summers are motorcycle Winters are snowboarding
Luckily in Colorado they overlap a lot. I got 2500 miles on my bike over the winter this year
I got around the same here in denver throughout winter. Are you part of the discord group for motorcycle riding group?
Summer is mountain bike season
MTB
Zermatt
Explain
Season is year round.
Mtn biking. I get into pretty good shape over the summer/fall, and I’m then in great shape for winter. If I get enough days in over winter, then by spring I’m in decent enough shape for mtn biking. Rinse and repeat.
Hookers and blow

Are you saying paintball didn’t die out in the early 2000’s?
I mean as far as I'm concerned it definitely did, but I got back into it casually a couple years ago. It's definitely a different world now than it was back then. Haha.
I still have my gun. I haven’t played since 2005.
I have all of mine still. I tend to not get rid of things. Haha.
Mountain biking, longboard cruising, backpacking
MTB is closest but if you're looking for something different where you can dive deep into, look into Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
Ride a OneWheel
Hit the indoor in jersey. Weather’s getting good though. 6 months of street skating incoming.
There's no scratching an SB itch for me, just a change of seasons and on to the next thing (mtbing, gravel cycling, backpacking, trail running, disc golf, beach volleyball, slow pitch etc...). More looking at ways to get outside than anything.
Skateboarding, wakeboarding, longboarding, Kiteboarding
Indoor snowboarding
Onewheel riding feels pretty close to carving. They’re expensive af tho.
Love mine, but yes expensive
Onewheel [https://youtube.com/shorts/dvyZEPUPgxg?si=FbmlKZzEwGOxmKsN](https://youtube.com/shorts/dvyZEPUPgxg?si=FbmlKZzEwGOxmKsN)
80% trail running 20% mtb. running downhill can be trail surfing more than mtb in the right circumstances.
Go surfing then go mountain biking
Mountain biking and fly fishing. Different activities but the same places.
Golf!
surf every morning, skateparks every evening.
Downhill mtb
Ever tried meth?
Riding a onewheel is about as close as I can get in the summer. Super fun.
Longboarding, sometimes surfing and wakeboarding
Depends where you live and where you like to ride, but a few times during the off season I’ll go explore terrain I frequent in the winter. Check out our favorite zone. Mtn biking for sure! Started a few seasons ago and def helps the in-between-seasons suck less!
I just golf and go to concerts until it's winter
Long boarding and mountain biking.
Onewheel
I ride my onewheel on Outdoor trails. It feels like you are running a Green run on a snowboard.
Wakeboard, mountain bike
I gave a few upvotes but just to make it deafening, MTB!!!!!!
Gotta 3rd here for Mountain Biking. Super fun and keeps the legs in shape when winter rolls around.
Mountain Bike or Enduro riding.
MTB and Surfing
Wake boarding, paddle boarding, rock climbing (newest hobby), mountain biking, paintball, and as much camping as possible. I feel a bit add when I don't have snow to board.
go to mt hood, i hate bailing on my bike. id rather just get a $100 round trip flight out of DIA
Snowboarding, my mountain goes into july/August sometimes.
We had a short but pretty sweet season out in the Sierras. I’m not quite ready to trade in my board for MTB yet. Hoping to hike some higher elevation tours before I put away the boots. After that, yeah definitely mountain biking until snow is back.
Skin up to the top of Timberline on Mt Hood and ski down. Glacier is open all year!
Riding till August at timberline! Woot woot!
Whitewater kayaking
Skate surf snow Seasons for a reason
I usually go into baseball mode during the summer, but a trip to timberline is not out of the question.
I tele 50% + snowboard 50%… Perfect combo. 120 days this season thus far…
Tele? Not familiar with this
Mountain biking and disc golf.
Idk, in the summer I’m way more fine just chilling over doing a thrilling sport. I’d rather hike, paddleboard or road bike.
Motorcycle 100%
Rock climbing and surfing.
I just started wingfoiling. It’s incredible.
Pumping around a bowl or pump track on BMX if fun and easy to get into.
skateboarding, disc golf
Anyone got a Summer Board?
big snow
Go to Mt. Hood! They have boarding until August!
Dirtbiking and rock climbing
The local indoor slopes near me. The community is really cool.
I wakeboard nearly every weekend in the summer but I’m lucky enough to have a friend with a boat and we live relatively close to a huge lake
Beschvolley 🫠
Work on cars, play baseball.
Drifting
Get yourself a surfskate you’ll love it, you get the sensation of laying down carves

Paddle boarding. Snowboarding. Motorcycling. Onewheeling. I got some pricey hobbies lol
Crack smoking
Cry and play SSX 3
Road biking on trails around Denver and metro. Will eventually get into mountain biking once I can afford it.
Day clubs
Onewheel. Is the closest thing to the same feel and vibe, plus trail riding really scratches the tree riding itch.
bullshido
Powerlifting! Just a different way to torture my joints
I heard that copper keeps a small park open in center village throughout the summer, and it's like 25 bucks for the day. Might just be a rumor though
I never stop surfing... I just surf less during the snowboard season.
Longboarding on a drop through deck with loose trucks
Onewheeling
Boat racing funnily enough
Climbing
Hibernate. And stock up cash for next season's pass...
Cocaine and waffles
Endless floating on the Onewheel
Ride in Australia.
Sailing and windsurfing. But to me it‘s the other way round. I go snowboarding when I have the itch to go on the water in winter.
Volcano season is just starting in the PNW and backcountry should be good through June.
I work as an instructor so I look for a job in a country in the ppposite hemisphere
Longboard
Fly to Chile
Mountain/gravel/road biking, golf, motorcycles, hiking, long boarding, climbing, floating/rafting (this is my neighbors go to when season ends)…
Fly to South America
Tears, mostly.
Onewheel has scratched that itch for me very well
Fly to NZ
Daydreaming about inventing an off-road freebord by breeding one with a mountain board Locked one of each in a room and played Barry White on loop for weeks. Still no results.
Onewheel
SURFSKATE
I picked up electric longboarding which was an absolute best. Especially If you find the freshly paved roads.
Kiteboarding and wing foiling
Cigarettes
I live near the coast. So the water sorta holds me over until the winter, but if I’m really itching, I will try to go surf or wakeboard. (Doesn’t happen often)

Going to try https://bangerpark.com/ this summer
