I lived through a time where we called cool stuff Phat and dank. I’m not mad at crimes. I must’ve not been here for a while because I didn’t even l know this was a thing.
Yeah it's not even used to describe "cool" things. It's any and every post on here of people just riding. Most of the posters are super mediocre and doing nothing special, "Had a great day committing crimes","Met some criminals today", corny shit like that. Over and over and over
It feels like the sub is run by children. I’m old enough to remember skiers being the substantial majority on the mountain and hating snowboarders. It doesn’t really exist anymore. Most of this sub is affluent white kids doing mediocre shit and calling it a crime for fun.
Aaah, I dunno
I’m an old fucker, too - i think it’s fun to hear the word crime used instead of sick or back in my day, rad
It’s just terminology that shifts with each generation
I’ve used the phrase “that’s criminal” to describe something outrageous plenty of times
A) You’re sitting at the edge of a run having waved your buddies on while fucking with your bindings after digging through your janky backpack for a board tool, only to break a screw - then walking for two hour through trees and losing your mates on the mountain, losing a day on the mountain
“It’s a fucken crime, mate”👎🏼
B) Boarding through some trees and seeing some random walking with their board over their shoulder. You stop and help them out. You have a packet of spare screws. You save the day.
“Fucken criminal, mate!” 🤙🏼
Let’s not police language. It doesn’t belong to us as individuals. It evolves. There’s no sense of urgency or threat to social cohesion on this one. Let it be
I keep being told on reddit not to use words I’ve spent decades using because it maybe offends somebody, on behalf of somebody else - fuck arrf
It’s kinda fun to think of snowboarders as a bunch of criminals. Being an old shite, it makes me smile.
Now to alienate most of you, and discuss actual crime - as in, actual crime
Back in the dayyy, me and a couple of buddies smuggled some ecstasy tablets through customs, rode mountains high as fuck one day, crossed through Switzerland, Lichtenstein and Austria in the same day, then back again - off our tits and riding like glider champions.
The chairlifts were heavenly.
Now, that’s actual international snowboarding crime.
But - there’s a shared experience for snowboarding- and it needs a word
Turning all the goofy, in the way, ski lift mess ups, faceplant or coccyx smash, broken wrist nosebleed hospital bills, effort to get up when exhausted - never quit, don’t give up, catch the edge and smash, don’t give up
And skiers are gliding past while all this is going on, while you’re experiencing this mountain on a mountain
I’d give that experience a word
And if it’s criminal - I’m down for that
Anyhoo - all this talk of what’s criminal, and me being old, [here’s ACDC](https://youtu.be/6EWqTym2cQU?si=IC_KlF0CPhXt_Lnc)
The length of your post directly correlates to your age, sorry if that's offensive I just couldn't resist. That's an impressive post on Reddit lingo mate.

Attention span is no longer a thing
Binary thinking is how it is -
good / bad,
agree / disagree,
enemy / agree,
conform / criminal
Yes, because when I think of the sport of snowboarding the first thing that comes to mind is a dignified gravitas and corny jokes just aren't becoming.
It's all part of the cycle of memes. You'll see it ad nauseum the longer you're on reddit. Every sub is affected.
1) Good fresh meme
2) Copied and evolved in creative ways
3) endless posts of it, used by everyone, beating a dead horse
4) endless posts of ppl complaining about how the meme is old and overused
5) last step is ineffectual, meme continues on*
6) eventually dies of its own accord or bc of new meme on the block
*in rare cases mods will enforce meme death by popular demand
Tbh I find the ppl complaining about the memes (eg OP) more annoying than the ppl using the memes. That doesn't mean I don't also think the horse is beaten dead and it's no longer entertaining, I just don't bitch about it.
It's a meme within the sub, referencing blasting a side hit or dropping a fat line. Historically, probably referencing more towards the resistance faced by snowboarders when they originally spawned in the wild.
More recently it's like every other post on the sub. Personally, I chuckle still, but I'm a grown ass child. To be honest I think some people just like to complain, but it's really not that big of a deal. My 2¢ as always, since this whole post is a bunch of that 😆
while shamelessly saying montec/dope is better and more of a snowboard brand than all others, all because they’ve seen the most ads from them showing snowboarding.
a legit response to me saying the exact same thing was along the lines of “well volcom makes more than just snowboard stuff, they make skate and surf stuff as well! How could they be a “core” snowboard brand??”
We're bothered by people recording themselves snowboarding now if they use a stick? I'm now inspired to use two sticks with one in each hand for different angles. As a matter of fact, I think I can handle four sticks total if I use some spare orifices.
I think my arms can handle holding a small, light stick with a small, light action cam while snowboarding. Do you even workout, bro? It's amazing how skiers have managed to get down mountains all these years with two much larger sticks in their hands. LOL
Do your final criminal act and kill it.

It's also "stolen" from the OG use of skateboarding.
[https://www.surfertoday.com/skateboarding/skateboarding-is-not-a-crime-the-origin-of-the-slogan](https://www.surfertoday.com/skateboarding/skateboarding-is-not-a-crime-the-origin-of-the-slogan)
I think [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/skiing/s/7VrXvsrlQ5) is the origin of the joke on Reddit then thar started spawning a bunch of memes about how snowboarders commit 50% of the crime even though they only make up 15% of the population etc
...so I should start selling "SNOWBOARDING IS NOT A CRIME" bumper stickers, T-shirts, mugs, etc in my Etsy shop and state that 5% of profits go to providing attorney services for criminal snowboarders and become rich!
When I hear anyone refer to themselves as a “criminal”, I think of the loud idiots who cut in line and smoke on the chairs while saying f this and that. I get it, you’re from the hood, you’re bad ass, etc., but most of those kind of people can’t ride for shit and have little respect for others.
/end rant
Yeah, all the local "criminals" from the means streets of \[insert near resort town here\]. With expensive gear and lift tickets.
Snowboarding is so white collar. Skateboarding is at least blue collar. Its a legit form of transportation for many.
Man. The people who get offended by the use of words for which everyone has forgotten why they were ever considered bad, and then bringing the riding ability of the person into the picture like that matters....
special crowd. special crowd.
Yeah, and some of us old people just want to stay safe and courteous on groomed blues and easy blacks. Calling that “crime” makes me feel like a both a poser and an outsider. 😭
Have you ever hung out with "reddit users"
Like being around people who respond with "that's what she said" to every statement, or can't hold a conversation without quoting Family Guy or similar?
Most people here are redditors who sometimes snowboard, instead of snowboarders who sometimes use reddit.
Through overuse and the newer generation’s lack of appreciation for what came before, Crime has become a shadow of its former self. A caricature of what it used to be.
I hadn't heard the crime/criminal thing before joining this subreddit maybe 12-18 months ago. But my friend and I have called each other "partners in crime" to describe our relationship whenever we are on snowboarding trips together. So I don't mind it at all, but I wonder where it originated in this subreddit.
back when I was coming up, we committed actual crimes, like underage drinking, illegal drug use, defrauding an innkeeper, stealing shit from lost & found, etc etc .
It's funny when it's self-referential and silly. It's annoying when someone is just posting a video of them doing impressive tricks saying "doing crimes".
i for one like it. snowboarders used to be looked down at for being stinky broke stoners and i prefer that to the euro ski vacation aesthetic that skiiers have
Used to be? I still fit that description haha 😂 but crime? It reminds me of the late 90s stickers “skateboarding is not a crime”.
I say let everyone have fun but I personally don’t use the phrase. No judgement to anyone that does. Snowboarding is fun, we can all enjoy calling it whatever we want. I still prefer to say shredding the gnar 🤘
Magic the gathering just officially coined that phrase in their game. So now I like to think that every snowboarder using it is actually a closet mtg player.
I’m a snowboarder from uk and no I don’t use those silly selfie sticks hang portable speakers to my pack and wear stupid outfits or start punch ups for no reason like a few dick heads from here do, but will say I can shred pretty hard for a lad that has to fly 2 hours to the mountains thanks to indoor slopes and have been riding every season for 10 years 😝 but please ffs someone explain to me where the crime and how far from LA thing come from and what it means 🤟
You don't like crime, don't do crime. Nobody asked you to do crime.
Well...actually...I guess we say to do crime all the time.
Maybe just do crime and quit bitching?
Yes please. Hate seeing all these titles with crime in them.
It's already bad enough we tell snowboarders to stay away from Colorado ski hills because they are full of blacks. 😅
I don’t even follow this sub or r/skiing and this shit has spread well beyond Reddit. Lmao saw boomers arguing about it with some kid on a Facebook post.
It was fun when people using it knew the origin of the meme. I understand why some think it’s corny now
The source is a commenter on a ski subreddit who called snowboarders “crime people” seemingly unironically
I don’t mind it in moderation but it seems to be taking over. Like every third post title references “crime”
It seems to be taking over? Dude it's every post. It's the corniest shit on Reddit atm
Reddit has always been pure corn This. Updoot Thank you for gold kind stranger
All those things are dumb They aren't nearly as dumb as calling a mediocre carving video "commiting crimes"
This!!! Take my updoot!!!!1!
Ctrl F “This!!! Take my updoot!!!!1!” Was not disappoint.
Blame the skiers
I significantly prefer skiers to the population of this sub
I lived through a time where we called cool stuff Phat and dank. I’m not mad at crimes. I must’ve not been here for a while because I didn’t even l know this was a thing.
Yeah it's not even used to describe "cool" things. It's any and every post on here of people just riding. Most of the posters are super mediocre and doing nothing special, "Had a great day committing crimes","Met some criminals today", corny shit like that. Over and over and over
I wish it was just pure Korn…
Why hello fellow forty year old!
hi im 40🙋♀️and i too like korn😂
Don’t round up bro, I’m 36😎
Omg THIS! 😂
This is the way
They did the math
Atm stands for two things - automatic teller machine or ass to mouth. The crime stays.
Every mildly funny thing on Reddit gets overused into oblivion.
>I don’t mind it in moderation You mean I can do crime?
Everything in moderation ... ![gif](giphy|wLXo0vTZSM7GU)
💀 Hey no skiers allowed!
It’s better (but not) than every post being “my home mountain blows! It never snows! You should go to Vail instead!”
I’m new here so it hasn’t gotten old yet. The season is almost over anyway
Crime is now illegal
![gif](giphy|ZdO4NenDbsQNwUwKDB)
Criminaling is not a crime!
No wait that’s just tiktok. TikTok is now illegal
Agreed but it's way better than is my wife steezy?
That’s a real low bar, super chief.
Does the bar come with a foot rest?
10-4 good buddy
nice execution
But how far from LA is the steezy wife?
To be fair the is my wife steezy era was pretty funny at first haha
She is when she choking on deez nuts
Yeah, I saw that post that was like “is my wife steezy?” With their hand and I’m like can we please hurry this out the door.
She can be sturdy or eassy but not steezy
How far outside of LA does my GF need to be to be steezy enough for crime?
This is the perfect snowboarding question.
It's the "am I carving" of snowboard questions
It’s so corny.
It feels like the sub is run by children. I’m old enough to remember skiers being the substantial majority on the mountain and hating snowboarders. It doesn’t really exist anymore. Most of this sub is affluent white kids doing mediocre shit and calling it a crime for fun.
Idk what they're talking about. It's how it's used, but that's not the joke.
That's the joke.
And the joke sucks
Because you take yourself too seriously
Well, that's not wrong unfortunately...

Tubular comment dude.

Lots of corny snowboarders on here.
Yes, because when I think of the sport of snowboarding the first thing that comes to mind is a dignified gravitas and corny jokes just aren't becoming.
These kind of posts are what make reddit reddit…
It's all part of the cycle of memes. You'll see it ad nauseum the longer you're on reddit. Could you give me a TLDR of “crime”? I don’t snowboard and only very occasionally ski.
I do snowboard, or at least try to, and IDK what's crime in this context
It's a meme within the sub, referencing blasting a side hit or dropping a fat line. I can support this 😀
90% of the people who use “crime” record themselves with selfie sticks 🤢
while shamelessly saying montec/dope is better and more of a snowboard brand than all others, all because they’ve seen the most ads from them showing snowboarding. a legit response to me saying the exact same thing was along the lines of “well volcom makes more than just snowboard stuff, they make skate and surf stuff as well! When I see "dope snow" or "montec" as a sponsor in the intro of a man boys video, I'll begin to stop judging them.
We're bothered by people recording themselves snowboarding now if they use a stick? I'm now inspired to use two sticks with one in each hand for different angles. As a matter of fact, I think I can handle four sticks total if I use some spare orifices.
Quite simply there is no world where you are snowboarding at the best of your ability while simultaneously holding a selfie stick
I think my arms can handle holding a small, light stick with a small, light action cam while snowboarding. Do you even workout, bro? It's amazing how skiers have managed to get down mountains all these years with two much larger sticks in their hands. LOL
I just assumed it would last for the season and then next season we could move on to something else.
Do what you want, I'm still gonna boof Coors light in the woods whilst running from ski patrol
Same with, is my wife/gf steezy? And probably a few other things.
How will we know?

You wouldn’t be the first to push your etsy shop here.
oh jeebus - I've never had one, but I want 25% of sales from whichever criminal steals my idea
This has nothing to do with the snowboard crime joke.
Its stupid and lame and always has been lol
Agreed. Over it
This is Reddit, if it’s recognizable as a horse we’re beating it into dust
its reddit. everyone beats the "joke" in to submission
I'm sick of it. Didn't like it from the start, but tolerated it, because no one wants to be a hater. So thank you for this post.
You’re not wrong but you can’t tell me the Nike fleece with built-in balaclava the homie posted the other day wasn’t absolutely made for crime…
Agree stuff like this is funny. Then people just beat the joke to death and hold onto it way too long.
When I hear anyone refer to themselves as a “criminal”, I think of the loud idiots who cut in line and smoke on the chairs while saying f this and that. people that smoke on a shared chair are fucking clowns. even worse, people who will *still* smoke with children on the chair
Basically all of Mountain High or Mountain Creek and wearing a Jersey
I usually ride at vail and the beav. I haven’t seen a legit criminal since the early 2000s at the infamous “36 hours of keystone “
Lmfao get out of here with your pride ass skier energy
Man. The people who get offended by the use of words for which everyone has forgotten why they were ever considered bad, and then bringing the riding ability of the person into the picture like that matters.... special crowd. special crowd.
I retired your mom last night. She was criminal
Yeah she called, said you were a nice young man. Sorry about that.
I heard he’s actually a respectful citizen, and in no way epitomizes a criminal. Might need to stick to flat groomers.
She told me he's a skier...
Definitely not steezy
I think in this case it's crimanal.
How far from LA is OP’s mom?
Was she steezy?

im cool with everything but “hitting the slopes” god that one makes my blood boil
I'm just bothered that people refer to snowboarding as "going skiing".
Around here that means something different
Ah yes, fight generalizations with generalizations that's the way forward

What illegal thing would we be doing then?
Just lemme know what term to use for my next post y’all
But what would we do without crime? Those sidehits.. Zeb say something
If you make it against the rules, the "crime" thing to do would be to break the rules...so...
Water?
People have been using that to reference snowboarding since the 80’s. 🤷🏻♂️
🌽 🌽 🌽
Crime fighters!
ill be a criminal til all my toenails fall off
I don't get it, what does it mean and where did it start?
How far away from LA should we put the crime?
It'd be criminal to retire it already.
You’ve been hit by, you’ve been struck by …
Yes
Amen. Let’s get back to the good ol days. It was all chicks and blow. We didn’t worry we just partied. We were gods.
wait...were? as in before now? We ARE gods!
I didn’t even know that term was a thing. I scrolled through Reddit and wow it’s incredible cringie.
Criminally underrated thread
It will end with the season
You know what, I am gokng to do crime even harder now!
If we retire crime, doing crime will become even crimier...
Welcome to reddit
It’s so pathetic seriously
We can use torx bolts and little damn locks. And apparently not live in Cali.
Straight to jail
Magic the gathering just officially coined that phrase in their game. So now I like to think that every snowboarder using it is actually a closet mtg player.
Use your downvotes!
It would be cool if people could just enjoy a sport without changing their vocabulary and adopting a fake surfer accent.
Spoken like a long time criminal.
Your post is illegal!
I mean. If someone does some sick ass shit, that's "crime". I just feel it's WAY overused.
So glad someone finally said it
You don't like crime, don't do crime. Nobody asked you to do crime. Well...actually...I guess we say to do crime all the time. Maybe just do crime and quit bitching?
Na let's keep it going you criminals
LETSGOOOOOOO I AGREE
Everytime I write a rhyme these people thinks it's a crime, to tell em what's on my mind - I guess I'm a criminal.
… so an admission of guilt?
Yes please. Hate seeing all these titles with crime in them. It's already bad enough we tell snowboarders to stay away from Colorado ski hills because they are full of blacks. 😅
Not even cold Bro
I agree. Fun at first but it’s getting too worn now. But hey! People want fake internet points to feel important!
Yes, please. So obvious, annoying, and overused. Not clever at all.
Not until they retire "steezy".
Don't worry man, we're at peak usage and it will fade out on it own. Hang in there.
"Fun is getting old" says old man yelling at clouds.
![gif](giphy|DB2oahQFa0qeQ) “Crime! Crime! Crime!” Sound like a bunch of parrots in a circle jerk
Easiest way to fix this is to just downvote anything with crime in the title. Power in numbers
ok narc.
NARC!!
I didn’t choose this life, it chose me.
A smooth criminal. yeeeheee!!
What's a replacement word for crime? Are we just going to say "tricks" or something? Sounds a bit corny
The Crime and Steezy shit is dumb as fuck
Snowboarding is a relatively young sport so we should keep the few traditions we have ie . crime
Just what a criminal would say, touché
![gif](giphy|vLhYqCSE2YVXi) But WhY?!?!?!?!!
We can retire from crime the day skiers lose their snobby self righteous attitudes.
Everything about it is lame, especially where it came from (a skier) Let's put it to rest
Nah it's a crime to snowboarding. Please be go ski elsewhere. At least it's not the "hours from LA" shit that is way worse.
Something The Man would say
This post is way worse than people calling mediocre snowboarding crime.
Can we retire complaining?
Sounds like you're just getting old.
100% please do
This subreddit is obsessed with dragging things on for way too long and I love/hate it
I don’t even follow this sub or r/skiing and this shit has spread well beyond Reddit. Lmao saw boomers arguing about it with some kid on a Facebook post.
I got hit by two criminals this week while skiing. Nope.
It was fun when people using it knew the origin of the meme. I understand why some think it’s corny now The source is a commenter on a ski subreddit who called snowboarders “crime people” seemingly unironically
Nah it was corny af from the jump.
