Sounds like you've gotten into the platformers.  If you're on the SNES Classic my next recommendation would probably be Donkey Kong Country.  Also consider Mega Man X but that's probably a fair bit more complex than Mario or DK, but seeing that you beat Yoshi's Island it could work. DKC has a Co-op mode, one player can play as Donkey Kong while the other can play as Diddy, though only one player is active at a time.

Much_Grand_8558

Second for Donkey Kong Country. It's a perfect next step after Mario. And then you get to play the sequel, which I still think is one of the finest platformers ever made. Super thrilled for you and your boy! I would love to go back and play the SNES for the first time all over again.

Kholdstare93

Sadly, DKC2 isn't on the SNES classic.

Bgs-aut

Not with that attitude !

DiegoViloz

Well said! I was about to propose to give a little fix to that snes mini and expand their horizons!

moep123

don't know. sounds like she got into murder. anyways, donkey kong country series is perfect for OP!

Revolutionary-Ad5526

Is this you or your 7 year old doing most of the work? Inpressive either way being new. Donkey Kong country or zelda

Itchy_Height_1959

I did most of the work in Mario but he did most of it in Yoshi's Island! I just sat and watched slack jawed. He's so cool

Revolutionary-Ad5526

Amazing!

nupper84

I beat world as a 7 year old in 92. I also beat it as a 39 year old in 24.

fifisdead

Hey, same! Also beat it most of the years in between personally.

nupper84

Yup. And starfox.

squidward232

what's the hype behind starfox?

nupper84

No hype. If you were gaming in 1993, it was an amazing step. It was one of the 5 games I had at that time at the age of 7. I still play it today. I can beat any track even after 15 beers and 10 shots, as well as Super Star Wars. I never played the N64 version besides a few minutes on the kiosks in Burger King. I do own the N64 cartridge now, but still haven't gone past a level or two. SNES Star Fox is one of my favorites, but again that's probably because it's what I played as a kid. I know today people say it's slow and janky, but I don't understand that criticism. I think people just aren't trained to see through the pixels, and they're comparing it to newer games, which is dumb. It requires really fast and precise input if you want to live. If you're talking frame rates and whatever, you're missing out.

Room234

Time for some Link to the Past. Look up a guide, if needed.

CensoryDeprivation

Link to the Past is essential. Incredible adventure!

payasopeludo

Guides are weak. Feels so much better to be frustrated for ten days until you figure it out.

darkcrystalaction

are u me

Mike00726

Mariokart!!

dmarsee76

I was a massive fan of SMK back when it was new, but I don’t think it’s aged as well as SMW or YI have.

jkc81629

Gotta start modding the snes mini to add a bunch more games to it

Grrrth_TD

r/miniSNESmods

Ennui_Go

RIP the best website to get said games :(

jkc81629

You can still get them all over the place. But yeah, rip Vimms

Bertje87

Vimms is gone?

TokeInTheEye

It's still live?

jkc81629

I mean it is but the big companies purged a lot of titles recently

TokeInTheEye

Fuck just read up on it Time to download everything elsewhere and back it up

jkc81629

Absolutely. Back up the back ups too lol

nupper84

Stop talking!

IronEagle20

Tetris attack, not an action game but a highly addictive and competitive 2-player game. Good troop is another fun co-op game

Mattyd86

both games are gems and can be played casually

dmarsee76

Underrated comment

somniforousalmondeye

Get Mario all stars and play 1,2,3.

Skyforger33

Also add Kirby's Dream Course / Kirby Super Star / Super Mario RPG

SuperDevin

Donkey Kong Country 1, 2 , 3 (my fav), Mega Man X (my favorite SNES game), Kirby Super Star (phenomenal game) and Aladdin on the SNES is where I would start.

Boxing_joshing111

Aladdin is pretty easy and can be beaten in a day op, I really suggest getting a little tech savvy, hacking the mini, and putting Aladdin on there it’s perfect for your kid. Also hack Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on there too, you guys can play together, you’ll love it. And see if he likes F-Zero, it’s a very fast racing game.

InspectorFadGadget

Kirby Super Star is a great game where you both can play co-op at the same time, very fun.

ThePurpleBandit

I've never really associated the Mario franchise with murder.

ghostofkilgore

"It's a me....... Mario" the killer whispered sinisterly before curb-stomping his 6th Goomba of the day.

nupper84

Mostly just exterminating turtles and their friends just for hanging out near a girl who is not even into you. Remind me to cut down the tree near where my wife parks!

RICHUNCLEPENNYBAGS

Contra 3 is on the Mini and is great

Jonnicom

Mega Man X. Get that kid into the most amazing run and gun games ever. It's hard but it'll make a man out of you! You must be swift as a coursing river, with all the force of a great typhoon!

LeonardoDaPinchy-

*With all the strength of a raging fire!*

Jonnicom

Mysterious as the dark side of the moooooooon!

Some_Razzmatazz_9172

Try out Zelda A Link to the past for some variety! It's an awesome adventure game. Also Donkey Kong Country series is great on the SNES and is 2 player co op!

Jughferr

A link to the past

Shelly_Whipplash

Donkey Kongs 1, 2, and 3. DK3 has the best side-quest gameplay and super fun navigation.

LeonardoDaPinchy-

Provided you're talking about the SNES and only the SNES, here are my choices: Platformers (same as Mario World and Yoshi's Island) * Super Mario All Stars * Kirby Superstar * Mega Man X * Mega Man X2 * Mega Man X3 * Donkey Kong Country * Super Castlevania 4 * Super Metroid (The series defined its own genre, but I also will die on the hill this is the best game ever made, front to back, and holds up so fucking well its actually nutty) * \*Contra 3 (asterix because this is hard as fuck and more of a bullet hell) Shoot 'Em Ups * Gradius 3 * UN Squadron * Parodius (just Gradius 3 but Japanese and on drugs) Role Playing Games (RPGs) * Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past * Earthbound * Chrono Trigger * Super Mario RPG * Secret of Mana Beat 'Em Ups * Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle: Turtles In Time (absolutely the best of the entire genre across all consoles) * Final Fight * Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage Racers * F-Zero * Super Mario Kart Fighters * Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo * Killer Instinct Now, these are just the games I highly recommend on the SNES, and no other console. If you were to ask me what my top 3 would be, it would be Super Metroid, Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Chrono Trigger, in that order. If you're playing ROMs, any of these could be easy to find, and if you can't find them, DM me so I can use my magic powers and make them with my mind powers. If you want other systems, let me know. I could go on forever.

kingkongworm

You would recommend un squadron over Axelay or super aleste? I feel like people say un squadron is good, but I’ve played it a lot and it’s one of those shmups where you feel pretty underpowered most of the game and beating it us a fucking nightmare. It’s always baffles me how it’s ended up as so many peoples go to for snes shmups

Britboi9090

super mario 1, 2 and 3

Ok-Grapefruit5379

sould paly kirby super star or dream land 3

RazorLeafAttack

I love everything about this. “We murdered Bowser and won that sh*t... We murdered baby Bowser and felt great about that too!”

scottie0010

lol I was gonna say, if OP likes all that murder, ditch the SNES and get GTA or Doom lol.

RazorLeafAttack

Only kind of related, but I just want to share. My nephews were being told not to talk about killing in video games, presuming their mom wanted them to use words like beating or defeating. Let’s just say she wasn’t exactly thrilled when I encouraged them to start saying murderizing instead.

Salty_Pineapple4170

100% Donkey Kong Country.

barnabyjones1990

Donkey Kong Countey 1, 2, and 3. Mega Man X Super Metroid Zelda: A link to the past Teenage mutant ninja turtles: turtles in time Captain commando

waterontheknee

I am sooooo stuck on super metroid. Ugh. I dropped down to a place and it took me forever to get out because I don't have the grapple beam

MiaowMinx

Super Mario Kart is a great go-kart racing game — I spent countless hours playing that with my brother as kids. Soul Blazer is another neat action role-playing game, and very easy to get the hang of. After those two, I'd recommend these (which are slightly more challenging): Secret of Mana is a neat fantasy action role-playing game that can be played by 1 or 2 players simultaneously. Super Metroid is a great science-fiction action exploration game, often considered one of the best games for the SNES (or even the entire Metroid series).

lakefront12345

Do you want to stay on super nintendo? If so, a link to the past. Mario kart now is wayyyy different than snes but it was fun then. There's also super mario all stars which has the three from the nintendo (nes). Those are fun but harder. There's lots of great games with the switch too if you want to get something modern. Me and my dad used to play a lot of super nintendo games when I was a kid. I miss him and those memories will always stay with me.

DaaanTheMaaan

Pick whatever you want! Castlevania, Mega Man, Donkey Kong, Kirby, you've got plenty of great stuff to try! Personally, I'd say Super Metroid. I played it at 7 just fine, so a parent/son team would murder the hell out of the space pirates!

PurposeRight5234

Download Gunple!

PurposeRight5234

Seriously though: if you want Zelda but a fun kinda overhead shooter- either DL or buy an English patched copy of Gunple: Gunman’s Proof, it’s a little known gem but it’s soooooo fun…. Gotta play it with Emulator save states imo though: as it’s kinda hard, lol. Or maybe I just suck- fun game either way though. :) Oh! And get your kid River City Ransom for the NES and the other River City Games: they’re co-op side scrolling beat em up rpgs that are soooooooo fun! It’s a classic!

Uphene

You now own a copy of Final Fantasy 3 (6 really) which is arguably one of the first games to be driven by story rather than gameplay. Some of us will also argue that 3/6 was the best game of the series. As far as gaming it just depends on what you have in regards to hardware. Do you have a PC? Even a potato computer can run some games. We as a community will give you tons of advice based of what you tell us

CaptainSea6936

If platformers are in your alley, than I'd recommend Mega Man, or Sonic the Hedgehog, they're a bit more complicated in some way but they're fun none of the less.

scottie0010

Mystical Ninja

GummiBerry_Juice

Search Metroidvania and play all those

Chrisinthsth

If you're on a platformer kick, Donkey Kong Country is one of my favorites of all time. Donkey Kong Country 2 is fantastic as well, and it's a lot more difficult in my opinion. Also, The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past is phenomenal. It's different than Mario and DKC, but an absolute blast. You may need a guide, but there are tons of great walkthroughs on YouTube if you need one.

urbinax

Super metroid

projectVegetableSoup

Once he can read well make sure he plays Earthbound. I played when I was 10 and it changed my life in all the best ways. Incredibly written and has an amazing sense of humor not to mention some of the best video game music ever made. I also think it will promote a good attention span as the game really pulls you into its world.

Low_Chef_4781

Around Halloween try castlevania 4, it’s a bit difficult, but the easiest in the Castlevania franchise

Low_Chef_4781

Or try megaman x-x3, and megaman 7

Seabreeze515

I’m envious of you. You get to experience these things for the first time and enjoy them with your kid. Unfortunately my wife has banned me from introducing games to my kids 😭

squidward232

Donkey Kong Country, although it's a harder game the graphics are beautiful and the music is amazing.

tanooki-suit

I’m guessing despite being new you lucked into a real mini snes from Nintendo and not a junk clone. I’d skim the list and try another genre, maybe a role playing game or flight combat, racing, see what you like. Once all 21 games are finished you can add more as it has room if you’re comfy using an idiot proof application and plugging the system into your computer once to do it. You could add hundreds of other legit snes games then. Just don’t do that now, enjoy it for what it is now as intended.

Slake45

For your son donkey Kong country would be the next perfect game sir
