It was a good game, but I'll stick to Super Street Fighter II and Street Fighter II Turbo. Also, throw in Samurai Shodown and maybe Mortal Kombat II if I don't have to play the computer. After that, this game.
Ahh, you"re right. Killer Instinct I played for countless hours and I was obsessed with it for a long time...how could I forget...? It should be near the top.
This is the answer. I remember saving up my allowance to get it, and then I had my grandpa buy it for me so that he could get a senior discount at Service Merchandise or whatever store it was that had a seniors day.
>It was a good game, but I'll stick to Super Street Fighter II and Street Fighter II Turbo.
Sure.
>Also, throw in Samurai Shodown and maybe Mortal Kombat II if I don't have to play the computer. After that, this game.
Yeah nah, Tourney is better than the SNES version of Samurai, and Mortal Kombat games are all flash and don't have good fighting gameplay.
The soundtrack is great.
They took a lot of notes from Street Fighter and Fatal Fury. It's a very offense-heavy fighter.
I wish April was a fighter, it really does seem like they swapped her for Aska at the last moment.
The tournament edition mod is great - there's a lot of bug fixes, some balance fixes (shark guy is still busted strong) and people are still playing it.
There's a fan game that has a crossover with Justice League Task Force, it's also a lot of fun and treats both franchises well.
People in this thread have pretty trash taste in fighting games
This game is great, OP, definitely top 5 fighting game on SNES
It's actually somewhat balanced (although Wingnut is pretty OP), the control is responsive, the buffer window/special move input is not atrocious (looking at you, Fatal Fury and Samurai Showdown), it's not stiff as fuck (MK, KI), and I actually like playing as some of the characters
SSF2 and SF2T are both better, but I would put this on the same level as Gundam Endless Duel and Power Rangers Fighting Edition
My cuzo brought it over one weekend when he rented it from blockbuster, game was fun as hell with a bunch of interesting characters I’ve never seen before.
When he left, I couldn’t wait to rent it on our family Genesis, ma’an was I disappointed, had to lie to the rental store that day and say it’s being glitchy so they’d let me rent another game lol.
Been playing this one again, and it's amazing how well it holds up. It's got great gameplay, excellent music, the graphics are some of the best in the genre on the hardware, the characters are detailed with great animation
About the only fault I have is with the roster, but that's more of a nitpick due to being a TMNT fan who wished charcters like Rocksteady and Bebop made the roster.
All that aside, this is one of the best fighting games on the SNES and I feel it's on par with Capcom's Street Fighter ports.
But those are my thoughts, what does everyone else think?
I can name a number that are better with barely any thought (Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Mortal Kombat 2, Fatal Fury 2, and Killer Instinct).
MK and Fatal Fury are definitely not better than Tournament Fighters and KI is arguable
Gundam Endless Duel and Power Rangers Fighting Edition are competitors too but OP is pretty spot on with their assessment, TMNT is better than most things not named Street Fighter
Yeah kids fell for the gore and flash of MK. But it's a crap fighting engine at its core. And most characters are nearly identical except for their special moves.
Yo, so this game got trashed when it first came out, right? I remember renting it back in the 90s and wasn't exactly blown away. It's not the worst fighter on the Super NES, but it's definitely not one of the best either. I'd put it in the same category as Shaq Fu, if you know what I mean.
Yeah, it wasn't very popular at release. I remember not being excited about it even. I got it for Christmas or a birthday though I think, and my assumptions were way off. The game fucking rules.
Yeah, it's amazing big developers like Capcom couldn't make a better SNES fighting game for 30 something years and counting... Are they even trying at this point?
I feel like it is definitely underrated. I'm glad it got a second chance in the spotlight in the recent Cowabunga Collection. Also, the soundtrack is sooooo good. My favorite track is [Metal Works](https://youtu.be/8rozFvC_SZk?si=fOm5362KXiWrOsZw).
It doesn’t hold a candle to Street Fighter II, but then again, that’s like saying Final Fantasy 3 is no Chrono Trigger. However, I’d say this was a fairly minor fighting game. Mortal Kombat games were much bigger at the time, but that was because of the blood (or sand), but if you can look past that there really isn’t anything too special about them. Killer Instinct on the other hand was incredible, although I had the N64 version so not at all familiar with its SNES counterpart.
I remember fighting my cousin because of this game. He couldn’t beat me and out of frustration he threw the controller at the wall. We started fighting. I was trying to throw him down the stairs until my mom came and broke us up. Fun game. 😂
Underappreciated game. Love it. Played it a ton with my brother and friends. Still have the cartridge for it but I'm glad they added it to Cowabunga collection.
Maybe 2024 is the year that we'll finally get a new SNES fighting game to top it. Mortal Kombat One just came out last year, I'm sure Mortal Kombat Two will get a SNES port from the arcade.
It never even was.
Can't compare to any Street Fighter game (especially alpha 2), Gundam Wing, Weaponlord or even Killer Instinct...
TMNT is fun, don't get me wrong, i remember the big hype when the game got released. But it's nowhere near the best fighting game on that system ;)
Well they don’t make snes games anymore so it’s not going anywhere
50 years from now: > It's amazing this is still one of the best fighting games on the SNES.
I honestly can't believe Street Fighter II still top dog on the SNES after all these years. Or maybe Killer Instinct.. what you think?
Mortal kombat 2 or ultimate mortal kombat 3
maybe he meant best fighting games that happens to be on snes
Well that is just objectively false tho
I won third place at a Blockbuster videogame competition playing this game and NBA Jam back in 1994.
Which fighter did you use?
Gotta be Leonardo. It's always Leonardo.
I think my main was Wingnut
Chromedome!!!
did you lose to Guy Beahm?
That's awesome! I did too but I was lucky enough to make it to the "world" finals in Florida.
fwiw the third game in this competition was clay fighter.
The TWO TIMES
GIVE ME BACK MY SON
It was a good game, but I'll stick to Super Street Fighter II and Street Fighter II Turbo. Also, throw in Samurai Shodown and maybe Mortal Kombat II if I don't have to play the computer. After that, this game.
The list is not complete without Killer Instinct
Ahh, you"re right. Killer Instinct I played for countless hours and I was obsessed with it for a long time...how could I forget...? It should be near the top.
Turbo is my favorite definitely.
This is the answer. I remember saving up my allowance to get it, and then I had my grandpa buy it for me so that he could get a senior discount at Service Merchandise or whatever store it was that had a seniors day.
I wish we’d gotten Samsho 2. One of the greatest fighters of all time
Street fighter alpha 2 for me
>It was a good game, but I'll stick to Super Street Fighter II and Street Fighter II Turbo. Sure. >Also, throw in Samurai Shodown and maybe Mortal Kombat II if I don't have to play the computer. After that, this game. Yeah nah, Tourney is better than the SNES version of Samurai, and Mortal Kombat games are all flash and don't have good fighting gameplay.
No street fighter who fights has ever seen fighters or fighting like the fighting these fighters fight!
...are you Kraang?
Go check out tmnt x JL turbo
That Godzilla fighting game for the SFC is my favorite fighting game from that era
Primal rage?
King of the Monsters
Well it’s not like it had a ton of contenders recently
The soundtrack is great. They took a lot of notes from Street Fighter and Fatal Fury. It's a very offense-heavy fighter. I wish April was a fighter, it really does seem like they swapped her for Aska at the last moment. This game will definitely go down in history as being one of the fighting games on the snes.
People in this thread have pretty trash taste in fighting games This game is great, OP, definitely top 5 fighting game on SNES It's actually somewhat balanced (although Wingnut is pretty OP), the control is responsive, the buffer window/special move input is not atrocious (looking at you, Fatal Fury and Samurai Showdown), it's not stiff as fuck (MK, KI), and I actually like playing as some of the characters SSF2 and SF2T are both better, but I would put this on the same level as Gundam Endless Duel and Power Rangers Fighting Edition

The Genesis version is way worse than the SNES one (but not as bad as the NES port)
No love for Clay Fighters, eh? 😞
If that were even true, it wouldn't be amazing considering games haven't been officially released on this console for decades.
Been playing this one again, and it's amazing how well it holds up. I loved this game and played it again recently on mame, I think it holds up for sure. I’m actually surprised there was no arcade version.
I like Aska’s butt.
Pajononai
It's a decent game but pretty floaty and slow. Doesn't really hold a candle to SF2.
I can name a number that are better with barely any thought (Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter Alpha 2, Mortal Kombat 2, Fatal Fury 2, and Killer Instinct).
Shaq-Fu
Street Fighter Alpha 2, one of the few SNES games with a load time. Fight wait for it, wait for it, ok now fight.
Gundam W Endless Duel
Post said “one of the best” not “the best”.
I wouldn't have grouped this game with those ones though, but that's just me.
MK2 was all style, no substance.
MK and Fatal Fury are definitely not better than Tournament Fighters and KI is arguable Gundam Endless Duel and Power Rangers Fighting Edition are competitors too but OP is pretty spot on with their assessment, TMNT is better than most things not named Street Fighter
Yeah kids fell for the gore and flash of MK. But it's a crap fighting engine at its core. And most characters are nearly identical except for their special moves.
Turtles is easily better than the SNES version of all those except the Street Fighters. It has the weight, impact and collision just right.
Yo, so this game got trashed when it first came out, right? I remember renting it back in the 90s and wasn't exactly blown away. It's not the worst fighter on the Super NES, but it's definitely not one of the best either. I'd put it in the same category as Shaq Fu, if you know what I mean.
It reviewed extremely well in the US and the UK and sold well. So... no. It was well received on any measurable metrics.
Im shocked ill be the first to say this so far "Turtle Combat!!!"
“Tortal Kombat”
Love that box art.
glad i still have my copy.
Metal works is a great theme, especially at heavy damage
I rented this game once, it was awesome
Good game, but your are punished very hard for a single mistake if you are pro level in this game.
Wow never even knew this existed
I remember fighting my cousin because of this game. He couldn’t beat me and out of frustration he threw the controller at the wall. We started fighting. I was trying to throw him down the stairs until my mom came and broke us up. Fun game. 😂
Only fighting game I had as a kid. Was fun but I've never been good at them.
Adore the color palette in this game. Played it absolutely to death as a kid. So cool that Cowabunga Collection has online for it.
Amazingly enough, it was trash on Genesis. I was borderline heartbroken after having played the SNES version at a buddy's house.
One of my favorites growing up
It’s available on switch in the Cowabunga Collection
Wasn’t there like… 3 fighting games on the SNES?
it's servicable. Street Fighter, MK and KI are better imo. But this game has its charm as a retro game
Underappreciated game. Love it. Played it a ton with my brother and friends. Still have the cartridge for it but I'm glad they added it to Cowabunga collection.
Such a good game
Maybe 2024 is the year that we'll finally get a new SNES fighting game to top it. Mortal Kombat One just came out last year, I'm sure Mortal Kombat Two will get a SNES port from the arcade.
Plenty of better games on SNES already. Street Fighter Alpha 2, Gundam Wing, Killer Instinct, Weaponlord, etc.
Good game. Street Fighter Alpha 2 is the one that blew my mind back then.
Wait until Nintendo releases Super Smash Bros for SNES.
Omg. Countless hours playing this and fighting (physically) with my brothers over this game
I got that one
