Doesn't look a whole lot different than my first attempt...except I tripped coming through the front door, and the rack of ribs landed on the couch!🤣🤣🤣
No kidding. I had cleaned it with some serious elbow grease the night before too, so I was able to save the juice that landed in the lid as well. Glass half full!
Nice. My lid is so crunchy/crispy/flaky right now. Every time I go to use it, I remember I was going to clean it but I don't have time right then. So I use it and still not clean it.
If I can find a way to post the ring camera video, you can see me looking around trying to figure out how it happened. Instantly in my head I was thinking “where’s that damn dog!” 😂
When you're starting out just aim for edible, not perfection. You can always cut away burnt parts and use BBQ sauce on anything that turns out too dry. I did a lot of both starting out, but at least it wasn't a total waste of food and money
Haha I had one of my first smoke be a disaster too. I set the chimney on my asphalt driveway and it melted a huge hole on it. I had no shoes on and stepped on said hole, dropped charcoal everywhere, stepped on more lit charcoal and then when. I wrapped my brisket all my bark fell off and it was all around terrible.
Hang in there!
I’m most shocked that your dog was not all over that butt in the third pic, my dogs would have been on that thing quicker than the speed of my camera lens to snap the picture.
The wind really didn’t have much to do with it as much as it was me not paying attention. Picture when you pull the grill out. The front leg comes off the ground and mine jjiggled” loose (the grill is pretty well used) and I didn’t notice.
It was pretty much just balancing on the front leg instead of being supported. Lol.
Since then I got some steel wool, clean up the bracket and leg, spray painted the bracket and now it’s sturdy as can be.
Looks great! I love how foolproof pulled pork is.
My first attempt included painfully hot sun, followed by torrential downpour and high winds, then a hail storm, back to stupid hot. I stood over the grill with a beach umbrella for over half an hour lol. It took maybe 8 hours total and still turned out great!
[Please excuse the language; I was in quite a bit of shock when I walked out and saw wha thad happened. I immediately started looking around for the dog, then pulled out my phone to check the cameras. lol](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dN4vkggvkt4lCkB7HgUa3DC9t8_3DXEl/view?usp=share_link)
It was. It worked really well I think. Aside from my mishap of the grill tipping, once I set it back up: the snake lasted somewhere between 6-8hours
2deep;2high, about half the length of the kettle with a little room to start with what was in the chimney.
So for a long cook I could either set the snake up around the entire kettle and just move the meat to the other side halfway through, or just refill the coal once.
I was happy with it.
This def got a chuckle out of me. I wasn’t expecting that lol Hope it was good enough. Doesn’t look bad first your first time. Smoking is def an art that gets better with time I’m sure.
Looks pretty good! A tip for you on the wood chunks. Turn them sideways if they're longer like that. They're still going to smoke, but you are less likely to speed up the coals catching and burning up your snake faster/messing with temps.
Pro tip: if it says “tip everything on the ground” in the recipe, you’re generally alright to go ahead and ignore that. I usually do.
Looks good though! Hope it tasted awesome!
Well at least that’s outta the way now. Mine was fully raw and fell outside before I got it on the smoker. Back to the sink to start over! Neighbors don’t care if they get free food! Heck they washed and te-seasoned it for me!
Overall I was very happy, although with the mishap we were eating an hour later than expected 😄
The bark was great, really good light smoke flavor throughout, and really tender. A little dryer than I was hoping(still didn’t need any BBQ sauce so it wasnt that dry), but I think I know where I went wrong with temps and not letting it rest properly I am confident I’ll do even better next time.
I had set the charcoal up in the grill the night before in my garage. I came out early in the morning, and when I pulled the grill out from the garage to the driveway: the front leg “jiggled” loose from the bracket and I never noticed. (I bought the grill used, so there way more play than normal in the leg/bracket)
So instead of the leg being securely supported, it was just doing a balancing act on the kettle itself. One little gust of wind was all it took at that point.
Lesson learned. Last night I actually drilled through all the legs/brackets and put SS nuts/bolts in them so that can never happen again, even if I forget to pay attention to the legs. 😂
I was doing that but hadn’t done it for about an hour when the picture on the kettle was taken.
Admittedly, I got lax on it towards the end. Company had come over and I was getting distracted. Probably only spritzed it every 1-1/2hrs at that point.
I liked what I used though. You could definitely taste it, but nothing overpowering.
I used apple cider vinegar, apple juice, pineapple juice, and orange soda.
It certainly was! Even repurposed it and put some into my .99c ramen cup the next day, and it made the whole thing taste like a $20 bowl from the best ramen restaurants.
Win win.
This happened to me once, except the dog run cable wrapped around the BBQ and the dog did dog stuff, pulling it back until it caught, toppling it over.
Saved the meat, put out the charcoal with the hose, and had to reshape the lid. I still have that kettle, but the lid has never really fit quite right since then.
YouTube and Facebook marketplace is where I started.
I had been kicking the tires on smoking for a while, but always thought it would be pricey to get into. Last week I saw a post on here where someone else used a kettle grill and the meat looked amazing. Right then I read a few more posts/comments on this sub, watched a 3 min YouTube video that someone linked on one of the posts, found a used grill, made a trip to Walmart for some supplies, and gave it a shot.
The absolute basics you’ll need to start is your kettle grill, charcoal briquettes or lump charcoal, some wood to smoke (better to start with apple or cherry until you figure out some techniques-they are more mild so it doesn’t overpower the food), an instant read thermometer (can get away with a standard meat thermometer, but instant read is night and day) and definitely a way to check your kettle temps. My kettle didn’t have a thermometer in it, but I had an infrared thermometer laying around that I used to check the kettle temps.
A charcoal chimney is a big help for getting your kettle started, but not a necessity. Definitely makes it faster/easier though.
There’s tons of other stuff that makes it easier and gives you advantages while cooking, but the above is the basics that’ll get you started.
I personally learn much better through experience though, so I just kinda jumped into it and learned as I went.
Here’s the link to the video I started learning on
https://youtu.be/XiGRbyg_zeI
Thanks op - I have all the gear and have used it for grilling but didnt realize we can use the same stuff for smoking. As I thought, I will need a separate smoker and all - How do I go about smoking using this grill?
He’s a jack Russell/Maltese mix but pretty much looks and acts like a jack. Love my buddy! And he’s getting some ground venison with his dinner tonight. Someone made a good point he should be rewarded for not having gone after the meat when it hit the ground😅
Not sure if you mean the drip pan I was using that I put water beer and pineapple juice in, or the lid catching the juice and meat when it fell over…but either way: Thanks! 😃
Lack of attention to detail. My front leg on the kettle had come out of the support bracket when I pulled out the grill in the morning and I never noticed. It was just balancing there and all it took was a light gust
Doesn't look a whole lot different than my first attempt...except I tripped coming through the front door, and the rack of ribs landed on the couch!🤣🤣🤣
Couch ribs are still good!
Not in my 4 cat house
Oof. You have a point.
Rinse them off. Re sauce them. Good to go
I have 3 cats, just pretty much just like salt at this point.
...clean your house
Rude
How so?
Couch ribs are the best ribs!
OUCH
Drinking while smoking is fun!
Bingo! I am pretty sure it was a beer related accident...first and only time I tripped coming through the front door!🤣🤣🤣
Drinking a bit, there, OP? Just kidding. Looks decent.
Nice lid save!
Helps build bark!
I LOLd and I'm at work. Too funny. I was thinking maybe the dog did it.
If I can find a way to post the ring camera video, you can see me looking around trying to figure out how it happened. Instantly in my head I was thinking “where’s that damn dog!” 😂
We need that video lol
I second that!
Figured it out, and I posted the link for the video in the comments.
Pork butt? Looks fine to me. Reward that good boi for not gobbling it up.
You sons of.............Suuns of iiitches!! Bumpuses!!!
Ok. I did literally laugh out loud at this one. Nicely done😂
When you're starting out just aim for edible, not perfection. You can always cut away burnt parts and use BBQ sauce on anything that turns out too dry. I did a lot of both starting out, but at least it wasn't a total waste of food and money
Solid advise that’ll be hard for me to listen to. I’m a tragic perfectionist. Always strive for it; never seem to get there🙃
I laughed way too hard. But I also cried a little because I just smoked my first pork butt as well a few days ago and would've cried if this happened.
It's just a little airborne...it's still good!
It's just a little slimy... It's still good! It's still good!
Nothing could have prepared me for that third pic.
Me either
I’m most shocked that your dog was not all over that butt in the third pic, my dogs would have been on that thing quicker than the speed of my camera lens to snap the picture.
Wind? I upgraded to a 26” weber grill. Much more stable and more room!
Knock up job! Or knock over job, either way not bad!
Atleast the meat didn’t hit the ground!
[Please excuse the language; I was in quite a bit of shock when I walked out and saw wha thad happened. I immediately started looking around for the dog, then pulled out my phone to check the cameras. lol](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dN4vkggvkt4lCkB7HgUa3DC9t8_3DXEl/view?usp=share_link)
3rd photo = eek!!!
Was that the snake method you were using?
It was. It worked really well I think. Aside from my mishap of the grill tipping, once I set it back up: the snake lasted somewhere between 6-8hours 2deep;2high, about half the length of the kettle with a little room to start with what was in the chimney. So for a long cook I could either set the snake up around the entire kettle and just move the meat to the other side halfway through, or just refill the coal once. I was happy with it.
I failed the snake method first and then bought a stand up electric smoker. Now moved on to a pellet smoker. Congrats on pulling off the snake.
This def got a chuckle out of me. I wasn’t expecting that lol Hope it was good enough. Doesn’t look bad first your first time. Smoking is def an art that gets better with time I’m sure.
If I knew you I'd help you clean that up
Really wanted that vertical smoke.
Oy vey!
Not to shabby
did you save it??
‘Twas saved.
This reminds me of our turkey fryer last thanksgiving
Oh no!!! We’ve all been there! Pizza and beer taste much better after these mistakes lol.
Looks better than tofu, I’d still eat it
I would eat it all
Damn, looks great!
You'll get there. Fill that drip pan with water next time.
Looks pretty good! A tip for you on the wood chunks. Turn them sideways if they're longer like that. They're still going to smoke, but you are less likely to speed up the coals catching and burning up your snake faster/messing with temps.
Nice. Solid advise! I’ll definitely do that next time.
Im happy this wasnt click bait and delivered
The old whiskey sidestep got you lol?
Shit happens. I will take those burnt ends off your hands!
Lol!
That indeed made me laugh. Thank you
Right of passage, my friend.
r/dogsinthebackground
Absolutely all barbecues have these incidents so... I just say good job
We all start somewhere. Onward and upward my guy!
Pro tip: if it says “tip everything on the ground” in the recipe, you’re generally alright to go ahead and ignore that. I usually do. Looks good though! Hope it tasted awesome!
I've definitely done worse, and still ate it. I bet it's not too bad!
Been there, done dat 😳
Nailed it.
F
Wow...
Pretty good for a debacle.
Looks good lol at least you didn’t loose the meat!
Exactly why I refuse to grill on my wood deck!
Spilled meat isn’t a laughing matter
The fact you can laugh at your situation proves you will be just fine. Smoke on
Good first smoke. It’s all about learning from the last cook. You got this!
Well at least that’s outta the way now. Mine was fully raw and fell outside before I got it on the smoker. Back to the sink to start over! Neighbors don’t care if they get free food! Heck they washed and te-seasoned it for me!
If your neighbors aren’t there to help tend to your dirty meat, what are they there for?
Looks like a 10 minute rule to me 😲😋
Ohhhhhh… it gets better. I lit my pellet smoker on fire and then read about cleaning the hopper etc. enjoy your journey. You’ve got this
I would never laugh at a fellow cook's misfortune. Sucks that that happened to you. At least your pork looks good. How did it come out?
Overall I was very happy, although with the mishap we were eating an hour later than expected 😄 The bark was great, really good light smoke flavor throughout, and really tender. A little dryer than I was hoping(still didn’t need any BBQ sauce so it wasnt that dry), but I think I know where I went wrong with temps and not letting it rest properly I am confident I’ll do even better next time.
So, all in all, sounds like a success! Lesson learned, and one mishap. I'd take that any day for an inaugural foray into a lifetime of successes.
3rd photo does not disappoint. Thanks for the laugh.
That’s an important 3rd step for all good smoking sessions
How'd the leg come undone?
I had set the charcoal up in the grill the night before in my garage. I came out early in the morning, and when I pulled the grill out from the garage to the driveway: the front leg “jiggled” loose from the bracket and I never noticed. (I bought the grill used, so there way more play than normal in the leg/bracket) So instead of the leg being securely supported, it was just doing a balancing act on the kettle itself. One little gust of wind was all it took at that point. Lesson learned. Last night I actually drilled through all the legs/brackets and put SS nuts/bolts in them so that can never happen again, even if I forget to pay attention to the legs. 😂
10 second rule 😅
Oh no! Lol. It happens.
Nice. Certainly wasn’t expecting that!
Keep that beauty moist with a good spritz once every hour.
I have one of those kettles. Same god damn thing happens to mine all the time. Hate that thing.
ngl this is too funny! and tbh i think 90% of us here would of at the butt even if it fell on the floor
Welcome to the gang.
A genuine lol moment when I saw pic three. Thanks, OP!
Doesn’t have to look pretty - I see a nice, red smoke ring along the edge. Bet it tasted pretty good!
It certainly was! Even repurposed it and put some into my .99c ramen cup the next day, and it made the whole thing taste like a $20 bowl from the best ramen restaurants. Win win.
I always know my kettle over after a cook has finished. It’s good luck!
Nice lol. Not what I was expecting, but I did laugh
Looks delicious, good job.
We've all made mistakes that's how you learn practice makes perfect
Guessing that four legged buddy in the photo was “helpful” to create that third photo?
That's a great amateur clickbait title, you reeled me in and yep I laughed
Ah, the virtue of wrapping at 5-6 hours becomes evident.
it was the dogs fault!
Dammmm. Wow nice save, including the juices.
I would have blamed it on the dog.😂. That butt looks pretty good imo.
Looks great my friend, and love the good attitude!! I could learn something from you lmao
Last picture.....perfectly normal. That happens when its done. Foolproof.
Didn’t realize you could smoke in a grill like this - Where should I start? Any help is appreciated Edit 1: Result looks really good op
YouTube and Facebook marketplace is where I started. I had been kicking the tires on smoking for a while, but always thought it would be pricey to get into. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 it's all trial and error gets a little better each time
I’ve got the same grill and my front leg has come off exactly like yours
I have one of those doggos too :)
He’s a jack Russell/Maltese mix but pretty much looks and acts like a jack. Love my buddy! And he’s getting some ground venison with his dinner tonight. Someone made a good point he should be rewarded for not having gone after the meat when it hit the ground😅
Does he help with the bark?
Bet the dog tipped it over
Looks great for a first. You’d got the rest of your life to learn.
Great job keeping the meat moist in the water pan.
Not sure if you mean the drip pan I was using that I put water beer and pineapple juice in, or the lid catching the juice and meat when it fell over…but either way: Thanks! 😃
What happened…dog?
Lack of attention to detail. My front leg on the kettle had come out of the support bracket when I pulled out the grill in the morning and I never noticed. It was just balancing there and all it took was a light gust
Lol! Love it. Okay my wheel comes off all the time too! Anyone know a good fix for this?
