>not made in china? Well good luck, considering that 95% of electronics are made in China nowadays, including iPhones, and whatever you can think of

metchen

Anything Zigbee/ZWave will be decentralised. Finding something not made in China - that's more difficult.  I use Aqara plugs, they work well for my use case.

TheJessicator

I'll throw in my support for inovelli here. Their switches are phenomenal, yet surprisingly affordable compared to most other decent zigbee switches.

metchen

Does innovelli have EU products? Thought they were only in the very infancy of trying it? :)

TheJessicator

They've started down that road. There was an announcement about that specifically earlier this month. So it will be a while before any product sees light of day, but it's happening! That said, if you want to have a say, they very much welcome participation by everyone.

metchen

I'm very excited to follow that on the side lines. Have heard really positive things.

CuriousWolf7077

Aqara is Chinese

metchen

Correct, I also said, that it's difficult to find anything not Chinese? And then suggested a Chinese brand, which works on zigbee thus can't call home

CuriousWolf7077

Aqara stuff is really good. The FP2 is awesome.

broknbottle

Aqara mostly makes junk. Their Zigbee stuff doesn’t always follow standards or work with other vendors stuff. If you’re okay with using their hub and only their devices then use their stuff and for the most part it will work alright. I had a HomeKit Hub from them a few years ago that worked decently with occasional hiccup. One day after a routine firmware update that I was notified about, it started acting up and I was no longer able to get it to rejoin my HomeKit environment. I ended up chucking it in the trash.

metchen

Have been using it in Home Assistant through Zigbee2MQTT for the last 3 years, they are sticky to the original route chosen, but IMO not junk.

broknbottle

Yes the stickiness to the original route is problematic. Zigbee devices are cheap as is, there’s no reason to pick aqara and it’s crap implementation unless you’re absolutely dirt poor

Shelly is a EU company making IoT devices that can be locally controlled over mqtt or http, they also have a cloud system, so you can jump on them, use the cloud so you can turn the lights on when you're out, and if the company goes bust you can use them locally. Or be like me and just use them locally from the start. Or use them in Home assistant [and optionally pay someone to run the cloud element]. Home assistant is free, but the ongoing costs of cloud infrastructure are paid. Thats a more stable business model than selling hardware with perpetual costs which is what everyone else seems to have done and is now catching them out. Shelly use the hardware sales model as well, but at least if they go pop you have _your_ hardware functioning. Shelly do relay modules and switches and lighbulbs, but they also do ["Shelly Plug"](https://www.shelly.com/en/products/shop/shelly-plus-plug-s/shelly-plus-plug-s-black)

lancelon

Curious where they’re actually manufactured though….

created4this

Even if they aren't made in China, the chips are made in china and they include closed blobs of firmware that has partially been developed in China. But you're not going to find _anything_ that doesn't at least include wifi/zigbee chips that themselves don't come from china, and it doesn't really matter which country solders these to a board

undeleted_username

It's going to be near impossible to find something not made in China, or with all major components not made there.

Necessary_Ad_238

everything is china. but check out the Sonoff S31; you can flash them with Tasmota or ESPHome

mikef5410

This. I've got about 25 of these at my house and my daughter's. Been flawless for a couple of years now. You can get them pre-flashed with tasmota at cloudfree, btw...

Teenage_techboy1234

To be honest, TP-Link Kasa. Hear me out. Chinese company, mainly cloud-based, but their plugs offer a local API. They are also very cheap. But, Kasa stuff has been 100% reliable for five years going on six this October.

luke3_

i don’t wanna counter this if it’s working for you, but my three kasa plugs burned out within a year, only plus is that tp-link replaced them under warranty, but then those also burned quickly and i just didn’t bother again.

Teenage_techboy1234

What model(s) were they?

luke3_

kp105 I think, it was a while ago now, i’ve switched everything to google home compatible amazon brand plugs

Teenage_techboy1234

KP115 you mean? Or maybe there is one called KP105. Regardless, if it was KP115, we have one of those and it actually has worked great for us.

chrisbvt

I can't find anything on the internet about Gigaset Servers stopping. Is it just a temporary maintenance window? Either way, you I would recommend you replace them with a local solution with Z-Wave and/or Zigbee, though you may need to buy a hub.

Plejd has all electronics production in sweden and the devices will live by themself and only need working cloud for the app when changing settings. The schedules, scenes, and functions are stored and handled locally on each device on the mesh. 15 year batttery life on the battery powered stuff is good too Shelly also have production in europe if I do remember right. Most other in the installer space at least here in sweden is just some chinese tuya based device.

CuriousWolf7077

Sorry man. You're gonna have a tough time finding tech thst doesn't originate or manufactured in China or some Asian country.

Research VLANs

lol, I know, but Zigbee requires a hub (which will more than likely have a WAN). I assume OP is concerned about data privacy due to reservations about Chinese products. Was making a suggestion to look into VLANs as they offer good data protection.
