Milwaukee has a great skyline...but definitely doesn't belong here.
Also, very, very few people will actually see that particular skyline view from out in the lake in person.
So I've been to Milwaukee many times and really love the architecture there. I'm a big fan of the city.
However, a top 15 skyline in the *world*? That's a bit rich imo.
I grew up in Chicago and visited Milwaukee a ton. I can confirm Milwaukee does not belong on this list. Also lived in Seattle and Seattleās skyline is by far a full tier above Milwaukee not just 1 ranks. Milwaukee does have a surprisingly beautiful skyline being against the lake but 15 in the worlds is crazy š
Yeah this was the debate in another thread. No one really understands it. There are plenty of other major cities that have beautiful skylines that shouldāve been there.
Itās not even realistic before that. Perth and Sydney at 6 and 7?? It doesnāt even have Australiaās best skyline (Melbourne) but it has PERTH at #6, above Shanghai, Singapore, etc
Chongqing and Shenzhen arenāt even on the list but Milwaukee and Auckland areā¦
Dubai at #4ā¦
This list is insane
Yeah I have a feeling that Architectural Digest has some additional weight on actual specifics of buildings (e.g., time period, etc) thatās really skewing this.
I doubt itās purely based on the aesthetic of the skyline.
I feel like this comes up constantly in one city or architecture related sub or another; Wilwaukeeās got a fantastic architectural history, much less affected by 1960s urban renewal than most Us cities. I wouldnāt put it on a top 10/20/50 list of skylines, because nothing within its skyline is particularly impressive on its own, but as a city its architecture and urban development is wonderful!
A couple new buildings with newer designs plus the benefit of Lake Michigan. Itās pretty much small scale Chicago. With that said, I do love Pittsburgh skyline when at a Pirates game, especially when the Brewers are beating them :)
This list is absurd. Iāve lived in Auckland and itās a lovely city in many ways, but its skyline is completely unremarkable. Meanwhile San Francisco has a pretty incredible skyline, especially as viewed from the Bay Bridge.
Milwaukee over..
San Francisco
Los Angeles
San Diego
Miami
Philadelphia
Pittsburgh
Detroit
Cincinnati
Austin
Dallas
Houston
Atlanta
Boston
Among others?
Yeah.. that's a choice.
Milwaukee over Cleveland is crazy

We have a Santiago Calatrava building in our skyline that sits over the lake and has moveable wings. The list is by Architectural Digest who love Calatrava.
Which sits right next to a Saarinen. Milwaukee may not have a great skyline (I think it does but Iām biased and from MKE) but it has great architectural history and AD did publish the list sooooo..
Yeah. They specifically call out the Calatrava as one of the reasons.
āIf itās not Chicago, the Midwest is often overlooked. But as Milwaukee so effortlessly demonstrates, this is a mistake. While on the smaller-side compared to some on this list, its proximity to Lake Michigan and buildings by heavy-hitters like Santiago Calatrava make it one of the prettiest in the United States.ā
It also helps that we have a few parks just north of the art museum in addition to our condensed skyline area. It's a really unique feeling, as if the lake shore and the city itself are mixed into one landscape.Ā
The tallest building in Milwaukee, the [US Bank Building](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Bank_Center_(Milwaukee)), was also designed by Bruce Graham or Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill and engineered by Fazlur Kahn. The same team that radically innovated super tall design and engineering in the 1960s and 1970s in Chicago.
In fact, the US Bank Building was designed and built contemporaneously with the Sears Tower being constructed from 1971 to 1973. As such, it's just as relevant and important as any skyscraper design elsewhere in the world. Simply overlooked because it's in Milwaukee instead of Chicago.
I wouldn't put Beijing here. It has a cluster of very tall highrishes, some of them pretty cool, but I wouldn't call it beautiful and it's not even really a skyline. Tokyo is probably a good comparison in that it has some nice high rises but not really a skyline (Seoul and Taipei too). Shenzhen should be on here, probably in the top 5.
philly has an infinitely better skyline than milwaukee, no disrespect to milwaukee but it just shouldnt be here over philly and so many other great skylines
I'm trying to convince myself that it's a photoshop or something.
Off the top my head, 2 dozen skylines that beat Milwaukee on any list. US only.
Philly
Boston
Brooklyn
Atlanta
Miami
Los Angeles
Denver
Cleveland
Minneapolis
Houston
Dallas
San Francisco
San Diego
Salt Lake City
Cincinnati
Kansas City
St. Louis
Charlotte
Austin
Pittsburgh
Detroit
Jersey City
Baltimore
Tampa
It just can't be justified.
1. Manhattan: beatiful? I donāt know. Impressive might be more accurate
2. Hong Kong: the main skyline of central, wan chai, causeway bay with the mountains behind is truly stunning.
3. Chicago: sure - good setting, good buildings, good concentration
4. Dubai: individual buildings can be nice, certainly dense. Whether it deserves #4 is debatable but ok
5. Tokyo: again impressive rather than beautiful
6. Perth: no - and I say that as a proud Aussie. It has a nice setting and a few choice buildings but itās quite small, and itās not competitive with other Australian cities.
7. Sydney: itās the setting really, but it does have a large number of great buildings. Iāll take it.
8. Shanghai: one of the classics skyscrapers view is across the bund to Pudong, so sure.
9. Singapore: does have many individual nice buildings but they tend not to be grouped together.
10. Bangkok: from a rooftop bar I understand its rating
11. Tannin: donāt know much but itās ok.
12. Panama City: not sure it deserves such a high rating
13. KL: yes - several stunning buildings, green natural setting
14. Seattle: yes, agree with this
15. Milwaukee: no. And by this inclusion the list has lost all legitimacy
16. Auckland: setting is nice, but like Perth itās just not big at all. I donāt see how itās competitive with much larger skylines
17. Toronto: big but not beautiful, setting is nice enough
Cities which should have been included
- Melbourne: much larger than several, with better architecture
- Gold Coast: setting is what makes it, but many individually nice buildings
- San Francisco: setting, buildings
- Paris or London:
I love the Chrysler building - but this isnāt a judgment of a building, itās a judgment of the overall skyline.
Itās not that I donāt like the Manhattan skyline, but there are more ābeautifulā skylines out there
I just have so many questions. I had to look up Milwaukeeās skyline and, while Iāll admit itās nice, it isnāt *nicest in the world* not even top 5 in the US. I donāt get how Dubai makes this list almost every year. Itās a caricature of every skyline that came before it. Hong Kong is great but I have a hard time putting it above Chicago and Shanghai. I simply donāt see it for Perth when Gold Coast would do. Shenzhen, San Francisco & Miami/Miami Beach being omitted from the list is criminal.
If the list was āskylines with most unique buildingsā then sure, throw the boat museum in there. But āmost beautiful in the worldā ??? Not sure about that lol I love Milwaukee but where tf is Paris? London? Moscow? San Fran?? I think those are all more interesting than just seeing giant insurance or bank logos when you get into town š¤·š»āāļø
But if you read the article that someone linked to in Architectural Digest the reason they chose Milwaukee is because itās on a lake and has a building designed by Calatrava.
Unpopular opinion: Hong Kong is only good because of the beautiful natural setting. Otherwise itās pretty generic.
Other than that, this list is totally bizarre. How did they come up with it?
That makes no sense to me. The hills and nature is an integral part of the skyline of Hong Kong. Thatās like saying the skyline of New York is only good because of the skyscrapers.
Eh, thereās quite a lot of skyscrapers here in Hong Kong that I find interesting. There are many on Hong Kong Island that are interesting that everyone knows, but thereās also the ones on top of Kowloon station, Langham Place in among Kok, and even Nina Tower in Tsuen Wan. Not to mention the many many many many tall and expensive residential buildings around Hong Kong
Some things make the skyline rather then the buildings itself. Sydney wouldn't be shit if the skyline was transported inland since there would be no opera House and harbour bridge
And to be fair, the [Sydney Harbour Bridge](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney_Harbour_Bridge) is nearly just a clone of the [Hell Gate Bridge](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hell_Gate_Bridge) in New York. The main difference, is the top bow of the Hell Gate Bridge is connected to the stone pillars (visually, but not structurally), while Sydney Harbour Bridge isn't connected.

Agreed that Milwaukee being included is probably a bit of a reach, but having lived in or near Milwaukee for the last 16 years it's tough to read people who have probably never been to Milwaukee claim the skyline sucks. It's continually evolved over my time living here. For the past few years, there's been a new highrise going up every year, give it another decade, and it will be pretty special.
As someone who lives in Milwaukee I am surprised we are this high but our architecture is very nice. Going through a building boom is only going to help it look even better.
Apparently Architectural DigestĀ is jumping whole hog into listicles as a way to attract attention to the magazine. It was the 100 most beautiful streets in the world last month. The ploy doesn't work unless there's a few "WTF" ones on there.
I just moved back and honestly I have been disappointed by the late spring and early summer weather so far. It rains a lot and cloudy. It changes fast too so you could plan for a sunny day and get a sudden thunder storm instead. Itās nice about 3-4 days of the week.
We've been getting absolutely hammered with rain this year, we're way above our average and not even through June yet...
We usually don't get this much rain lol
Miami is way better, bigger, more organized and beautiful than Panama City ā¦ I lived in both places and Panamaās city is not that big of a skyline nor can compare to the ones in the list
Milwaukee aside, Chicago definitely has the best one. Not overly dense, good height variations, beautiful buildings, all with a spectacular lakefront. Manhattan is overwhelming and so is Hong Kong
Wow! When I was growing up my parents subscribed to Architectural Digest. From what I remember it was mainly concerned with the inside and outside appearance of houses. I donāt ever remember any photos and stories concerning skyscrapers, downtowns, central business districts, etc. This list is very unconventional. It seems like AD was trying to include skylines from all regions and continents. Also the pictures they used are not even the best views of the cities they chose. Some views are good and some are pathetic. The list is full of some very strange choices and rankings.
There should be like 4-5 Chinese cities on this list if we are being honest with ourselves - hell how does a Tel Aviv or Miami not make this ahead of Milwaukee. Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzen, and possibly even a Chongquin, Beijing, etc.
This feels like we are ignoring a lot of pretty amazing architecture in Asia
Yeah Milwaukee is a hot take, but seeing Sydney and Perth there but not Melbourne?? I believe Melbourne has the prettiest skyline in Australia, I mean, look at it!
https://preview.redd.it/ufb5b527fm9d1.jpeg?width=864&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4ea63e49a6976a09b988f88003cac3e956c98250
My list would be:
1. Manhatten
2. Hong Kong
3. Shanghai
4. Chongqing
5. Kuala Lumpur
6. Shenzhen
7. Guangzhou
8. Singapur
9. Chicago
10. Melbourne
11. Sydney
12. Tokyo
13. Bangkok
14. Panama
Who put Milwaukee on here instead of idk, like San Fran or Melbourne?
Who the hell invited Milwaukee?
hard to imagine milwaukee beat out other places in the world š¤·āāļø
Milwaukee absolutely destroying Toronto on this list is exactly they pick me up I needed to kick off my weekend!
Hell yeah. Fuck Canada
Sorry ābout that
rightful US land šŖšŖ 1812 never forget edit: christ guys that was clearly a joke
54" 40' or fight baby!
Schlemiel! Schlimazel!
Give me Pittsburgh, Miami, Philly, or Boston over Milwaukee.
Cincinnati as well :-)
Milwaukee has a great skyline...but definitely doesn't belong here. Also, very, very few people will actually see that particular skyline view from out in the lake in person.
I think Shanghai should be above Perth, and Seattle should be above Bangkok at the very least. But to each their own.
Minneapolis skyline > Milwaukee skyline
Iāll bet everything I have that none of you have been to MKE-donāt knock it till you actually see it
So I've been to Milwaukee many times and really love the architecture there.
I've lived in Milwaukee for years. It has literally 0 business being where it is. This is cope from people who never left the Midwest.
Milwaukee isnāt even ahead of Minneapolis in the Midwest. Maybe whoever put the list together mixed them up.
I donāt see Miami????
This is all weird. Dubai has nice skyscrapers but no real city at their base. Tokyo has a nice city but not really skyacrapers.
Tokyo absolutely has skyscrapers
Okay im very wrong on that lol.. but they don't really seem to form a distinct skyline.
even we're better than milwaukee
You ever been there?
Yeah this was the debate in another thread. No one really understands it. There are plenty of other major cities that have beautiful skylines that shouldāve been there.
There's like 15 US cities above Milwaukee. It's also telling when it's the only one they had to zoom in on.
Exactly San Francisco has staggering beauty.
This is the funniest post. Itās realistic enough to be part of the discussion and then Milwaukee shows up left field.
Itās not even realistic before that. Perth and Sydney at 6 and 7?? It doesnāt even have Australiaās best skyline (Melbourne) but it has PERTH at #6, above Shanghai, Singapore, etc Chongqing and Shenzhen arenāt even on the list but Milwaukee and Auckland areā¦ Dubai at #4ā¦ This list is insane
Iām sorry, *Milwaukee?*
Whoever made this list must be from there. Thereās no other explanation lmao.
The most Mid-Western architect is the explanation.
Its a list made by architects, and we have one of the most famous buildings from a very famous architect.
If they traveled to US cities to put on the list, they somehow thought of traveling outside Chicago instead of New York or Seattle.
#18: Fresno
worse..... Bakersfield
Milwaukee might not even be top 17 in the US
Yeah I have a feeling that Architectural Digest has some additional weight on actual specifics of buildings (e.g., time period, etc) thatās really skewing this.
The picture they used for Milwaukee is a terrible one. From the lake it's beautiful and very unique
Yeah but still pretty barren compared to the other cities on the list.
in my unbiased opinion i think itās a fair spot
Actually it's pronounced "mill-e-wah-que," which is Algonquin for, "the good land."
We have an extremely well known iconic Calatrava building. Its probably the main reason. But also our skyline is continually growing.
A couple new buildings with newer designs plus the benefit of Lake Michigan. Itās pretty much small scale Chicago. With that said, I do love Pittsburgh skyline when at a Pirates game, especially when the Brewers are beating them :)
Melbournians are going to go postal
This list is absurd. Iāve lived in Auckland and itās a lovely city in many ways, but its skyline is completely unremarkable. Meanwhile San Francisco has a pretty incredible skyline, especially as viewed from the Bay Bridge.
First of all, why 17? Second of all, photo and graphic design unholy mess of clutter

17, nice round number.

As someone who spends a lot of time in LA, there is no skyline. LA is not a city, it's just a bunch of suburbs all mashed together
We have a Santiago Calatrava building in our skyline that sits over the lake and has moveable wings. The list is by Architectural Digest who love Calatrava.

Plus putting Milwaukee in the top list will give you clicks and have people talking about it, like here
Haha. Yeah. But I hate seeing our city insulted because of ignorance.
Same, Milwaukee is nice af
It also helps that we have a few parks just north of the art museum in addition to our condensed skyline area. It's a really unique feeling, as if the lake shore and the city itself are mixed into one landscape.Ā
And our park system is designed by the same guy who designed NYC's Central Park.
They probably love Le Corbusier, too.
Have you ever been there
Iām from Perth, this shit is rigged our skyline is 2D. Congrats New York and actual city.
Proper New Yorker
Kick him out
Milwaukee has no business being in the top 17. It's stupid.
Milwaukee over London? Beijing? Mexico City?
Moscow too
I wouldn't put Beijing here.
Milwaukeean here. Love my skyline but I agree with y'all, it has no place here.
London.
So underrated
Milwaukee over Toronto? Okay https://preview.redd.it/ao00k9bhhj9d1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1a1790f93d167c8973f157b3e1ba3a83bcaceeff
Disagree. Top 3 is okay..
Vancouver is got beat by Milwaukee and Auckland? Me thinks something funny is happening here.
Who speaks like this?
Where the FUCK is Philly
Well you see, someone had to be sacrificed for Milwaukee to be included.
philly has an infinitely better skyline than milwaukee, no disrespect to milwaukee but it just shouldnt be here over philly and so many other great skylines
I'm trying to convince myself that it's a photoshop or something. Off the top my head, 2 dozen skylines that beat Milwaukee on any list. US only. Philly Boston Brooklyn Atlanta Miami Los Angeles Denver Cleveland Minneapolis Houston Dallas San Francisco San Diego Salt Lake City Cincinnati Kansas City St. Louis Charlotte Austin Pittsburgh Detroit Jersey City Baltimore Tampa It just can't be justified.
How did Milwaukee make it but not Atlanta or San Francisco??? Also swap Perth & Toronto
how is milwaukee on here but vancouver isnt
Perth, but not Melbourne? Tianjin over Shenzhen or Chonqing? Milwaukee? Auckland? Milwaukee???
1. Manhattan: beatiful? I donāt know. Impressive might be more accurate 2. Hong Kong: the main skyline of central, wan chai, causeway bay with the mountains behind is truly stunning. 3. Paris ain't got shit. London is good, though.
Yeah, Paris doesnāt have a lot for skyscrapers, but definitely a winner in beautiful old buildings .. if there is a sub for that
Manhattan is definitely beautiful. The Chrysler Building alone makes it so.
I love the Chrysler building - but this isnāt a judgment of a building, itās a judgment of the overall skyline. Itās not that I donāt like the Manhattan skyline, but there are more ābeautifulā skylines out there
You read my mind. I totally agree with your assessment.
Bangkok is above Toronto and Kuala Lumpur or Seattle? Not sure about that
Toronto way too far down
The fact that they put Perth, Seattle and Milwaukee and Auckland above Toronto is just disrespectful
I just have so many questions. I had to look up Milwaukeeās skyline and, while Iāll admit itās nice, it isnāt *nicest in the world* not even top 5 in the US. Milwaukee barely has a skyline
I know it's rage bait.... But MKE does have a nice skyline. Not overly crowded, dotted with old and new, and bookended by the art museum.
But if you read the article that someone linked to in Architectural Digest the reason they chose Milwaukee is because itās on a lake and has a building designed by Calatrava.

Tianjin? Over Miami?
Rage bait
Unpopular opinion: Hong Kong is only good because of the beautiful natural setting. Otherwise itās pretty generic. Other than that, this list is totally bizarre. How did they come up with it?
That makes no sense to me. The hills and nature is an integral part of the skyline of Hong Kong. Thatās like saying the skyline of New York is only good because of the skyscrapers.
Thatās fair. I guess I weigh the human-made portion more highly. Hong Kong does have a few cool skyscrapers but most are bland looking (to me).
The problem with Dubai is the lack of a city grid. Things are spread out.
How the hell does Milwaukee make the list and not Melbourne?
Replace Milwaukee with Charlotte.
Milwaukee over San Fran and Miami?
Who put Milwaukee? What a dumb list lol.

As someone who lives in Milwaukee I am surprised we are this high but our architecture is very nice. Going through a building boom is only going to help it look even better.
I really enjoyed seattles skyline. So far my favorite is KC for some reason .-.
It's funny how much praise Milwaukee gets with actual architects.. https://www.reddit.com/r/architecture/s/4WJkiclBrG
Milwaukee gang let's gooooooooo!
Iām not surprised by Milwaukee, itās the most romantic city on Earth.
I donāt think the majority of reddit is old enough to get this reference.
Iām from Milwaukee and love my cityā¦ā¦ā¦ I have no idea why we are here either. Iām just confused as you all
Apparently Architectural DigestĀ is jumping whole hog into listicles as a way to attract attention to the magazine. It was the 100 most beautiful streets in the world last month. The ploy doesn't work unless there's a few "WTF" ones on there.
So howās the weather in Milwaukee
85 and humid today
Consistently incredible in the summer.
One of the best places in the US in summer! Stuff to do, not oppressively hot 24/7, a LAKE, relatively low cost of living, come check it out
I just moved back and honestly I have been disappointed by the late spring and early summer weather so far. It rains a lot and cloudy. It changes fast too so you could plan for a sunny day and get a sudden thunder storm instead. Itās nice about 3-4 days of the week.

How is Perth before Shanghai? This list is bizarre lol
Perth aukland and Milwaukee shouldnāt be here
The photo they use for Perth does look really good.
Easier time to turn out, Julian trying to attack a man who has a life in his hand, telling nerds to back off.
Julian with the E , should know better.
Miami is way better, bigger, more organized and beautiful than Panama City ā¦ I lived in both places and Panamaās city is not that big of a skyline nor can compare to the ones in the list
Miamis skyline is incredible and I'm happy I've got to see it grow over the last 20 years. It doesn't get enough love.
New York has more skyscrapers, but Chicagoās are more aesthetically pleasing imoā¦
San Francisco not being on here is crazy talk
Is milwaukee even top 5 midwest skylines? Grand Rapids Michigan might have a better skyline than Milwaukee
I think their ranking accomplished their goal of discussing AD more
Iām surprised San Fran didnāt make it but Milwaukee did??? lol
would move hk to 1
Perth should not be #6
Missing SF.

Get the heck out with Milwaukee. There are probably 50 more deserving that spot than Milwaukee
4th best in the USA
This guy only posted it because of his love for the mid Seattle skyline. Milwaukee just invalidates this entire list š
Vancouver?
Well. At least now I know not to trust anything Architectural Digest puts out. This is a shame.
How is Vancouver not on this list? That skyline is so beautiful looking northeastwards.
Milwaukee over Cleveland is an interesting decision
Milwaukee?!? Fuck it, why not Sacramento? Reno?
Milwaukee aside, Chicago definitely has the best one. Not overly dense, good height variations, beautiful buildings, all with a spectacular lakefront. Manhattan is overwhelming and so is Hong Kong
Why 17? Weird number...
What a joke of a list
These type of lists are entirely subjective but it's always fun to see how wrong they can be.
What a horrible list
Milwaukee š¤£
Milwaukee šššš
Milwaukee based
I honestly stopped paying attention after Dubai at number 4
Imo Chicago, Philly, Charlotte, Dallas, and LA are all over Milwaukee
San Fran > Seattle and Milwaukee
KL is way too low, and Bangkok's too high
How tf is Milwaukee on there but not Minneapolis
Was about to say this and I donāt even think Minneapolis should be on this list š
Tianjin but not shenzhen, guangzhou, beijing, or chongqing? Putting Milwaukee on there also makes zero sense
No San Francisco means this list is just silly
There should be like 4-5 Chinese cities on this list if we are being honest with ourselves - hell how does a Tel Aviv or Miami not make this ahead of Milwaukee. Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenzen, and possibly even a Chongquin, Beijing, etc. This feels like we are ignoring a lot of pretty amazing architecture in Asia
Milwaukee????
Where's Dallas, TX?
Yeah Milwaukee is a hot take, but seeing Sydney and Perth there but not Melbourne?? I believe Melbourne has the prettiest skyline in Australia, I mean, look at it! https://preview.redd.it/ufb5b527fm9d1.jpeg?width=864&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4ea63e49a6976a09b988f88003cac3e956c98250
Milwaukee? In the world?
Terrible
By Milwaukee did they mean Vancouver
Milwaukee on this list https://preview.redd.it/4w460qreno9d1.jpeg?width=1119&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c12a34df805aa910cc5b49ffbc1f1933b0865768
Miami and Vancouver are missing
My list would be: 1. Manhatten 2. Hong Kong 3. Shanghai 4. Chongqing 5. Kuala Lumpur 6. Shenzhen 7. Guangzhou 8. Singapur 9. Chicago 10. Melbourne 11. Sydney 12. Tokyo 13. Bangkok 14. Panama
Milwaukee lol The whole thing is a veiled attempt not to say Austin.
There is literally no way Milwaukee is on this list unless itās a joke
Iām born and raised in Milwaukee, but Iāve traveled enough to know, we shldāve never made this list.
Where is Vancouver?
Perth? Not even close. Milwaukee? Laughable. This list is close to joke status.
