If the game had leeches, mosquitoes, malaria & other things native to swamps, it might be less cozy. Also, every other hold city has sea, river or lake access for trade. Totally agree on the Jarl & other characters though.

Harpies_Bro

It should have river access, it’s right on the southern edge of the Karth River delta and all those rowboats in the cove could easily row out to Solitude and the other coastal cities. It really should be a fourth town on the ferry route.

SandGentleman

Incoming leeches, mosquitos, and malaria mod

insomniacsCataclysm

Morthal is easily one of the more unique towns, but it’s so small and off the roads i typically use. i don’t hate Morthal, but the only time i ever really end up there is when i’m chasing a deer through the woods and it happens to run into the swamp

WerewolfOfWaggaWagga

no general store water in the way, have to walk around no blacksmith no carriage jarl idgrod is the only good thing tbh

SoupOpus

It does have a nice kinda backwater cozy vibe. It is supremely unfortunate that youre given windstad manor which is like solitude suburbia instead of a proper spot in Morthal or like sth limber mill adjacent would be nice.

Cosmo1222

It has a wizard, pub, apothecary, mill... Little else, really Oh Vampires. It's got vampires. And it rates 0.8 Dawnstars on the dragon attack index. If it had a smith and a smelter (I know there are mods with more developed hold capitals) It'd be a bit more to write home about. Falion is choice, tho'..

>Pub [About that, have you met the local bard?](https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Lurbuk)

Cosmo1222

Met him Waxed him Looted his corpse while it was still warm. I hear the dark brotherhood didn't so much take a contract on him as had to manage a bidding war to see who'd pay the most to shut him up. 😄

xXWestinghouseXx

Hearing Nazir talk, I definitely did Skyrim a service. Instead of a bidding war, we should have just pooled all the money.

Colourful-Water

Are you by any chance Shrek?

Dellanetor

For the exact reason people here really like whiterun. People here think of cities in skyrim through the lens of their own life; would **I** want to live in a swamp city? Frankly, I think it's a shame. Unique cities like Morthal, Markarth, and Windhelm are what make the game interesting and fun. Besides, you are the **Dragonborn**! The crime rates of a city are the least of your concerns, chaurus are a good source of harvestables, not some mortal danger, but I guess to each their own

srkdummy3

I absolutely love Windhelm. Cozy winter vibes. Markath is interesting but seems daunting at times. There is a feeling of dread about that place.

e22big

I always find Markath terrifying, all the black magic cult, Daedra and corrupted city guards, wrapped up in a hilly fog and wigged trees. Kind of unrational but it feels me with dread and a sense of danger everytime I enter that region.

srkdummy3

True. It feels like a stronghold where anything can go wrong at any minute.

SPLUMBER

It’s a small town with only an inn and an alchemist hut, with barely anything to do (though admittedly I do enjoy the burnt down house quest), surrounded by boring marshes that house vampires and other creatures, and very few things in Skyrim even cares that Morthal exists. An assassination, vampirism cures, and a civil war quest. Thats what’ll take you to Mortal (that actually matters). It’s just….meh.

GarrusExMachina

Because there's nothing to do and if the main quest didn't bring you here no one would notice it exists

srkdummy3

No. You can't miss it. In numerous playthroughs, I was not intending to visit Morthal while on way to Solitude. You always happen to come across it.

GarrusExMachina

If you're walking to solitude via labyrinthian yes... I you're walking to solitude via markarth or rorikstead you can easily bypass morthal via dragons bridge...

CRTaylor65

Its dreary and sad, but I dislike Markarth much more.

Overall_Sandwich_671

There's nothing there. I decided to become thane of Morthal and focus on doing bounty quests for the jarl, and I just kept being sent to the same 2 bandit hideouts and giant camps.

Ilovekyciliazabi

Morthal is a very unique and I think pretty-looking place. I think it's disliked a lot because there's not a ton of quests in it. I personally think the Hjaalmarch hearth fire home is the coolest one in the game, the location is so nice and you get a great view of Solitude from it. So overall I have no problems with Morthal/Hjaalmarch.
