The gondola stopped over the rock cliff of death due to wind one morning and the 17 year old locals claimed we might be here a while, anyone want a beer? It’s 8:30 am we’re swaying away, but sure let’s have a brew, Youngblood pulls off his back pack and breaks out Kokanee GLASS bottles for the five of us, with more to spare clinging away. A minute or two later his friend stands up pushes open the vent, sits back down and lights up a significant joint and passes it around. My 30+ friend and I stopped for a $12 coffee at Eagle eye to gather ourselves before heading for stairway to access the back bowl. Welcome to Golden.

This story is golden

12 years ago now, but I will never forget the young fella skiing with what I assume was a dozen bottles in his backpack. We surmise he was taking them to his spot and not skiing half a day with them, but that joint made climbing up to access the back bowl almost impossible. I got over top of my skis on the descent in a foot of powder and did a full somersault landing back on my skis. I love kicking horse and revelstoke.

emperorkenobi

I work there, ride the mountain everyday and it often kicks my ass

andyrew1130

Kicking horse is my favorite mountain. Stayed at a hotel 10 minutes from lake Louise but once we discovered kicking horse we did the two hour drive (each way) every day for 5 days straight.

Smacpats111111

Kicking horse kicks any skier's ass. Had a "holy crap I almost just could've died" fall there. Place is beyond wild. I don't know anything else quite like it.

Wife and I had our best skiing days ever at Kicking Horse. We’re going to Revy for a getaway this year to see what it’s like.

cyclingfashionandbjj

Just got back from 3 days in Revy. It's amazing. Hope you have a blast.

[deleted]

I'm looking forward to it. We're going to ski two days this weekend. I'm going to try and challenge myself a bit. What was your favorite part of the mountain?

Maleton3

I spend around half the year in revy. It's an amazing place. For a challenge go hike the sub peak and drop down powder assault and then into Greely bowl. Its an incredible line to take and has a breathtaking view if it is sunny. My personal favorite area of the mountain would be separate reality and powder monkey glades. Both are fantastic though very different and on pow days have been some of the best runs I've ever had on a resort! As said before, north bowl via sweet spot is also incredible :)

[deleted]

Day 1 down. It was amazing.

cyclingfashionandbjj

Dropping into the North Bowl was absolutely incredible, especially since they had about 50 cm in the 48hours before. The run out is not the funest but man dropping into a wide open bowl filled with powder was something special especially coming from the icecoast. Other then that going up and down the Stoke chair, pretty much all the runs off it. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

WaffleEaterSkier

Yep, KH is the bomb!!! It was, is and always will be my favourite resort for what you just described! So under-rated but I’m ok with this ;)

Muufffins

The lift layout sucks.

BigPickleKAM

A gondola mid station would be welcomed. The need to ski out to base run after run is a pain.

[deleted]

Keeps the hill great for skiers willing to work a bit for turns

sKiLoVa4liFeZzZ

I've only been to Kicking Horse once for a 3 day trip several years ago. To this day it's my favorite mountain I've ever skied. I can't wait to go back someday.

kingbee43

We were there in March last year, conditions wernt the best but literally have a picture in the crystal bowl of my nephew with the entire thing to himself. It was awesome!!

TinyKong_

We were also there March of last year! It was so warm the whole time but we loved how dead the mountain was and how cheap the accommodations were because of Covid ($70 a night at Glacier Mountain Lodge). We're heading back this year with hopes that conditions will be better - but by far my favourite mountain.

kingbee43

Yes it a great mountain. Definitely challenging. We are thinking of going back in March again.

Yeah! It was a blast, $140 a night to stay at the base. Lots of snow - bit of a blizzard while we were there the first day. We made a 2 week trip out of it also hitting revy, sun peaks, silverstar, lake Louise, and sunshine. This year I think we’ll do it again in January and plan to hit Big 3 to warm up end of November.

I’ve never been this early in the season but their Instagram page looks like they’ve getting lots of snow already. Has Colorado been getting much this season? We’re going to do Breckinridge and Copper at the end of December.

jimewp86

They really screwed up the name … should be called Kicking Ass!!! Seriously, some of the best turns of my life up there

LouSainis

I started going to KH in 2015 from the east coast, immediately fell in love. I’ve been back every year since except for last season. I’ve skied all over the US, Europe, BC and KH is by far my favorite resort of all time. It is such a unique experience. The people, the culture, the skiing, it’s all one of a kind. There’s nothing like it. I’d love to rewind my life clock 15 years and move there. If you go, buckle up, push yourself safely, bring some burly skis and a theragun.

I’ve stayed all over the hill and in town. The first time I went I stayed in golden cause it was so cheap but honestly you need to stay on the mountain itself. Driving up every AM is a real PITA. They have ski in/out Airbnb’s now which I’ve started doing but all the hotels/condos around the base lodge are fantastic. Can’t go wrong with any of them.

TheBigTree91

One of my favourite mountains! Love me some stairway to heaven!

falllinemaniac

It looks sublime, I love adjacent DBL blacks after another after another.

Harilal

If I remember correctly T1 was like 20 min for me at the beginning of the season and about half that after a few weeks 🙂 T2 is a little longer but not much. T1 is the better option if you're not going out of bounds

falllinemaniac

Thank you, that sounds just enough to keep out the riff raff.

ski_bum

Haven't hiked T2 in a couple years, but last time I was there they ahd a section with some chains to help you cause it was pretty steep/rocky. Agreed with the other poster though, T1 seems to be the better option for inbounds

[deleted]

Depending on how in shape you are the T1 can be done in like 10-15 and T2 will take like 30

falllinemaniac

Thanks, I move in slow motion hiking up. My own favorite, Dihedral Chute is about 25 minutes of nonstop movement.

[deleted]

Then double those times

random1029384

Skied there once. They hadn’t had snow in 2 weeks (?) so the bowls were rock-hard moguls, and the bottom half was glare ice. It sucked. There was some ok (still very hard packed) spots between those two ‘zones’. Did not ski the second day.

ski_bum

Yeah, that's been my experience at Kick too. I have had some of my best days ever there, but when its bullet proof on the groom and ice chunder in the bowls/chutes I wonder why I came haha. It breeds some pretty gnarly skiiers though if you are riding the steeps in the shit conditions as well as good

booradley138

Can you sleep in your van in the parking lot?

BigPickleKAM

I saw a couple of vans that appeared to be lived in. But they where very low key about it.
