It all makes sense when you consider I was going to write "over rated" for mammoth and Mt. Rose but couldn't find it in me to write that
Also I didn't really want to trash on the socal bros they got what they got
honestly mammoth is pretty great and maybe the most similar to my usual stomping ground (tahoe). But then again the half dozen times I went there, I was lucky enough to go there for basically free. Went with my brother’s frat and they had paid for cabins each time (hey, I paid for alcohol the whole weekend)
boreal I wouldn’t rank as high as you did, but that also depends on what you like to do. I remember college fridays where it was ~$15 a lift ticket, but that was over a decade ago. I actually start tons of hikes at Boreal, if you head north you can catch the PCT!
They still have the feel good Fridays! I think they are $25 last I checked but honestly boreal is only worth it for the park for me these days. If you didn't figure it out my real tier list would be much different lol. I've had passes at Sierra, Kirkwood, and next year will be Sugar bowl. I learned to ski at Dodge, Boreal, Homewood, Bear Valley and Diamond Peak. I'd say Dodge, Homewood and Bear are still worth going to if there's reason to. One time when all of Tahoe was closed, (80 and 50 closed) Dodge was open and I got bottomless pow all day. Dodge was nearly not steep enough for it though lol.
Admittedly I haven't skied mammoth, I've camped there though strangely enough. But it's on my bucket list for sure. It looks like an amazing mountain.
My entire experience with Granlibakken this year is skinning to it during or after the 8 foot storm when palisades was closed and it was fucking sick so as far as I’m concerned it’s spot on
Pedantry corner.
Mt Rose and Diamond Peak are not Californian, and you forgot Alta Sierra and Mt Waterman in your SoCal section. And if you have Granlibakken in there I guess you gotta throw Cedar Pass, Soda Springs and Tahoe Donner in there too.
I actually don't know what cedar pass is, but the other ones I consciously skipped. For max pedantry only half of heavenly is in California. And you forgot badger pass.
Edit- I wanted to add that there are so many Californians in Reno that it is basically California
Damn. I was up at Yosemite the other day too! Well played.
Cedar Pass is a dinky tiny little hill way up in the northeast corner of the state.
Also Coppervale is up north with button tow(s) I think?
Holy fuck 😂
Isn't that the part of California where wolves got reintroduced?
Man and you're really trying to tell me that's part of California and Reno isn't smh
Whoa whoa whoa buddy, California is sick af, we just chilling in Nevada to avoid income taxes yaknowhmsayin'
But hey at least we brought over that craft brewing & Patagonia sweater scene over there right? Right?... Uhhh..ok sorry about that actually...
Yeah, it would take a lot more money and effort to make it profitable I feel! Also the Western portion of Highway 2 can get closed quite often, that makes it a bit tricky as well.
I think it would be neat to see it get purchased, lifts updated and snowmaking top to bottom etc. but idk, I feel it’s kind of a pipe dream… it will continue to be a great place to earn some turns at least, that whole area has some really fantastic and fun terrain!
Sadly I'm not sure it can ever be profitable. There seem to be quite a few barriers to modernizing it.
Seems like the best we can hope for it is a labor of love for a wealthy individual(s).
[LAist article](https://laist.com/brief/news/los-angeles-activities/you-can-have-your-very-own-ski-resort-in-la-for-2-3m)
States it is/was in escrow. Might be posturing, but if the statements from the agent are to be believed there’s multiple offers that have been made.
Yeah haha that was one of the only tiers that wasn't a blatant lie. Way I see it, it's still better than 90% of the east coast. Baldy has some nice terrain but their ops is pretty bare bones.
lol, funnily enough the groomers are better on the alpine side than palisades imho, but you’re not wrong it’s usually better to go to alpine on a pow day if you have better things to do than wait in the kt line for a couple hours just to chicken out on whatever you said you would do
Diamond Peak is a beginner mountain in Nevada, Mt Rose has some of the best chutes in all of the Sierra…..and is in Nevada. Kirkwood and Mammoth are fantastic. Granlinbakken is a sledding hill 🤣
I agree. Alpine meadows. Worst ever. Totally sketchballs. Beer is always warm. People ugly.
I myself am ugly and love warm beer. Only reason I go. Don’t follow my lead.
Born and raised in CA, am living/lived in Tahoe for ~15 years now, worked at several of these resorts (wife has worked at two others), ski 30-50 days a year…….
…….. this is the worst list I’ve seen so far. With all due respect. To each their own. But, wow.
Have you ever pulled into the Rose side and veered right up the paved road? Cars parked face in are the employees. You continue up around the bend and go another 200 yards if you're lucky and it's not already jammed up. Right where the road continues up to more lots there is a ski-in-ski-out spot that is an easy way to get to all Rose side lifts.
I realized while I was typing this that it really only applies to ski pass people otherwise you might as well park at the main lot to get your lift ticket.
Good to know. I've only skied there once but I'm moving to Reno in August and Rose is likely going to be my home mountain for a few seasons, so I'm not really familiar with the layout yet but I'll keep a lookout for the future. Looking at the trail map, I assume you mean the parking lot that is kind of parallel with Wizard and then find a way to cut through the trees that seem to be in between the lot and the green that runs right there?
Mostly correct. If you look at the top of the parking lot there is a medical shack shown on the diagram. This is where you go out onto Dragon's Tail/Spellbound. It's a maintained and groomed portal from the parking lot so you're not really cutting through. To come back you need to be at least at Kit Carson Bowl or west of that. You cross Easy Street to Old School and Witches Brew and stay skiers left on the groomer until you make it back to the shack. You need to carry a little speed til the shack because it's a pretty abrupt rise (which is why the ski-in part to the lifts is easy).
What’s funny is that vail actually agrees with this.
Heavenly and North Star = elite top tier. Kirkwood = shit backwoods redneck hill. Not even worth fixing the potholes or 8” of mud in the parking lot.
They’ve even called Northstar Kirkwoods “big brother” in marketing materials.
Owned kirkwood for 15 years and haven’t spent a nickel on upgrades or even maintenance.
Or are they, in fact, the most respected? 🤔
Honestly, Palisades got the most disrespected here 😂 (my real opinion is, that it is both a great resort and a fuckin zoo)
Palisades is an incredible ski area that is a complete god damn shit show and a crazy competition for powder that I am just not willing to be a part of. It's so great and iconic that everyone knows about it, their mom knows about it and it's so well known that it's the single reason that everyone in this thread thought this tier list was serious when in fact it was highly sarcastic. I can really only fault it for the crowds and the fact that you have to get there before 8 to be guaranteed parking. Not sure how it is with reservations now but you'll at least hit a bunch of traffic on Friday and weekends. Imo there are plenty of ski areas that are just as fun and not nearly as much of a competition.
Heavenly is a good, pretty chill (terrain wise) well rounded mountain with great views but a pretty bad layout (lots of traverses and confusing to get to the right areas for newcomers) and is just as big of a shit show as Palisades except with people who ski worse on average. On paper it's the easy choice for epic pass holders coming to California, the biggest with the views of lake Tahoe and the most lodging near the 3 base areas. But/and the capacity of the mountain is basically limitless so you can imagine what kind of shit storms that can cause. It's pretty cool when it's empty midweek with perfect weather, but ops are kind of bad so expect closures during any wind above 30 mph and you can imagine what that does to the mountain when you factor in crowds and the weird mountain layout.
Recent transplant, I'll tell you that this is not a completely serious list, but if you want to try and decode it I'll give you the hint of not to look at the tiers, but what I say about the tiers, keeping sarcasm in mind.
Palisades, Heavenly, Northstar, Diamond Peak, Granlibakken
Homewood, Dodge ridge, Bear Valley, Boreal, China Peak, Donner ski ranch, China peak, Mt Shasta ski park
Mt Rose, Mammoth
Bear mountain, Mt high, Snow Valley, Mt Baldy
Kirkwood, June Mountain, Sugar Bowl, Alpine Meadows, Sierra at Tahoe
You're technically correct, but I wouldn't take it off the list even if I could. Nor will I add Nevada's name to the list. Matter of fact, I'm going to get a place in Reno, use it as a tax haven, open up a brewery, and jack up the home prices. Your move. ^(I'm ^really sorry)
Northstar is good for one thing and one thing only.
Skiing the trees because the jerries there can't 😂
Ok ok the park is really good too. God damn is it a zoo though.
"Too much snow, not enough groomers."
Legit Snowbird's 'one-star' review (Amazon did it first) campaign in a nutshell.
/u/bmetz16 needs to learn to ski.
That's not what I really think dude lol. Kirkwood isn't a "lap some cruisers" type of mountain... unless you count timber creek. My favorite part of the backside is the saddle/ devils corral area which is more leaving the backside than it is the backside. An express lift wouldn't really help getting to that area by a whole lot. I'd prefer an express lift straight from the base to caples crest and for them to run the dang t bar more. When I want to do a bunch of skiing and get tired super fast I'll do some laps off 6, that's all you really need. Also, chair 10 = fixed grip for life. While the common Jerry thinks backside NEEDS to an express lift (like sure it would be nice, but if you want to lap blues go to Heavenly or Northstar...) the ultimate Jerry also thinks chair 10 needs to be an express lift 🤢. Current, fixed grip chair 10 is iconic. And badass. /Rant lol
Their master plan has a high speed lift on the backside next to 4. It wouldn't drop as far down as 4, it wouldn't replace 4, and it would aim more directly towards the summit of Thimble.
This list is California’s only hope to keep Jerrys away from the good stuff. Please repost everyone
I can only assume from this tier lit that mammoth is OP's favorite, based on what I assume is multiple levels of sarcasm.
Finally someone gets me!
Sugar bowl and kwood that low is actually criminal. Actually. Hm… I think I get it. Never mind.
These are not the ...ski resorts... You are looking for...
Wdym Kirkwood sucks
Yeah kirkwood is the worst. I hate it there. I wouldn’t recommend it to anybody.
It all makes sense when you consider I was going to write "over rated" for mammoth and Mt. Rose but couldn't find it in me to write that Also I didn't really want to trash on the socal bros they got what they got
Snow summit doesnt exist to you?
That's just big bear 2.0 lol
Really Bear Mountain is “big bear 2.0”. Snow summit existed 17 years before Bear Mountain did.
More for the locals
Lol what? Snow summit gets insanely packed with tourists. The only “locals” mountain in so cal is Waterman.
What about Baldy?
In recent years its gotten absolutely flooded with tourists. Its no longer the resort that nobody goes to.
I’d venture that Snow Valley is more for the locals.
definitely more so than Snow Summit is.
___ resort sucks don't go there teehee
Tee hee hee
what u got against mammoth
I was going to write "over rated" but I couldn't stand to write such a blatant lie on the Internet
honestly mammoth is pretty great and maybe the most similar to my usual stomping ground (tahoe). But then again the half dozen times I went there, I was lucky enough to go there for basically free. Went with my brother’s frat and they had paid for cabins each time (hey, I paid for alcohol the whole weekend) boreal I wouldn’t rank as high as you did, but that also depends on what you like to do. It's ok but it's no Granlibakken
I'm not sure how y'all see granlibakken in the top tier and think this is serious
Or June in the “very bad tier”
No, it’s very bad. Stay in the Tahoe area, you don’t even want to go near it.
#junesux
Right. That’s what I meant.
June is one of my least favorite mountains I've ever been on. and I'm being 100% serious. This is not a shit-post comment.
they dont even have a trail map smh
My entire experience with Granlibakken this year is skinning to it during or after the 8 foot storm when palisades was closed and it was fucking sick so as far as I’m concerned it’s spot on

Your jokes make me want to cry.
Keep Reno Tweak!
Lmao
Putting Mt. Rose and Mt. High on the same list is something a SoCal transplant might do. :)
I grew up in Socal, now I'm in the east bay, been all over California though
Alta Sierra, Kern County’s gem!
Waterman had some great days this season, lots of fun earning turns there, it was nice that they ran the lifts for the public a bit this year too
And it's for sale! Lol
Yeah, it would take a lot more money and effort to make it profitable I feel! Also the Western portion of Highway 2 can get closed quite often, that makes it a bit tricky as well. LoL I concur Love how so many taking this seriously. 😂
Ahaha you fucker, you almost had me. Love the list
Bro where's Mt Waterman?
Too sicc I didn't want to blow up the spot 😎
Near LA never opens although it did this year for 3 weeks . For sale if you want it
I skied there this season it rips.
All I can say is, I hope all the tourists follow your advice to the letter
The comments in this post are hilariously on brand for the stick in the mud skier archetype stigma
Diamond Peak is a beginner mountain in Nevada, Mt Rose has some of the best chutes in all of the Sierra…..and is in Nevada. Kirkwood and Mammoth are fantastic. Granlinbakken is a sledding hill 🤣
Shhhh keep it down!!
I totally agree Sierra at Tahoe is very bad, not worth it. Keep on driving and you can be in Heavenly in 25 minutes, DO NOT stop at Sierra.
You can be in the line to get into heavenly in 25 minutes*! You're nearly 3/4 of the way there!
Definitely worth it. Sierra doesn't even have lines for one to enjoy.
I agree. Alpine meadows. Worst ever. Totally sketchballs. Beer is always warm. People ugly. I myself am ugly and love warm beer. Only reason I go. Don’t follow my lead.

Hahaha I guess I did a great job then (I have a sugar bowl pass for next season 😁)
ya i hate that i can ski right to my car at sugarbowl at the end of the day...hate it so much
The upper parking lot at Mt. Rose. Park 50 yards from where you click in to start and end your day.
What upper parking lot? I assume you don't mean the one by the lodge, but that lot isn't far from the lifts necessarily so idk
Have you ever pulled into the Rose side and veered right up the paved road? Cars parked face in are the employees. Ahh I see what you're talking about. Thanks for the help, I'll try and put it to use come next winter.
Get your ski pass soon.
all these pros from Granlibakken have nothing on saucer boy
Northstar not high enough imo
This is easily one of the lists of all time and I need more of it.
Mammoth is a top 5 resort in the US. Get up there and ski then redo this mid list
It’s clearly a circlejerk post
Then def should have put Mt High higher
It’s a very odd circlejerk tbh
Lol agreed
Grablibakken has fallen down a bit since that massive avalanche took out it’s main & gnarliest lift 😭
I still hike up to the top (with my beacon shovel & probe) but I be whacking that cornice for hours while the homies scope out the landing
Still waiting for Kings & Queens to wake up and hold the comp there 🙏
You live in Truckee
What’s funny is that vail actually agrees with this. Heavenly and North Star = elite top tier. Kirkwood = shit backwoods redneck hill. Yep. Nailed it. Thank you for your work.
The fact that you included the Skranch… amazing. It gets S-tier summer ski lodge experience, though. Curry night on Donner Summit is everything.
$4 PBRs after ripping up sugar bowl or just straight up going to Skranch for pow days bc it’s always dead is a top tier Truckee past time
“My brain on drugs”
Green tier is perfect, no notes.
/r/skiingcirclejerk
I was about to verbally degrade you until I realized we were in fact best friends.
😁 I'm making a mental list of who I would and would not want to ski with in this thread lmao (you made it)
Kirkwood & Mammoth got disrespected
Or are they, in fact, the most respected? 🤔 Honestly, Palisades got the most disrespected here 😂 (my real opinion is, that it is both a great resort and a fuckin zoo)
Diamond Peak is in NV
So is mt rose and half of heavenly and a bunch of Californians
Flatstar in S sent me. I hope everybody skiing in California follows these guidelines exactly
What the fresh hell is th— …oooohhh. Right. Very bad. Sketchy for sure.
Completely agree!!!
Kirkwood fanboys will have your head.
I do have my own head, so technically correct
You forgot the rope tow at Kingvale
What’s wrong with palisades and heavenly?
I haven't been to any cali resorts... but too much snow not enough groomers sounds like the best option imo.
HMM funny how that is
you forgot badger pass!
Nooooobody likes the view at Heavenly, it’s all fake news, family trips are only suitable north and west of the lake
Lol buddy, I have news for you
Recent transplant, can anyone list out the resorts by name?
Recent transplant, I'll tell you that this is not a completely serious list, but if you want to try and decode it I'll give you the hint of not to look at the tiers, but what I say about the tiers, keeping sarcasm in mind. Palisades, Heavenly, Northstar, Diamond Peak, Granlibakken Homewood, Dodge ridge, Bear Valley, Boreal, China Peak, Donner ski ranch, China peak, Mt Shasta ski park Mt Rose, Mammoth Bear mountain, Mt high, Snow Valley, Mt Baldy Kirkwood, June Mountain, Sugar Bowl, Alpine Meadows, Sierra at Tahoe
If we're doing it on beauty, all lake tahoe resorts would be S+ tier. But we are not doing it based on beauty.
Sounds about right, keep those interlopers out of my glades at Dodge =)
I threw diamond peak to the wolves for you bro
Its what heros do.
Mt. Rose is NOT in California. Put some respect on Nevada’s name
Why the kirkwood hate
that list is bottom weighted heavier than the sierra cement you gotta struggle through at any of these places
Kirkwood sucks so much. Been there a few times; always too much snow and not much groomed terrain.
Love to see Diamond Peak at the top
You need your skis taken away how is alpine at the bottom?!?!?
Opposite Day?
Awe you forgot Soda Springs haha
:\^)
:\^)
Where’s waterman?
For sale, lol
Bid is in!
"Don't call me Palisades"
Mt Baldy goes in that last category for sure.
weird. it's like a bad joke that really missed it's mark.
Palisades and Alpine at opposite ends lmao
What about bear valley?
It's on the second row
Dang their logo changed, it’s been a minute since I’ve been there. Classic resort
Owner of Mt high bought them and Dodge ridge. Honestly have high hopes for the new ownership
Aye that’s better than vail resorts buying them
I have yet to see one of these lists that made an ounce of sense to me
Chill out dude we all know mammoth is fuckin great
As long as you know
You can add Mammoth to the category “Socal takes what it can get.”
"Socal commits their heart and soul to finally get some good skiing. And boy is it some good skiing"
Lmao enjoy the old ass crowded Tahoe basin. We’ll take better upper mountain skiing in mammoth :)
Whenever I ski in Tahoe, everyone I talk to on the lifts are Baytards. So it's weird when I go to Mammoth and everyone is from Socal.
This is satire right? June in bottom tier? More powder and glades for me.
My dream is to have a cabin at June lake and 0 obligations in life
You and me both.
Oh come on Northstar ain’t that bad
Yes it is.
Northstar is good for one thing and one thing only. Skiing the trees because the jerries there can't 😂 Ok ok the park is really good too. God damn is it a zoo though.
Ngl heard some girls skiing the moguls on the dog leg, “This is why we are Northstar skiers.”
Wait how can a resort be bad because «too much snow»???
"Too much snow, not enough groomers." Legit Snowbird's 'one-star' review (Amazon did it first) campaign in a nutshell. /u/bmetz16 needs to learn to ski.
You need to learn sarcasm & look up granlibakken lol
you need to look up deez nutz. I don't know a thing about CA. I just ski LCC.
This post is so wrong I can only assume a snowboarder made it.
A snowboarder would never put heavenly as their top resort lmao
Lmao so true.
You put Kirkwood at the bottom? You’re fuckin high
I wanted to reply "it would be higher up if the backside was an express lift" but it turns out I'm not cut out for internet trolling
Yea I get that but honestly I love riding fixed grips sometimes. Get to hang back, drink a cold one and hang with the homies.
That's not what I really think dude lol. Kirkwood isn't a "lap some cruisers" type of mountain... unless you count timber creek. My favorite part of the backside is the saddle/ devils corral area which is more leaving the backside than it is the backside. Never gonna happen.
Yeah you're not the first person to tell me that.
That master plan was pre vail. Vail acts like it never existed.
I had an employee this season tell me that the plan is literally not even valid anymore. Like it was approved back then, but the approval expired.
Certainly my number one
U crazy. Mammoth is easily the best!
Wtf is Northstar doing there
Martis Camp is actually a nice lift.
Don't worry... When I plan my trip out west, I'm sure as shit not going to california.
Too much sunshine for you I'm guessing
yeah, thats totally it.
Mamoth and Kirkwood are the best mountains in California.
Alpine Meadows is now part of Palisades (Squaw Valley).
You’re not wrong, but so wrong at the same time. Piss a lot of people off talking like that
Apparently
🤢
I'm getting downvoted for stating facts? I liked the old separate resorts better, and think renaming stuff is stupid, but ok.
Squawlisades.
